BIBLE
Leyden, Widow and Heirs Johannes Elzevier, 1663. 2 volumes, (frontispiece, 22) 468, (13) 167 (2) 77 folia. Contemporary Leather with 7 raised bands and clasps, decorated with gold, large Folio H. 44,5 x L. 28,5 x W. 9/7 cm. (The bindings are slightly grazed at some places, the bottom of the spines are somewhat restored, some wormholes in the inner margin. On the first endpaper a handwritten family index dating from the year 1811 until 1868. The first edition of the Elzevierbible, containing the Old and New Testament and the Apocrypha. With the 6 folding maps by Nicolaes Visscher and interleaved with the series of prints by Cornelis Danckerts after Mattheüs Merian. This series of prints features 6 times 16 engravings on 2 folio sized leaves. This Bible was the first Dutch Bible that was printed in a Roman font. Remarkable is that the text blocks are still in a good condition, the Elzevier printing office experimented a lot to create the blackest of inks. Because of this the text blocks are in almost every case very browned. Attractive set bound in brown-red leather with clasps and decorated with gilt on both the boards and the spine with a design of flowers and vines.) 2 delen, (titelprent, 22) 468, (13) 167 (2) 77 folia. Exemplaire à restaurer. (TURBET-DELOF, 193). [Click Below for Full Description]

Spoleto, 1663. Manuscript on vellum. In very finely tooled, gilt, painted, red leather armorial binding. Spine and all edges are gilt. Marbled pastedowns. Written in golden and dark ink. Dated: 6 August 1663. Twelve lines, with a golden double line around the mirror and golden ruling. Title page with with three coat of arms and a large, gilt, floral initial. First leaf blind. (12) p. A very fine and beautiful, late Renaissance Italian armorial binding. The document, issued by the council of the city of Spoleto (Italy, Umbria), grants the citizenship for Carlo Montecatini (Carolo Montecatino), his family and descendants. Montecatini (1616-1699) was a Ferrarese nobleman, who studied law in Rome. He held various ecclesiastical positions in Ferrara and Rome and became elected governor of numerous cities (among them of Spoleto), and Archbishop of Chalcedon (Calcedonia). The document is bound into contemporary, late Renaissance Italian binding in Arabic style. All compartments of the panels - divided with a geometric black border - are richly gilt with different patterns of scales and dots, or fine, decorative floral and geometric designs. The centerpiece on the front panel is the bishop's coat of arms of Carlo Montecatini, on the rear panel, the coat of arms of Spoleto. Inner and board edges are gilt tooled with tiny geometric patterns, spine with floral ornaments. The oriental character of the binding reflects in the Turkish-marbled (ebru) pastedowns as well. The three illuminated coat of arms, adorning the head of the title page, are the escutcheons of Carlo Montecatini and th … [Click Below for Full Description]

FIRST EDITION PRINTED IN ENGLAND, and the third Latin edition of the Dialogo. Wing notes two printings of this year, but was probably confused by varying reports of engraved and printed titles. Wing G165 gives the engraved title as above, omitting the imprint; G168 gives the printed title as above, with matching form of imprint. The text includes, after the end of the Dialogus, an excerpt from Kepler, and Foscarini's reconciliation of the Copernican system with Scripture. This edition is very rare in the trade and at auction with only 4 copies recorded at auction in the past 50 years. Our copy sold 2011 at Christie's London for GBP 10,000 (lot 42). The Dialogo is the summation of Galileo's astronomical work, and his celebrated advancement of the Copernican system … [Click Below for Full Description]

A[LLEINE], R[ichard]
[s.n.], Printed in the Year 1663, London. [16], 400pp. Page 201 misnumbered 180. Contemporary blind-ruled sheep, morocco lettering-piece. Lightly rubbed, small sympathetic repair to lower board, slight splitting to joints. Pastedowns sprung and shaved, near contemporary inked ownership inscription to recto of FFEP beneath earlier deleted inscription, leaves toned and lightly spotted, very occasional inked corrections/highlighting. A compilation of sermons on Ephesians 5:15 and John 1:47 and the application of their teachings by clergyman and ejected Puritan minister Richard Alleine (1610/11-1681). First printed in 1663, Vindiciae Pietatis went through several editions in the latter half of the seventeenth-century despite its being refused a licence. Such was the popularity of the early printings that the king's bookseller Roger Norton had the greater part of the impressions seized, citing their unlicensed status, and sent to the King's kitchen - after which he purchased them at a vastly reduced price and sold them from his own premises. Norton was subsequently forced to apologise before the crown and return all remaining copies, at which time according to Edmund Calamy (1600-1666) they were to be 'rubbed over with an inky brush.' (An abridgement of Mr. Baxter's history of his life and times, 1713). A variant printing, in two parts with a reset title-page, appeared in the same year - no priority has been established. ESTC records copies of this variant printing at five locations in the British Isles (Aberdeen, BL, Carlisle Cathedral, NLW, and Oxford), and two further in Nort … [Click Below for Full Description]

Folio broadside (43 x 31.2 cm) on laid paper watermarked SP DP in three circles. Printed partly in triple columns, typographical ornaments at top and between elements of text. Creased where formerly folded, otherwise exceptionally fine. First Mexican edition. THERE ARE 2 ISSUES OF THIS BROADSIDE, THIS BEING THE RAREST AND NICEST, with a different setting of type and smaller in size. JCB Library has the "other" issue. A reminder to inhabitants of Puebla that they must pay church tithes on farm products and produce. Distinctions were made between tithes expected of Spaniards, as well as all others who were not Indians. Two classes of citizens are outlined: "Los Españoles, y todos los demas que no fueron Indios". Diego Escobar y Llamas (?-1673), a Spanish native, was bishop of Puebla 1656-73 and became the twenty-fourth viceroy of New Spain in 1644. He built religious structures in Puebla and contributed personally to New Spain's defense. This broadside was printed by Ines Vasquez Borja y Gandia, widow of Juan de Borja y Gandia who began printing in 1654 but died in 1656, after which the printing house was taken over by Ines, a native of Barrancos en Castilla la Vieja (now Portugal). In her imprints, thirty-five of which have been identified, Ines always referred to the press as Viuda de Juan de Borja y Gandia. PATIN (Charles).
A Paris, chez Jean du Bray et Pierre Variquet, 1663. in-4. Portrait. 9ff. 122pp. 3ff. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Full Sheepskin brown textured contemporary. Back tooled raised. Caps frayed, upper joint split third, corners bumped. Sorel assigned by Barbier in the dictionary of anonymous works, the book deals with an unusual subject and a very free way to make money in all trades and disciplines, artisans bankers and people letters, the book extends its thinking to less informal means such as court favor, inheritance.
