Johannes BLAEU (Alkmaar 1571 - Amsterdam 1663)
Bibliografia: Koem … [Click Below for Full Description]

TERENCE
London: Printed for the Company of Stationers, 1663. This is a charming diglot edition of Terence's comedies geared toward young audiences, seen here in a convincing retrospective binding. Flourishing in the second century B.C., Terence has given us six extant plays, the ancestors of drawing room and modern situation comedies featuring crusty fathers, rebellious sons, and impudent slaves whose machinations solve the playwright's intricate complications of plot. The plays were popular throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and still retain their appeal. Charles Hoole (1610-67) is responsible for this translation; as a cleric and educator he published several books of Latin grammar and translations specifically "For the use of young Scholars," including the present work. This book was undoubtedly used by at least two young scholars, whose loopy, unpracticed hands have each certified it as "his book." Given this ownership, our copy is remarkably well preserved and all the more desirable for its replica binding by Philip Dusel. Dusel's modern interpretations of classic binding styles impress with their fidelity, and they often innocently deceive all but the most sophisticated collector. When Bernard Middleton, the dean of British book conservators, saw examples of Dusel's work in California, he is reported to have said he was going to go away and shoot himself. Dusel's bindings are not signed, but this is certainly his work (the volume was formerly in the inventory of the dealer who is one of the binder's chief clients).. 157 x 97 mm. (6 1/4 x 3 3/4"). 2 p.l., 247, [1] … [Click Below for Full Description]

PASCAL (Blaise)

PATIN, Charles
Jean du Bray & Pierre Variquet, 1663. With engraved vignette on title and the famous portrait of "Monsieur Charles Patin" by Claude Lefebvre, French painter and etcher. Contemporary full calf, slightly warped and somewhat worn; first and last leaves browned around the edges, small waterstain on last blank and paste - down, text in excellent condition. First edition of this very rare treatise describing the use of peat as a fuel. The author discusses the varieties and sources of combustible peat used to make charcoal as well as many useful by - products in agriculture, cooking and botany. At the time, charcoal was believed to mainly consist of bitumen and sulpher, causing strong fumes, which Patin was much opposed to because of his concern with dangers of health caused by inhalation. Proficient in metallurgy, Patin was an early advocate of ecology, with his knowledge that strong organic matter accumulates in the ground and gives rise to significant drops in mineral contents, causing many problems for plant growth. At the end of the book is a proposal of the Sieur de Chambre for the artificial production of peat bogs surrounding Paris along with royal letter patent for a thirty year process. Patin (1633 - 1693), the gifted son of Gui Patin, by the age of 23 completed his law studies and received his M.D. degree. He taught anatomy and pathology at the medical school of Paris, but was obliged to leave France for fear of imprisonment for circulation of certain libels which drew upon him the resentment of the court. He traveled extensively, finally settling in Padua, Italy, where … [Click Below for Full Description]
