Brunet III, p.608. Graesse III, p.503.Divided into four parts: the Digest, the Codex, the Institutes, and the Novels. The Digest, the largest of the works, preserved the writings of classical jurists. The Codex compiled all of the existing imperial constitutiones (imperial pronouncements having the force of law), back to the time of Hadrian. It used both the Codex Theodosianus and the fourth-century collections embodied in the Codex Gregorianus and Codex Hermogenianus. The Institutes provided an introduction to the law for students, and the Novels were the new pronouncements of Justinian that followed the completion of the other parts of the Corpus. Not only one of the most scholarly editions of this landmark work, but also a superbly produced work.

BINDINGS - ARMORIAL). BERNARD DE CLAIRVAUX
Paris: Jean Du Puis, 1663. This is a rare edition of St. Bernard's 86 sermons on the "Song of Solomon," a masterpiece of Medieval monastic literature, handsomely bound for an important French collector. Founder of the Cistercian Order, and probably the most influential Christian of his day, St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) espoused a mystical Christianity that is beautifully expressed in these sermons, considered his greatest literary achievement. According to Britannica, this work "revealed his teaching, often described as 'sweet as honey,' as in his later title 'doctor mellifluus.' It was a love song supreme." Love is the foundation of Bernard's theology, and he examines the "Song of Songs" as an allegory for the loving relationship--the spiritual marriage--between a believer and God. Our former owner, Marquis Jean-Jacques Charron de Menars (1643-1714), is described by Olivier as a "grand bibliophile," who purchased the library amassed by Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617) en bloc in 1680 when that great collector's heirs sold the family estate. De Thou served French kings Henri III and Henri IV, negotiated the Edict of Nantes (one of the earliest decrees of religious tolerance in Europe), and produced a history of contemporary France noted by modern historians for its scientific and detached approach, but condemned in his day for its objective view of Protestantism. A devoted bibliophile and scholar, he amassed a library of more than 9,000 volumes by the time of his death. Bindings from his collection continue to be very actively sought after. Charron de Menars cle … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vossius, Isaac
Hagae-Comitis [The Hague]: Ex Typographia Adriani Vlacq, 1663. FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. [xii], 123, [1]. Contemporary vellum, boards bordered in gilt with a central gilt tool. Lightly toned and soiled. Rebacked to style, hinges neatly relined, boards soiled and marked, ties lost. Ownership inscription of Henry Williamson to flyleaf (crossed out), price of 10s 6d to endpapers, and further ownership inscription of Gasparis Delahoyde, surgeon, dated 1747. One of Vossius's 'more scientific tracts... [which] attracted considerable attention among his contemporaries' (ODNB): he sought to explain the motion of the tides, a question of increasing interest, with reference to the heat of the sun exclusively, instead of the stars, the moon, or other forces. At the end he also discusses the use of a mercury barometer for predicting storms at sea. The following decade the text was translated into English to help it reach a wider audience.

I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Love is a treacherous emotion. You will fare better without it. We Medici always have." - Catherine de Medici Catherine de Medici was an Italian Queen of France in the mid-16th-century. Her reign as French royalty is often remembered for her involvement in the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre in which thousands of Huguenots were killed throughout France. During the 16th-century, there was perhaps no other more powerful woman in all of Europe. First published in 1575, this anonymous pamphlet was a violent attack on Catherine de Medici which has sense been attributed to a number of iconic writers including Henri Estienne, Theodore Beza, or Jean de Serre. According to Willems, this 1663 edition is "a very pretty edition that goes out incontestably of the Elzevier presses of Amsterdam.' A rare first Elzevier edition, published in 1663. Robert Boyle
Oxford: Henry Hall for Richard Davies, 1663 Book. Very Good. Full-Leather. 1st Edition. [pp] 20; pp 134; pp 376 [lacking pp 377-417 and (pp) 19] First edition of one of Robert Boyle's most important works bound in contemporary English calf but lacking the final forty pages of text and the contents leaves that follow. Attractive late seventeenth century calf binding with raised bands and faded gilt tooling to spine, a double gilt panel around the boards and all edges gilt. The morocco spine label is absent. Marbled endpapers and written on the first blank in an early hand 'Boyle Of Naturall Philosophy'. The text is complete with both title pages as called for until it breaks off inexplicably at page 376 with only the final marbled pastedown to follow. The loss of these final pages is all the more puzzling as the book's first binding survives otherwise in such good condition. A little worming to the last few gatherings at the head of the page. In this work Boyle deals first with experiments, cures and observations on topics such as limb regeneration and the preparations of remedies. The second work is effectively the prologue to the Sceptical Chemist. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information about this book. .
