HOMER - John OGILBY (1600-1676)
printed by Thomas Roycroft, to be had at the Author's House, London, 1660. Letterpress title in red and black. Engraved frontispiece, engraved portraits of Ogilby and Charles II, engraved statue of Homer and 48 (of 49) plates engraved by W. Hollar and others after Cleyn and others. Lacks plate illustrating Book 6, verse 340. Contemporary red morocco, expertly rebacked to style retaining the five central compartments of the original spine, marbled endpapers. Provenance: S.P. (initials in gilt on the spine) First edition of Ogilby's lavishly illustrated edition of Homer's Iliad, among the most beautiful editions ever printed. John Ogilby began his professional life a far cry from the world of publishing, as an apprentice to a dancing master. Having no formal education, he began learning Latin in his forties with the help of members of the University of Cambridge whom he had befriended. In 1649, having had some success at a young age with creating his own verse, he attempted a translation of Virgil. Meeting with a positive response, he turned his study to Greek so that he could translate Aesop and Homer. Beyond simple translations, his editions of such classics include significant marginal annotations, synthesizing previous scholarship. However, the common thread among his works, and the principal reason for his success in his lifetime and beyond, are the numerous illustrations which adored his works. The illustrated folio editions of such classics were a new and welcome addition to the mid-17th century English book market and led to the larger more expansive geographical work … [Click Below for Full Description]

JUSTINIANUS;

[GRIMSTON, Sir Harbottle]
London, Edward Husband and Tho. Newcomb, 1660. 4to, 8pp, a little age-browned, recently well bound in quarter calf gilt. A very good copy. First edition. Wing G. 2043. Thomason II, p.333. An obsequious speech to King Charles II a few months after the Restoration of the monarchy in England. Grimston had been appointed to the council of state on the abdication of Richard Cromwell in 1659: was made Speaker of the Convention Parliament in 1660, and was a member of the commission which tried the regicides. From 1660 to 1685 he was master of the Rolls. His speech of 29 August 1660 is soaked in extremes of patriotism. 'So soon as Your Majesty set your foot upon your English shore, our prison was turned into a paradise of pleasure, and the whole nation fill'd with joy, and love, and peace.'

Andreas CELLARIUS
Amsterdam, 1660. "Magnifica carta astronomica tratta da " Atlas Coelestis Seu Harmonia Macrocosmica " del Cellarius, il più importante atlante celeste mai pubblicato. Edizione pubblicata da Gerard Valk e Pieter Schenk nel 1708. Incisione in rame, magnifica coloritura coeva, piccolo strappo restaurato al margine inferiore, complessivamente in ottimo stato di conservazione." Finely executed celestial chart illustrating the motions of both the upright sphere (the equatorial co-ordinate system) and the oblique sphere (the ecliptic co-ordinate system); the celestial and terrestrial longitudes; and the influences of the stars, from the 1708 Valk & Schenk edition of Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica Andreas Cellarius was born in 1596 in Neuhausen and educated in Heidelberg. He emigrated to Holland in the early 17th Century and in 1637 moved to Hoorn, where he became the rector of the Latin School. Cellarius' best known work is his Harmonia Macrocosmica, first issued in 1660 by Jan Jansson, as a supplement to Jansson's Atlas Novus. The work consists of a series of Celestial Charts begun by Cellarius in 1647 and intended as part of a two volume treatise on cosmography, which was never issued. Cellarius' charts are the most sought after of celestial charts, blending the striking imagery of the golden age of Dutch Cartography with contemporary scientific knowledge. The present examples come from the Valk & Schenk edition of Cellarius' atlas, which is unchanged from the 1661 edition. The 1660 and 1661 editions can be distinguished by the inclusion of a plate number in the lower … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blaeu, Willem.
[Amsterdam]: , c1660. Large double page map (22" x 19 1/2"), some coloring, large cartouche in lower left corner. Unclear when coloring was done, some expert repairs at fold, ample margins, some minor soiling and browning; otherwise very good. Nice impression. Included in his body of work was a wonderful series of county maps. This map features an inset of Nuremburg and shows the surrounding countryside. The map is decorated with a large title cartouche and a smaller text cartouche. Van De Gohm p. 104-106.
