Hendrik Bary Gouda 1640 - 1707
Bulino, 1660 circa, firmato in basso a destra "HBary Sculptor". Engraving, 1660 circa, signed bottom right "HBary Sculptor". After a fresco by Raphael. A very good example, printed on contemporary laid paper with "foolscape with five-pointed coolare" (Ash & Fletcher n. 19, pp. 97-110) watermak, some ink stains, otherwise in very good condition. The print reproduces, in reverse, a fresco by Raphael in Villa Farnesina - Loggia Psyche. In these incision the figure of Cupid is missing Not listed in the repertories. non descritta/undescribed.

Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto" (Genova 1616 - Mantova 1670)
1660. This archive contains the last remnants of the last Meeting House of the Religious Society of Friends in Barbados. Barbados was one of the main ports for trade and travel between Britain and her American Colonies in the seventeenth century. As such, early Quaker missionaries all passed through Barbados, including Elizabeth Hooton and Joan Brocksop in 1661, Ann Robinson and Oswell Heritage in 1662, and George Fox, William Edmundson, Elizabeth Hooton in 1671. George Rofe, an important Quaker traveller, described Barbados then as 'the nursery of the truth' . The first Quakers to land on American soil, Mary Fisher and Ann Austen in 1656, came from England by way of Barbados, and spent some six months there before proceeding onwards. Friends wishing to reach any part of the American coast sailed most frequently for Barbados before reshipping onwards. They generally spent some weeks or months propagating their doctrines in the island as well as paying visits to Jamaica, Antigua, Nevis, and Bermuda. As she left, Mary Fisher wrote back to her friends in England: "Here is many convinced and many desire to know the way." The growth of Quaker communities in the Caribbean Basin Plantations, especially in Barbados, was followed with keen interest by English Friends. It shows in that as early as 1657 George Fox addressed an epistle "to Friends beyond the sea that have Blacks and Indian Slaves." In it he points out that God has made all nations of one blood and that the gospel is preached to every creature under heaven, "which is the power that giveth liberty and freedom and is glad … [Click Below for Full Description]

Smith, John.
London, Printed by J. Fletcher, for W. Morden ... Cambridge 1660. . 1st Ed. Sm. 4to. liii + [iii] + 526pp. + [i]. Dec. headpieces and initial letters. Some light browning, rebound in modern speckled calf, gilt lettering to spine. ESTC R17087. ‘Each section with divisional title page. With final advertisement leaf. Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), S4117.’ John Smith (1618–1652), philosopher. ‘... Smith never realized the promise evident in his one published work, his posthumously published [above work]. This was not prepared for press by Smith, but was edited by John Worthington from papers he left behind at his death. It was Worthington who presented the collection as a set of discourses on ten different topics: ranging from the brief discussions 'Of atheism' and 'Of superstition', to the more philosophical 'Of the existence and nature of God' and 'Of the true way or method of attaining divine knowledge'. The most extensive discourse is that on prophecy. This collection could be described as a summary statement of Cambridge Platonism as a religious philosophy. Smith's emphasis on practical Christianity, his high valuation of reason as an instrument of faith, and his optimistic view of human nature are all features of the tolerant divinity that he inherited from his teacher, Whichcote, and shared with the other Cambridge Platonists. Like them, Smith exhibited the non-dogmatic temper and philosophical openness of mind of his teacher that stands in striking contrast to the austere doctrinaire puritanism that held sway in the 1640s ... The book is a masterpiece of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Russia - Joan Blaeu, c. 1660
1660. 17th-CENTURY RUSSIA 'Tabula Russiae.'. Copper engraving of Russia with armorial cartouche, large inset plan of Moscow and smaller inset view of Archangelsk. Published by Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam around 1660, as part of a Latin edition of his Atlas Maior. Colured by a later hand. Size (print): approx. 43 x 55 cm. The Atlas Maior in its various editions was the largest atlas ever published. It was justly famed ('the greatest and finest atlas ever published' - Koeman) for its production values, its high typographic standard, the quality of its engraving, ornamentation, binding and colouring. Blaeu's atlas frequently served as the official gift of the Dutch Republic to princes and other authorities. It is one of the most lavish and highly prized of all seventeenth century illustrated books. The maps are embellished in the Baroque style, and many rank among the most beautiful ever made. This map of Russia, originally part of the Atlas Maior volume II, is based on Hessel Gerritsz' important 1614 map of Russia, which he compiled from manuscripts brought back by Isaac Massa. Massa was a wealthy Dutch grain trader and the envoy to Moscow during the reign of Boris Gudunov. Hessel Gerritsz in turn, was the first exclusive cartographer of the Dutch East India Company and considered one of the foremost Dutch cartographers of the seventeenth century. Price: '2.150,-

World map - Frederick de Wit, 1660
1660. "Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula". Copper engraving made by Frederick de Wit 't Amsterdam in de Calverstraat inde Witte Pascaart 1660, published in De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Wereld of Hendrik Doncker in Amsterdam from 1660 to 1670. With original hand colouring. Size: 47 x 56 cm (plus margins). This was De Wit's first world map. He derived it from the two hemisphere maps from Blaeu's wall map of 1648, reducing them in scale and making some changes. (Bleau's own smaller world map with two hemispheres can be found here.) The upper corners contain northern and southern celestial maps and the lower corners show north and south polar projections. In the bottom center are astronomical diagrams -- a geocentric one on the left and a Copernican one on the right. The top center vignette shows the sun encircled by a zodiacal ring. Between the maps and diagrams are four vignettes with allegorical depictions of the Four Elements (air, fire, earth and water). The map also includes Baroque decorations of garlands of fruit and flowers. A magnificent example of the art of mapmaking, this map is one of only 19 reproduced in color in Rodney Shirley's major scholarly work on world maps of the 15th to 17th centuries. In accompanying text, the author states that "[e]specially when richly coloured, De Wit's map is one of the most decorative standard-size maps of the time and it is much less commonly found than his three other atlas world maps." Frederick de Wit (1630-1706) was founder of a prominent map publishing firm in 17th century Amsterdam, the golden age of Dutch cartography. The De Wi … [Click Below for Full Description]
