Le Blanc, Vincent [Translated by Francis Brooke, Gentleman
Printed for John Starkey at the Miter, 1660. First Edition in English. Leather-bound. [6]407,[10] pages. First edition in English . First published in French, in Paris, 1648. Rebound in 1/4 leather over blue boards, new endpapers. Contrasting (probably original) spine title in gilt on red background, spine decoration and rules in gilt. Corners nudged, cover bright. NOTE: Lacks frontispiece portrait of Le Blanc. OCLC lists only one copy in libraries worldwide. Very Good. Le Blanc -1554-1640] began his lifelong travels at an early age as a stowaway on board a ship owned by his father, bound for Alexandria. "For having ever had an obstinate propensity to travel, when I was scarce advanced out of my infancy, and of judgement, neither for discourse, nor election; I felt though secret, such vigorous motion, that I had not power to resist them: So as without considering why, or to what end, like a man forlorn, I threw myself into this course of perigrinations..."[Author's preface] "The Town of Casubi is faire, great, and of good traffick. The men are of good nature, something tawny, the women very beautiful, and kind, well apparelled, of blith and jollyhumour, their garments are something lacivious, for being cut, and open their skin is seen, and discovered; the aire there is likewise temperare enough." MITELLI, Giuseppe Maria
1660. In folio (mm. 335x245). EXCISE DUTY -
London, Edward Husbands and Thomas Newcomb, 1660. FIRST EDITION. Small folio, pp. [ii], 58, [2]; a little browned in places, very small wormhole to lower margin of the first three leaves; a good copy in 18th-century English calf over thick boards, double fillets ruled in blind; recently re-backed, front board lightly scratched. Printed descriptions of the import duties on wine and merchandise appeared in England as early as 1545. This later edition is one of the first editions after the lifetime of Charles I, who levied the duties without the authority of parliament. Printed at the instigation of the House of Commons, it was intended to be issued with Public General Acts of 1660 12 Cha.II.c.4. and was also issued as part of An exact Collection of all such Acts (1660). Hundreds of goods and their taxes are listed alphabetically and give a good survey of the English foreign trade. Unlike his father, Charles II did not to have the power to decide on which imported items should bear duty. As a keen tennis player, ranked among the top four players in the kingdom, it seems very unlikely that he would have allowed Tennis Balls and Rackets amongst the articles that duty was payable on, if he could have helped it. The duty on tennis balls was 2 per 1,000 [approximately d each] and on Rackets 8d a piece. Tonnage 'was a duty on every ton of wine imported; poundage an ad valorem duty on every pound's worth of merchandise imported or exported . The traditional and usual rate at which tonnage and poundage were fixed was - tonnage 3s. per ton imported, and poundage 1s. on every poun … [Click Below for Full Description]
