        Messina Ville del Sicile

Bibliografia: Koeman pp. 332/338, Cremonini pp. 83 - 90. Amsterdam Amsterdam 530 420

Verses lately written upon several occasions

London: Printed for Henry Herringman, 1663. A reissue, with cancel title-page. [iv], 58 pp. 8vo. Contemporary calf; a few old gouges, short tear on lower margin of C2, long tear cutting through a dozen lines of verse on D2. A reissue, with cancel title-page. [iv], 58 pp. 8vo. Scarce. "In 1663 there appeared in Dublin a miscellany entitled Poems by several persons, containing verse mainly by Cowley, together with poems by Roger Boyle, Lord Orrery, Katherine Philips, and Clement Paman. Just how a Dublin printer should have come by the texts of poems by Cowley, some of them previously unpublished, is not entirely clear, though it seems plausible that Orrery, as a sometime patron of Cowley's, may have been responsible. Be that as it may, Cowley and his new publisher, Henry Herringman, acted quickly to secure the English copyright and supply a more accurate version of the texts, Verses, lately written upon several occasions. This slim volume contains emended texts of Cowley's poems from the Dublin volume, a reprint of his Restoration ode, and a previously unpublished ode upon Dr William Hervey, discoverer of the circulation of the blood. That it was very much an interim publication is shown by the subsequent relocation of six of the poems within the posthumous Essays in verse and prose" (ODNB). Wing C6693; ESTC R38829. Offerece a .

Lisbon, Na Officina de Henrique Valente de Oliveira, 1663. - 4°, disbound. Woodcut initial and tailpiece. Minor soiling. Final line on title page cut close at lower margin. In good to very good condition. (1 l.), 13, (1) pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this poem celebrating the victory of twenty-year-old D. Afonso VI at the Battle of Ameixial on June 8, 1663. In Spain it is usually called the Battle of Estremoz; here it is referred to as the Battle of Canal, after the parish near Évora where the battle took place. This was one of the major battles of the Restauração, which effectively ended Spain?s attempt to undo Portuguese independence, finally recognized in 1668. The Spanish had overrun southern Portugal under the leadership of D. Juan de Austria, natural son of Philip IV of Spain. The Portuguese, reinforced by English troops and led by Schomberg, inflicted heavy casualties and forced the Spanish to retreat across the border to Badajoz. The Spanish garrison at Évora surrendered soon afterwards.Frei Jeronymo Vahia (1620?/1630?-1688), court preacher to D. Afonso VI, was in his time a famous orator and poet. Born in Coimbra (some say near Viana do Castelo), he became a Benedictine monk in 1643, eventually becoming cronista of the Order. Over 500 pages of his poems, in the style of Gongora, appeared in Fénix Renascida, volumes I-IV. Innocêncio, who complains of his "violentas metaphoras, e conceitos exquisitamente esquadrinhados," confusingly adds that if he hadn't succumbed to the "mania que predominava entre os seus contemporaneos," Vahia would be considered one of Portugal's best poets. Of late there have been reevaluations and increased interest in the poetry of this period in general, and in this author in particular.*** Arouca V2.         Chronica da Companhia de Jesu do Estado do Brasil ….

Lisbon, Na Officina de Henrique Valente de Oliveira, Impressor delRey, 1663.. First Edition. Folio (34.9 x 24.7 cm.), modern period crimson morocco (lower half of front joint cracked and repaired, minor wear and rubbing to corners, head of spine, raised bands), richly gilt-tooled on both covers, spine richly gilt with raised bands in six compartments, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endleaves, text block edges sprinkled red and brown (from a contemporary binding). Printed in 2 columns, with double-rule border between columns and around edges. Repair to outer margin of final leaf and about 12 x 3 cm. to leaf Aa4. Light dampstains at lower margins of final 22 leaves. Minor, light soiling to engraved and printed title pages. Internally close to fine; overall in very good condition. Old, unidentified floral embossed stamp in outer margins of both title pages. Engraved title-page, (6 ll.), 188 pp. [lacking pp. 179-184, as in all known copies], 528 pp., (6 ll.). *** FIRST EDITION. Borba de Moraes comments, "The @Chronica is considered by Portuguese bibliophiles to be a typographical masterpiece …. The frontispiece engraved by A. Clauwet is missing in many copies. The @Chronica is a fundamental book concerning the history of Brazil, and contains the first printing of P. José de Anchieta's poem to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is rare today." Borba also points out that most copies have rather narrow margins, cut close to the border. In this copy the upper margins extend as high as 2 cm. beyond the border, the outer ones can be almost 2 cm., while the lower margins are sometimes almost 2.5 cm.; the overall size of the pages is 33.3 x 23.7 cm. After the work had been printed, Father Jacinto de Magistris pointed out a passage in the section "Noticias antecedentes, curiosas, e necessarias" in which Vasconcellos speculated that the earthly paradise was located in Portuguese America. The ten copies that had been distributed were hastily recalled, and pages 179-184, containing this possible heresy, were excised. In this copy they are missing, as in all other copies known. At the end of the volume (pp. 481-528) is the first appearance in print of Father José de Anchieta's 5,786-verse neo-Latin poem @De beata Virgine Dei matre Maria. Anchieta, "the Apostle of Brazil," vowed to write a poem on the Virgin's life while negotiating with the Tamoyos at Iperoig, in order to keep himself from being tempted by Indian women. Since he had no paper or writing instruments, the story goes, he traced the verses on the sand and memorized what he had written each day. The poem was subsequently printed in Vasconcellos' @Vida do veneravel Padre Joseph de Anchieta, Lisbon 1672, and many times thereafter. The beautiful engraved frontispiece, by A. Clouwet of Antwerp, shows a ship with sails unfurled, representing the Society of Jesus; several Jesuits can be seen aboard the vessel. The border of the engraving incorporates Brazilian flora and fauna, such as monkeys and a crocodile. Vasconcellos (1597-1671), a native of Porto, grew up in Brazil and entered the Jesuit order at Bahia in 1616. He accompanied Father António Vieira to Lisbon in 1641 and served as Jesuit Provincial in Brazil, which gave him access to a great deal of primary material. He died in Rio de Janeiro. *** Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 888-9. Berger, @Bibliografia do Rio de Janeiro (1980) p. 450. Brunet II, 846. Arouca V51. Innocêncio VII, 286; XIX, 234.         The Jurisdiction of the Admiralty of England Asserted Against.

1663 - Zouch on Admiralty Jurisdiction Zouch, Richard [1590-1661]. The Jurisdiction of the Admiralty of England Asserted, Against Sr. Edward Coke's Articuli Admiralitatis, in XXII Chapter of His Jurisdiction of Courts. London: Printed for F. Tyton and T. Dring, 1663. [xvi], 152 pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4"). Recent period-style calf, blind rules to boards, gilt-edged raised bands and lettering piece to spine, title page re-hinged. Moderate toning to text, light foxing and finger smudges to a few leaves, light soiling and minor edgewear to title page. Ex-library. Faint embossed seal to title page, brief annotations to verso. A nice copy in a handsome binding. * First edition. The expansion and improvement in English naval power under Cromwell and Great Britain's growth as a maritime power created a demand for works on admiralty law. Also, the controversy between the admiralty and the common law courts for jurisdiction, which culminated during the chief justiceship of Lord Coke, elicited several publications in which the law merchant and the civil law play prominent parts. Along with Godolphin's A View of the Admiral Jurisdiction (1653), Zouch's treatise was among the first to address this need, and one of the most important. One of England's greatest civilians, he was an advocate of Doctors' Commons, Judge of the High Court of Admiralty and Regius Professor of Civil Law at Oxford. He published treatises on a broad range of legal topics and is renowned for his contributions to international law. Later editions were published in 1683 and 1685. It was also reissued in the 1686 edition of Malynes's Lex Mercatoria. English Short-Title Catalogue R21844. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        wandkaart Amsterdam - Daniel Stalpaert.

Prijs: € 18.500,-GERESERVEERD.
