Francois Poilly I / the elder (1622-1693) was a French draughtsman and engraver from Abbeville, active in Paris. He was a pupil of his father in Abbeville and later in Paris of Pierre Daret. He worked in Rome for 7 years, inspired by the Cornelis Bloemaert, after Italian masters. He was amongst the best engravers of his time and became Royal engraver in 1664. He had many pupils and his family and 16 children developed into a respected family of engravers in Paris. His work is sought after. Sebastien Bourdon (1616-1671) originated from Montpellier. He later worked in Paris and spent several years in Rome. He was appointed as court painter to Christina of Sweden. Condition: Good, given age. Ample margins, some old printer's creases. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Jacob Gole' after 'Cornelis Dusart'. Jacob Gole (ca. 1660-1737) belonged to a group of French refugees who came to the Northern Netherlands in the end of the 17th. Century. He worked in close collaboartion with Cornelis Dusart and specialized in the making of mezzotints. Cornelis Dusart (1660-1704) was a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade. He specialized in highly finished works of art on paper with genre subject matter. Dusart made many prints in mezzotint, which ressemble his washed pen drawings. Condition: Very good, given age. A total of 488 ff. with 382 entries, 54 coloured coats of arms (some raised in gilt), 3 costume illustrations, 2 allegorical illustrations, 1 coloured drawing and 1 lightly coloured pen-and-ink sketch. - I: 219 ff. with 218 entries, including 32 coats of arms (one on the reverse of the loose marbled endpaper), 2 costume illustrations (a fragmented), 1 allegorical illustration and 1 example of musical notes (f. 208). - II: 269 ff. with 164 entries, 22 coats of arms, 1 costume illustration (Livonian peasant couple, f. 220), 1 coloured landscape, 1 allegorical illustration, 1 pen-and-ink drawing, party coloured (2 Chinese costumes, inscribed in Kanji, f. 266). Dos-à-dos binding in full brown calf over wooden boards with owners' initials ("AGKAT" and "IGKLT") within giltstamped borders. Anton Günther Kirchberger (b. 1588, d. after 1652) began this album around the age of 20 (adding a full-page autobiographical introduction in later years). He served as municipal secretary and court clerk in Langensalza (Thuringia) from 1619 to 1632, later entering the services of Duke Wilhelm IV and Duke Ernst I of Saxony-Gotha. The second album, which is bound dos-à-dos with the first, belongs to his son, Johann Günther Kirchberger (1628-1674), consistorial secretary in Gotha. Having no formal education, he began learning Latin in his forties with the help of members of the University of Cambridge whom he had befriended. In 1649, having had some success at a young age with creating his own verse, he attempted a translation of Virgil. Meeting with a positive response, he turned his study to Greek so that he could translate Aesop and Homer. (c. late 17th century). Hand-painted miniature portrait with five mica overlays, all in a case mimicking a Saxon thaler coin. The case opens to reveal a full-body portrait of a finely-dressed man and woman, as well as a delicately rendered portrait of a young woman. Both are touched with metallic silver paint. The fashion in the paintings, with the off-the-shoulder dresses and the shapes of the sleeves and bodices, combined with the looser fit of the menswear, suggests the 1660s, although it is possible that the set was made later. Housed with the portrait are seven hand-painted mica overlays, sometimes called "talcs," that can be used to change the garb of the young woman. Similar to outfitting a paper doll, these transparent mica sheets are laid on top of the master image, and the opaque painted areas superimpose new costumes, hairstyles, and accessories on the figure below. The bright overlays display a variety of outfits and accessories, including three that show men's clothing. Mica overlays like these first appeared in the mid-seventeenth century as a form of entertainment and continued on into the early 1800s. The portraits were often of royalty, mostly female, and it was not uncommon for overlays of both female and male costuming to be included with the female portraits. Because of the fragile nature of the mica, very few of these transformation games have survived. E' presente un forellino che non lede alcuna lettera. Orazio Ricasoli Rucellai (Firenze, 23 aprile 1604 - Firenze, 6 febbraio 1673) è stato un letterato, filosofo e scienziato italiano. Fu il Rucellai discepolo di Galileo e in certa guisa il depositario e spositore delle opinioni metafìsiche professate dal suo maestro.[1] Di più: Quell' Orazio Ricasoli Rucellai in cui la scuola di Galileo ebbe uno dei maggiori lumi.[2] Rucellai affermava di essere amico e confidente di Galileo Galilei ma ciò non corrisponde al vero. In verità si erano incontrati solo una volta quando era stato suo ospite, con altri, nella villa di Arcetri[3]. Men che meno era stato suo studente. Quanto poi alla metafisica di Galileo, i Dialoghi Filosofici parlano da soli. Quando cominciò a comporre i Dialoghi a Firenze presero persino a chiamarlo "il nostro sapientissimo Socrate". Ma anche questa era una bufala. Il fatto è che Rucellai, ogni volta che componeva un dialogo, amava recitarlo a casa sua davanti a un pubblico scelto di personaggi del bel mondo fiorentino. Description: 17th c. etchings of Antonie van Waterloo are scarse. It is assumed by experts that Cornelis Danckerts II acquired control of the waterloo plates as early 1655, so well during Waterloo's lifetime. As such most 17th. C. plates are published by Danckerts. The numbering of the plates also points to that. The plates later passed over to the Ottens family earliest 1717.Artists and Engravers: This plate was etched by the reknown Anthonie (Anthony) Waterloo. Although etched he is known to have added accents to his work by burin and other engraving techniques as well. Anthonie Waterloo (1609-1690) is born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam probably to escape religious persecution. He was a painter and etcher and famous for his landscapes (136 items). He developed his own style, probably as an auto-didact. Although Waterloo traveled widely, many of his landscapes were probably imagined in the workshop and were influenced by the work of other landscapists. Condition: Very good. Order to print is on title page, The years are given according to Lady Day dating. Wing A867. Cromwell had died in Sept 1658. He felt Richard Cromwell, the oldest surviving son of Cromwell, was incompetent. He bided his time and then left Edinburgh with his army in January 1660.Monck entered London in February 1660 and by this speech and declaration, he allowed the Presbyterian members, secluded in Pride's Purge of 1648, to re-enter parliament on 21 February 1660 on the condition that the restored Long Parliament would agree to dissolve themselves once general elections had been held. In this speech, Monck directly and clearly tells Parliament that the finding of Peace and a happy settlement is in their hands. Monck might have declared himself Protector, but cautious and wise to the end, he sought a solution. Monck was in communication with Charles II; he accepted the latter's Declaration of Breda of 4 April 1660, which was largely based on Monck's recommendations. It offered reconciliation and forgiveness. Charles promised a general pardon for crimes committed during the English Civil War and the Interregnum for all those who recognised Charles as the lawful king; the retention by the current owners of property purchased during the same period; religious toleration; and the payment of pay arrears to members of the army, and that the army would be recommissioned into service under the crown. Paulus Fürst, um 1660, 21,5 x 25,2 Blattgr. 38,8 x 32 (ca. je Blatt) Dresden, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen ( ohne Datierung ). - Außerordentlich seltene und vollständige Folge von 4 Blättern, die 1600 von Adrian Collaert nach Marten de Vos das erste Mal gestochen wurden. Mit ihr ließ sich die Vergänglichkeit aller irdischen Macht und die Unüberwindlichkeit des Heiligen Römischen Reiches als letztes der vier Weltreiche vor dem Jüngsten Gericht auf damals durchaus allgemeinverständliche Art darstellen. Christoph Maucher (1642-nach1705) schnitt nach diesen Vorlagen Bernsteintafeln, die in einen Stuhl eingearbeitet wurden, den der brandenburgische Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm I. an Kaiser Leopold I. schenkte. - Die "Collaert"- Folge wurde dann 60 Jahre später von dem Nürnberger Verleger Paulus Fürst noch einmal herausgegeben (1660), diesmal mit deutschen Versen unterlegt und von Greogorius Frentzel gestochen. - Alle Darstellungen zeigen Feldherrn mit Standarten zu Pferde über ihren besiegten Gegnern. Die Stadtansichten im Hintergrund sind immer mit Fabeltieren ( Monstern) am oder im Wasser dargestellt. Blatt 1: Im breiten Rand fleckig, mit ein und Ausrissen, weit außerhalb des Plattenrandes, kleines Loch hinterlegt unten links. Blatt 2: kaum sichtbare, kleine Risser unten rechts in der Darstellung (hinterlegt), Quetschfalten vom Druck. Blatt 3: einwandfrei. Blatt 4: im breiten Rand fleckig und mit kleinen randlichen Läsuren. Wasserzeichen "Stab mit Schlange (MM)". Sicherlich ein Rarissmum der Ikonographie.

Francfort Gerlach, Beckenstein 1660 In-8 à deux colonnes de (16)-678 pp., vélin rigide, titre manuscrit à l'encre brune sur le dos lisse (reliure de l'époque). Deuxième édition greco-latine publiée sous un nouveau titre, illustrée de 255 bois gravés dans le texte d'après Virgil Solis. Anthologie établie par Isaac Nevelet des principaux fabulistes de l'Antiquité tardive et du Moyen Âge publiée une première fois en 1610 sous le titre Mythologia aesopica. C'est le recueil fabuliste le plus riche du XVIIe siècle (822 fables) consulté par Jean de La Fontaine, qui présente les fables et la vie d'Esope en ses deux versions grecque et latine, en regard et sur la même page. À côté des traditionnels Phèdre, Babrios et Avian, le recueil comporte les fables du rétheur grec Aphtonius (vers 400), les fables d'un anonyme, source essentielle pour le Moyen Âge, les fables de Laurentius Abstenius (Lorenzo Bevilacqua) parues la première fois de 1495 à 1505. Les figures sont reprises de l'édition Feyerabend 1566 des fables d'Esope illustrée par le graveur allemand Virgil Solis (1514-1562). Feuillets roussis, tache d'encre à la page 167. Provenance Charles Nodier avec son ex-libris "Ex Musaeo Caroli Nodier". Dans la Description raisonnée d'une jolie description de livres (n°761), Nodier souligne : « Bon exemplaire d'une édition recherchée qui avait déjà paru en 1610, et qui n'a subi d'autre changement ici que celui du frontispice ». [circa 1660]. En deux feuilles jointes de 390 x 586 mm. Très beau dessin, à l'encre et lavis, montrant une vue du bastion royal de la ville de Péronne dans la Somme. On y voit une partie des fortifications de la ville avec un bastion central sur lequel se trouve une porte surmontée d'une cloche et portant deux blasons aux armes du roi et de Richelieu. En comparant ce dessin à un plan manuscrit de la ville, daté de 1728, et conservé aux archives de la Somme, il semble que le bastion royal de notre plan était placé en avant de la porte de Bretagne, et qu'ainsi la vue est prise depuis le faubourg de Bretagne. À droite du bastion royal, se trouve le bastion de Vendôme avec la tour de l'ancien corps de la place, et à gauche ce que le plan nomme la «place sans parapet». Au premier plan du dessin figurent de nombreux personnages occupés à tailler la pierre, tandis que d'autres, sur le bastion de gauche, font des travaux de terrassement. Le dessin est entouré d'un cadre dessiné à l'imitation des cadres en bois sculpté et surmonté des armes de Michel Le Tellier (1603-1685), Secrétaire d'État à la Guerre de 1643 à 1677. Grandes marges, traces de pliure et petites déchirures dans les marges, l'encre du titre dans le cartouche est presque effacée.
