In his long lasting working life, Johannes Blaeu published three books on Italian cities. In 1663 he published the volumes divided as follows: Papal State, Rome and the Reign of Naples. After his death, in 1682, his heirs published two more volumes, about the cities of Piedmont and Savoy, reissued afterwards in 1693 and 1697 by other publishers. The French publisher Pierre Mortier reissued some plates in 1704/5, with the title of Nouveau Theatre de l'Italie. The collection is made of four volumes, which include Blaeu's plates, though slightly changed and modified; with them, there are also many new maps drawn by Mortier himslef, depicting the cities of Northern Italy, published in the first volume. Georg Philipp Finckh
[Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes BLAEU (Alkmaar 1571 - Amsterdam 1663)
[Dutch-Portuguese War].
1663. Gravenhage. Hillebrandt van Wouw. 4to, (197 x 150 mm). 14 ff. Unbound. Mainly marginal foxing spots.- First edition. The Dutch-Portuguese War was an armed conflict involving Dutch forces in the form of the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company, against the Portuguese (1602 – 1663). During the conflict, Salvador de Bahia for instance, would change hands back and forth twice; raids and acts of privateering were common as well. The result of the war was that Portugal won in South America (Dutch Brazil) and Africa (Angola and São Tomé), and the Dutch were the victors in the Far East and South Asia. The war was concluded in 1661, and the terms were settled with this treatise; it´s importance for both the West and East Indies was considerable, and translations soon were prepared. The result of the treatise shaped the future of Asian and American colonies for about a century, with remnants of their colonization present to-date in architecture, language, etc. “This treaty between Portugal and the States General relates to Brazil” (Sabin). Rare, no copies have appeared at auction in the last 30 years. Sabin, 2157; European Americana III, 172; Borba de Moraes, 50; Rodrigues, 695.

Lucian
Published by Oxford Printed by H. Hall for R. Davis, 1663. Small folio. pp [16], 398, [2], fine engraved frontispiece portrait bust of Lucian by Faithmore, with verse underneath, bound in contemporary speckled polished calf, spine with braided bands and red Morocco label, sympathetically rebacked by the Heitage Bindery using the original spine. A very good fresh copy throughout with nice margins now housed in a cloth clamshell box with a red morocco label. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Much confusion surrounds this title, as to whether or not it was issued with the second edition of Hicks’ translated Lucian, as indicated by the title page, but nowhere else referred to. Hick’s second edition was indeed issued in 1663, though by a different publisher, and is often found bound up with the second issue of the present collection, which is dated 1664. Copies of this 1663 first issue appears to be complete without it. Since this copy is in a contemporary binding, it’s independence of the Hick’s is quite certain. Madan makes this clear when he says [III. 2642]: “The two parts are entirely unconnected, even by references to each other. The whole of Mayne was printed in Oxford, and the whole of Hicks reprinted in London. I have not yet seen any 1663 copy with the Hick’s part, but only separately published, in spite of the title. Madan thought this copy to be rare and without a portrait, though this copy does have one. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Text little browned throughout, a few light pencil markings, erased ownership signature on title. Very good copy. ---- Poggendorff II, 1235. FIRST EDITION of Vossius' response to the objections of Johannes de Bruyn (1620-1675) and Pierre Petit (1617-1687) against his 1662 published theory of light, De lucis natura et proprietate (see Willems 1296 and Rahir 1334). Vossius (or Voss), born in Leyden and resident in England from 1670, became a canon of the royal chapel at Windsor, despite his philosophical doubts (Charles II is reputed to have remarked of him that he would believe anything if only it were not in the Bible). He was a versatile scholar who published on many subjects including poetry, history and science, including De lucis natura, which is directed against the predominant Cartesianism and includes the first printed account of Snel's law of refraction of light rays. Snel formulated this law around 1621 after extensive study of Kepler and Risner, and through their works Ibn al-Haytham and Witelo. - Visit our website for additional images and information.

RARE FIRST EDITION. This alchemical treatise on fermentation by Martin Kerger (1622?-1691) is largely based on the doctrines of van Helmont and Willis. The Author has filled this work with chemical details and uses fermentation to explain digestion. In his book, Kerger also speculates about palingenesis, mentioning a resurrection experiment by Kenelm Digby. Martin Kerger is disreputably noted for his accusations against the well-known Justina Siegemund, who practised midwifery in Liegnitz at the same time when he was the town physician. Siegemund had to deal with criticism and reproaches by Kerger who accused her in 1680 of the use of unsafe birthing practices. The conflict went to trial, with Kerger styling himself as the guardian of the midwife order, while Siegemund could bring in numerous witnesses, including women she cared for, husbands and other midwives who relieved her.
