[Click Below for Full Description]

Mortier had a partnership with Johannes Covens I (1697-1774) and founded the map publishing company Covens & Mortier (1721-1866). Mortier, being French himself, had easy access to French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. Consequently, much of Mortier's business was built upon leveraging the sophisticated Dutch printing establishment to issue embellished high quality editions of previously contemporary French maps. In the greater context of global cartography, this was a significant advantage as most Dutch map publishes had, at this point, fallen into the miasma of reprinting their own outdated works. By contrast, the cartographers of France were producing the most accurate and up to date charts anywhere. Mortier's cartographic work culminated in the magnificent nautical atlas, Le Neptune Francois. Upon Pierre's death in 1711 this business was inherited by his widow. In 1721 his son Cornelius Mortier took over the day to day operation of the firm. Cornelius partnered with his brother-in-law Jean Covens to form one of history's great cartographic partnerships - Covens and Mortier - which continued to publish maps and atlases unt … [Click Below for Full Description]

"In 1657 his increasingly poor health led Digby to take the waters at Montpellier, where he gave his famous account of the 'powder of sympathy', which cured wounds by being rubbed on the weapon that inflicted them. It was a strong solution of vitriol (copper sulfate) in rainwater, which could be improved by drying in the sun and by mixture with gum tragacanth" (DSB IV, 95). "The discourse on the powder of sympathy, one of the most famous of Digby's productions" (Ferguson VI, 22), erschien zuerst 1658 in Paris (in französischer Sprache), dann im selben Jahr in London auf Englisch und hernach in der Übersetzung von H. Hupka auf Deutsch. - Papierbedingt durchgehend gebräunt. Ohne das gestochene Frontispiz (als Faksimile beiliegend). Alter hs. Besitzvermerk am Titel verso. VD 17, 3:625237G. BL (German books) D 459. London, printed for J. Cadwel, 1661. Very proper for these times, when men are butting, and pushing, and goring, and horning one another. Also an appendix concerning women and jealousie. FIRST EDITION 1661, small 8vo, approximately 165 x 100 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, LACKING FRONTISPIECE, SUPPLIED IN MODERN FACSIMILE, and lacking a blank leaf at beginning and end, and the leaf following the title page, most likely the Dedication, pages: (12), 1 - 84, (2) imprimatur leaf, signatures: *1 - *8 ( - *1, *3), A - E8, F4 ( - F4), catchword on *7v is a printer's mistake, pagination irregular but text collated and guaranteed complete, bound in modern full calf, blind ruled border and blind decorative panelling to covers, raised bands and blind rules to spine, gilt lettered red morocco label, new endpapers. 2 lines written in Latin at top of colophon page, occasional minor mark to text or margins. A good copy with facsimile frontispiece as noted. ESTC R209943 Wing attributes authorship to George Rogers (1618 - 1697) a medical man who trained in Padua and then went into practice in London, eventually becoming the president of the College of Physicians. However the ODNB does not list this amongst his works. In the Preface to this serio - comic work, published to coincide with the celebrations for the restoration of the monarchy (and in an act of remarkable prescience about what would notoriously prove to be one of the major preoccupations of that new anti - puritan era), seeing 'the general verge of the people to merryment', the author expresses the hope that 'this piece of drollery' on the s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Extremely rare fifth edition, the second illustrated with woodcuts, of a popular account of the story of the East Indiaman Ter Schelling, which was wrecked off the coast of Bengal. The author, a member of the crew, kept a journal of his experiences, and the 18 woodcuts illustrate the crew's adventures both at sea and on land. The ship left Batavia with 85 men and about 28 canons under captain Jacob Jansz. Stroom on 3 September 1661 and came within sight of Bengal on 8 October. They wrecked on a sandbank off shore, however, and had to make rafts to travel further, 32 of them managing to reach an uninhabited island. Van der Heyden describes the crew's desperate hunger, when they were tempted even to eat a worm-filled human corpse. They survived on turtles, snakes, iguana and occasionally rotten buffalo meat. By chance they reached mainland Bengal in the middle of the region's greatest war (1660-1662), so once ashore they were conscripted into the enormous Mogul army to fight against the kingdom of Assam, said to be cannibals. The gruesome massacre of captives by the Nabob is described and illustrated. Following the story of the voyage are descriptions of the kingdoms of Arrakan, Martaban, Tanassery, Bengala and Patan along the coast of the Bay of Bengal from modern Bangladesh to Burma.Though all editions are rare, those with woodcut illustrations aimed at a lower market seems to be the rarest.Slightly browned throughout, a minor dampstain in the inner margin of the fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

TWO ROYAL DOCUMENTS IN SPANISH, ONE ON VELLUM, THE OTHER ON PAPER, FROM KINGS PHILIP IV AND PHILIP V OF SPAIN, ALONG WITH A LEAD SEAL OF THE LATTER
Madrid, 1661. n. Written out by professional scribes whose careful work reflects the significant contents and the royal source, this is a commercial document of considerable length--and, as such, it is something rarely seen in the marketplace. Spanish documents from this period that become available for sale are almost all formulaic carta executoria manuscripts, so-called "grants of nobility" (but, in fact, verifications of nobility, obtained, by those with the means to do so, to prove that one's lineage has no trace of peasant, Jewish, or Moorish blood and that one should therefore by law be exempted from taxation). By contrast, the present document grants certain rights and privileges and deals with taxation and other regulations related to commerce in and around the agricultural town of Meco, located between Madrid and Guadalajara. In addition to this extensive document on vellum with many signatures (but not signed by Philip IV), there is included here a second, seven-page, document on paper. Also relating to Meco, this was written out 73 years later and does contain a royal signature, that of Philip V, the great-grandson of Philip IV. In addition--and perhaps most important--this grouping contains the lead seal of Philip IV, approximately 90 mm. in diameter and as heavy as the weightiness of a royal pronoucement suggests it should be. There is a braided cord extending from the bottom of the vellum document, so it is possible that the seal had previously been attached, but it is just as likely that someone has simply added it to related material. Excluding the carta exe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Valle, Pietro della.
1661. 12mo. 4 vols. (40), 670 pp. (2) ff. (1 blank), 734, (34) pp., (2) ff. (1 blank), 792, (18) pp. 756, (24) pp. Contemp. limp vellum with ms. spine titles; all edges of vol. 2 sprinkled in red. Early duodecimo reprint edition of Della Valle's complete "Viaggi", published while the first complete edition was still under the press. Della Valle's account is highly sought after as one of the earliest printed sources for the early history of Dibba, the coastal region at the northeastern tip of the United Arab Emirates, today ruled by the Emirates of Fujairah and of Sharjah. - Pietro della Valle (1586-1652) left Venice in 1614 on a pilgrimage to Palestine, proceeding to Baghdad and then into Persia, where he married and sojourned in the court of Shah Abbas. While staying with the Sultan of Bandar Abbas, he "met the son of the ruler of Dibba who was visiting. From this he learned that Dibba had formerly been subject to the kingdom of Hormuz, but was at that time loyal to the Safavids who in 1623 sent troops to Dibba, Khor Fakkan and other ports on the southeast coast of Arabia in order to prepare for a Portuguese counter-attack following their expulsion from Hormuz (Jarun). In fact, the Portuguese under Ruy Freire were so successful that the people of Dibba turned on their Safavid overlords, putting them all to death, whereupon a Portuguese garrison of 50 men was installed at Dibba. More Portuguese forces, however, had to be sent to Dibba in 1627 as a result of an Arab revolt. Curiously, two years later the Portuguese proposed moving part of the Mandaean population of southern … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berquen, Robert de.
1661. 4to. (12), 112 pp. With engr. portrait frontispiece of Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans and numerous pretty woodcut initials and tailpieces. Contemp. richly gilt calf, leading edges and spine gilt (tiny defect to upper spine-end and hinge). Marbled pastedowns. First edition of this rare work on precious stones and pearls found in the East and West Indies, written by a Parisian "marchand orphèvre". Dedicated to "La Grande Mademoiselle" Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier and niece of Louis XIII, with her finely engraved portrait by L. Boissevin (which, according to Graesse, is frequently lacking). This "very early, and important treatise on gemstones, gold & silver" (Sinkankas) includes a chapter dedicated exclusively to pearls, a subject with which the author was especially familiar (cf. ibid.), and the Persian Gulf is stated as one of the main locations of pearl fishing: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. Dans le Golfe Persique, principalement aux environs de l'Isle d'Ormus & Bassora: aupres de Baroyn [i.e., Bahrain], Catiffa, Iuffa, Camaron, & autres lieux de ce Golfe [...]" (p. 74). "The first chapter attempts to reconcile differing views of various writers, as cited by Berquen, on the origin of gemstones and precious metals, with following chapters taking up the principal gemstones, and some minor ones, as diamond, sapphire, topaz, ruby, spinel, emerald, amethyst, aquamarine, hyacinth, opal, chrysolite, iris, vermeille, garnets, carnelian, turquoise, quartz varieties, pearl, coral and amber, and lastly, a chapter on gold and silver [...] … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ignatius a Jesus.
1661. Small 4to. (2), 60 pp. Modern contemporary-style ivory vellum, handwritten title on spine. Extremely rare first edition of this valuable Persian grammar printed in Rome on the presses of the "Propaganda Fide". The third work of this kind, preceded only by those of Louis de Dieu (Leiden 1639) and of Greaves (London 1649). Willems notes that G. B. Raimondi, as early as 1614, produced a grammar in Rome for the use of missionaries which remained virtually unknown in the west, but this existed only in manuscript. The grammars of Greaves and of the present author were both "largely based on De Dieu" (Smitskamp). - Ignazio di Gesù (Carlo Leonelli) was a 17th century Italian missionary. He "belonged to the Order of Discalced Carmelites, and preached the Gospel in Turkey, Asia Minor, Armenia, and Persia, where he stayed over a long period. He especially tried to convert to the Catholic faith the so-called sectarians of Saint John (in eastern Mendaï). He returned to Rome in 1650" (cf. Hoefer). An account of his travels was included in the collection of Thevenot. His present small work, though not the work of an orientalist nor indeed a scholar, is still a true grammar based on elements collected during the author's journeys. - Some light foxing and browning as common, slight abrasion on title (vignette very slightly affected), lacks final blank leaf. Old library shelfmark in ink to title. A very good copy. Brunet III, 405. Schwab 863. Smitskamp 310 c.
