(Him Nellen, in XVIIe siècle n° 217, Editer la correspondance de H. Grotius).J. Nádasdy, Ferenc III Graf Fogáras, Hungarian High Judge of the Crown Court, printer, historian, and conspirator (1625-1671).
1660. 6 Imperial documents for members of the Nádasdy and Sermage families (issued by Franz Josef I, Franz I, Maria Theresia, Ferdinand I, and Ferdinand II), 4 portrait miniatures, several photographs and miniature coats-of-arms. Ferenc Nádasdy, a descendant of King Edward I Plantagenet and grandson of Ferenc Nádasdy, the "Black Prince" (1555-1604), who had led many successful campaigns against the Turks but is mainly remembered as husband of the "Blood Countess" Elizabeth Báthory (cf. T. Thorne, Countess Dracula. London 1998), served as Hungarian High Judge of the Crown Court. He was beheaded in Vienna on 30 April 1671 as one of the four principal leaders of the so-called Wesselényi conspiracy. The conspirators had conducted secret talks with France and Turkey for support against Emperor Leopold I; the conflict escalated when they arrested the Hungarian governor Count Rüdiger von Starhemberg. It was Nádasdy's failed attempt to throw off Habsburg rule that brought about Austria's absolutist and repressive regime in Hungary (cf. Encyclopaedia Britannica, s. v. "Wesselény Conspiracy"). Nádasdy's fortune and property were seized by the Crown, but the Emperor is said to have returned most of it to several of his children. Similarly, the change of name originally demanded of the sons was not enacted, as they served in high positions of church and state under their true name (cf. Wurzbach XX, 16). A fine ivory miniature portrait of Ferenc Nádasdy that was passed on within the family until the 19th century bears witness to the uninterrupted veneration of the executed national hero … [Click Below for Full Description]

appresso il Nicolini, 1660. In folio (29 x 21). Frontespizio xilografico figurato; eleganti capilettera e oltre 150 superbe illustrazioni, sempre xilografiche, parte delle quali a tutta pagina. Second edition of this important Architectural treatise from venetian mathematician Rusconi, close friend of Tartaglia and Andrea Palladio. Ex.: Leer, geribde rug met titelschild, platten gemarmerd, hoeken beschadigd, verder goed exemplaar. Bibl. verw.: Haitsma Mulier/Van der Lem 232b; Landwehr 102; Lit.: NNBW VIII, 786; Te Winkel IV, p.450. [Click Below for Full Description]

Longos; Longus; Moll, Petrus, editor
Franeker: Joannis Arcerii. Good with no dust jacket. 1660. Hardcover. The book is in good antiquarian condition. It is a quarto measuring 6.5" x 8", bound in later 1/2 leather with handsome brown cloth boards with old library stamp to the boards. Pagination is [20] 148 (i.e. 140), [2], 121, [21] pp. The title is printed in red and black and there is an old library stamp to the bottom of the title page, as well. The text is in double columns, Greek on the left, Latin on the right, pages have faint red ruling marking the columns. Very occasional light browning or foxing, otherwise clean and unmarked, attractive initials throughout, bound firmly. This is the "most widely held of the scholarly editions" of the great ancient romance, Daphnis and Chloe. It was edited by the Greek scholar Petrus Moll and includes the Greek text with Latin translation - apparently the last Greek edition of the 17th century. In a handsome example dating back to 1660. Longus, sometimes Longos was the author of an ancient Greek novel or romance, Daphnis and Chloe. Nothing is known of his life; it is assumed that he lived on the isle of Lesbos (setting for Daphnis and Chloe) during the 2nd century AD .It has been suggested that the name "Longus" is a misinterpretation of the part of the title of the book, in ancient Greek. Another theory is that it is a misinterpretation of the final word in the best version of the manuscript. If his name was really Longus, he was probably afreedman of some Roman family which bore that name as a cognomen.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
