Menestrier, Francois
Lyon, Coral/du Perier, 1661. 12o. Full leather, worn top spine end. Paper somewhat browned. Exlibris Daniel de Bruin. (28)+III+(9) pages. Illustrated with a folding engraving of the coronation of Charles King of Naples and Sicily in 1265 by Cardinal Raoul de Chevriers and 10 full page engravings of coats-of-arms and woodcuts in the text. Some water staining in the first few pages. Claude-François Ménestrier (9 March 1631 - 21 January 1705) was a French heraldist, a member of the Society of Jesus [Jesuit], and attendant of the royal court. Ménestrier was born in Lyon. He produced numerous books on heraldry, and was one of the greatest authorities on heraldry of his age. Ménestrier was the professor of the colleges in Chambéry, Vienne, Grenoble, and Lyon. During 1669-70 he intended to travel to Germany and Italy, but only reached Paris and lived there to his death. He was the most widely known heraldist of his time, and from 1622 he was in close correspondence with Philipp Jakob Spener, the founder of the German scientific heraldry who refused the merely symbolic interpretation of arms. Ménestrier maintained that we can know the essence of heraldry only from the sources from the age of living heraldry, but he was also influenced by the heraldic view of his age. Thus, his researches were abortive. This attractive book is dedicated to Claude Joseph and Leonard Francois de Chevriers, two French noblemen. The 'epistre' contains a genealogy of their family. Tesauro, Emanuele:
Mediolani (Mailand), apud Bidellium (Bidellius), 1661. 12 x 7,5 cm. 8 Blatt, 224 Seiten. Dazwischen liegen sechs genealogische Entwicklungsstufen: Mundi pueritia (pastores), Mundi adolescentia (milites), Juventus Mundi (duces), Mundi virilitas (reges), Mundi senectus (solitarii) und Nova Aetas (sancti). Bacon, Francis [1561 - 1626]
London: Printed for R. H. and H. B. and are to be sold at Westminster and the Royal Exchange, 1661. 1st Edition (Gibson 232; Wing B302). Modern tan quarter calf binding with brownish paper boards. Title gilt stamped to spine. Light binding wear. Bookplate of Fairfax of Cameron to front paste-down, with old bookseller slip affixed above. Book label of Nicholas Wall to rear paste-down. Period marginalia & underlining throughout, though the text-block trimmed at some point in the past, occasionally affecting the marginalia. Still, a Very Good Plus copy.. [2], 14 pp. 4to: A - B^4. 7-1/4" x 5-3/8" Quoting the slip, "Bacon's first approach to the favourite to whom he looked for advancement, and to whom in large measure he owed his rise." A somewhat minor effort of Bacon's, but perhaps giving a bit of insight into his conduct with James, from whom he too became a favorite, eventually ascending to the position of, in 1618, Lord Chancellor. On 12 July 1618 the king created Bacon Baron Verulam, of Verulam, in the Peerage of England; Bacon then became known as Francis, Lord Verulam. Uncommon in the trade; as we write this, we find no other copies currently on offer, with ABPC showing no copies at auction these past 30+ years, and the same result with a RBH search, i.e., no copies recorded.

His works were very numerous; in some of them he showed a remarkable critical faculty, as in his dissertation on Pope Joan (1647, 1657), in which he came to the conclusion, now universally accepted, that the whole story is a mere myth. Mediolani (Mailand), apud Bidellium (Bidellius), 1661. 12 x 7,5 cm. 8 Blatt, 224 Seiten. Dazwischen liegen sechs genealogische Entwicklungsstufen: Mundi pueritia (pastores), Mundi adolescentia (milites), Juventus Mundi (duces), Mundi virilitas (reges), Mundi senectus (solitarii) und Nova Aetas (sancti). [Click Below for Full Description]

Pagan, Blaise Francois, Count de Merveilles
First English edition, translated from the French by William Hamilton -first Paris 1656. Illustrated with a folding map entitled "Magni Amazoni Fluvii in America Meridionali nova delineate" of north South America, focusing on the Brazilian Amazon region and River. Sabin says the work includes "Several chapters... devoted to descriptions of the aborigines of the valley of the Amazon"; in addition there are topographical descriptions of the various regions, mentioning potential products suitable for commerce. There is evidence to suggest that the work is ostensibly a translation from Acuña´s Nuevo Descubrimiento del gran Rio de las Amazonas (Madrid, 1641). Of this latter, only a few copies are known since it was suppressed by order of the King, probably due to the fact that the relation by Acuña mentioned that the Amazon River was navigable from Quito to the Atlantic. "The value of Pagan´s work is shown in his dedication to Cardinal Mazarin, in which he urges him to take possession of the Amazon and establish several colonies... The map drawn by Pagan is of great importance as a proof of the French ambitions in the Amazon regions" (Borba de Moraes). In this English translation, William Hamilton (the translator), urges the King of England to take possession of Brazil. The work is one of the most important sources of information about the Amazon River and North Brazil. Pagan advocated the conquest of the Amazon by France, and in the dedicatory epistle of the present edition the translator suggests that England should attempt the same. JCBL says "...Pagan, Comte de Merveilles... … [Click Below for Full Description]

[WIC - BRAZIL].
Borba de Moraes, p. 50; Boxer, The Dutch in Brazil, pp. 253-255; Knuttel 8730. Second edition, of the Dutch translation of the peace treaty ending the Dutch-Portuguese war. The WIC (Dutch West India Company) and VOC (Dutch East India Company) were at war with the Portuguese Armada, mainly to gain hegemony in the overseas colonies and trade. The war officially ended in August 1661, though the peace treaty was not ratified until 1663. “The main provisions of the treaty were as follows. Portugal was to pay the United Provinces 4 million cruzados in sixteen years as an indemnity for the loss of Netherlands Brazil, ... The Dutch were to be granted trade and residence in Portugal and her overseas possessions on the same terms as those already enjoyed by the English, or which might be granted to the latter in the future... The treaty was to be ratified within three months and published within six; but owing to the subsequent disputes and delays, the formal publication did not take place until March and April 1663” (Boxer).Slightly browned and the margins somewhat thumbed. Paper wrappers soiled and spine damaged. Still a good copy.
