Mortier Peter (1661 - 1711) Amsterdam
Artist: Mortier Peter ( - 1711) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1700 1661 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Folded, partly restored, left margin replaced; - size (in cm): 59 x 80; - description: Map shows South Africa and the Cap of good hope; -vita of the artist: Pieter Mortier (1661?1711) was an 18th-century mapmaker and engraver from the Northern Netherlands. Mortier had a partnership with Johannes Covens I (1697-1774) and founded the map publishing company Covens & Mortier (1721-1866). Mortier, being French himself, had easy access to French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. Consequently, much of Mortier's business was built upon leveraging the sophisticated Dutch printing establishment to issue embellished high quality editions of previously contemporary French maps. In the greater context of global cartography, this was a significant advantage as most Dutch map publishes had, at this point, fallen into the miasma of reprinting their own outdated works. By contrast, the cartographers of France were producing the most accurate and up to date charts anywhere. Mortier's cartographic work culminated in the magnificent nautical atlas, Le Neptune Francois. Upon Pierre's death in 1711 this business was inherited by his widow. In 1721 his son Cornelius Mortier took over the day to day operation of the firm. Cornelius partnered with his brother-in-law Jean Covens to form one of history's great cartographic partnerships - Covens and Mortier - which continued to publish maps and atlases until about 18 … [Click Below for Full Description]

[PLAN - AMSTERDAM CITY HALL]. [CAMPEN, Jacob van].
Cf. BAL 533 (1st Dutch ed.); Fowler 77 & 274 (1st Dutch ed.); Berlin Kat. 2235 (1st French ed.). Very large engraved plan showing the extraordinary cartographic mosaic floor of the Burgerzaal of the Amsterdam City Hall, designed by Jacob van Campen, with a celestial map in the centre and the magnificent map of the world in 2 hemispheres on either side. The engraving was first published in 1661, and the map shows Tasman's recent discoveries in Australia and Tasmania, and depicts California as an island. Many discoveries from his second voyage remained otherwise unpublished until the end of the 17th-century. This engraved representation is all that is left of this cartographical work of art. Wear caused by people walking on the mosaic meant it had to be restored about a hundred years later. When in turn this restoration was damaged the two hemispheres were filled in with plain marble slabs without pictorial representation. The drawing of the floor was made by Jacob Vennekool who worked closely with Van Campen, and since his drawings were first published even before the building was completed, they may reflect Van Campen's plan more closely than the finished building itself. They also, of course, show it before the alterations made at various times in later years.Slightly wrinkled in the right margin, one fold reinforced and a few tiny spots, otherwise in very good condition.

MASO, Giacomo (1624-1674)
Palermo, Giuseppe Bisagni, 1661 - 4to (198 x 144 mm), pp [xxiv, including engraved coat-of-arms] 481 [1], with half-title, woodcut device on title, one engraved plate at end, and numerous woodcut illustrations in text; a very clean, crisp copy in contemporary vellum.First edition of this rare treatise on cosmology, all published of a work originally intended to be in six parts or volumes. This volume is devoted to the armillary sphere and the understanding of celestial movements. The text contains frequent references to Galileo and perhaps reflects the influence of Maso's Sicilian contemporary Giovanni Battista Odierna (1597-1660).The text refers to observations made in Malta as well as Palermo. Maso cites Copernicus, Giordano Bruno, Christoph Grienberger, Kircher, Kepler, Longomontanus, Clavius, Cabeo, Riccioli, et al, along with observations made on the voyages of Magellan, Francis Drake, and others. Giacomo Maso, a Sicilian, studied sciences at the Jesuit Collegio Romano under Athanius Kircher, completing his studies around 1650. He then taught military architecture and mathematics in Malta, and helped organise the defences of Malta against the Turks, working directly for the Grand Master of the Knights of St John. He seems to have become disillusioned with the Jesuits and left the order, becoming a canon with the order of St. Georges until it was suppressed by Clement IX. He returned to Sicily, where he taught mathematics and astronomy in Palermo.Sommervogel V 697.1; Riccardi I.2 134; OCLC records only one North American location, Michigan, and only four European locati … [Click Below for Full Description]

Menestrier, Francois
Lyon, Coral/du Perier, 1661. 12o. Full leather, worn top spine end. Paper somewhat browned. Exlibris Daniel de Bruin. (28)+III+(9) pages. Illustrated with a folding engraving of the coronation of Charles King of Naples and Sicily in 1265 by Cardinal Raoul de Chevriers and 10 full page engravings of coats-of-arms and woodcuts in the text. Some water staining in the first few pages. Claude-François Ménestrier (9 March 1631 - 21 January 1705) was a French heraldist, a member of the Society of Jesus [Jesuit], and attendant of the royal court. Ménestrier was born in Lyon. He produced numerous books on heraldry, and was one of the greatest authorities on heraldry of his age. Ménestrier was the professor of the colleges in Chambéry, Vienne, Grenoble, and Lyon. During 1669-70 he intended to travel to Germany and Italy, but only reached Paris and lived there to his death. He was the most widely known heraldist of his time, and from 1622 he was in close correspondence with Philipp Jakob Spener, the founder of the German scientific heraldry who refused the merely symbolic interpretation of arms. Ménestrier maintained that we can know the essence of heraldry only from the sources from the age of living heraldry, but he was also influenced by the heraldic view of his age. Thus, his researches were abortive. This attractive book is dedicated to Claude Joseph and Leonard Francois de Chevriers, two French noblemen. The 'epistre' contains a genealogy of their family. H146.

Tesauro, Emanuele:
Mediolani (Mailand), apud Bidellium (Bidellius), 1661. 12 x 7,5 cm. 8 Blatt, 224 Seiten. Dazwischen liegen sechs genealogische Entwicklungsstufen: Mundi pueritia (pastores), Mundi adolescentia (milites), Juventus Mundi (duces), Mundi virilitas (reges), Mundi senectus (solitarii) und Nova Aetas (sancti). Bacon, Francis [1561 - 1626]
London: Printed for R. H. and H. B. and are to be sold at Westminster and the Royal Exchange, 1661. 1st Edition (Gibson 232; Wing B302). Modern tan quarter calf binding with brownish paper boards. Title gilt stamped to spine. Light binding wear. Bookplate of Fairfax of Cameron to front paste-down, with old bookseller slip affixed above. Book label of Nicholas Wall to rear paste-down. Period marginalia & underlining throughout, though the text-block trimmed at some point in the past, occasionally affecting the marginalia. Still, a Very Good Plus copy.. [2], 14 pp. 4to: A - B^4. 7-1/4" x 5-3/8" Quoting the slip, "Bacon's first approach to the favourite to whom he looked for advancement, and to whom in large measure he owed his rise." A somewhat minor effort of Bacon's, but perhaps giving a bit of insight into his conduct with James, from whom he too became a favorite, eventually ascending to the position of, in 1618, Lord Chancellor. On 12 July 1618 the king created Bacon Baron Verulam, of Verulam, in the Peerage of England; Bacon then became known as Francis, Lord Verulam. Uncommon in the trade; as we write this, we find no other copies currently on offer, with ABPC showing no copies at auction these past 30+ years, and the same result with a RBH search, i.e., no copies recorded.

BLONDEL, David.:
London, printed by T(homas) R(oycroft) for the author, 1661. as also of the books now extant under their names, and the errours crept into Christian religion, from the impostures contained therein, particularly, concerning the state of the just, and unjust after death. ... Englished by J. Davies. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, 1661. Folio, 285 x 185 mm, 11¼ x 7¼ inches, pages: (4), 293, (7), headpieces and decorated initials to chapter headings, bound in full contemporary calf, blind-tooled border to covers, rebacked in lighter leather, gilt rules and original gilt lettered label to spine, new endpapers. Covers slightly marked, small scrape to leather on lower cover, engraved armorial bookplate preserved on front pastedown (Thomas Fuller M.D. (1634-1734) physician and preacher who published a compilation of proverbs entitled Gnomologia), 1 page has small pale ink stain, just affecting 1 word, 1 small corner tip torn off, otherwise text clean and binding tight and firm. A very good copy. DAVID BLONDEL (1591-1655), was a French Protestant clergyman, historian and classical scholar. In 1650 he succeeded G. J. Vossius in the professorship of history at Amsterdam. His works were very numerous; in some of them he showed a remarkable critical faculty, as in his dissertation on Pope Joan (1647, 1657), in which he came to the conclusion, now universally accepted, that the whole story is a mere myth. Considerable Protestant indignation was excited against him on account of this book. His work on the Sibyls of classical times was first published in French in 1649.
