Unknown
Unknown. 1661 Japanese Handwritten Samurai Katana 3v Woodblock Print Ancient Signatures An interesting Edo and Meiji woodblock-print of ‘Collection of Ancient Signatures.’ The world of swords in the 17th century was marked by the publication of the treaties of the Muromachi period, as Kokon Meizukushi. These first printed should probably be enough for the curiosity of readers since, apart from a few exceptions, no new work appeared before the 18th century. The most important of these is the Shinkan hidenshô Novel (New Edition of the Secret Transmission Abstract), first published in 1661 (Manji 4) under the title Kokon meizukushi (Collection of Ancient Signatures ), in seven books, with some additions. This collection, which summarizes the accumulated knowledge of amateur warriors’ blades and polishers throughout the Muromachi period was the subject of several editions under different titles in the 17th and 18th centuries. This rare 3 volume 1661 edition is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations throughout of different blades! BERQUEN, Robert de.
Alden & Landis 661/14 (7 copies, some possibly 2nd issue); GSabin 4957; Sinkankas 592 note. First edition, first issue, of a rare work on precious stones and pearls found in what the title calls the East and West Indies (but including the Gulf region), written by a Paris "marchand orphevre". It is most important for the author's new information on diamonds, pearls and pearl fishing, this last with considerable detail on the various pearl fishing sites in the Gulf. The book is dedicated to Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier and first cousin of Louis XIV. The extensive chapter devoted to pearls and pearl fishing notes the Persian Gulf as the most important source and names specific sites: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. Dans le Golfe Persique, principalement aux environs de l'Isle d'Ormus [= Hormuz] & Bassora [= Basra]: aupres de Baroyn [= Bahrain][,] Catiffa [= Qatif], Juffa [or Jafu?], Camaron [= Gamron/Bandar Abbas], & autres lieux de ce Golfe ..." (p. 74). "Very early, and important treatise on gemstones, gold & silver, ..." (Sinkankas). With marginal worm holes mostly at the head but slightly affecting the running head or first line of text in a few leaves, occasional marginal water stains, but otherwise in very good condition. Hinge slightly damaged, a few small worm holes and small tears in the spine and a few scrapes and scratches, but otherwise good. First edition of an important work on gems and pearls, especially interesting for pearl fishing in the Gulf, in an attractive French binding.

GROSS, Johann Georg; TONJOLA, Johannes
Typis & impensis Emanuelis Konig & fil. 1661 Basel Dance of Death Occult Grave Epitaphs Esoteric Gross & Tonjola RARE Throughout 16th-century Europe, there was an ever-growing desire to learn more about death and the afterlife. Authors and book illustrators would capture the attention of readers with stories of demons, skeletons, and the macabre, but few did it better than Huldrich Frölich. He was one of the first Basel authors to publish a book on the Dance of Death , a book that was well-illustrated and highly desirable. Authors such as Johann Georg Gross and Johannes Tonjola followed suit, using much of Frölich s original work in his book Urbis Basil Epitaphia et Inscriptiones . Gross s 17th-century book describes the author s interaction with an imaginary satyr, to whom he shows the city of Basel s crypts, sepulchers, tombs, and graves, reiterating the epitaphs found on them. Tonjola continued adding to the work once Gross died and even though the two are thought to have not contributed their own work, the book on Basel s Dance of Death has remained popular even into the 21st-century. Item number: #8842 Price: $599 GROSS, Johann Georg; TONJOLA, Johannes Basilea sepulta retecta continuata. [Click Below for Full Description]

Arguably the most important work by John Gadbury (1627-1704), who along with his erstwhile teacher, William Lilly, and Gadbury's own student, John Partridge, was one of the most famous English astrologers of the seventeenth century. Gadbury first published "Genethlialogia, or, The Doctrine of Nativities," a general treatise on natal astrology, in 1658, and reissued it twice; in 1660 and 1661 respectively. As far as we can determine the same set of sheets were used for all three issues: the author simply replaced the title-page. In three main sections: "The Doctrine of Nativities"; "Primum mobile: or, Astrological tables" and "The Doctrine of Horary Questions." The first word of the main title-page [Genethlialogi'a] in Greek letters. The section "Primum mobile: or, Astrological tables" has a separate title-page, with imprint "printed by J. C. for William Larnar and Daniel White. MDCLVIII. [1658]", and pagination, the register is continuous. Each set of tables of "Primum mobile" has a divisional title-page. Alciatus, Andreas
Padova: Pauli Frambotti, 1661. 4to, pp. lxxx, 1001, [1]; title page with printer's woodcut device, large woodcut printer's device on the verso of the final leaf; text in double column; added copper-engraved title page by J. Ruphon and 212 half-page woodcut emblems throughout; contemporary full vellum, unadorned; slight blue streaks along spine; very good and clean. One of the best critical editions, and the most complete edition, including the scatological emblem lxxx (sometimes deleted) which illustrates a woman defecating. "211 woodcuts of emblems from the same blocks as from the Paduan 1618 edition, now within borders, and one new "offensive" emblem, i.e. no. lxxx" (Landwehr). The first edition of Alciato's emblems, "and indeed the first printed work to be identified as an emblem book ... As such, its importance cannot be underestimated. The influence of Alciato's emblems is enormous and, since they first appeared in Latin, extends over the whole of Europe. By the 1620s, over a hundred more editions of Alciato's emblems would be printed, not only in Latin but in French, German, Italian and Spanish, and many of the emblems appear in English in Geffrey Whitney's Choice of Emblems (1586). Alciato's emblems set the pattern commonly, though not universally associated with the emblem, that is a motto or inscriptio, a picture (pictura) and a verse text or epigram (the subscriptio). The corpus would eventually stretch to 212 emblems, but early editions had a little over a hundred" (Glasgow University). This is the most complete edition. The folding plans in the first edition are almost always lacking. The second edition that came out in 1678 had the plans as well, the second edition comes with plans in 30% of the times, while the first almost never. Sophisticated copy: all the woodcuts in the book are contemporary coloured which usually indicates the presence of the copy in the important collection. The colouring itself is a work of art, giving the new perspective to the classical images. Condition: late 18th cent. maroon binding, recent restoration of the spine and the back cover. Parts of the pages are in manuscript (added in XVIII century), including parts of the title page, the plans and one leaf of the index at the back of the book. Provenance: coming from the library of I.K. Laptev (book plate, 19th cent.), before that it has been in Belgorod region, according to the inscription by Fyodor Ivanovich Vavilov, that is done through several leaves of the book. The book is the chronicle of one of the first Christian monasteries in Kiev Rus'. Kiev Pechersk Lavra that was found in 1051 has been a cave monastery and the centre of the spiritual life of the Eastern European Christianity. The story of the creation of this book has started in the 13th century, when Lavra monk Simon wrote the letter to his ward, Polikarp, i … [Click Below for Full Description]
