Finely executed celestial chart illustrating the motions of both the upright sphere (the equatorial co - ordinate system) and the oblique sphere (the ecliptic co - ordinate system); the celestial and terrestrial longitudes; and the influences of the stars, from the 1708 Valk & Schenk edition of Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica Andreas Cellarius was born in 1596 in Neuhausen and educated in Heidelberg. He emigrated to Holland in the early 17th Century and in 1637 moved to Hoorn, where he became the rector of the Latin School. Cellarius' best known work is his Harmonia Macrocosmica, first issued in 1660 by Jan Jansson, as a supplement to Jansson's Atlas Novus. The work consists of a series of Celestial Charts begun by Cellarius in 1647 and intended as part of a two volume treatise on cosmography, which was never issued. Cellarius' charts are the most sought after of celestial charts, blending the striking imagery of the golden age of Dutch Cartography with contemporary scientific knowledge. The present examples come from the Valk & Schenk edition of Cellarius' atlas, which is unchanged from the 1661 edition. The 1660 and 1661 editions can be distinguished by the inclusion of a plate number in the lower r … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tughra'i, al Husayn ibn 'Ali.
Paris, R. Soubret, 1660. 8vo. 80 pp. 18th-century blind-ruled brown calf, blindstamped arms of William Stirling Maxwell on the upper cover and his blind cipher on the lower cover. Spine and vertical title label gilt; turn-ins gilt. Marbled flyleaves. All edges red. Green silk marker. First edition in a western language of the celebrated autobiographical lament of the poet, royal secretary, and soldier Al-Tughra'i, who rose to Vizier only to be beheaded. His elegy, "Lamiyyat al-'Adjam", is probably the first major work of Arabic poetry published in the west. The other significant early Arabic work here contains an offering of proverbs selected from the "Exalted Aphorisms" of the fourth Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib (601-661), the only person born in Mecca's sacred Kaaba sanctuary, cousin and son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad. - The editor and Royal Interpreter for Arabic, Pierre Vattier (1623-47), translated these pieces into French for their stylistic elegance and textual importance. He held the Chair of Arabic at the Collège de France from 1658 until his death and contributed an extended opening essay on Arabic prosody, here in its only edition. - Front joint cracked, extremeties slightly bumped; title remargined at lower edge. Altogether a fine copy. Provenance: from the collection of the proverb bibliographer P. A. Gratet-Duplessis (1792-1853), recording the date of his acquisition (Lyon, 1828) and his paid price on the final flyleaf. In the sale of his library in 1856, the volume was described as a "joli exemplaire de ce curieux et rare petit volume" (p. 156, no. 969). A sl … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Historische Künstlergraphik. Sepiazeichnung auf feinen Bütten, um 1660. Von Jan de Bisschop. 15,4 x 9,7 cm (Darstellung ) / 22,1 x 15,5 cm (Blatt). Insgesamt gut erhalten. Jan de Bisschop (1628 Amsterdam - 1671 Den Haag). Genannt Johannes Episcopius. Niederländischer Maler, Radierer und Kupferstecher. Wurde von Bartholomeus Breenbergh im Zeichnen unterrichtet. 1656 Gründungsmitglied der Akademie Confrerie Pictura in Den Haag. GASSENDI, Pierre
Officina Rogeri Danielis, Londini, [i.e. London], 1660. [12], 100pp. [Bound with:] GASSENDI, Pierre. Philosophiae epicuri syntagma, Continens Canonicam, Physicam, & Ethicam. Londini, [i.e. London]. Ex officina Rogeri Danielis, 1660. [16], 256pp. With blank A1. 12mo. A handsome and well preserved copy in contemporary blind-ruled calf, the lightest of rubbing to extremities, slight mark to upper board. Printer's waste from a theological work (running title 'Loci communes') used as paste downs, since sprung, revealing the early ink inscription of 'Hugo Nanncy' and 'U3' shelf mark to verso of upper board. The first British printing of two works by French philosopher Pierre Gassendi (1592-1665), which, as the title of the first work indicates, were almost certainly issued together; the second of which sought to replace the dominant philosophical system of Aristotle with the logic, physics and ethics of Epicurus. Gassendi's Philosophiae Epicuri syntagma (Lyon, 1649) had been gaining traction in philosophical circles in Commonwealth and Protectorate England, notably finding publication in a free English translation by Walter Charleton (Physiologia Epicuro-Gassendo-Charltoniana: or A fabrick of science natural, upon the hypothesis of atoms, London 1654) and further exposure in Thomas Stanley's History of Philosophy. Demand was evidently sufficient to provoke Roger Daniel's son-in-law John Redmayne to print a second edition in 1668. Outside of British libraries, ESTC locates copies at only six institutions (AAS, APS, Chicago, Huntington, Library Company of Philadelphia and UCLA). ES … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fletcher, Henry.
printed by J. Cottrel, for William Roybould at the Unicorn, and Henry Fletcher at the three Gilt Cups in St Paul's Church-yard, 1660. Published anonymously and often attributed to Fletcher and occasionally to William Raybould, this is one of three editions printed in 1660, the first year of the work's printing. It sometimes later appeared under the variant title A Full View of the Life and Actions (military and civil) of Oliver Cromwel. In addition to telling of Cromwell's political life and his wars in Ireland, Scotland, and England, this offers a section on the Protectorate that has much to say about his policies and military actions in the Caribbean, especially the taking of Jamaica from Spain. The title-page is printed in black and red and this copy retains the vertical half-title on A1r, "O. Cromwel's Life." Provenance: Pacific School of Religion (properly deaccessioned).

He used his time diligently, beginning in Rudbeck's house the works later published as Bibliotheca botanica (1736), Critica botanica (1737), Genera plantarum (1737), Classes plantarum (1738), ... Thus by the age of 24 Linnaeus had laid the foundations for all his later work" ( The Linnaean correspondence ). During this time Rudbeck convinced Linnaeus to go and do research in Lapland himself as from a natural history point of view this region was almost completely unknown. This expedition led to his Flora Lapponica (1737) in which Linnaeus' ideas about nomenclature and classificat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Willem Janszoon Blaeu also abbreviated to Willem Jansz. Blaeu, was a Dutch cartographer, atlas maker and publisher. Blaeu was born at Uitgeest or Alkmaar. As the son of a well-to-do herring salesman, he was destined to succeed his father in the trade, but his interests lay more in Mathematics and Astronomy. Between 1594 and 1596 as a student of the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe he qualified as an instrument and globe maker. In 1600 he discovered the second ever variable star now known as P Cygni. Once he returned to Holland, he made country maps and world globes, and as he possessed his own printing works, he was able to regularly produce country maps in an atlas format, some of which appeared in the Atlas Novus published in 1635. In 1633 he was appointed map-maker of the East Indian Company. He was also an editor and published works of Willebrord Snell, Descartes, Adriaan Metius, Roemer Visscher, Gerhard Johann Vossius, Barl … [Click Below for Full Description]
