"During 1661 a further work was published by Kircher which brought a refreshingly rational approach to a problem worrying the people of Naples. Mysterious crosses had been appearing on clothing and all manner of fabrics. In this Diatribe de prodigiosis crucibus Kircher proved that the suspected indication of heavenly wrath was little more than the presence in the air around Vesuvius-dominated Naples of minute specks of volcanic ash, settling on the texture of woven cloth." (John Fletcher. A study of the life and works of Athanasius Kircher, p. 51). One of the rarest of all works in first edition by Kircher and near impossible to find in the marketplace, Diatribe de Prodigiosis Crucibus "attempts to explain the uncanny appearance of crosses on clothing … [Click Below for Full Description]

FER, Nicolas de.
, . . Ad 1: Muller, Historieplaten 3034a; cf. Pastoureau, Atlas français, IX A & H (pp. 203-209, 213); ad 2: Muller, Historieplaten 3034a; Pastoureau, Les atlas français XVIe-XVIIe siècles, Fer VIII B? (p. 203, cf. pp. 201-203). Splendid atlas of fortifications of the cities of Europe (plus Malta and some other Mediterranean sites), combined with a maritime atlas of the French coasts, published by Pieter Mortier (1661-1711). Both are based on the similar publications of Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) and falsely indicate that they were published by him.Ad 1: The atlas of fortified cities of Europe. Many of the plans show the work of the greatest 17th-century masters of the art and science of fortification, including Samuel Marolois, Simon Stevin and Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. The last two parts contain primarily smaller maps, printed 4 to the page. Ad 2: The maritime atlas of the coasts of France. It also shows the fortifications along the coasts, so it complements the fortifications atlas and was clearly designed to match it in format and style. With the caption of one plate cut off and 2 plates and 1 letterpress title-page somewhat browned. Further in good condition. A couple plates are bound in the wrong volume. A splendid fortifications atlas.

Nineteenth-century half calf, brown cloth sides with the emblem of University College London stamped in gilt, marbled endpapers. Bound without half-title and errata leaf. Minor rubbing to binding, trivial splits to first plate folds, tiny chip to PP1, XX1, HHH, XXX2 FFFF1, small chip to corner of MMM4, small burnhole to GGGG2, none of these affecting text. With 4 folding plates, numerous printed diagrams and woodcut and copper engravings in text. First edition in English of Galileo's Dialogo, the major work to be included in volume I, and the first vernacular translation in any language. The Systeme of the World, followed by the short but important Epistle to the Grand Dutchesse Mother concerning the Authority of Holy Scripture in Philosophical Controversies (known today as the Letter to Christina), was only the second work of Galileo's to be published in England. It preceded the Latin edition, published in London by Thomas Dicas, by two years and remained the only vernacular translation for two centuries. Apart from the two works by Galileo, Salusbury included seven other translations from Italian and Latin in volume I of his Collections. The second volume, including an extensive life of Galileo in part two, was published in 1665 but almost totally destroyed in the Great Fire of London. The Brereton-Macclesfield copy is apparently unique in containing … [Click Below for Full Description]

BACON, SIR FRANCIS
London: Printed for R.H. and H.B., 1661, 1661. First edition. Gibson 232; Wing B-302; ESTC R3667. Very good copy.. 4to, modern light brown calf, brown paper boards, gilt lettering. George Villiers (1592-1628) was made a royal favorite of King James in 1616, and shortly after became the first Duke of Buckingham and one of the most influential men in England. Francis Bacon (1561-1626), himself no stranger to the uses and abuses of power and royal favorites, wrote this epistolary essay to Buckingham on character and civil government. He begins with some generalizations e.g.: "A false friend is more dangerous than an open Enemy," and some specifics: "It is true that the whole Kingdom hath cast their eye upon you, as the new rising Star, and no man thinks his business can prosper at Court, unless he hath you for his good Angel." Bacon then proposes five rules for Buckingham to observe in his new position. Within a few years, Bacon was created Lord Chancellor and Viscount St. Alban, with Buckingham's help. Extensively underlined in ink by an early if not contemporary reader; some annotations on the title-page and in the margins in presumably he same hand, most of which have been trimmed by the binder, who otherwise spared the margins. Large armorial bookplate of Fairfax of Cameron on the front paste-down, over which is tipped a bookseller's catalogue description. Bookplate of Nicholas Wall, with the motto "Sometime his book," on the rear paste-down.

He was a descendant, direct or collateral, of Rowland Taylor the martyr, but the exact line of descent has never been proved. On 27 Jan. 1661 Taylor was consecrated in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, with eleven other prelates. The whole Irish hierarchy seems to have been present; but Henry Jones, D.D. Mortier Peter (1661 - 1711) Amsterdam
Artist: Mortier Peter ( - 1711) Amsterdam; issued in: Paris; date: ca 1693. - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 60 x 80; - description: Map shows the total East Sea with the coasts of Sweden, Finnland, Russia, Estland, Lettland,Lithuania and Poland - vita of the artist: Pieter Mortier (1661?1711) was an 18th-century mapmaker and engraver from the Northern Netherlands. Mortier had a partnership with Johannes Covens I (1697-1774) and founded the map publishing company Covens & Mortier (1721-1866). Mortier, being French himself, had easy access to French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. Consequently, much of Mortier's business was built upon leveraging the sophisticated Dutch printing establishment to issue embellished high quality editions of previously contemporary French maps. In the greater context of global cartography, this was a significant advantage as most Dutch map publishes had, at this point, fallen into the miasma of reprinting their own outdated works. By contrast, the cartographers of France were producing the most accurate and up to date charts anywhere. Mortier's cartographic work culminated in the magnificent nautical atlas, Le Neptune Francois. Upon Pierre's death in 1711 this business was inherited by his widow. In 1721 his son Cornelius Mortier took over the day to day operation of the firm. Cornelius partnered with his brother-in-law Jean Covens to form one of history's great cartographic partnerships - Covens and Mortier - which continued to publish maps and atl … [Click Below for Full Description]

NANTEUIL, Robert [1623 or 1630-1678].
1661. First State (of 2). Arthur Hind refers to Nanteuil as "the master of pure engraving" and "the undisputed head of the French school of portraiture". "At its best his work possesses a noble directness of expression and a complete freedom from all the attractive mannerisms by which a spurious reputation is so lightly gained." (Hind, A History of Engraving and Etching, p. 144) This print was made two years after Nanteuil's appointment as portrait engraver to Louis XIV. It was largely due to Nanteuil's influence that the King granted the edict of 1660 by which engraving was pronounced free and distinct from the mechanical arts, and engravers were declared to be entitled to the privileges of other artists. Nanteuil engraved portraits of many distinguished personages, including the King, Cardinal Richelieu and Queen Christina of Sweden. Le Tellier became Secretary of State for War in 1643 and Chancellor of France in 1677. He played a major role in transforming the French army into a much larger and more professional force dependent on the King, and helped draft the revocation of the Edict of Nantes which had granted a large measure of religious freedom to Protestants. The previous owner paid $1800 US plus premium at auction in 2000. Pettijean & Wickert 64. copper engraving. 334 x 254 mm. (sheet). signed in the plate. A good dark impression on laid paper with coat of arms watermark, trimmed at or just outside plate mark. (slight thin spots in left edge, mounting tape on verso). BÖCKLER, Georg Andreas.
Nuremberg: Christoff Gerhard for Paul Fürst, 1661. First edition. First edition, an exceptionally fine copy in an untouched contemporary binding, of this superbly illustrated work with 154 plates of various types of powered mills and hydraulic machinery. "Here is another of the great 'machine' books with many beautiful engravings of gunpowder mills, saw mills, water raising devices, fire engines, roasting spits and so on. Böckler was a German architect and engineer interested in masses of gearing, complex workings, and devices that even by modern standards invite awe and admiration" (Hoover). The magnificent plates are of various types of motion drives powered by intricate systems of wheels employing water, wind, weights, horse power, human muscle, or some striking combinations of these. Plates 73 and 74 depict paper-making equipment and processes, which are "the clearest delineation of the art to this date" (Hunter, The Literature of Papermaking, page 18): they show the linen rags being pulped with water-powered hammers, while the vatman stands ready with a mould, the coucher presses the post, and the drying sheets hang on ropes above, ready to be sized, calendared, gathered into reams, and packaged. Plate 5 pictures a hand mill for making ink for copperplate printing. The last plate (no. 154) is extraordinary for its depiction of a fire engine water pump made by the Nuremberg inventor Hans Hautsch in 1658. The suction-and-force mechanism of Hautsch's clever device (described on pp. 60-1 of Böckler's text) enabled twenty-four men to raise water to a height of eighty to one … [Click Below for Full Description]
