Della Valle, Pietro (1586-1652).
Presso Paolo Baglioni, Venetia, 1661. 792 pp., [35, index], Italian text, titles within double line borders, woodcut title vignettes, initials, full vellum, speckled edges, few worm wholes on margin of title page & few first & end leaves, not affecting text, few underlining, otherwise copy in very good condition. One of the classic early European accounts of Persia. Valle's writings (1586-1652) are considered the richest, most sophisticated contemporary record we have of the state of the world in the first quarter of the Seventeenth Century. Valle set off for Constantinople in June 1614 eventually spending over a year there, from Constantinople he sailed for Alexandria, he visited Cairo and learned Arabic and Turkish. From Cairo he travelled to Gaza and Jerusalem and then north to Aleppo by the way of Galilee and Damascus. In 1616 Della Valle travelled by the desert route to Baghdad, he married an Iraqi girl from Babylon and together they proceeded to Isfahan, and after a brave journey North to the great plain of Mazandaran & Gilan, he secured an interview with Shah Abbas whose seductive qualities, combining power, charm & eccentricity, kept him in Persia for six years. He wrote a great portrait of Shah Abbas, and visited Qazwin, Tehran and Shiraz. In October 1621, he left Isfahan for Oman and from there to India. This work covers Della Valle's travels to Persia. Mansur bin Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Yusuf bin Faqir Ilyas.
1661. 4to (180 x 283 mm). Persian manuscript on paper, 33 leaves, 24 lines to the page written in small neat nasta'liq script in black ink, significant words and headings picked out in red, 6 main diagrams with numerous captions, 6 further unfinished or preparatory diagrams, probably used for teaching purposes. Wants binding. A manuscript of the author's principal work, the "Tashrih-i badan insan": the first coloured atlas of the human body, the achievement for which the early 15th century Persian physician Mansur from Shiraz, Timurid Persia, is best known. The 12 diagrams illustrate the skeletal and the nervous system, the muscles, arteries, veins, and an embryo in the womb. While Mansur's "Anatomy" was not the first notation of the human body, it is considered the first colour atlas ever created. It led to a substantial change in the contemporary Islamic perception of human anatomy, as such an atlas had previously been considered contrary to Islamic law. Mansur is also credited with one of the earliest anatomical sketches of a pregnant woman: while his other illustrations are likely inspired by earlier Latin and Greek writings, the pregnant woman is considered an original work. - Some edge defects (remargined, with occasional loss to text), wants binding.

Apparently, there were two editions issued in Japan in 1623, another in 1635, and a final edition in 1661; all are extremely rare. We can trace only one copy of any edition in North American libraries: the 1635 edition at Harvard. Our copy is identical to the 1661 set held by Waseda University.Jiang (1503-65), an Anhui physician, compiled this famous collection of medical case histories in 1549 which was first printed, after considerable revision by his son Yingsu (fl. 1591), in China in 1591 with the title Mingyi lei'an. It was the "first anthology of case histories of famous physicians from throughout Chinese history, organized according to specific syndromes within main medical subjects, [and] published as an independent text for sale to the public…"Jiang Guan organized the Classified Medical Case Histories neither chronologically nor by individual physician, but rather medically according to 205 classes of syndromes (bingzheng). Starting with the general syndromes of internal medicine (neike) - Cold Damage, Inner Damage, and Hot factor disorders - he followed with the classes of more specialized syndromes such as menstrual problems in gynecology (fuke), various poxes under pediatrics (erke), and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Octavo (141 x 95 mm). Contemporary limp vellum. A little browning to one or two gatherings, a very good copy. Second edition, following the Giunti edition of 1612, of the first published textbook of glassmaking. One special appeal of Neri's book was that it revealed the carefully guarded secrets of Venetian glassmakers, which the author had pieced together from working alongside Venetian craftsmen who had relocated to Pisa and Antwerp. "L'arte belongs to the medieval tradition of manuscript recipe books. It is divided into seven books, the first being the most interesting, dealing with the materials of glassmaking and their mixing and melting to form crystal and other colourless glasses. Other sections deal with coloured glasses and the making of enamels for goldsmiths' use. Although it was noted by Galileo …, the book made little impression for half a century" (Day & McNeil, eds., Biographical Dictionary of the History of Technology). The publication of this second edition triggered a renewed wave of interest, with another Italian edition appearing in Venice in 1663. It formed the basis of Christopher Merret's first English translation, published in London in 1662, with a dedication to Robert Boyle, which in turn inspired translations in German, Latin, French, and Spanish, making L'Arte vetraria the best known manual of glassmaking throughout … [Click Below for Full Description]

Only edition of this rare work discussing the principal instruments of machinery; no biographical information appears to exist for this german mechanic of the last half of the 17th century. The work was edited by the austrian Martin Stier (1630-1669), a mi … [Click Below for Full Description]
