Sir Robert Dudley
Florence 1661 - Map of the Argentinian coast from Sir Robert Dudley's Arcano del Mare (Florence: 1661). Show's Buenos Aries or "Aqua Buona." Copperplate engraving, sheet size 21 x 16 1/4 inches, excellent condition. Robert Dudley's splendid Dell' Arcano del Mare (Secrets of the Sea), is the first marine atlas to employ the Mercator projection. In using the projection developed by Mercator, Dudley improved upon the theory of navigating by the “Great Circle,” the shortest distance between two points on a globe. It would be the eighteenth century before cartographers used the projection consistently, and during the great Dutch period of cartography not one atlas was produced using it. Although Dell’ Arcano del Mare was published in Italy, it is considered the first printed English nautical atlas. Dudley’s monumental work was the only exception to the total dominance of sea atlas production by the Dutch for nearly a century. Arguably the most sumptuous marine atlas ever produced, it contained no less than 146 sea charts, and dozens of illustrations and working diagrams. It was superior to any previous work in that the charts illustrated the whole world, the first time any outside of Europe had been included. Dell’ Arcano del Mare was also the first atlas to show the prevailing winds, currents and magnetic deviation. One of the great marine atlases of all time, the work was magnificently engraved, an encyclopedia of 17th-century knowledge regarding the seas. Robert Dudley was one of the more colorful characters in the history of mapmaking. He was the ill … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHARLETON, Walter.
Londini: Apud. Tho. Newcomb, 1661. FIRST EDITION. "Among Charleton's best-known achievements was his introduction of Gassendian atomism to seventeenth-century England. The present work is a hypothetical discussion of the causes of diseases (i.e. hatred as the cause of leprosy); it also deals with the problem of abnormal embryonic development, which Charleton attempted to explain in terms of atomism, vitalism and Harvey's theory of epigenesis" (Norman). Wing C3673. Norman Catalogue 460. This is one of Charleton's rarer works, and was not in the collection formed by Dr. Garth Huston and offered for sale by Jeremy Norman & Co in 1989. This copy is the first issue, with only Thomas Newcomb's name in the imprint, and the date on the title-page misprinted and actually reading 2061.4to, pp. (xxiv), 208. Half-title. Contemporary mottled sheep, sometime rebacked, spine gilt but surface rubbed and chipped in places. Paper somewhat browned but still crisp.

Palafox y Mendoza, Juan De
Diego Dormer, a costa de Pedro Alfay, Mercader de libros., Zaragoza 1661 - 20 h. y 219pp. y vuelta. Muy correcto ejemplar, aún papel algo oscurecido, encuadernado en el s. XIX a media piel. Size: 20 x 15 Cm. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Paris: Chez Charles de Sercy et Jean Guignard, 1661. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of this rare garden treatise published during the time of Molière. This is the only known work by the Abbé Gobelin (the name may have been used pseudonymously). The publishers, Charles de Sercy and Jean Guignard, are known to have issued works by Molière himself. The present work features a dedication by the printers to "Monseigneur le Procureur General, Ministre d'Estat, & Sur-Intendant des Finances." This was none other than Nicolas Fouquet (1615-1680), one of Mazarin's most loyal and wealthiest supporters (Fouquet's wealth even surpassed the Cardinal's). In late 1661, Louis XIV had Fouquet arrested on false charges; the trial lasted three years, and Fouquet spent the rest of his life imprisoned in the fortress of Pignerol. It would appear that Fouquet's fall from grace did nothing to improve the sales, and subsequent survival, of this little gardening book. Features practical gardening and husbandry as was then known, including movement of the sun, remedies against the snails, caterpillars, wasps and ants, the means of harvesting fruit, the planting of the hedges and bu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Matthaus Merian
Frankfurt 1661 - Mathias Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the “Great Voyages”. Born and trained in Basel, Switzerland in the early 1600’s he began studying drawing, engraving and etching in Zurich with engraver Friedrich Meyer. Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry’s daughter Maria Magdalena. Merian gained his greatest acclaim as head of the family publishing house following the death of his father-in-law in 1623. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils, among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons Matthaus and Casper. “Topographia Galliae” was published from 1655 to 1661 in partnership with Martin Zeiller who wrote the text. “Topographia Galliae” was one of the largest and most comprehensive publishing’s of the Gaul region of its time with engravings of major European cities and historically important locations, each expertly engraved by Merian and his sons. In total, “Topographia Galliae” is comprised of 13 parts in four volumes, with nine engraved additional tit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: late 18th century. This superb hand-colored engraving, Plate 82, Vue de vieux Chateau de St. Germain en Laye, from the late 18th century measures 19.75” x 26.75” and is in mint condition. Illustrated in this engraving is a view of the entrance to Chateau St. Germain in Laye, a northern suburb in France. The chateau was the birth site of King Louis XIV and his principal residence from 1661 to 1681. This engraving shows many colorfully dressed noblemen and women in the grounds surrounding the chateau, all lively and interacting. Using perspective to create a dynamic engraving, the artist creates visual planes in an attempt to make the scene more three dimensional and similar one's own vision. During the mid to late 18th century, the trend amongst European artists, printmakers and publishers, was to visually record their own country's architectural treasures, and the natural beauty of their gardens. Motivated by national pride, artists and printmakers began to publish views of their most-admired estates and grounds. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside, they were meant to encourage public recognition of national treasures. These prints were meant to be purchased by the English and foreign tourists whom desired a memento of their travels. Louis XIV (1638-1715), the Sun King of France, had grown up during a civil war between rival factions of aristocrats, known as the Fronde, and wanted a site where he could control the French government by absolute rule. Louis settled on the royal hunting lodge at Versailles , which had been acquired by Louis XIII in 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]
