[FERMANEL DE FAVERY, Luc (editor)].
Cordier, Indosinica, col. 827; ICCU 024 167; cf. Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 239-240, 385. First and only Italian translation of a work on the French mission to Siam, Cochinchina, Cambodia and Tonkin, originally written in French. It contains the story of three French Jesuits who left Paris around 1660 to go as missionaries to the Far East. One of them died on the journey, but the other two, Louis Chevreuil and Antoine Hainques, made it to Southeast Asia. Chevreuil arrived in 1664 in Siam, and within five months he traveled to Cochinchina, where he had to leave due to persecution of Christians, discussed in the second part of the book. Hainques arrived in Cochinchina in 1665. Chevreuil was sent to Cambodia, which is covered in the third part of the book. The book is based on their letters and reports. Each part mentions the journey the missionaries took and the places they visited, giving descriptions of Mosambique, the islands Madagascar, Réunion and Cape Verde and more. Some minor foxing throughout, the first two leaves and the last leaf slightly soiled, and a small restored tear in the second leaf, otherwise still in good condition.

(c. late 17th century). Hand-painted miniature portrait with five mica overlays, all in a case mimicking a Saxon thaler coin. The case opens to reveal a full-body portrait of a finely-dressed man and woman, as well as a delicately rendered portrait of a young woman. Both are touched with metallic silver paint. The fashion in the paintings, with the off-the-shoulder dresses and the shapes of the sleeves and bodices, combined with the looser fit of the menswear, suggests the 1660s, although it is possible that the set was made later. Housed with the portrait are seven hand-painted mica overlays, sometimes called "talcs," that can be used to change the garb of the young woman. Similar to outfitting a paper doll, these transparent mica sheets are laid on top of the master image, and the opaque painted areas superimpose new costumes, hairstyles, and accessories on the figure below. The bright overlays display a variety of outfits and accessories, including three that show men's clothing. Mica overlays like these first appeared in the mid-seventeenth century as a form of entertainment and continued on into the early 1800s. The portraits were often of royalty, mostly female, and it was not uncommon for overlays of both female and male costuming to be included with the female portraits. Because of the fragile nature of the mica, very few of these transformation games have survived. Housed in a replica of the 1628 thaler, with a portrait of Johann Georg I on one side, and the shield of the Electorate of Saxony under the Holy Roman Empire on the reverse. The coin was originally min … [Click Below for Full Description]

PORTRÄTS: ANTIKE HELDEN:
Kupferstiche v. Gregorius Frentzel n. Marten de Vos b. Paulus Fürst, um 1660, 21,5 x 25,2 Blattgr. 38,8 x 32 (ca. je Blatt) Dresden, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen ( ohne Datierung ). I. an Kaiser Leopold I. schenkte.

HOMER - John OGILBY (1600-1676)
printed by Thomas Roycroft, to be had at the Author's House, London, 1660. Letterpress title in red and black. Engraved frontispiece, engraved portraits of Ogilby and Charles II, engraved statue of Homer and 48 (of 49) plates engraved by W. Hollar and others after Cleyn and others. Lacks plate illustrating Book 6, verse 340. Contemporary red morocco, expertly rebacked to style retaining the five central compartments of the original spine, marbled endpapers. Provenance: S.P. (initials in gilt on the spine) First edition of Ogilby's lavishly illustrated edition of Homer's Iliad, among the most beautiful editions ever printed. John Ogilby began his professional life a far cry from the world of publishing, as an apprentice to a dancing master. Having no formal education, he began learning Latin in his forties with the help of members of the University of Cambridge whom he had befriended. In 1649, having had some success at a young age with creating his own verse, he attempted a translation of Virgil. Meeting with a positive response, he turned his study to Greek so that he could translate Aesop and Homer. Beyond simple translations, his editions of such classics include significant marginal annotations, synthesizing previous scholarship. However, the common thread among his works, and the principal reason for his success in his lifetime and beyond, are the numerous illustrations which adored his works. The illustrated folio editions of such classics were a new and welcome addition to the mid-17th century English book market and led to the larger more expansive geographical work … [Click Below for Full Description]
