NERI, Antonio.
Florence: for Marco Rabbuiati, 1661. Octavo (141 x 95 mm). Contemporary limp vellum. A little browning to one or two gatherings, a very good copy. Second edition, following the Giunti edition of 1612, of the first published textbook of glassmaking. One special appeal of Neri's book was that it revealed the carefully guarded secrets of Venetian glassmakers, which the author had pieced together from working alongside Venetian craftsmen who had relocated to Pisa and Antwerp. "L'arte belongs to the medieval tradition of manuscript recipe books. It is divided into seven books, the first being the most interesting, dealing with the materials of glassmaking and their mixing and melting to form crystal and other colourless glasses. Other sections deal with coloured glasses and the making of enamels for goldsmiths' use. Although it was noted by Galileo , the book made little impression for half a century" (Day & McNeil, eds., Biographical Dictionary of the History of Technology). The publication of this second edition triggered a renewed wave of interest, with another Italian edition appearing in Venice in 1663. It formed the basis of Christopher Merret's first English translation, published in London in 1662, with a dedication to Robert Boyle, which in turn inspired translations in German, Latin, French, and Spanish, making L'Arte vetraria the best known manual of glassmaking throughout Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Madrid: 1661. Hardcover. Uncommon early Spanish law book originally printed in 1631. The book is a review and practice for scribes, early officials of the courts, written by the Camara scriviner of "His Majesty." Bound in later marbled boards with leather spine. Gilt partial title and decorations to spine separated by gilt lines. Front and back boards somewhat bowed. Front hinge has pulled away from the text block but the rear board and the interior pages are tight. Inner pages show browning and spotting, some pages more than others, not affecting the legibility of the text or the shoulder notes. Top page edges have been trimmed to fit binding. Some have been cut very close to the text, but it does not appear that any of the text is missing except for loss of chapter headers and the first word of the title page. .Two pages near rear have been torn in the margin along the fore edges, one of which intrudes very slightly into the text. There are also tears to the top fore edge margins of the indices at the end, again not affecting the readibility. Bookplate of noted Baltimore book collector Alfred J. O'Ferrall on front free end paper with ink ownership signature on facing page. Unpaginated. LAW/012910. Good.

STILLINGFLEET, Edward
London: R.W. for Henry Mortlock, 1661. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Edward Stillingfleet was a 17th-century British theologian known for his defensive views on Anglicanism. His first work, which (negatively) set the tone for his literary career, was 'The Irenicum', a work which advocated for compromise between the Presbyterian and Anglican Orthodox churches. While the root of the work is founded in theological church models and structures, Stillingfleet covers a variety of philosophical ideas including the state of natural law. According to Morison and Richardson, "'The Irenicum' was set forth the assuage the spirit of sectarian bitterness; it was an attempt to show that there was no plan of Church Order laid down in the New Testament; and it bears just as strongly against notions of divine institution of Presbyterianism." 'Irenicum' was published before the church was re-established and contributed to debates about ecclesiastical restoration by showing the legitimacy of obeying decisions on rites and worship left undetermined in the Bible. (Rose, p.141ff). Stillingfleet made controversial claims about the legal authority the church had over the law - however, he did push the concept of strict obedience to the law as it was divinely inspired. Moreover, the church was responsible for advising on the content of the laws, but the actual governing power and law enforcement remained with the magistrate. (Rose, 143).

Husain Ibn Ali al-Tughrai
Oxonii : Apud R. Davis, 1661. First edition. 1661 1ed Carmen Tograi ARABIC Poetry Pococke Oriental Islam Alchemy Ali Tughrai One of the first Arabic books published in England! In the early 17th-century, English scholar Edward Pococke took a special interest in Oriental studies, focusing on Arabic and Hebrew manuscripts while he lived in the Levant. Upon his return to England, he was given the position of professor of Arabic at Oxford where he began work on a course of Lectures upon the Proverbs ascribed to Caliph ‘Ali’. Pococke used these proverbs, as well as ‘Carmen Tograi’ to help teach Arabic grammar, the latter he translated into Latin and included an extensive commentary in 1661. The ‘Lamiyyat al-Ajam’ or as it is more commonly known ‘Carmen Tograi’ or ‘The Traveler’, is an early 12th-century Arabic poem written by Arab alchemist Husain Ibn Ali al-Tughrai. (Russell, p.64). This work was originally written in 59 stanzas, each ending in the same letter – a trait highly admired by Arabic-speaking lands. (Toomer, p.212). In addition to the poetry and commentary, this work features a Latin/Arabic prosody, or poetic dictionary, by Samuel Clarke which describes the words, meter, and rhythmic interest of the Arabic poem. Zaragoza: Por Augustin Verges, A los Senales, 1661. 8°: [4 pp.], bound in modern marbled paper (Very Good, some light even toning and wear along gutter but not affecting text). ZARAGOZA IMPRINT - TURKISH WARS - ANGLO-PORTUGUESE ALLIANCE: A very rare Zaragoza imprint covering events across Europe during the late spring and early summer of 1661, focussing on the Ottoman takeover of Transylvania, the Venetian-Ottoman conflict in both Dalmatia and Crete, as well as the renewal of the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance that would ultimately secure Lisbon’s long-term independence from Madrid. This intriguing little work, printed in Zaragoza, covers major events across Europe that occurred in the late spring and early summer of 1661; notably, the Ottoman takeover of Transylvania, the VenetianOttoman conflict in both Dalmatia and Crete, as well as the renewal of the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance that would ultimately ensure Lisbon’s independence from Madrid. The publisher, Augustín Verges, would have gleaned the information from foreign newspapers and broadsides. In Spain, during this period before regular newsletters were common (Spain’s first newspaper, the Gaceta de Madrid, an official government organ, was founded in 1661) and when all publishing was heavily censored, the public depended upon officially licensed pamphlets and broadsides for knowledge of current events abroad. The present work is very rare. Vague bibliographical references indicate that there are perhaps a couple of other examples in institutions, although we cannot trace their whereabouts (perhaps they are in provincial Spa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam,: Johannes Janssonius, 1661. DescriptionFirst edition, second issue. Folio (508 by 335mm), engraved allegorical title by F.H. van Hoven and 29 double-page astronomical maps, all finely coloured by a contemporary hand, title heightened in gold and silver, charts heightened in gold, title with areas of oxidisation, contemporary armorial red morocco gilt, gilt panelled sides with gilt fleurons in corners of central panel and gilt decorations composed of drawer handle and other tools filling the broad outer frame at the four corners, spine gilt with eight raised bands. NotesThe finest celestial atlas ever realized. The first 21 sumptuous Baroque style charts beautifully represent the three competing astronomical models of the day: the Ptolemaic, Copernican and the Tychonic. The Ptolemaic was the oldest of the celestial theories, and, until the beginning of the sixteenth century, was the accepted doctrine on planetary motion. Ptolemy proposed a geocentric solar system with the sun, planets, and fixed stars borne on concentric spherical shells orbiting a stationary earth. The theory was endorsed by the church, who saw it as reinforcing mans position at the centre of Gods universe, and approved of the dichotomy between the ever-changing sinful earth and the immutable motion of the heavens. The theory was given some scientific credence by the father of physics: Aristotle. By the turn of the sixteenth century and the dawn of the Age of Discovery, however, the model was beginning to show signs of age. DUDLEY, Robert
Florence,: Giuseppe Cocchini, , 1661.. Engraved map. Map showing the coastlines of China, Taiwan and Japan bordering the East China Sea. From the ‘Arcano del Mare', one the “greatest atlases of the world” (Wardington). First published in 1646 when its author, Robert Dudley, was 73, it was not only the first sea atlas of the world, but also the first to use Mercator's projection; the earliest to show magnetic deviation; the first to show currents and prevailing winds; the first to expound the advantages of ‘Great Circle Sailing' – the shortest distance between two points on a globe; and “perhaps less importantly the first sea-atlas to be compiled by an Englishman, albeit abroad in Italy” (Wardington). Robert Dudley (1573–1649) was the son of the Earl of Leicester (the one time favourite of Elizabeth I) and Lady Douglas Sheffield, the widow of Lord Sheffield. Although born out of wedlock, Robert received the education and privileges of a Tudor nobleman. He seems to have been interested in naval matters from an early age, and in 1594, at the age of 21, he led an expedition to the Orinoco River and Guiana. His success upon the high-seas was not matched, unfortunately, by his luck at court, and at the beginning of the seventeenth century he was forced to flee, along with his cousin Elizabeth Southwell, to Europe. Eventually he ended up in Florence at the court of Grand Duke Ferdinand I of Tuscany, where he not only married his cousin and converted to Catholicism, but also help Ferdinand wage war against the Mediterranean pirates. In his spare time he set about his great life' … [Click Below for Full Description]

DUDLEY, Robert
Florence, 1661. Florence,, 1661.. Engraved chart. Robert Dudley's map of Iceland and the Faroe Islands, from his great atlas ‘Arcano del Mare'. The map shows Iceland in beautifully engraved detail, enlivened by an erupting Mount Hekla. To the lower left is Frislandia, a phantom island that often appeared on maps of the area. The term “Frisland” may have originally referred to Iceland, but after the Zeno map of 1558 it was often shown as a different landmass, with totally fictional place names. The ‘Arcano del Mare' is one the “greatest atlases of the world” (Wardington). His success upon the high-seas was not matched, unfortunately, by his luck at court, and at the beginning of the seve … [Click Below for Full Description]

Item #03235 First Edition of One of the Rarest of Athanasius Kircher's Books "Post-Vesuvius Crosses" KIRCHER, Athanasius. Diatribe de prodigiosi Crucibus: quae tam supra vestes hominum, quam res alias, non pridem post vltimum incendium Vesuuij Montis Neapoli Comparuerunt. Roma: Vitale Mascardi, 1661. First edition. "During 1661 a further work was published by Kircher which brought a refreshingly rational approach to a problem worrying the people of Naples. Mysterious crosses had been appearing on clothing and all manner of fabrics. In this Diatribe de prodigiosis crucibus Kircher proved that the suspected indication of heavenly wrath was little more than the presence in the air around Vesuvius-dominated Naples of minute specks of volcanic ash, settling on the texture of woven cloth." (John Fletcher. A study of the life and works of Athanasius Kircher, p. 51). One of the rarest of all works in first edition by Kircher and near impossible to find in the marketplace, Diatribe de Prodigiosis Crucibus "attempts to explain the uncanny appearance of crosses on clothing … [Click Below for Full Description]

FER, Nicolas de.
Splendid atlas of fortifications of the cities of Europe (plus Malta and some other Mediterranean sites), combined with a maritime atlas of the French coasts, published by Pieter Mortier (1661-1711). Both are based on the similar publications of Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) and falsely indicate that they were published by him.Ad 1: The atlas of fortified cities of Europe. Many of the plans show the work of the greatest 17th-century masters of the art and science of fortification, including Samuel Marolois, Simon Stevin and Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. The last two parts contain primarily smaller maps, printed 4 to the page. Ad 2: The maritime atlas of the coasts of France. It also shows the fortifications along the coasts, so it complements the fortifications atlas and was clearly designed to match it in format and style. With the caption of one plate cut off and 2 plates and 1 letterpress title-page somewhat browned. Further in good condition. A couple plates are bound in the wrong volume. A splendid fortifications atlas.Ad 1: Muller, Historieplaten 3034a; cf. Pastoureau, Atlas français, IX A & H (pp. 203-209, 213); ad 2: Muller, Historieplaten 3034a; Pastoureau, Les atlas français XVIe-XVIIe siècles, Fer VIII B? (p. 203, cf. pp. 201-203)..

GALILEI, Galileo.) SALUSBURY, Thomas, trans.
London: printed by William Leybourn, 1661. 2 parts in 1 volume as issued, folio (338 x 219 mm). Nineteenth-century half calf, brown cloth sides with the emblem of University College London stamped in gilt, marbled endpapers. Bound without half-title and errata leaf. Minor rubbing to binding, trivial splits to first plate folds, tiny chip to PP1, XX1, HHH, XXX2 FFFF1, small chip to corner of MMM4, small burnhole to GGGG2, none of these affecting text. Stain in bottom corner of final section, with last few leaves a little frayed, creased and soiled. A well-preserved, crisp copy. With 4 folding plates, numerous printed diagrams and woodcut and copper engravings in text. First edition in English of Galileo's Dialogo, the major work to be included in volume I, and the first vernacular translation in any language. The Systeme of the World, followed by the short but important Epistle to the Grand Dutchesse Mother concerning the Authority of Holy Scripture in Philosophical Controversies (known today as the Letter to Christina), was only the second work of Galileo's to be published in England. It preceded the Latin edition, published in London by Thomas Dicas, by two years and remained the only vernacular translation for two centuries. Apart from the two works by Galileo, Salusbury included seven other translations from Italian and Latin in volume I of his Collections. The second volume, including an extensive life of Galileo in part two, was published in 1665 but almost totally destroyed in the Great Fire of London. The Brereton-Macclesfield copy is apparently unique in containing … [Click Below for Full Description]
