Arnold Montanus, Jacob Meurs
1661. Map of Japan made by Arnoldus Montanus. The top map shows the details of the rout from Osaka to Jedo (Tokyo). The bottom map shows the details of the route from Nagasaki to Osaka. Both maps are provided with (title)cartouches and a compass rose. A nice detail is the name 'La Mer de Corée. De Coreer Zee'. The name of this sea is still controversial. The sea is better known as the Sea of Japan. The Sea of Korea is rarely used on maps in the seventeenth century. At most four, five maps use this name, including this map of Montanus.

The book is a copy of the first edition in Church Slavonic of a collection of short stories about the foundation of the Kiev Pechersk Monastery (the first known monastery of Ancient Russia, the life of its first inhabitants), known in the manuscript tradition as the "Kiev Pechersk Paterik". The initiator of the publication was the archimandrite of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra Innocent (Gisel). Of exceptional historical, archaeological and everyday interest are illustrations on the pages of the paterik, made in the technique of woodcutting by the monk of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra Elijah in 1655-1660. For all the imperfection of the engraving technique of that time, there is a lot of history, archeology and life of the Pechersk monastery in the second half of the 17th century. recorded in these figures. GROSS, Johann Georg; TONJOLA, Johannes
Basileae: Typis & impensis Emanuelis König & fil, 1661. 1661 Basel Dance of Death Occult Grave Epitaphs Esoteric Gross & Tonjola RAREThroughout 16th-century Europe, there was an ever-growing desire to learn more about death and the afterlife. Authors and book illustrators would capture the attention of readers with stories of demons, skeletons, and the macabre, but few did it better than Huldrich Frölich. He was one of the first Basel authors to publish a book on the 'Dance of Death', a book that was well-illustrated and highly desirable. Authors such as Johann Georg Gross and Johannes Tonjola followed suit, using much of Frölich's original work in his book 'Urbis Basil Epitaphia et Inscriptiones'. Gross's 17th-century book describes the author's interaction with an imaginary satyr, to whom he shows the city of Basel's crypts, sepulchers, tombs, and graves, reiterating the epitaphs found on them.Tonjola continued adding to the work once Gross died - and even though the two are thought to have not contributed their own work, the book on Basel's 'Dance of Death' has remained popular even into the 21st-century.Item number: #8842 Price: $599GROSS, Johann Georg; TONJOLA, Johannes Basilea sepulta retecta continuata. "Etching with drypoint, 1661 circa, signed at lower right. Example of the second state of two. Salvator ROSA (Napoli 1615 - Roma 1673)
Acquaforte e puntasecca, circa 1661, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. "Etching with drypoint, 1661 circa, signed at lower right. Example of the second state of two. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with ""encircled fluer-de-lys"" watermark, wide margins, perfect conditions. St. William of Maleval, also known as William of Aquitaine, was a hermit, contemplative, whose teachings, collected by his disciple Alberto who lived with him his last year of life, and in Consuetudines Regula sancti Guillelmi, gave rise to 'order of St. William. It is revered as a saint by the Catholic Church. A great example." Bartsch 1; Thodoli 99; Salamon 85.

STOKRAM, Andries.
Knuttel 8758; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 418 note; Nieuwenhuys, Mirror of the Indies, pp. 14-15; STCN (4 copies). One of four editions, all published in the same year and all very rare, of a popular eye-witness account of a ship wrecked in the Indian Ocean, in the vicinity of Mauritius. Andries Stokram tells the colourful story of how a fleet of seven East Indiamen on their way back from Batavia got caught in a terrible storm. Four ships sank, only the crew of the Aernhem managing to get away in an open boat. After a week without food they managed to reach Mauritius. "When they were finally taken on board a Dutch privateer, Stokram had been living for eight months the way Robinson Crusoe would a century later, in an environment Daniel Defoe knew from descriptions such as Stokram's" (Nieuwenhuys). Stokram was put a shore on St. Helena and made his way to the Netherlands. Somewhat browned and the fore-edges restored (not touching the text), otherwise in good condition.

HEYDEN (HEIDEN), Frans Jansz. van der.
Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 422 note; STCN (1 copy); Tiele, Bibl. note; WorldCat (2 copies, incl. 1 the same). Extremely rare fifth edition, the second illustrated with woodcuts, of a popular account of the story of the East Indiaman Ter Schelling, which was wrecked off the coast of Bengal. The author, a member of the crew, kept a journal of his experiences, and the 18 woodcuts illustrate the crew's adventures both at sea and on land. The ship left Batavia with 85 men and about 28 canons under captain Jacob Jansz. Stroom on 3 September 1661 and came within sight of Bengal on 8 October. They wrecked on a sandbank off shore, however, and had to make rafts to travel further, 32 of them managing to reach an uninhabited island. Van der Heyden describes the crew's desperate hunger, when they were tempted even to eat a worm-filled human corpse. They survived on turtles, snakes, iguana and occasionally rotten buffalo meat. By chance they reached mainland Bengal in the middle of the region's greatest war (1660-1662), so once ashore they were conscripted into the enormous Mogul army to fight against the kingdom of Assam, said to be cannibals. The gruesome massacre of captives by the Nabob is described and illustrated. Following the story of the voyage are descriptions of the kingdoms of Arrakan, Martaban, Tanassery, Bengala and Patan along the coast of the Bay of Bengal from modern Bangladesh to Burma.Though all editions are rare, those with woodcut illustrations aimed at a lower market seems to be the rarest.Slightly browned throughout, a minor dampstain in the inner margin of the fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Japan: Unknown, 1661. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An interesting Edo and Meiji woodblock-print of 'Collection of Ancient Signatures.' The world of swords in the 17th century was marked by the publication of the treaties of the Muromachi period, as Kokon Meizukushi. These first printed should probably be enough for the curiosity of readers since, apart from a few exceptions, no new work appeared before the 18th century. The most important of these is the Shinkan hidenshô Novel 秘 伝 抄 (New Edition of the Secret Transmission Abstract), first published in 1661 (Manji 4) under the title Kokon meizukushi 古今 銘 盡 (Collection of Ancient Signatures ), in seven books, with some additions. This collection, which summarizes the accumulated knowledge of amateur warriors' blades and polishers throughout the Muromachi period was the subject of several editions under different titles in the 17th and 18th centuries. This rare 3 volume 1661 edition is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations throughout of different blades!

Basileae: Typis & impensis Emanuelis Konig & fil, 1661. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 1661 Basel Dance of Death Occult Grave Epitaphs Esoteric Gross & Tonjola RARE Throughout 16th-century Europe, there was an ever-growing desire to learn more about death and the afterlife. Gross's 17th-century book describes the author's interaction with an imaginary satyr, to whom he shows the city of Basel's crypts, sepulchers, tombs, and graves, reiterating the epitaphs found on them. Tonjola continued adding to the work once Gross died - and even though the two are thought to have not contributed their own work, the book on Basel's 'Dance of Death' has remained popular even into the 21st-century. Galilei, Galileo; Salusbury, Thomas
William Leybourn, London, 1661. First edition of Thomas Salusbury's Mathematical Collections and Translations. Salusbury compiled and translated important writings by Archimedes, Descartes, Galileo, Kepler, Tartaglia, Torricelli into English for the first time, greatly influencing the English-speaking world. This volume contains the first English translation of Galileo's 1632 The Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems (Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo). Also included is Galileo's 1615 letter to the Grand Duchess Christina of Tuscany, published in 1636 as Nov-antiqua sanctissimorum patrum et probatorum theologorum doctrina, which asserted the independence of science from religious authority. This short but important Epistle to the Grand Dutchesse Mother concerning the Authority of Holy Scripture in Philosophical Controversies (known today as the Letter to Christina), was only the second work of Galileo's to be published in England. It preceded the Latin edition, published in London by Thomas Dicas, by two years and remained the only vernacular translation for two centuries. Apart from the two works by Galileo, Salusbury included other translations from Italian and Latin in this volume of his Collections, such as Johannes Kepler's and Didacus a Stunica's "Reconcilings of Scripture Texts," and Foscarinus' Epistle to Father Fantonus reconciling the Authority of Scripture. Folio, bound in full calf, with 4 engraved plates. Lacking the half-title, contents leaf, fly-title to The System of the World, and the errata leaf found at the end of the first part in s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Unknown
Unknown. 1661 Japanese Handwritten Samurai Katana 3v Woodblock Print Ancient Signatures An interesting Edo and Meiji woodblock-print of ‘Collection of Ancient Signatures.’ The world of swords in the 17th century was marked by the publication of the treaties of the Muromachi period, as Kokon Meizukushi. These first printed should probably be enough for the curiosity of readers since, apart from a few exceptions, no new work appeared before the 18th century. The most important of these is the Shinkan hidenshô Novel (New Edition of the Secret Transmission Abstract), first published in 1661 (Manji 4) under the title Kokon meizukushi (Collection of Ancient Signatures ), in seven books, with some additions. This collection, which summarizes the accumulated knowledge of amateur warriors’ blades and polishers throughout the Muromachi period was the subject of several editions under different titles in the 17th and 18th centuries. This rare 3 volume 1661 edition is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations throughout of different blades! BERQUEN, Robert de.
[12], 112 pp.First edition, first issue, of a rare work on precious stones and pearls found in what the title calls the East and West Indies (but including the Gulf region), written by a Paris "marchand orphevre". It is most important for the author's new information on diamonds, pearls and pearl fishing, this last with considerable detail on the various pearl fishing sites in the Gulf. The book is dedicated to Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier and first cousin of Louis XIV. The extensive chapter devoted to pearls and pearl fishing notes the Persian Gulf as the most important source and names specific sites: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. Dans le Golfe Persique, principalement aux environs de l'Isle d'Ormus [= Hormuz] & Bassora [= Basra]: aupres de Baroyn [= Bahrain][,] Catiffa [= Qatif], Juffa [or Jafu?], Camaron [= Gamron/Bandar Abbas], & autres lieux de ce Golfe ..." (p. 74). "Very early, and important treatise on gemstones, gold & silver, ..." (Sinkankas). With marginal worm holes mostly at the head but slightly affecting the running head or first line of text in a few leaves, occasional marginal water stains, but otherwise in very good condition.
