Three tracts from the Civil War and Commonwealth period. The first tract is a list of state expenditure. An earlier edition had been printed in 1647. This 1660 edition had two states; in this one, the 'B' of B1 is under the 'a'. There's no casual priority to either state, but this state is more common. The second tract proposes that Cromwell come to an agreement with the exiled Charles where he will retake the throne upon Cromwell's death, citing Cromwell's unpopularity and the inadvisability of an elective or hereditary protectorate. Frankfurt: 1660. Good+ hardback in vellum with bookplate on front pastedown. NOTE: Domestic Book(s) may be returned for full credit for any reason if received within 14 days from customer receipt. Shipping charges will be included ONLY if the book(s) are NOT as described. PLEASE NOTE! This book has incorrect pagination as is evidenced in photos 5-8. Page 48 seems to skip to page 51 and item #24 on page 48 seems to skip to item to item #26 on page 51. (SEE PHOTO #5) However, if you go to page 52 you will see another item #26. (SEE PHOTO #6). What appears to have happened is that the printer got confused as there in no break in the continuity of the sentence structure between page 48 & 41 and that the 1st item #26, on page 51 should actually be item #25. Furthermore, there is no evidence of any pages being removed. A similar situation exists on pp 256-267 whereby page 256 jumps to 267. Again, the printer probably had one too many schnapps as item #7 on page 256 is followed by item #8 on 267. (SEE PHOTO #7). Item #9 follows on page 268. (SEE PAGE #8) Like the first example, there is no break in the continuity of sentence structure and no visible signs of any pages removed. The book shows the Title Page and is then followed by the text block which starts with page #1 and ends with page #319 - although, as shown above there are not 319 pages. The text block is then followed by an index of A-Z It is our opinion that the book has had no loss of text or pages but, as shown above, has a pagination problem whereby the printer has run amok. Panciroli, Guido
Heirs of G. Schoenwetter, 1660. Hardcover. A handsome copy of Panciroli's encyclopaedic history of ancient and modern arts and technology. The first part treats the arts and techniques of antiquity, including papyrus, roads, statues, libraries, labyrinths, the pyramids, tombs, obelisks, dress and accessories such as the fibula, wine, slavery, Roman writing and writing surfaces, equitation, hunting and food production, and the performing arts, including music, musica muta (pantomime), and stagecraft. Part II, on inventions unknown to the ancients, opens with a long section on the New World, discussing its discovery, the effects of the encounter on the natives (venereal disease tops the list), American crops and products including sassafras, plantains, and many other fruits and herbs, with their uses by the Native Americans. Other sections are devoted to the history of printing in China and Europe, papermaking, sugar, alchemy, porcelain, time-pieces, bells, ciphers and codes, glasses, silk-weaving, tournaments and jousts, and watermills. "Pancirollo's work is interesting, not only as giving some notion of the state of knowledge as to the history of invention in his time, but as displaying the attitude of scholars towards the practical arts of the ancients" (John K. Ferguson: Book of Secrets). Edited by Heinrich Salmuth, with an engraved title after Sebastian Furck. Giovanni Battista NICOLOSI
Parigi, 1660. Interestings and importants Western and Eastern Hemispheres maps, who copied the cartographical details of Sanson. The Colleggio di Propaganda da Fide commissioned the cartographer Giovanni Nicolosi (1610/70) the realization of an atlas in 1652. Nicolosi was not only a famous and estimated priest and Vatican functionary, but was also a well known cartographer and writer. He admired Galileo event though, due to his profession, he dissociated himself from his theories, sticking with the Church and its Ptolemaic vision of the world. As a result, he published in 1660 his Dell'Ercole e Studio geografico. A second edition of his work was printed in Rome by Mascardi in 1670/71 with the title of Hercules Siculus Sive Studium Geographicum, containing geographic maps of the world and the continents. L'ANATHEME DU TABAC
7 pp. 8vo (225 x 160 mm.), attractive antique red morocco backed marbled boards, spine gilt. Paris: N. Asseline, 1660. First and only edition of this very rare French ode to tobacco. "The author presents, in verse, a most disturbing picture of the effects of smoking: the hearts as well as the brains of smokers become black, and tobacco addicts are lost spiritually and physically. The author himself, formerly an inveterate smoker has, at the last minute, been saved from the abyss by a certain good influence, which he neglects to specify. He is now using the solitude and safety of his present retreat to write this warning."-Arents 275. Fine copy of a quite curious poem. We find no record of this work in WorldCat. DU VAL, Pierre
Paris,: Antoine de Fer, 1660. DescriptionEngraved map, some light foxing to margins. NotesRare geographic game of the Franco-Spanish War (1635-1659).The game consists of 26 ovals, each labelled with a date between 1635 until the peace treaty of 1660. Each oval is divided in half: the left half details the progress made by the French in that year, and the right half details the progress made by the Spanish. On the right hand side of the board is a list of rules, outlining the various penalties or prizes for landing on certain ovals. It is a game for up to four players with two dice, and each player has to put up their stake before joining the game. The object is to be the first to land on the final oval of 1660 with an exact throw of the dice.Rare. We are able to trace only two institutional examples: in the British Library (a later state dated 1705); and an example in the BNF.Pierre du Val (1619-1683) was the nephew of the great French geographer Nicolas Sanson. His father was a merchant but he followed in his uncles footsteps, becoming a mapmaker, and was eventually appointed geographer to the King. He specialised in geographical games, often with this spiral race format, inspired by early board games like the Game of the Goose. BL Maps CC.5.a.86., for 1705 edition. James Howell
London: printed by J.G. for Samuel Thomson, 1660. First edition, folio, engraved frontispiece after W. Faithorn, title printed in red and black, text primarily in triple column; entry words in English throughout; a pleasing copy in full contemporary calf, unrestored; gilt spine, red morocco label; with the half-title (also printed in red and black); some cracking of joints at the extremities, the whole a bit scuffed and rubbed, sections of the text significantly spotted, but generally a good, sound copy. In addition to the proverbs, the book contains prefatory poems on language, a 6-p. note "To the tru philologer," and many separate sections at the back giving terminology in a number of specific jargons: i.e. anatomy, horsemanship, hunting and venery, military, nautical, architecture and "household stuff", among others. Howell (?1594-1666) was an accomplished linguist and historiographer to Charles II (see DNB for a long description of his sometimes checkered career). Besides being one of the first Englishmen to earn a livelihood out of literature, he possessed a rare mastery of the modern languages, including his native Welsh. In addition to this polyglot, Howell issued a revised edition of Cotgrave's French-English Dictionary in 1650; A New English Grammar for Foreigners (1662); and a posthumously published French grammar (1673). The battle at Weissen Berg, near Prague (1620), cost Frederick not only the "Winter Kingdom" but also his electoral Palatinate, which together with the electoral dignity and the Upper Palatinate was transferred in 1623 to Maximilian of Bavaria. The entire burden of the war rested for decades upon the Palatinate; the famous library of Heidelberg was presented to the pope by Tilly, who had captured the city in 1622. LOON, Jan van.
1660. Oxford: Moses Pitt, Steven Swart & Jan Jansson van Waesbergen, 1680, blank verso. Coloured. 480 x 565mm, with wide margins. Minor restoration at centrefold. Double-hemisphere world map decorated with allegorical figures of the Elements in the corners. Originally published in Amsterdam in 1666, this example comes from the uncommon English edition, re-engraved with a dedication to Charles II in the lower cusp. Jan Jansson à Waesberg, the original publisher, went into partnership with two English publishers, Pitt and Swart, to produce an twelve-volume 'English Atlas' to compete with Blaeu's. Between 1680 and 1683 four volumes of the atlas and the text for the fifth were printed in Oxford, but the mounting costs were too much. Production ceased, and for a time Pitt was locked up in the Fleet Prison for debt. SHIRLEY: 505, & 439 for the first state.

Amsterdam,: By Arnold Colom, for John Tuthill, Book-seller in Great Yarmouth, and to be sold by Severall, Bookesellers in London, 1660. Amsterdam,: By Arnold Colom, for John Tuthill, Book-seller in Great Yarmouth, and to be sold by Severall, Bookesellers in London,, 1660.. Containing a Description of all the knowne Coast, Islands, Sands, Depthes, and Roads, begining from the narrowest, of the Streat, unto Alexandrette in the Levant. Folio (420 by 375mm), engraved title, nineteen double-page engraved charts, numerous woodcut charts and coastal profiles within text, contemporary English panelled calf, rebacked. Arnold Colom, the son of Jacob Colom, was, like his father, a bookseller, printer, and chartmaker. He would appear to have produced only two maritime atlases throughout his career: a pilot of the Mediterranean, and a sea atlas of the world. The reasons for this are unclear, although, with the market so dominated by the likes of Janssonius, Goos, and Doncker, his work might have struggled to secure a foothold. Both Arnold and his father Jacob, produced pilots of the Mediterranean. However, when Arnold published his pilot in 1660 he chose not to reuse his father's copper plates, instead cutting new plates at the behest of John Tuthill, an English bookseller from Yarmouth. The contract that they signed survives, and states that Colom was to deliver 500 Strait-books unbound to John Tuthill at 45 pennies a piece; one hundred of which were to be sold by Colom. A penalty of 500 guilders was set out for both parties if the contract was breached: Tuthill for commissioning ano … [Click Below for Full Description]
