He is remembered for his method of making potassium sulphate and his name is attached to the native salt - Glaserite. He is also notorious for having been implicated in the famous poisoning case involving la Marquise de Brinvilliers which forced him to leave Paris. A PRINTED LEAF FROM A BIBLE IN ALGONQUIN. (ELIOT'S INDIAN BIBLE)
Cambridge, Massachusetts: S. Green and M. Johnson, 1663. From the First Bible Printed in America 184 x 146 mm (7 1/4 x 5 3/4"). Double column, 62 lines of text and headline in roman type. Attractively matted. Darlow & Moule 6737. Lightly browned, but excellent. This is a very desirable leaf from Eliot's Indian Bible. In addition to its distinction as the first Bible printed in America, this book, in the words of Darlow & Moule, "constitutes the earliest example in history of the translation and printing of the entire Bible in a new language as a means of evangelization." Darlow & Moule adds that this Bible "was the first scripture printed in North America, and also the first version prepared for a pagan people in their own language. John Eliot performed the Herculean task of learning the difficult Algonquin tongue, of translating, unaided, the entire Bible in this unknown and unwritten language, of overcoming many technical difficulties, and of then teaching the Indians to read their own tongue. Samuel Green, the printer, was aided greatly by James Printer, an Indian compositor and corrector of the press. . . . The language is now extinct." Eliot (ca. 1604-90) was a Puritan minister in Roxbury, Massachusetts, who, beginning at age 42, studied for 15 years the Narragansett, or Massachusett, dialect of the Indian tribes in his vicinity. He worked for an additional eight years on his translation. Printing was begun in 1660 with equipment and supplies shipped from England by the Corporation for the Promoting and Propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in New England. Borba de Moraes comments, "The Chronica is considered by Portuguese bibliophiles to be a typographical masterpiece . The frontispiece engraved by A. Clauwet is missing in many copies. The Chronica is a fundamental book concerning the history of Brazil, and contains the first printing of P. José de Anchieta's poem to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is rare today." Borba points out that most copies have rather narrow margins, cut close to the border. In this copy the upper margins extend as much as 2 cm. beyond the border, the outer ones can be almost 2 cm., while the lower margins are sometimes almost 2.5 cm.; the overall siz … [Click Below for Full Description]

Adams, Jack
1663. Adams, Jack (1625-?). Magnifico smokentissimo custardissimo astrologissimo cunningmanissimo rabbinissimo viro Iacko Adams de Clarkenwell Greeno hanc lovelissiman sui picturam. Engraved portrait. N.p., n.d. (1663 or later). Mounted. 130 x 76 mm. (engraving); 146 x 93 mm. (mount). Very good. Comic portrait of British astrologer Jack Adams, the "Cunning Man of Clerkenwell Green," captioned in dog-Latin and signed "Hobbedeboody pinxit et scratchabat." John Timbs, who reproduced this engraving in his English Eccentrics and Eccentricities (1875), gave the following brief biography of Adams: "Among the celebrities of Clerkenwell Green was Jack Adams, whose nativity was calculated by Partridge, who affirmed that he was born on the 3rd of December, 1625, and that he was so great a natural, or simpleton, as to be obliged to wear long coats, besides other marks of stupidity. . . . "Jack Adams was a conjurer and professor of the celestial sciences; he was (says Granger's Supplement) 'a blind buzzard, who pretended to have the eyes of an eagle. He was chiefly employed in horary questions, relative to love and marriage, and knew, upon proper occasions, how to soothe and flatter the expectations of those who consulted him, as a man might have much better fortune from him for five guineas than for the same number of shillings . . . He assumed the character of a learned and cunning man; but was no otherwise cunning than as he knew how to overreach those credulous mortals who were as willing to be cheated as he was to cheat them, and who relied implicitly upon his art.' . . . NICERON, Jean François / MERSENNE, Marin
Paris: Jean du Puis/Widow of Langlois, 1663. Scarce edition of this important treatise on perspective by the most scientifically rigorous of 17th-century French theorists, of particular interest for its contention that “the illustrations to earlier treatises were often defective” (Millard), thus making it the first work on the subject to treat the problem of didactic illustration in a deliberate and self-conscious manner. A comprehensive textbook, Book I gives basic geometrical definitions and an introduction to perspective construction; Book II treats simple and deformed perspective—namely, the curved or irregular surfaces found in vaulted ceilings, niches etc., and examines the necessary surface distortion (anamorphosis) to bring a picture painted on such a surface into perspective; Book III deals with more complex cases of anamorphosis, such as reflections on flat, cylindrical and conical surfaces; and Book IV covers the use of dioptrics for placing figures on flat surfaces. The sections of books II and III dealing with anamorphosis were particularly important, whether in Niceron's own practice as a painter or for later artists or theorists (see the chapter on Niceron in Baltrušaitis), and according to Mahoney (DSB), the discussion of refraction in Book IV possibly contains “the first published reference to Descartes' derivation of the law of refraction” (X.104). The work first appeared in French in 1638; reprinted in 1646 and 1651, in the latter with the first appearance of Mersenne's treatise. This edition is a second edition of that reprint. * Millard French, 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

PATIN (Charles)
[Paris: 1663]. Engraved title by Chauveau, engraved dedication to Charles Le Brun, 249 leaves engraved with coins. Oblong 8vo. Newly bound in tan goatskin, the covers with a blind fillet border and panel, the spine divided into six panels, lettered in the second and dated at the foot, the others tooled with a blind ornament, plain endleaves and edges. The title and dedication leaf have been closely trimmed at the foot with slight loss, and a few of the plates are rather closely trimmed at the head to just within the plate marks. There is some occasional light browning and soiling but it is a good copy. There is a 2pp manuscript index at the end and one of the plates has a coin added in brown ink into two of the blank roundels. The volume came from the library at Woburn Abbey, though there are now no marks of provenance. The book illustrates the ancient coins that were part of the collection of Fulvio Orsini. One of the leaves has been printed with two plates, and all the others have only one plate (displaying a varying number of coins). Comparing this copy with the Earl of Pembroke's and William Roscoe's copies it is evident that there were a number of different issues of this book published in 1663.

DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO. SIGLO XVII.
PATIN, Charles
Jean du Bray & Pierre Variquet, Paris, 1663. With engraved vignette on title and the famous portrait of "Monsieur Charles Patin" by Claude Lefebvre, French painter and etcher. Contemporary full calf, slightly warped and somewhat worn; first and last leaves browned around the edges, small waterstain on last blank and paste-down, text in excellent condition. First edition of this very rare treatise describing the use of peat as a fuel. The author discusses the varieties and sources of combustible peat used to make charcoal as well as many useful by-products in agriculture, cooking and botany. At the time, charcoal was believed to mainly consist of bitumen and sulpher, causing strong fumes, which Patin was much opposed to because of his concern with dangers of health caused by inhalation. Proficient in metallurgy, Patin was an early advocate of ecology, with his knowledge that strong organic matter accumulates in the ground and gives rise to significant drops in mineral contents, causing many problems for plant growth. At the end of the book is a proposal of the Sieur de Chambre for the artificial production of peat bogs surrounding Paris along with royal letter patent for a thirty year process.Patin (1633-1693), the gifted son of Gui Patin, by the age of 23 completed his law studies and received his M.D. degree. He taught anatomy and pathology at the medical school of Paris, but was obliged to leave France for fear of imprisonment for circulation of certain libels which drew upon him the resentment of the court. He traveled extensively, finally settling in Padua, Italy, where … [Click Below for Full Description]

The sections of books II and III dealing with anamorphosis were particularly important, whether in Niceron’s own practice as a painter or for later artists or theorists (see the chapter on Niceron in Baltrušaitis), and according to Mahoney (DSB), the discussion of refraction in Book IV possibly contains “the first published reference to Descartes’ derivation of the law of refraction” (X.104). The work first appeared in French in 1638; reprinted in 1646 and 1651, in the latter with the first appearance of Mersenne’s treatise. This edition is a second edition of that reprint.* Millard French, 124 … [Click Below for Full Description]
