BLAEU, JOHANNES [1598-1673]
Amsterdam c.1663(). Hand-coloured map (approx. 42.5 x 53cm) from Volume V of Blaeu's Atlas of England and Wales. French text on verso. Blaeu's decorative map shows the British Isles at the time of the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy; the seven ancient kingdoms of Kent, the South Saxons, West Saxons, East Saxons, Northumberland, East Anglia and Mercia. The historical map is embellished with border panels depicting the seven Kings in full battle dress & armour, and with scenes illustrating the conversion of each of the seven kingdoms to Christianity in wake of St. Augustine's arrival in England in the year 597 AD. Blaeu's Atlas was published a number of times from 1645 until his workshop burned down in 1672 in Latin, Dutch, French, Spanish of German. A VERY GOOD EXAMPLE.

GLASER, Christophle.
Paris: Chez l'autheur, 1663. First edition. One of the most important chemical textbooks of the 17th century. Rare first edition of this very important chemistry text, which went through some thirteen editions between 1663 and 1710. It is one of the earliest attempts to strip chemistry from its alchemical mysticism and to describe chemical preparations in an unambiguous manner. "The work is divided into two books: book I briefly describes the utility, definitions, principles, operations, and apparatus of chemistry: book II is devoted to a description of medicinal preparations drawn from the mineral, vegetable, and animal kingdoms. The section devoted to mineral remedies is by far the largest. Little is novel in these preparations, although Glaser displays individual refinements of technique. His recipe for a sel antifebrile (potassium sulfate made by heating saltpeter and sulfur and recrystallizing from water) became uniquely identified with him and was later known as sel polychrestum Glaseri. The naturally occurring mixed sulfate of sodium and potassium (3K2SO4:Na2SO4) was named glaserite in his honor." (DSB). 8vo (162 x 98 mm), bound in 19th century fine half calf over marbled boards, richly gilt spine with red title label, joints starting but still strong and intact, edges died in red, corners in green vellum. Fully complete: pp [2:engraved title], [viii], 1-378, [3:privilege] and 2 folding engraved plates. A very fine and clean copy. Rare.

LANSBERGE, Philip van.
Bierens de Haan 2675; STCN (5 copies); not in Poggendorff; for Lansberge: DSB VIII, pp. 27-28; NNBW II, cols. 775-782. Rare first (and only Latin) edition of Van Lansberge's detailed and well-illustrated treatise on sundials, posthumously published by Zacharias Roman in Middelburg, who had published most of his works. Roman says he found this text in manuscript among the papers of Van Lansberge's estate. Planning the publication of the complete works, he decided to publish this text as well. The present treatise was designed to be bound with the Opera omnia, published in the same year. From the library of Christopher St. John Hume Daniel, author of several recent books on sundials. Lacking folios A2-3, containing Roman's dedication to Nicolaas Blanckaert and brief note to the reader, and with a few of the figures shaved by the binder, but otherwise in very good condition.

Contemporary Leather with 7 raised bands and clasps, decorated with gold, large Folio H. 44,5 x L. 28,5 x W. 9/7 cm. (The bindings are slightly grazed at some places, the bottom of the spines are somewhat restored, some wormholes in the inner margin. With the 6 folding maps by Nicolaes Visscher and interleaved with the series of prints by Cornelis Danckerts after Mattheüs Merian. This series of prints features 6 times 16 engravings on 2 folio sized leaves. This Bible was the first Dutch Bible that was printed in a Roman font. Remarkable is that the text blocks are still in a good condition, the Elzevier printing office experimented a lot to create the blackest of inks. Because of this the text blocks are in almost every case very browned. Attractive set bound in brown-red leather with clasps and decorated with gilt on both the boards and the spine with a design of flowers and vines.) 2 delen, (titelprent, 22) 468, (13) 167 (2) 77 folia.
