STAMPIOEN, Jan Janzoon
Amsterdam,: Johann Vingbooms, 1660. Amsterdam,: Johann Vingbooms,, 1660.. Folio (500 by 340mm), six single page engraved coats-of-arms, engraved wall map in nine sections, all with fine original hand-colour, size if joined 1470 by 2340 mm. This beautiful wall map shows the water board of Schieland en de Krimpenerwaard in southwest Holland, based on surveys initiated by the Dyke Reeves of the Schieland Polder in 1648, as the 1611 map of Balthasar Floris was outdated. The survey was done by Jan Janszoon Stampioen between 1649 and 1654. After a long search, a qualified engraver was found in Johann Vingbooms of Amsterdam, best known for the exquisite manuscript maps and views he produced based on Dutch East and West India Company materials. Johannes van de Vennip was engaged to colour the map. The drawing, engraving and printing cost an astonishing 3,350 guilders. The map lays out the principal towns, villages, and settlements, differentiating the land ownerships. Also shown are the borders of the polders (tracks of reclaimed lands) together with the names of their owners. It displays drainage canals, windmills, certain cultivated areas, ornamental gardens, some larger buildings, churches, and street or canal plans of the cities of Rotterdam, Delfshaven, Gouda and Schiedam. The map, if mounted completely, is surrounded by coats-of-arms on three sides. We have only been able to trace two examples of this edition: Yale University Library, and in the archive of 'Hoogheemraadschap van Schieland en de Krimpenerwaard' in the Netherlands. Both maps are uncoloured. Our copy seems to … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLOUNT, Thomas
[History] ~ DISASTER TURNED TRIUMPH BLOUNT, Thomas Boscobel: or, the history of his Sacred Majesties Most miraculous Preservation After the Battle of Worcester, 3. Sept. 1651 London. Printed for Henry Seile, Stationer to the Kings most Excellent Majesty, 1660. 8vo. [8], 6, 5-55pp, [1]. Issue with dedication signed 'Tho. Blount'. With folding engraved frontispiece portrait, a further engraved diagram of Boscobel House and the Royal Oake (by Wenceslaus Hollar) and an engraved armorial. Finely bound in nineteenth-century hard-grained brown morocco, richly gilt (by Mackenzie). Marbled endpapers. A.E.G. With decorative gilt bookplate ('JE SUIS LOYAL') to FEP. Occasional marking, small glue spot and old paper repair to b4, neat early annotations referring to Bate's Elenchi Motuum Neperorum in Anglia (London, 1661-3) to E1-2. The uncommon first edition of an iconic Restoration title; a work that more than many other in the history of the Stuart monarchy turned what had been a disaster, loss at the 1651 Battle of Worcester and propaganda gift to the Cromwellians of a royal claimant's hiding in an oak tree, into a triumph of foresight and preservation. Not intended as mere propagandist text, English antiquary and Catholic Thomas Blount's (1618-1679) account of the events at Boscobel House was sourced from several eyewitnesses, and referenced the part played by English Recusants at White Ladies, Boscobel and Moseley Old Hall. The accuracy of the work, along with royal approval, ensured the work's status; it was continued in 1681 and the text reprinted throughout the seventeenth and e … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dopo la sua morte nel 1638, a cura del figlio Johan si giunse nel 1662 alla pubblicazione del celebre "Atlas Maior" in 11 volumi. BLAEU, JOAN
17th-CENTURY RUSSIA ?Tabula Russiae...?. Copper engraving of Russia with armorial cartouche, large inset plan of Moscow and smaller inset view of Archangelsk. Published by Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam around 1660, as part of a Latin edition of his Atlas Maior. Colured by a later hand. Size (print): approx. 43 x 55 cm. The Atlas Maior in its various editions was the largest atlas ever published. It was justly famed (?the greatest and finest atlas ever published? - Koeman) for its production values, its high typographic standard, the quality of its engraving, ornamentation, binding and colouring. Blaeu?s atlas frequently served as the official gift of the Dutch Republic to princes and other authorities. It is one of the most lavish and highly prized of all seventeenth century illustrated books. The maps are embellished in the Baroque style, and many rank among the most beautiful ever made. This map of Russia, originally part of the Atlas Maior volume II, is based on Hessel Gerritsz? important 1614 map of Russia, which he compiled from manuscripts brought back by Isaac Massa. Massa was a wealthy Dutch grain trader and the envoy to Moscow during the reign of Boris Gudunov. Hessel Gerritsz in turn, was the first exclusive cartographer of the Dutch East India Company and considered one of the foremost Dutch cartographers of the seventeenth century. Price: ?2.150,-.

London: printed by J.G. for Samuel Thomson, 1660. First edition, folio, engraved frontispiece after W. Faithorn, title printed in red and black, text primarily in triple column; entry words in English throughout; a pleasing copy in full contemporary calf, unrestored; gilt spine, red morocco label; with the half-title (also printed in red and black); some cracking of joints at the extremities, the whole a bit scuffed and rubbed, sections of the text significantly spotted, but generally a good, sound copy. In addition to the proverbs, the book contains prefatory poems on language, a 6-p. note "To the tru philologer," and many separate sections at the back giving terminology in a number of specific jargons: i.e. anatomy, horsemanship, hunting and venery, military, nautical, architecture and "household stuff", among others. Howell (?1594-1666) was an accomplished linguist and historiographer to Charles II (see DNB for a long description of his sometimes checkered career). Besides being one of the first Englishmen to earn a livelihood out of literature, he possessed a rare mastery of the modern languages, including his native Welsh. In addition to this polyglot, Howell issued a revised edition of Cotgrave's French-English Dictionary in 1650; A New English Grammar for Foreigners (1662); and a posthumously published French grammar (1673). PANCIROLI, Guido
1660. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Guido Panciorli was a 16th-century Italian historian known for his most popular book 'Memorabilium' - a work which gives a general account of inventions and technology in Europe as well as discoveries in America. Bigmore & Wyman claim that the frontispiece, which depicts a printer's room, was used as proof in the discussion that in the early days of typography it was customary to employ anagnostes. According to Ferguson, "Pancirollo's work is interesting, not only as giving some notion of the state of knowledge as to the history of invention in his time, bus as displaying the attitude of scholars towards the practical arts of the ancient." This work has an important section on alchemy and pseudo-science findings. [Attributes: First Edition]

DONCKER, HENDRIK (C. 1625-1699)
"Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula. Copper engraving made by Frederick de Wit 't Amsterdam in de Calverstraat inde Witte Pascaart 1660, published in De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Wereld of Hendrik Doncker in Amsterdam from 1660 to 1670. With original hand colouring. Size: 47 x 56 cm (plus margins). This was De Wit's first world map. He derived it from the two hemisphere maps from Blaeu's wall map of 1648, reducing them in scale and making some changes. (Bleau's own smaller world map with two hemispheres can be found here.) The upper corners contain northern and southern celestial maps and the lower corners show north and south polar projections. In the bottom center are astronomical diagrams -- a geocentric one on the left and a Copernican one on the right. The top center vignette shows the sun encircled by a zodiacal ring. Between the maps and diagrams are four vignettes with allegorical depictions of the Four Elements (air, fire, earth and water). The map also includes Baroque decorations of garlands of fruit and flowers. A magnificent example of the art of mapmaking, this map is one of only 19 reproduced in color in Rodney Shirley's major scholarly work on world maps of the 15th to 17th centuries. In accompanying text, the author states that ""[e]specially when richly coloured, De Wit's map is one of the most decorative standard-size maps of the time and it is much less commonly found than his three other atlas world maps."" Frederick de Wit (1630-1706) was founder of a prominent map publishing firm in 17th century Amsterdam, the golden age of Dutch cartography. The De Wit fam … [Click Below for Full Description]
