BAGSHAW, Edward
London printed by A.M. for Simon Miller at the Starre in St Pauls Church-yard. 8vo., engraved frontispiece (of a Royal Crown), (16) + 126 + (2)pp., including the final leaf (blank recto: longitudinal title on verso), contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt but worn. A very good sound copy. First edition. Edward Bagshaw (1589/90-1662), a London lawyer and member of the Long Parliament, had by 1641 moved towards the King's camp. 'In November 1641 he joined Hyde in speaking against the grand remonstrance and eventually he abandoned Westminster for Charles's parliament at Oxford. In June 1644, however, he was captured as a traitor and incarcerated in the king's bench prison, where he devoted his time to writing. During the 1630s Bagshaw completed a biography of Robert Bolton and edited a number of his works, and he later published many of his own parliamentary speeches, together with a defence of his aborted Lent readings. Bagshaw set out his royalist political views in The Rights of the Crown of England, as it is Established by Law> (1660), drafted in prison in 1644 but not published until the Restoration. In it he maintained that the crown's powers derived from God, but were assented to by the laws of England. No absolutist, Bagshaw reflected upon the experience of the 1640s and struggled to reconcile his high regard for the common law with the acknowledged powers of the king, ‘inasmuch as the safety of the one, is the safety of the other’ (pp. 116–17).' Dauncey, John
London: Printed for Richard Royston, 1660. First edition. Hardcover. Very good overall. A biography written by a committed royalist intended to restore Charles I's image. The copy of Henry B. H. Beaufoy, FRS, noted collector of Shakespeare and prestigious hot air balloonist, with his armorial bookplate. Beaufoy may have acquired the biography due to a Charles I and Shakespeare connection: in 1633 Shakespeare's version of 'The Taming of the Shrew' was performed at court before Charles I and Henrietta Maria. Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy (1786-1851), member of a wealthy Quaker family, was a philanthropist, artist and coin and book collector (the "Beaufoy Shakespeares," the first four folio editions of Shakespeare's works were sold at Christie's). Beaufoy famously made a hot air balloon flight with James Sadler (first English balloonist), from Hackney, Middlesex, to East Thorpe, Essex. In numerous other flights he collected valuable information for cartographers, meteorologists, and physicists. Slim, small 8vo, frontispiece portrait, 71pp, [1]pp advertisement, all edges gilt. Full tan calf ca. 1840s, rebacked spine gilt decorated, with the initials E. G. H. stamped at the front board; gilt title labels, "Historic Memoirs" and "Character of Charles I" at spine. Top of front board slightly sunned, lower corners slightly rubbed. Wing F 291. OCLC: 84781729. In 1912 a copy bound by Clarke was sold by Anderson Auction Company, provenance Library of Robert Doe. Light penciled name on the ffep of J. J. Blade, 1909. A very pleasant copy.

Pierre GASSENDI
[] ~ GASSENDI ON EPICURUS GASSENDI, Pierre Institutio logica, et philosophiae epicuri syntagma Londini, [i.e. London]. Officina Rogeri Danielis, 1660. . [12], 100pp. [Bound with:] GASSENDI, Pierre. Philosophiae epicuri syntagma, Continens Canonicam, Physicam, & Ethicam. Londini, [i.e. London]. Ex officina Rogeri Danielis, 1660. [16], 256pp. With blank A1. 12mo. A handsome and well preserved copy in contemporary blind-ruled calf, the lightest of rubbing to extremities, slight mark to upper board. Printer's waste from a theological work (running title 'Loci communes') used as paste downs, since sprung, revealing the early ink inscription of 'Hugo Nanncy' and 'U3' shelf mark to verso of upper board. The first British printing of two works by French philosopher Pierre Gassendi (1592-1665), which, as the title of the first work indicates, were almost certainly issued together; the second of which sought to replace the dominant philosophical system of Aristotle with the logic, physics and ethics of Epicurus. Gassendi's Philosophiae Epicuri syntagma (Lyon, 1649) had been gaining traction in philosophical circles in Commonwealth and Protectorate England, notably finding publication in a free English translation by Walter Charleton (Physiologia Epicuro-Gassendo-Charltoniana: or A fabrick of science natural, upon the hypothesis of atoms, London 1654) and further exposure in Thomas Stanley's History of Philosophy. Demand was evidently sufficient to provoke Roger Daniel's son-in-law John Redmayne to print a second edition in 1668. Outside of British libraries, ESTC locates copies at on … [Click Below for Full Description]

Du Hamel, Jean-Baptiste
Pierre Lamy, 1660. Very rare first edition of the main treatise on astronomy and physics by French priest and scientist, Jean-Baptiste Du Hamel(1624-1706). He was selected as the first secretary of the newly founded French Academy of Sciences in 1666. ***** Two parts in one volume – quarto, contemporary calf with gilt spine. Red speckled edges. Woodcut vignette on title page, woodcut initials, head and tail pieces. Binding a bit rubbed, minor spine cap repair and hinge strengthening. A few pages with offsetting, otherwise remarkably clean and crisp. The text is wonderfully illustrated with numerous woodcut diagrams. A really lovely copy. Near Fine. ***** Donated by Dom Ruffé to the Congregation of the House of St. Lazarus with a gift inscription on the title page. ***** The book is divided into two dedicated sections - the first to light and color and the second to speculative astronomy and geometry. Following these works is an annex under separate pagination that contains three works of Pierre Petit(1617-1687) on the solar eclipse of November 14, 1659, the latitude of Paris, and a system of the world. ***** “Du Hamel was as comfortable in the study of mathematics, astronomy, and other sciences as in theology and philosophy; in this respect he was well placed to act as a bridge between the movement of scientific ideas and those of theology and philosophy Given the panoramic nature of his intellectual training and pursuits this highly cultivated priest refused to be committed to any all-embracing, exclusive philosophical system.”(Science and Social Status: The Members of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frankreich - Lune, Pierre de (Pseud.).
Paris, Pierre David, 1660. 8°. 4 Bll., 364 SS., 17 Bll. Pgt. d. Zt. (etwas braunfleckig, angestaubt, beschabt und bestoßen). Vicaire 542. [Click Below for Full Description]

Forde, Thomas
London: R. and W. Leybourn, for William Grantham at the Black Bear in St. Pauls Church-yard, neer the little North Door, 1660. London: R. and W. Leybourn, for William Grantham at the Black Bear in St. Pauls Church-yard, neer the little North Door, 1660. First separately issued edition of Thomas Forde's collection of pointed anecdotes and pithy maxims, also published as one section of his major work of the Restoration, Virtus Rediviva. Forde's goal was to produce an anthology of the very best examples of ancient and modern wit: "I have laboured to subtract, rather than multiply." From Socrates and Alexander to John Foxe and Anne Boleyn, the selections deal with every aspect of human experience: "men's actions were like notes of musick, sometimes in spaces, and sometimes in lines, sometimes above, and sometimes beneath, and never or seldom straight for any long continuance." Wing F1548A. A near-fine copy, from the famed Macclesfield library. Small octavo, measuring 6 x 3.5 inches: [6], 90. Twentieth-century three-quarter speckled calf, marbled boards, raised bands ruled in gilt, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, all edges stained red. Woodcut headpieces and initials. Engraved bookplate of the Earls of Macclesfield, North Library. Text block cropped close, shaving some page numbers; loss to top corner of D5, affecting a few words; boards lightly rubbed.

Around 1350, Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor organized an expedition into the forests surrounding modern-day Karlovy Vary during a stay in Loket. On the site of a spring, he established a spa called the Horké Lázn_ u Lokte(Hot Spas at Loket). It is located off the Pomeranian coast in the Baltic Sea and belongs to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The island of Rügen is part of the district of Vorpommern-Rügen, with its county seat in Stralsund. The towns on Rügen are: Bergen, Sassnitz, Putbus and Garz. In addition, there are the Baltic seaside resorts of Binz, Baabe, Göhren, Sellin and Thiessow. From the 7th century the West Slavic Rani built an empire on Rügen and the neighbouring coast between Recknitz and Ryck. It decidedly affected the history of the Baltic Sea area and the surrounding Obodritic and Liutician occupied mainland for the next few centuries. In 1168, the Danish king, Valdemar I, and his army commander and advisor, Bishop Absalon of Roskilde destroyed the Svetovid temple in the hillfort at Cape Arkona, ending both the territorial and religious autonomy of the Rani; their former monarchs became Danish princes of Rügen. Under Danish rule the Principality of Rugia changed its character. Danish monasteries were established. The Slavic cultural element disappeared, mostly due to the lack of their own Slavic church structures, so that the Rani were absorbed in the period that followed into the now German-influenced people of Rügen. After the death of the last Slav prince, Wizlaw III, in 1325, the principality … [Click Below for Full Description]
