Charles SOREL
First Edition. Rare. A copy of the University Library Tours, absent the BN France and the British Library a copy in Edinburgh. Brunet does not mention this book in the works of Sorel. Full Sheepskin brown textured contemporary. Back tooled raised. Caps frayed, upper joint split third, corners bumped. Sorel assigned by Barbier in the dictionary of anonymous works, the book deals with an unusual subject and a very free way to make money in all trades and disciplines, artisans bankers and people letters, the book extends its thinking to less informal means such as court favor, inheritance. The whole is an economic and moral portrait of the society of the seventeenth quite interesting, and perhaps for the first time, considers money as well for doing good. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Hugo Grotio Grotii
Blaeu Amsterdam. GROTIUS, Hugo [1583-1645] Published Apud Ioannem Blaeu, Amsterdam (1663) Full Leather. Condition: Very Good. Pp. 12 p.l., 618, [46]. Title in red and black, woodcut printer's device. Contemporary calf, double blind ruled border with small cornerpieces, Binding a little rubbed at extremities, two ink signatures on ffep, leaves a little browned, but overall a nice copy. First published in 1625, while Grotius was living in Paris (after his ingenious escape from Holland in a box full of books), De Jure Belli et Pacis (On the Law of War and Peace) made its author famous throughout Europe, and ultimately came to be regarded as the cornerstone of modern political philosophy and jurisprudence. His treatise was the first to attempt to establish the principles of "natural law" and the social contract as the basis of society and government, rather than revelations of religion or the edicts of emperors; and as such, it anticipated the ideas of the great political theorists of the 18th century, and laid the foundations of modern international law. Sanson, Nicolas
Paris, 1663. unbound. very good. Map. Hand-colored engraving. 15" x 23". This map of Sicily from the 17th century shows the entire island as well as the southwesternmost tip of the Italian peninsula. The names of the surrounding bodies of water are named in Latin and rivers, mountains, lakes, and towns are noted on the map. Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) is considered the founder of the French school of cartography. In reaction to the prevailing trend of Dutch lavishness, Sanson favored minimal details, focusing rather on accurate cartography than ornament. This map is a fine example of his work.

Schottelius, Justus Georg.
Braunschweig, Christoff Friederich Zillinger, 1663. Jahrhunderts darstellt, "makes him (Schottelius) if not the father, then the grandfather of germanic philology" (Faber du Faur). [Click Below for Full Description]

The Digest, the largest of the works, preserved the writings of classical jurists. The Codex compiled all of the existing imperial constitutiones (imperial pronouncements having the force of law), back to the time of Hadrian. It used both the Codex Theodosianus and the fourth-century collections embodied in the Codex Gregorianus and Codex Hermogenianus. The Institutes provided an introduction to the law for students, and the Novels were the new pronouncements of Justinian that followed the completion of the other parts of the Corpus. Not only one of the most scholarly editions of this landmark work, but also a superbly produced work. [Click Below for Full Description]
