JANSSON, Jan.
Amsterdam, c.1660, blank verso. Coloured. 440 x 510mm. Some restoration at top centerfold. A decorative map of Arabia, first published 1658. Mecca and Medina are marked reasonably accurately but the rest of the interior is quite imaginative. The Persian Gulf coastline is also vague: Bahrain is marked inaccurately, despite their pearl fishery being known to the Romans and there is no Qatari peninsula. Jan Janssonius produced this detailed map of the Arabian Peninsula which was divided in three Roman Provinces: ' Arabia Felix', 'Arabia Petraea' and 'Arabia Deserta'. Because of the lack of new information, Jansson had to rely on the old Ptolemaic names for his new map. 'Arabia Felix', Latin for 'Loyal Arabia' covers the majority of the Peninsula, even though the term relates to the comparatively fertile regions of present day Asir and Yemen. 'Arabia Petraea' (Stony Arabia) is located in North West Arabia and was a frontier province of imperial Rome. 'Arabia Deserta' (Desert Arabia) in Latin meant the desert interior, which was populated by nomadic tribes who frequently invaded richer lands. Jansson has placed 'Arabia Deserta' in a smaller area in the North east; he probably did this to balance the descriptions of the other regions depicted with scores of rivers; most of the interior drawn on the map was imaginary. Published in Jansson's 'Atlas Novus' TIBBETTS: 101.

Bulino, 1660 circa, firmato in basso a destra "HBary Sculptor". Da un affresco di Raffaello. Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
Finely executed celestial chart illustrating the motions of both the upright sphere (the equatorial co-ordinate system) and the oblique sphere (the ecliptic co-ordinate system); the celestial and terrestrial longitudes; and the influences of the stars, from the 1708 Valk & Schenk edition of Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica Andreas Cellarius was born in 1596 in Neuhausen and educated in Heidelberg. He emigrated to Holland in the early 17th Century and in 1637 moved to Hoorn, where he became the rector of the Latin School. Cellarius' best known work is his Harmonia Macrocosmica, first issued in 1660 by Jan Jansson, as a supplement to Jansson's Atlas Novus. The work consists of a series of Celestial Charts begun by Cellarius in 1647 and intended as part of a two volume treatise on cosmography, which was never issued. Cellarius' charts are the most sought after of celestial charts, blending the striking imagery of the golden age of Dutch Cartography with contemporary scientific knowledge. The present examples come from the Valk & Schenk edition of Cellarius' atlas, which is unchanged from the 1661 edition. The 1660 and 1661 editions can be distinguished by the inclusion of a plate number in the lower right … [Click Below for Full Description]

Panciroli, Guido
Heirs of G. Schoenwetter, 1660. Hardcover. A handsome copy of Panciroli's encyclopaedic history of ancient and modern arts and technology. The first part treats the arts and techniques of antiquity, including papyrus, roads, statues, libraries, labyrinths, the pyramids, tombs, obelisks, dress and accessories such as the fibula, wine, slavery, Roman writing and writing surfaces, equitation, hunting and food production, and the performing arts, including music, musica muta (pantomime), and stagecraft. Part II, on inventions unknown to the ancients, opens with a long section on the New World, discussing its discovery, the effects of the encounter on the natives (venereal disease tops the list), American crops and products including sassafras, plantains, and many other fruits and herbs, with their uses by the Native Americans. Other sections are devoted to the history of printing in China and Europe, papermaking, sugar, alchemy, porcelain, time-pieces, bells, ciphers and codes, glasses, silk-weaving, tournaments and jousts, and watermills. "Pancirollo's work is interesting, not only as giving some notion of the state of knowledge as to the history of invention in his time, but as displaying the attitude of scholars towards the practical arts of the ancients" (John K. Ferguson: Book of Secrets). Edited by Heinrich Salmuth, with an engraved title after Sebastian Furck. Provenance: Duke August of Brunswick-Luneburg, bookplate and printed shelf number 57; Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel, library and withdrawal stamps on verso of the title page. Quarto. Ribera, Jose de
S.a. [c. 1660-1690]. Folio, (340 x 285 mm; engraved surface 208 x 212mm). Paper wrappers, in recent half cloth over boards case. Excellent impressions, margins occasionally a little darkened, original stitching.- A very fine and clean copy with wide margins of this extremely rare collection of engravings by Ribera, dated to the second quarter of the 17thcentury, this collection is particularly beautiful and well engraved. Frontispiece shows a man thinking, it is signed “AB”, who Brown couldn’t identify, the National Library of Madrid attributes it to Abraham Blootenling (1640-1690). This folio of engravings belongs to a tradition of books of Ribera’s prints, the earliest of which was published in 1650 when Ribera was still alive.Ribera’s outstanding technical abilities in the use of pen, ink and chalk and the originality of subject matter made him an influential model. These folios, now very rare, played an important role in making Ribera’s prints available to artists throughout the continent and, according to Brown, there is ample evidence that they were heavily used –both in Spain and other parts of Europe.Ribera’s prints enjoyed a wide circulation during his lifetime, which was further increased by the anonymous etched and engraved copies they inspired. More important in spreading his ideas were the folios of engravings containing from 10 to 24 pages that reproduced Ribera’s prints. The first folio of such copies was engraved by Louis Ferdinand, a French painter and engraver (1612-1689) which were published in P … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROBERT (Nicolas)].
1660. [ROBERT (Nicolas)]. [Click Below for Full Description]
