?Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula?. Copper engraving made by Frederick de Wit ?t Amsterdam in de Calverstraat inde Witte Pascaart 1660, published in De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Wereld of Hendrik Doncker in Amsterdam from 1660 to 1670. With original hand colouring. Size: 47 x 56 cm (plus margins). This was De Wit?s first world map. He derived it from the two hemisphere maps from Blaeu?s wall map of 1648, reducing them in scale and making some changes. (Bleau's own smaller world map with two hemispheres can be found here.) The upper corners contain northern and southern celestial maps and the lower corners show north and south polar projections. In the bottom center are astronomical diagrams -- a geocentric one on the left and a Copernican one on the right. The top center vignette shows the sun encircled by a zodiacal ring. Between the maps and diagrams are four vignettes with allegorical depictions of the Four Elements (air, fire, earth and water). The map also includes Baroque decorations of garlands of fruit and flowers.A magnificent example of the art of mapmaking, this map is one of only 19 reproduced in color in Rodney Shirley?s major scholarly work on world maps of the 15th to 17th centuries. In accompanying text, the author states that ?[e]specially when richly coloured, De Wit?s map is one of the most decorative standard-size maps of the time and it is much less commonly found than his three other atlas world maps.?Frederick de Wit (1630-1706) was founder of a prominent map publishing firm in 17th century Amsterdam, the golden age of Dutch cartography. PIETRO ARETINO.
[Jean Elzevier], Stampati in Cosmopoli, [Leiden:], 1660. THE EARLIEST SURVIVING PRINTED WORK OF PORNOGRAPHIC LITERATURE. THE NOTORIOUS PUTTANA ERRANTE. Octavo (153 × 95mm.), three parts in one, pp. 541, [3]; 54, [2]. A-2L8, Aa-Cc8, Dd4 (2L8 and Dd4 blank). Roman and italic type. Titles of first two parts, the Ragionamenti, with typographical ornaments; La Puttana Errante with half-title and title with no bibliographical information, small floriated woodcut initials, grotesque tail pieces, typographical ornaments. In fine contemporary vellum over thin paper boards, yapp edges. Very rare marginal spotting in places. Small cracks to upper joint. A fine copy, crisp and clean. FIRST EDITION, very rare and a fine copy, of the earliest surviving printed work of pornographic literature. "The first imaginative prose work that deals directly and exclusively with physical sexual satisfaction" (Foxon p. 27). THE TRUE FIRST EDITION Two separate editions of Aretino's Ragionamenti were published by the Elzevier press, both with a new text appended, the Puttana Errante. Willems convincingly argues in his lengthy descriptions of this work, that of the two separate editions, the first was printed at Leiden by Jean Elzevier, and the second was printed eight years later by Daniel Elzevier at Amsterdam. The first edition of La Puttana Errante, in 54 pages, was added at the end of some, but by no means all, copies of the first printing of the Ragionamenti. It was however clearly intended to be an integral part of the first edition as it is printed on identical paper, using the same type, with th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Russiae, Vulgo Moscovia dictae, Pars OccidentalisMap of Russia with original hand colouring. Size 49,1 x 38,9 cm. Published by Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam around 1660, as part his world famous Atlas Maior.A finely engraved depiction of the area from Estonia to Moscow. The map is very decorative, with pictorial topography, wildlife and a scene of men hunting bears in the upper part of the map. The decorative cartouche is flanked with moose and reindeer. Also this map is based on the travel journal of Isaac Massa from 1610.Isaac Massa (1586 - 1643) was a Dutch grain trader, traveller and diplomat, the envoy to Muscovy, author of memoirs witnessing the Time of Troubles and the maps of Eastern Europe and Siberia. Massa's experience in and knowledge of Muscovy transformed him into a Dutch ?Kremlinologist??.Massa is credited with five published maps of Russia and its provinces, the last ones compiled around 1633, and two maps of Moscow city. Retrieving original muscovite maps could have been dangerous for Massa himself and fatal for his Russian sources. Massa's rendition of the Siberian coast represented an advance in geography and for decades remained the only map of this region. It was subsequently copied by Dutch publishers Gerard Mercator and Henricus Hondius, Jan Janssonius and Willem Blaeu.Blaeu's Atlas Major in its various editions was the largest atlas ever published. It was justly famed (?the greatest and finest atlas ever published?? - Koeman) for its production values, its high typographic standard, the quality of its engraving, ornamentation, binding and colouring. LEURECHON, HENRION, MYDORGE
Paris, Cardin Besongne, 1660. Rousseurs. Coiffe rognée, première charnière fendillée. *****. In-8. Collation : (16), 416 pp. Basane brune, dos à nerfs orné, tranches marbrées. (Reliure de l'époque.).

[ZACHARIE DE LISIEUX, Ange Lambert].
Paris: Thierry and Barbin, 1660. Octavo, with a fine large engraved folding bird's-eye-view map; contemporary vellum. First edition: a witty allegorical satire in the form of an imaginary voyage to a Jansenist society, by the Capuchin theologian Zacharie de Lisieux (1591 or 1596-1661).Around 1640 Jansen had controversially attempted to reassert the Augustinian doctrine of original sin and thus the necessity for grace: the Jansenist movement quickly became associated with moral rigour. It was supported by Pascal in his Lettres Provinciales, compelling Innocent X to issue the 1653 bull 'With Occasion' denouncing the movement.Published only seven years later, the Relation du Pays de Jansenie uses some very broad satire to support Pope Innocent's proclamation, denouncing the writings and influence of Jansen as synonymous with libertinage, despair and Calvinism. Thus, the people 'have very hard heads and thick skulls. Some have two hearts, a condition occasionally advanced as an explanation for their notorious insincerity' and their philosophers 'do not recognize the existence of common sense' (Manguel & Guadalupi). Detested by their neighbours, they show a predilection for secrecy, espionage, insincerity and superficiality. It is prefaced by some of the classic devices of the imaginary voyage, including a wonderfully insincere apology for the lack of detail, for which he can hardly be held responsible: he was in a great hurry and, after all, the public really only like short books. Moreover, Zacharie de Lisieux gives crucial importance to the map he reproduces which, he humbly a … [Click Below for Full Description]

"This map of Ukraine, issued by Jan Jansson in about 1657, is one of the earliest maps to include the name Ukraine in the title of a printed map, following shortly after the Treaty of Zboriv in 1649, although derived largely from Beauplan's maps. printed map, following shortly after the Treaty of Zboriv in 1649, although derived largely from Beauplan's maps. The name Ukraine was popularized in the west by Guillaume La Vasseur de Beauplan's Description d'Ukraine, first published in Rouen in 1651 (in an edition of 100 copies) under a different title, with the named changed as above in the 1660 edition and subsequent editions published in French (1661, 1662, 1663) Latin (1662), Dutch (1664), Spanish (1665 and 1672) and English (1680). The work described Ukraine as several provinces of the Kingdom of Poland lying between the borders of Muscovy and the frontiers of Transylvania. Beauplan, a military engineer, had spent a significant period of time constructing fortresses in the region in the 1630s. In 1650, his map entitled Delineatio Specialis et Accurata Ukrainae, showed the palatinates of Kyiv, Bratslav, Podilia, Volhynia and part of Rus (Pokutia). Giacomo LAURO (1561-1645/50)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Pacco 3
