CAMPEN, Jacob Van
Amsterdam,: Dancker Danckerts,, 1661.. Folio, with an engraved title-page, a full-page portrait of Campen and 30 engraved plates, mostly double-page, one folding; small marginal tear to one plate well clear of image; contemporary vellum with the arms of Stirling Maxwell stamped in blind on the upper boards (there is also a later family member's bookplate); covers rather soiled, small chip at the foot of darkened spine, but rather an attractive copy nonetheless. Oddly enough, this splendid architectural record of the Amsterdam Town Hall is also one of very few early printed records of Tasman's voyages.Jacob Van Campen began his designs for his masterpiece in 1648: the Town Hall was finally completed in 1665, ten years after Van Campen's death. His draughtsman, Jacob Vennekool, made the drawings for this book, which were engraved by Dankerts. They include exterior and interior elevations, sections and plans. There is also a magnificent anonymous portrait of Van Campen himself. The building was itself an emblem of the great commercial successes of the Dutch, successes that are specifically celebrated in the rich sculptural decorations. The main pediment, for example, shows the oceans and continents of the world paying tribute to Amsterdam.Tasman's voyages had been completed in 1644, and two of the engraved plates - a double-page engraving followed by a single-page - depict the wide marble floor of the Burgerzaal, the main room of the Town Hall. This floor, essentially the centre-piece of the whole building, contained the famous marble Tasman map, a world map in two spheres (wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAYER, Johann
Ulm: Johann Gorlini,, 1661. omnium asterismorum continens schemata, nova methodo delineata, aereis laminis expressa. Folio (327 × 230 mm). Contemporary vellum over stiff boards, dark green morocco spine label at head. Engraved title, 51 double-page plates of the constellations mounted on stubs. Ownership inscription of G. Witchell to front pastedown. Spine neatly repaired at head, some marginal browning, overall a very good copy. Bayer's was the first star atlas based on Tycho Brahe's Astronomiae instauratae mechanica, and the first astronomical work to be conceived as a true atlas, namely a collection of maps rather than symbolic pictures. Bayer's atlas added 12 new constellations, in the southern sky, to the 48 of Ptolemy. Another major innovation, although partially anticipated by Piccolomini a few years early, was Bayer's assignment of a Greek letter to each star in order of magnitude. The Bayer designation identifies a specific star by a Greek letter, followed by the genitive form of its parent constellation's Latin name, e.g. Alpha Centauri. This brightness-based nomenclature gained general acceptance after the publication of this edition and is still in use today. The engraved title-page shows the title flanked by the figure of Atlas and Hercules, incorporating a view of Augsburg where the book had first been published in 1605. With the ownership inscription of the English mathematician George Witchell ((1728–1785), dated 29 May 1781, and a few minor notations in his hand. Witchell published a map of the passage of the moon's shadow over … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giuseppe (Gioseffo) Flavio
Venetia, Appresso li Milochi, 1661. 1661 In 8°, pagg. (16), 268; 264; (1), 332 con testalini e capilettera xilografici, legatura in piena pergamena floscia coeva, titoli manoscritti al dorso. Con copiosi indici all'inizio del volume. Flavio Giuseppe (Gerusalemme, 37 d. [Click Below for Full Description]

Blount, Thomas
London: Thomas Newcombe for George Sawbridge, 1661.. Second Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. Second edition "more correct ... five hundred words are added." Uncommon in any edition. Binding looks early 19th c. The leather on spine cracked to bottom half and split along front hinge but book still holding firm. Heavy wear to top of spine. Wear to corners and extremities. Internally hinges solid and pages are clean. Errata leaf at end. The biggest flaw is that there is a sizeable chunk missing from the title page (see illustrations) which is why the price is as it is... a shame as otherwise pages are clean and the book is solid. Nothing before the title (A1) but otherwise complete.Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel.

Contrary to legend, the demonstration was performed with a team of horses for the first time in Magdeburg in 1657 (not Regensburg in 1654) and repeated at court in Berlin in 1663. This edition not in BL online catalogue. Andrea Alciato's Emblematum liber or Book of Emblems had enormous influence and popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is a collection of 212 Latin emblem poems, each consisting of a motto (a proverb or other short enigmatic expression), a picture, and an epigrammatic text. Alciato's book was first published in 1531, and was expanded in various editions during the author's lifetime. It began a craze for emblem poetry that lasted for several centuries. Andreas Alciat was born on May 8, 1492 in Milan or nearby Alzate, the son of a prosperous merchant. He was a successful lawyer and university professor and lived at various times in Milan, Bologna, Avignon, and Paris. He died on January 12, 1550. Alciat's Liber Emblemata was the first of many emblem books that were the literary vogue in the 16th century. At this time interest in the newly rediscoved Egyptian hieroglyphics ran high among the educated and the emblem books were, in part, an attempt to de … [Click Below for Full Description]

Matthaus Merian
Frankfurt 1661 - Mathias Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the “Great Voyages”. Born and trained in Basel, Switzerland in the early 1600’s he began studying drawing, engraving and etching in Zurich with engraver Friedrich Meyer. Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry’s daughter Maria Magdalena. Merian gained his greatest acclaim as head of the family publishing house following the death of his father-in-law in 1623. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils, among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons Matthaus and Casper. “Topographia Galliae” was published from 1655 to 1661 in partnership with Martin Zeiller who wrote the text. “Topographia Galliae” was one of the largest and most comprehensive publishing’s of the Gaul region of its time with engravings of major European cities and historically important locations, each expertly engraved by Merian and his sons. In total, “Topographia Galliae” is comprised of 13 parts in four volumes, with nine engraved additional tit … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Eliot, John]: [Brigham, Clarence]:
[Cambridge, Ma.: Samuel Green & Marmaduke Johnson, 1661-1663].. Two leaves, plus two single-page letters. Leaves lightly dampstained, a few small edge tears with older repairs. About very good. Letters near fine. Two conjugate leaves from the famed "Eliot Indian Bible," the first Bible printed in any language in the American colonies and one of the most important issues of the 17th-century colonial press. Together here with related correspondence explaining their provenance. "Not the least of the many features of interest which concentrates in this volume, are the statements of undoubted authorities, that Eliot was engaged for ten years in its translation; that it was the first Bible printed in America; that a large portion of the composition in the printing of the second edition at least, was performed by Indian James; and that the work was three years in passing through the press" - Field. "Supported by the London-based Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, Eliot began a phonetic translation of the Scriptures into Natick, which had previously not had a written form. The Corporation supplied a printing press for the work, as well as a new set of metal type to print the text. The type font required extra samples of the letters "k" and "q," as well as a totally new character that Eliot devised for a particular Natick pronunciation" - Siebert. Not only does this work stand alone as a monolith of early American printing, but it offers a link to the very first issue of the Cambridge press, the Bay Psalm Book. The present printer, Samuel Green, apprenticed with Stephen Daye … [Click Below for Full Description]

VALERIO, Luca
Woodcut printer's device on title & numerous woodcut diagrams in the text. 4 p.l., 260 pp. 4to, cont. limp boards (a little soiled, unimportant marginal dampstaining). Bologna: Heirs of Ducci, 1661. Second edition, combining the De Centro Gravitatis Solidorum and the Quadratura parabola; this edition contains important authorial additions and corrections. These two texts had a considerable influence on Galileo and his studies on motion. Valerio (1552-1618), who had studied under Clavius, met Galileo in Pisa in 1590 and influenced him to renew his studies on the centers of gravity. In 1609 they began an extensive correspondence on problems of motion and mathematics. It was during this time that Galileo was preparing his treatise on motion and mechanics which later became the Discorsi of 1638. "In December 1612, having completed his Sunspot Letters, Galileo considered having the Linceans print his work on centers of gravity of paraboloids, probably in the form of a letter to Luca Valerio. Ensuing correspondence shows that he sent this to Cesi, who in discussing the matter with Valerio found that he was then revising his own book on a similar subject, published in 1603-4. Galileo accordingly gracefully withdrew his work from publication at this time, for which Valerio expressed his gratitude. In fact Valerio did not reprint his book, and Galileo eventually placed his investigations of centers of gravity in an appendix to his own last book in 1638."Drake, Galileo at Work, p. 202. Valerio's influence on Galileo, through his correspondence and these two books, was enorm … [Click Below for Full Description]
