First edition of the first extensive, separately published textbook on integral calculus, by Louis Carré (1663-1711), French mathematician and private teacher at Paris, published 44 years before Leonard Euler's classic textbook. It includes a wide variety of practical applications, including the measurement of surface areas, the determination of the volumes and centres of gravity of solid bodies, and problems of dynamics. With a contemporary owner's name on the title-page, a later 18th-century manuscript note on the endleaf and a couple manuscript notes in the text. A failed attempt to wash out the owner's name on the title-page has left a small faint stain. With the title-page slightly foxed and an occasional minor spot, but still in very good condition and with very large margins. The binding shows some cracks in the hinges, superficial damage to the leather and some corners skilfully repaired, but is still good and structurally sound. The most thorough presentation of integral calculus to its date.Goldsmith BMC STC French 345; I. JONSTON, John.
1663. DSB VII, pp. 164-165; Nissen, ZBI 2136; this edition not in BMC NH. First edition in Dutch, of John Jonston's classic illustrated zoological encyclopedia. The 250 excellent illustration plates, mostly with three or more animals each, provide accurate views of about a thousand animals, along with some rather odd images of the more exotic beasts and the occasional unicorn, mermaid, dragon, phoenix, harpie, etc. The 6 parts cover quadrupeds; fish (including some sea mammals); "bloodless" sea animals (mostly invertebrates); birds (including bats); "grooved or twisted" animals (insects, spiders, worms, slugs, etc.); and snakes and dragons. A copy of the present edition was presented to the Shogun in 1663, and remained Japan's principal source of knowledge for western zoology for nearly a century (Boxer, Jan Compagnie in Japan, p. 50). Few expert repairs to the binding and in the margin of a few leaves. Good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

SERLIO, Sebastiano
Venetia [Venice]: Jacobum de Angelis, 1663.. Folio, (iv), 433, (1) pp. Engraved title and numerous woodcut diagrams and illustrations in the text, 13 full page etchings at the end of the volume, with a leaf bound in at page 332 containing two half page woodcuts intended for binding in by pp. 332 and 245. A small patch of damp staining almost throughout to the top of the inner margin, with mostly minor loss to a number of leaves, affecting the text in one case (N2) and slightly affecting images in a few more, three related engravings tipped in to the front endpapers. Contemporary quarter vellum, a little worn and marked, lacking the spine label, blue paper boards with some marks and loss, recent repair to the foot of the spine. First published at intervals from 1537 onwards and an important work in both the development and spread of Italian Renaissance architecture, being the first to emphasise practical rather than theoretical aspects of building.

(24),369, (12) pp.First edition. - Levinus Bor 'entered Arnold de Vlamingh van Oudtshoorn's service as his assistant in 1650 and became his secretary later. Bor was a witness to the suppression of the rebellion in the Ambonese islands in 1651-1656. In his booklet, written in 1657, he sets out to give a report on the basis of the papers at his disposal of the Vlamingh's methods of warfare and of the latter's measures to safequard the VOC's interest for a long time ahead. The entire work is suffered with a tone of approval and admiration for the feats of the extremely harsh de Vlamingh. Bor shows no understanding whatever for the motives inspiring the Moluccan rebels' (Polman, The Central Moluccas, p.21).
