LANSBERGE, Philip van.
Bierens de Haan 2675; STCN (5 copies); not in Poggendorff; for Lansberge: DSB VIII, pp. 27-28; NNBW II, cols. 775-782. Rare first (and only Latin) edition of Van Lansberge's detailed and well-illustrated treatise on sundials, posthumously published by Zacharias Roman in Middelburg, who had published most of his works. Roman says he found this text in manuscript among the papers of Van Lansberge's estate. Planning the publication of the complete works, he decided to publish this text as well. The present treatise was designed to be bound with the Opera omnia, published in the same year. From the library of Christopher St. John Hume Daniel, author of several recent books on sundials. Lacking folios A2-3, containing Roman's dedication to Nicolaas Blanckaert and brief note to the reader, and with a few of the figures shaved by the binder, but otherwise in very good condition.

GLASER, Christophle.
Rare first edition of this very important chemistry text, which went through some thirteen editions between 1663 and 1710. It is one of the earliest attempts to strip chemistry from its alchemical mysticism and to describe chemical preparations in an unambiguous manner. "The work is divided into two books: book I briefly describes the utility, definitions, principles, operations, and apparatus of chemistry: book II is devoted to a description of medicinal preparations drawn from the mineral, vegetable, and animal kingdoms. The section devoted to mineral remedies is by far the largest. Little is novel in these preparations, although Glaser displays individual refinements of technique. His recipe for a sel antifebrile (potassium sulfate made by heating saltpeter and sulfur and recrystallizing from water) became uniquely identified with him and was later known as sel polychrestum Glaseri. The naturally occurring mixed sulfate of sodium and potassium (3K2SO4:Na2SO4) was named glaserite in his honor." (DSB).. 8vo (162 x 98 mm), bound in 19th century fine half calf over marbled boards, richly gilt spine with red title label, joints starting but still strong and intact, edges died in red, corners in green vellum. Fully complete: pp [2:engraved title], [viii], 1-378, [3:privilege] and 2 folding engraved plates. A very fine and clean copy. Rare

PELSAERT, François
Amsterdam: Gillis Joosten Saeghman, n.d., 1663. Small quarto, pp. 44, with a wood-engraved title-page vignette, one full-page wood-engraving, and six copper engraved illustrations in the text; some toning and a few marks but a very good copy with good margins and sharp impressions of the engravings; bound in simple marbled paper wrappers. Very rare and exceptionally important: an early edition of the extraordinary and dramatic story of the "unlucky voyage" of the VOC ship Batavia, the most desirable of all books relating to Western Australia, a celebrated rarity of Australian book collecting, and the most important of all Dutch Australiana. Pelsaert's boat voyage along the West Australian coast to seek help at Batavia was the first extensive discovery of the Australian continent, exceeded only by the later voyages of Abel Tasman.First published in 1647, there were essentially six editions, with three variants, published in the seventeenth century (Tiele, 235-243; Landwehr, VOC, 406-411). This is the last of the early editions; all the early editions are of great rarity on the market. This version has sometimes been misidentified, appearing in some library catalogues wrongly dated 1648.The fine engraved illustrations in the book are famous; they include the celebrated scene of the Batavia foundering on the Houtman Abrolhos in the Indian Ocean west of modern Geraldton, graphic reproductions of the mutiny and slaughter on the islands, and the hanging of the mutineers on Seal Island. These are the earliest printed representations of any Australian scenes. The early Dut … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, u Bray, Variquet & de Ninville, 1663.. Folio, circa 36,5 x 24,5 cm. Frontisp. by F. Chauveau, portrait of Louis XIV. by van Schuppen after Mignard, 18 ff., 429 (recte 433) pp., with an engraved vignette to title, 255 engraved coins, 4 engr. vignettes and 1 engr. initial in text Full vellum (old covers, spine renewed in vellum). Brunet IV, 439; Graesse V, 167; Lipsius/L. 307. The only edition of this amply illustrated work on Roman numismatics, following the similar study that Fulvius Ursinus published in Rome in 1577. Apparently there are variants of this work with sometimes added engravings tipped into the book over the ones printed in the text. This is not the case here and our copy has only one extra plate with the portrait of Louis XIV., but no additional portrait of the author Patin. - Some browning, little spotting, endpapers renewed and skillfully rebacked, altogether nice.
