[Click Below for Full Description]

Astrology ] GADBURY, John.
Printed for William Miller at the Gilded Acorn near the little north-door in St Pauls Church-yard, London, 1661. Hardcover. Folio. (10.5 x 7.5 inches). [ii - frontispiece] [18], 276, [2], 38, [4], p. 41, [2], 42-294, [10]pp., Contemporary leather boards, neatly rebacked and retipped, with contemporary style plain spine with raised bands and original (?) gilt title label laid down. With frontispiece portrait (plate) of the author. Diagrams. Table of Contents at rear. Arguably the most important work by John Gadbury (1627-1704), who along with his erstwhile teacher, William Lilly, and Gadbury's own student, John Partridge, was one of the most famous English astrologers of the seventeenth century. Gadbury first published "Genethlialogia, or, The Doctrine of Nativities," a general treatise on natal astrology, in 1658, and reissued it twice; in 1660 and 1661 respectively. As far as we can determine the same set of sheets were used for all three issues: the author simply replaced the title-page. In three main sections: "The Doctrine of Nativities"; "Primum mobile: or, Astrological tables" and "The Doctrine of Horary Questions." The first word of the main title-page [Genethlialogi'a] in Greek letters. The section "Primum mobile: or, Astrological tables" has a separate title-page, with imprint "printed by J. C. for William Larnar and Daniel White. MDCLVIII. [1658]", and pagination, the register is continuous. Each set of tables of "Primum mobile" has a divisional title-page. Alciatus, Andreas
Padova: Pauli Frambotti, 1661. 4to, pp. lxxx, 1001, [1]; title page with printer's woodcut device, large woodcut printer's device on the verso of the final leaf; text in double column; added copper-engraved title page by J. Ruphon and 212 half-page woodcut emblems throughout; contemporary full vellum, unadorned; slight blue streaks along spine; very good and clean. One of the best critical editions, and the most complete edition, including the scatological emblem lxxx (sometimes deleted) which illustrates a woman defecating. "211 woodcuts of emblems from the same blocks as from the Paduan 1618 edition, now within borders, and one new "offensive" emblem, i.e. no. lxxx" (Landwehr). The first edition of Alciato's emblems, "and indeed the first printed work to be identified as an emblem book ... cannot be underestimated. The influence of Alciato's emblems is enormous and, since they first appeared in Latin, extends over the whole of Europe. By the 1620s, over a hundred more editions of Alciato's emblems would be printed, not only in Latin but in French, German, Italian and Spanish, and many of the emblems appear in English in Geffrey Whitney's Choice of Emblems (1586). Alciato's emblems set the pattern commonly, though not universally associated with the emblem, that is a motto or inscriptio, a picture (pictura) and a verse text or epigram (the subscriptio). The corpus would eventually stretch to 212 emblems, but early editions had a little over a hundred" (Glasgow University). This is the most complete edition. È venerato come santo dalla Chiesa cattolica. "Etching with drypoint, 1661 circa, signed at lower right. Example of the second state of two. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with ""encircled fluer-de-lys"" watermark, wide margins, perfect conditions. Tuttavia, poiché entrambi i nomi ricorrono nei registri notarili, in relazione ad un impiego presso Johannes Janssonius van Waesbergen, si può supporre che Jan e Johannes siano la stessa persona. First edition. Kiev, 1661. 314 leaves, 1 engraved title page, 2 plans of the caves as well as 49 woodcuts of Lavra saints. 31x18 cm. The first Old Slavonic edition of arguably the most important book printed in Ukraine in the 17th century. Complete with the folding plans of the monastery caves. The folding plans in the first edition are almost always lacking. The second edition that came out in 1678 had the plans as well, the second edition comes with plans in 30% of the times, while the first almost never. Sophisticated copy: all the woodcuts in the book are contemporary coloured which usually indicates the presence of the copy in the important collection. The colouring itself is a work of art, giving the new perspective to the classical images. Condition: late 18th cent. maroon binding, recent restoration of the spine and the back cover. Parts of the pages are in manuscript (added in XVIII century), including parts of the title page, the plans and one leaf of the index at the back of the book. Provenance: coming from the library of I.K. Laptev (book plate, 19th cent.), before that it has been in Belgorod region, according to the inscription by Fyodor Ivanovich Vavilov, that is done through several leaves of the book. The book is the chronicle of one of the first Christian monasteries in Kiev Rus'. Kiev Pechersk Lavra that was found in 1051 has been a cave monastery and the centre of the spiritual life of the Eastern European Christianity. Florence was a centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of that era. It is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, and has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages. A turbulent political history includes periods of rule by the powerful Medici family and numerous religious and republican revolutions. From 1865 to 1871 the city was the capital of the recently established.; - vita of the artist: Pieter Mortier (1661?1711) was an 18th-century mapmaker and engraver from the Northern Netherlands. Mortier had a partnership with Johannes Covens I (1697-1774) and founded the map publishing company Covens & Mortier (1721-1866). Mortier, being French himself, had easy access to French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. Consequently, much of Mortier's business was built upon leveraging the sophisticated Dutch printing establishment to issue embellished high quality editions of previously contemporary French maps. In the greater context of global cartography, this was a significant advantage as most Dutch map publishes had, at this point, fallen into the miasma of reprinting their own outdated works. By contrast, the cartographers of France were producing the … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOON, Jan van.
Amsterdam, 1661. Original wash colour. 430 x 540mm. Repairs at top margin, with small nick in bottom edge. A 17th century sea chart of the British Isles and the English Channel, orientated with north to the right. The east coasts of England and Scotland are covered by the title cartouche and four inset details; van Loon regarded them as superfluous as they are shown on his chart of the North Sea. The four insets, depicted as tromp l'oeil sheets pinned on a wall, are: the Seine estuary; Poole Harbour, the Solent and Isle of Wight; the Cornish coast from the Lizard to Plymouth; and the Thames from Sheppey to London. ROGERS, George.
London printed for J. Cadwel, 1661. Very proper for these times, when men are butting, and pushing, and goring, and horning one another. Also an appendix concerning women and jealousie. FIRST EDITION 1661, small 8vo, approximately 165 x 100 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, LACKING FRONTISPIECE, SUPPLIED IN MODERN FACSIMILE, plus a blank leaf at beginning and end, and the leaf following the title page, Dedication? pages: (12), 1-84, (2) - imprimatur leaf, signatures: *1-*8 (-*1 & *3), A-E8, F4 (-F4), catchword on *7v is a printer's error, pagination irregular but text collated and guaranteed complete, bound in modern full calf, blind ruled border and decorative panelling to covers, raised bands and blind rules to spine, gilt lettered red morocco label, new endpapers. 2 lines written in Latin on colophon page, occasional minor mark to text or margins. A good copy with facsimile frontispiece as noted. ESTC R209943, Wing attributes authorship to George Rogers (1618-1697) a medical man who trained in Padua and then went into practice in London, eventually becoming the president of the College of Physicians. However in ODNB this is not listed amongst his works. In the Preface to this serio-comic work, published to coincide with celebrations for the restoration of the monarchy (and in an act of remarkable prescience about what would notoriously prove to be one of the major preoccupations of that new anti-puritan era), seeing the general verge of the people to merryment , the author expresses the hope that this piece of drollery on the subject of cuckoldry might prove acceptable to his readers. … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
