Matthaus Merian
Frankfurt 1661 - Mathias Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the “Great Voyages”. Born and trained in Basel, Switzerland in the early 1600’s he began studying drawing, engraving and etching in Zurich with engraver Friedrich Meyer. Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry’s daughter Maria Magdalena. Merian gained his greatest acclaim as head of the family publishing house following the death of his father-in-law in 1623. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils, among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons Matthaus and Casper. “Topographia Galliae” was published from 1655 to 1661 in partnership with Martin Zeiller who wrote the text. “Topographia Galliae” was one of the largest and most comprehensive publishing’s of the Gaul region of its time with engravings of major European cities and historically important locations, each expertly engraved by Merian and his sons. In total, “Topographia Galliae” is comprised of 13 parts in four volumes, with nine engraved additional tit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: late 18th century. This superb hand-colored engraving, Plate 82, Vue de vieux Chateau de St. Germain en Laye, from the late 18th century measures 19.75” x 26.75” and is in mint condition. Illustrated in this engraving is a view of the entrance to Chateau St. Germain in Laye, a northern suburb in France. The chateau was the birth site of King Louis XIV and his principal residence from 1661 to 1681. This engraving shows many colorfully dressed noblemen and women in the grounds surrounding the chateau, all lively and interacting. Using perspective to create a dynamic engraving, the artist creates visual planes in an attempt to make the scene more three dimensional and similar one's own vision. During the mid to late 18th century, the trend amongst European artists, printmakers and publishers, was to visually record their own country's architectural treasures, and the natural beauty of their gardens. Motivated by national pride, artists and printmakers began to publish views of their most-admired estates and grounds. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside, they were meant to encourage public recognition of national treasures. These prints were meant to be purchased by the English and foreign tourists whom desired a memento of their travels. Louis XIV (1638-1715), the Sun King of France, had grown up during a civil war between rival factions of aristocrats, known as the Fronde, and wanted a site where he could control the French government by absolute rule. Louis settled on the royal hunting lodge at Versailles , which had been acquired by Louis XIII in 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Madrid, 1661. Hardcover. Good. Hardcover. Uncommon early Spanish law book originally printed in 1631. The book is a review and practice for scribes, early officials of the courts, written by the Camara scriviner of "His Majesty." Bound in later marbled boards with leather spine. Gilt partial title and decorations to spine separated by gilt lines. Front and back boards somewhat bowed. Front hinge has pulled away from the text block but the rear board and the interior pages are tight. Inner pages show browning and spotting, some pages more than others, not affecting the legibility of the text or the shoulder notes. Top page edges have been trimmed to fit binding. Some have been cut very close to the text, but it does not appear that any of the text is missing except for loss of chapter headers and the first word of the title page. .Two pages near rear have been torn in the margin along the fore edges, one of which intrudes very slightly into the text. There are also tears to the top fore edge margins of the indices at the end, again not affecting the readibility. Bookplate of noted Baltimore book collector Alfred J. Quite scarce contemporary publication of Osio's simplified method for the construction of the orders of architecture through angles alone, without arithmetic divisions and without modules. Della Bella, Stefano
Della Bella, Stefano. [Entree du Prince di Toscane, Representant Hercul]. Etching, 1661. The first of three etchings from the festival book Il mondo festeggiante: balletto a cavallo, fatto nel teatro congiunto al palazzo del sereniss. gran duca, per le reali nozze de' serenissimi principi Cosimo Terzo di Toscana, e Margherita Luisa d'Orleans. In Firenze: Nella Stamperia di S.A.S., 1661. (Etching on paper 17 1/8 x 9 1/16", with margins. Mounted on laid paper. An excellent impression, in very good and clean condition, with slight chipping and some minor repairs). By Stefano della Bella after G.A. Moniglia. The most arresting of the three Della Bella etchings taken from the festival book Il mondo festiggiante (1661), which describes the marriage festival, entries and equestrian ballets composed in honor of the marriage of Cosimo II Grand Duke of Tuscany to Margherita Luisa d'Orleans, June 1661. This plate pictures a backdrop constructed for the huge half-oval behind the Pitti Palace. A circle of obelisks is placed at the center. Groups of decorated coaches are surrounded by foot soldiers and a circle of riders. Atlas with the heavens on his shoulders is most visible in the center of the etchings, having come to tell those on earth that Hercules, along with the sun god Apollo and the goddess of the moon Diana, has descended from heaven to attend these nuptials. [Great Britain]:
[London: John Bill and Christopher Barker, 1661].. 4,[1] leaves. Printed on five separate oblong folio sheets, mounted on stiff card. Minor dust soiling, with the ex-lib. mark of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana. Good. This proclamation orders a halt to the exportation of gold and silver in response to a lack of both in circulation throughout the British empire. This paucity of hard coin is attributed to the widespread practice of buying up gold and silver at inflated prices with the specific design of exporting it to foreign countries. The proclamation makes it clear that the law also extends to the activities of British merchants acting abroad. This law was enacted contemporaneously with the infamous navigation acts which began in 1660 and limited the trade of the colonies to Great Britain exclusively. The present law would have been a similar blow to the colonies by prohibiting the exportation of British currency to other nations, thus serving as a further restriction on their trade. Extremely rare. OCLC locates only one copy, at the Guildhall Library. WING C3214. STEELE 3309-10. GOLDSMITHS 1610. OCLC 25470423.

TINNEY, John (d. 1761) after Anthony HIGHMORE (1719-1799)
London: Robert Sayer and John Bowles & Son, [no date]. Hand-coloured engraving, printed on laid paper backed with a 20th-century archival sheet. Very good condition apart from some light soiling and a 5/8" tear along the bottom edge of a larger skillfully repaired tear that runs through the right side of the image and spans the height of the sheet. A very fine image of Kensington Palace and its expansive grounds. Erected in 1661 for the Earl of Nottingham, Kensington Palace became the royal residence of William III in 1689. Over the years, it underwent various renovations by architects such as Nicholas Hawksmoor and Sir Christopher Wren. The palace was surrounded by an extensive park, the vast grounds of which are pictured here, that was expanded and laid out by the celebrated garden designers Henry Wise and Charles Bridgeman. Visible on the far left side of this beautiful print is one of the formal tree-lined avenues that were characteristic of the park. John Tinney was both an engraver and "a print seller, and carried on business at the Golden Lion in Fleet Street, London, where all his own works were published.
