SANSON Nicolas sr.
[1660]. Third edition (?); quarto (238 x 172 mm); double-page engraved title and dedication, thirteen double-page engraved maps in original outline colour. 19th century half cat?s paw calf over tan cloth, red morocco label and gilt titling to spine. Spine rubbed, joints spilt, back board coming loose. Paris : Pierre Mariette, Nicolas Sanson sr. (1660-1667), the ?father of French cartography?, became interested in geography at a very early age; he was appointed Geographe Ordinaire du Roy in 1630. His most famous publication is Cartes Generales de Toutes les Parties du Monde ., 1658, a folio world atlas which was the first significant world atlas to rival Dutch supremacy. Sanson also issued atlases of the four known continents, Africa, Asia, America and Europe, in quarto format, to offer a less expensive option to prospective purchasers. L?Europe was published in 1648, edited by Nicolas jr. (1628-1648). This was to be his only major production. Protecting his patron on the second day of the journée des Barricades, 27th August, 1648, he was shot and killed. Pastoureau records four editions; this seems intermediate between (B) and (C), with the text on the recto (only) of a double-page, as the third edition, but without Mariette?s colophon at the end. Reference: cf. Sanson VII B [1660] & VII C 1665. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1660. ?It is the ring-tailed lemur (Lemur Catta Linn.). Quite well done? (Th.). Sitting to the right on a boulder, resting against another one. Presumably after Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753). Etching with engraving. Inscribed: CEBVS capite Vulpino. / a Londen. / N.o 9. / J. El. Ridinger fec. et excud. Aug. Vindel., otherwise German-French as above. 12? × 8? in (31.3 × 21.0 cm). Th. & Schwarz 549. ? Large crowned watermark with typographic pendant FAI / WANGEN. ? With a sheet size of 17? × 11? in (45.5 × 30 cm). perceptibly exceeding that of the Earl of Fife with Schwerdt with but 16? × 11 in (41.5 × 28 cm). and thusly with margins above and below 2?-3? (5.7-8.1), laterally 1?-1? in (3.9-4.8 cm). wide. ? Small smoothed pleat at the white right top corner. Lastly in the white top margin still both the two little holes of the original stitching of the installments. ? Sheet 9 of the set of Ten Plates Monkeys or Animals yet related to them published without title sheet,?destined to be colored and to follow Ridinger?s large work?, for the 1st edition ? as here ? generally only black impressions hold true. Thienemann?s further remark that the plates had been ?reduced later ? and incorporated slightly modified (partly with respect to the caption, too) into the colored plates? not correct and presumably just superficially based on the equal number of 10 plates each. Actually in the Colored Animal Kingdom, not completed anymore by the father himself, the depictions themselves are considerably smaller to provide more space for the caption, while the plates are of almost the same size. [1] leaf (Frontispiece), [6], 32, 7, [185]pp. Contemporary 3/4 calf over decorative paper covered boards, with gold lettering and tooling to spine. Engraved frontispiece. Title page in red and black lettering. Publisher's device on title. Decorative headpieces. An unusual collection of Royalist rhymes, satires and so on, "The Rump, or A Collection of Songs and Ballads" is an expanded edition of "The importance of Ratts Rhimed to Death," published earlier in 1660, the year of the Restoration. This book is the first miscellany in English to be consciously devoted to street ballads, while the uniformly topical and political nature of the satires of which it is comprised marks it as the first true collection of what was shortly to become an immensely popular form of miscellany, the anthologized 'poems on affairs of state'" (Mark McDayter, online edition of Rump: An exact collection, http://ett.arts.uwo.ca/rump/site/welcome.html). For more information, see D. Wing's "A Short Title Catalogue," 2nd edition, 1972 (4850B). Binding rubbed along spine and joints. Ex-library bookplate on inside of front cover. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.

HOWELL (James)
London, Printed by J[ohn]. G[rismond] for Samuel Thomson at the Bishops head in St. Pauls Church-yard. 1660. London, Printed by J[ohn]. G[rismond] for Samuel Thomson at the Bishops head in St. Pauls Church-yard. 1660. FIRST EDITION. Folio, 328 x 205 mms., pp. [x], 4, [312], 24, 10, [8], 28, [8], 24, [6], 32, [8], 40, including half-title, engraved allegorical frontispiece (waterstained on verso), title-page in red and black, bound in mid to late 18th century calf, gilt border on covers, spine gilt in compartments, black leather label; lower front joint wormed, corners worn, some nicks and scratches to binding, but a very good copy. Howell's fulsome dedication to Charles II, claiming himself to be, "among those myriads of Loyall Soules who rejoyce at your Majesties return, I am one who upon the knee of a panting heart, as well as those of the Body doth send up flaming oblations of thankfullnesse to just Heven for thie Great and seasonable Blessing...." Howell (?1594 - 1666) began his career working in a glass factory, but later found employment in various capacities with the aristocracy. An industrious and gifted scholar and linguist, he spent some time on the continent and seemed to be reading 18 hours a day. His loyalty to Charles II led to his imprisonment in 1643, so the purple prose dedication probably marks the relief he felt when he was released. THe present work "as supported by Bulstrode Whitelocke, a frequent correspondent and reader of Howell's works from 1654 until the Restoration" (Diary of Bulstrode Whitelocke, 50; ODNB). In that ODNB articles, D. R … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Paraguay] [Cardenas, Bernardino de] Carrillo, Alonso
1660. Madrid. Folio, (300 x 215 mm). 8 pp. Unbound. Uncut, contemporary foliation in manuscript; outer margin darkened.- Rare imprint on the events following Bernardino de Cardenas´ dispute with the Jesuits of Paraguay.By right, the Bishop of Paraguay had authority over the Jesuits at the head of the missions or Reductions –mainly located within the area of jurisdiction of the Bishop-, however, due to the natural difficulties in exercising these right, the Bishop conferred power to the superiors of the missions. C.1640, this normal flow of jurisdiction was harshly interrupted with the actions of Bernardino de Cardenas and only enhanced by a memorial written by Julian de Pedraza accusing the Bishop of generating a general dislike for the Jesuits by creating false charges and even provoking attacks upon them; as consequence, his actions, general dislike and antipathy for the Jesuits brought confusion to the region and nearly ruined the Reductions. In this imprint, Carrillo praises Cardenas, clearly bias with an anti-Jesuit position, and speaks about San Diego y Villalon´s (after having been made prisoner by British pirates) support of the Bishop, as well as the academics from the schools of Salamanca and Seville.

SCHENK, Petrus
Amsterdam: Petrus Schenk. unbound. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. 21" x 25".Rare map of the Polish empire in the early 18th century in high detail. Spans from Posnan in the west to Smolensko in the east, and from what is modern day Estonia in the north, down to the Kingdom of Hungary in the south. Worm holes and stains to margins. Petrus Schenk (c.1660-1711) was a German engraver and cartographer. He began his training in Amsterdam in the art of mezzotint and soon began working closely with Gerard Valck. The two took advantage of the bustling cartographic trade in the city and quickly expanded their business from portraits and prints into maps and globes. In 1700, Schenk grew the business further by moving to Leipzig, Germany and opening a shop. As his sons and grandson returned to the Netherlands to become active engravers as well, the Schenk firm developed into one of the best-known publishing houses in 18th-century Amsterdam. This map attests to Schenk's prolific production and skill in both cartographic artistry and business.

JANSSON, Jan.
Amsterdam, c.1660, blank verso. Coloured. 440 x 510mm. Some restoration at top centerfold. A decorative map of Arabia, first published 1658. Mecca and Medina are marked reasonably accurately but the rest of the interior is quite imaginative. The Persian Gulf coastline is also vague: Bahrain is marked inaccurately, despite their pearl fishery being known to the Romans and there is no Qatari peninsula. Jan Janssonius produced this detailed map of the Arabian Peninsula which was divided in three Roman Provinces: ' Arabia Felix', 'Arabia Petraea' and 'Arabia Deserta'. Because of the lack of new information, Jansson had to rely on the old Ptolemaic names for his new map. 'Arabia Felix', Latin for 'Loyal Arabia' covers the majority of the Peninsula, even though the term relates to the comparatively fertile regions of present day Asir and Yemen. 'Arabia Petraea' (Stony Arabia) is located in North West Arabia and was a frontier province of imperial Rome. 'Arabia Deserta' (Desert Arabia) in Latin meant the desert interior, which was populated by nomadic tribes who frequently invaded richer lands. Jansson has placed 'Arabia Deserta' in a smaller area in the North east; he probably did this to balance the descriptions of the other regions depicted with scores of rivers; most of the interior drawn on the map was imaginary. Published in Jansson's 'Atlas Novus' TIBBETTS: 101.

Robert May
ont> R W for Nath Brooke: London. Ont> R W for Nath Brooke: London, 1660 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A very scarce first edition copy of this seventeenth century household manual. This work was the first to group recipes logically into sections and made early use of the potato and turkey which had been imported to Europe from the Americas. This Restoration era cookery book was written by Robert May, a professional chef with both French and English training. This work has recipes for soups and broths in addition to sweet and savoury pies. He includes recipes and customs from as early as the Middle Ages and embraces other European food trends such as French bisque and Italian brodo. Here May has produced the first cook-book that separated recipes into sections. There are sections on boiling, beef, roasting, puddings, fruit, eggs and more. Illustrated, with many vignette woodcuts indicating the cooking equipment. Historian Kate Colquhoun in her work 'Taste: The Story of Britain through its Cooking' notes that this work was the first to be illustrated with 'woodcuts of spectacular pastry work that would set the standard for the next hundred years'. With the bookplate of one Josephine Dockar Drysdale. Estc No. R12789. Collated, signature A has 6 leaves, is lacking the frontispiece and A8. Andreas CELLARIUS (Neuhausen, c. 1596 - Hoorn, 1665)
1660. "Magnifica carta astronomica tratta da "" Atlas Coelestis Seu Harmonia Macrocosmica ..."" del Cellarius, il più importante atlante celeste mai pubblicato. Edizione pubblicata da Gerard Valk e Pieter Schenk nel 1708. Incisione in rame, magnifica coloritura coeva, piccolo strappo restaurato al margine inferiore, complessivamente in ottimo stato di conservazione." Finely executed celestial chart illustrating the motions of both the upright sphere (the equatorial co-ordinate system) and the oblique sphere (the ecliptic co-ordinate system); the celestial and terrestrial longitudes; and the influences of the stars, from the 1708 Valk & Schenk edition of Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica Andreas Cellarius was born in 1596 in Neuhausen and educated in Heidelberg. He emigrated to Holland in the early 17th Century and in 1637 moved to Hoorn, where he became the rector of the Latin School. Cellarius' best known work is his Harmonia Macrocosmica, first issued in 1660 by Jan Jansson, as a supplement to Jansson's Atlas Novus. The work consists of a series of Celestial Charts begun by Cellarius in 1647 and intended as part of a two volume treatise on cosmography, which was never issued. Cellarius' charts are the most sought after of celestial charts, blending the striking imagery of the golden age of Dutch Cartography with contemporary scientific knowledge. The present examples come from the Valk & Schenk edition of Cellarius' atlas, which is unchanged from the 1661 edition. The 1660 and 1661 editions can be distinguished by the inclusion of a plate number in the lower right … [Click Below for Full Description]
