GOEDAERT, Joannes
Middelburgh, Netherlands: Jaques Fierens, 1660. 2nd vol. only: [24], 288, [16] p. 16 cm. Engraved title page + 42 engraved plates. Full leather. Small notation on lower spine, label missing, chipped spine head. Corners worn. Pages, including plates, are clean and neat. Joannes Goedaert (1617-1668), one of the earliest authors to write about entomology, was also one of the first to write about the insects of the Netherlands. He was one of the first scientists to base his entomological discussions entirely on firsthand observation rather than paraphrasing and citing his predecessors. Perhaps this was because he was not an academic and never attended university; he began his investigations of the natural world from the viewpoint of an artist and craftsman. Goedaert took samples of larvae, raised them to maturity, and recorded the transformation of beetles, flies, wasps, butterflies, and moths, portraying them with a painter's eye for detail. A well-preserved copy of the Dutch language edition. Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ASTRONOMY.
Lyon, 1660. This fascinating scientific manuscript documents the state of scientific knowledge and education in France in the years following Galileo's trial and the Church's prohibition of Copernican theory. The manuscript comprises three parts: Physics (De Corpore naturali inspecie seu Mondo Coelo and Elementis, Generatione and corruptione rerum Meteorisque, etc), Magnetism (Tractatus de Magnete, Historia Magnetis), and Astronomy (of Praxibus Astronomicis, Systema Copernici explicatur, etc). The Astronomy section includes discussions of the world systems, especially that of Copernicus, and the names of Galileo, Gassendi, Kepler, Tycho Brahe, and others appear. The Magnetism section incudes mentions of Gassendi, Maignan, Descartes, Galileo, and Kircher, all of whom made vital contributions to the field in the seventeenth century. The Church declared heliocentrism to be heretical in 1616, and in the following years the Jesuits, especially astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli, were at the forefront of efforts to oppose the theory. This manuscript was evidently written at a Jesuit institution. The writer refers frequently to authors commonly cited by Jesuits. Copernican theory (admitted to be the "ingenious Copernican system") is opposed by the theories of Riccioli. A sample calculation in the Astronomy section states "Hic Lugduni" (here in Lyon). These facts combine to suggest that the manuscript is by a teacher or student at the Jesuit Collège de la Trinité in Lyon. The organization is consistent with university textbooks of the seventeenth century, particularly with the u … [Click Below for Full Description]

In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. Artist: Goos Abraham ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1660 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 42 x 51; - description: chart of the Bretagne; - vita of the artist: Abraham Goos (1590?1643), was a cartographer and map seller. He has published numerous globes, land and sea maps together with Jodocus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius in Antwerp. From 1666, Pieter Goos, his son, also published a number of well produced atlases. He was the first to map Christmas Island, which he labelled "Mony" in his map of the East Indies, published in his 1666 Zee-Atlas (Sea Atlas). His Atlas ofte Water-Weereld (Atlas or Water World) has been cited as one of the best maritime atlases of its time. Another of his fine works was the Oost Indien (East Indies) map published in 1680. Pilot books, which contained a large number of navigation charts, were published by many authors, including Goos. He had a notarized agreement with two others, Jacob Lootsman and Hendrick Doncker, to publish pilot books for navigation along the Mediterranean coast, also covering easterly and westerly navigational routes. These were called the Dutch pilot books and remained valid for the period from 1643 to 1680. Goos was also instrumental in publishing the first pilot book for coastlines outside Europe. A further improvement over the pilot books in Dutch cartography was the publication of sea atlases covering the whole world. Initiated in 1659 by Doncker, the approach was also adopted by Goos from 1666. One of his larger works is named le grand & nouveau miroir ou flamb … [Click Below for Full Description]

Digby, Kenelm.
J.A. and W.Jun. Endter,, Nurnberg, 1660. Collation: [1], )(3-)(5, [6], A-Q12. Lacks first blank. Pagination: (20), 377, (3)p. Modern antique calf, blind fleurons and rules to covers, red title label in gilt, new endpapers, lacks blanks. Rare folding frontispiece with tiny worm track at upper edge of large blank inner margin, no affect to illustration at all. Few contemporary notes, specifically corrections to the text. Would be interesting to know who made them. Some minor foxing and a few light dampstains to front, overall an excellent copy, old bookmark ribbon bound in. Rare first Latin edition, at time of description we locate only one other copy for sale, at a much higher price. Illustrations: With rare folding emblematic frontispiece. ?Digby first described his well-known weapon-salve, or powder of sympathy, in the discourse alleged to have been delivered at Montpellier in 1658. Its method of employment stamps it as the merest quackery. The wound was never to be brought into contact with the powder, which was merely powdered vitriol. A bandage was to be taken from the wound, immersed in the powder, and kept there till the wound healed. Digby gives a fantastic account of the ?sympathetic? principles involved. He says that he learned how to make and apply the drug from a Carmelite who had travelled in the East, and whom he met at Florence in 1622. He first employed it about 1624 to cure James Howell of a wound in his hand, and he adds that James I and Dr. Mayerne were greatly impressed by its efficacy, and that Bacon registered it in his scientific collections. ?
