HOMER - John OGILBY (1600-1676)
London: printed by Thomas Roycroft, to be had at the Author's House, 1660. Folio. Letterpress title in red and black. Engraved frontispiece, engraved portraits of Ogilby and Charles II, engraved statue of Homer and 48 (of 49) plates engraved by W. Hollar and others after Cleyn and others. Lacks plate illustrating Book 6, verse 340. Contemporary red morocco, expertly rebacked to style retaining the five central compartments of the original spine, marbled endpapers Provenance: S.P. (initials in gilt on the spine) First edition of Ogilby's lavishly illustrated edition of Homer's Iliad, among the most beautiful editions ever printed. John Ogilby began his professional life a far cry from the world of publishing, as an apprentice to a dancing master. Having no formal education, he began learning Latin in his forties with the help of members of the University of Cambridge whom he had befriended. In 1649, having had some success at a young age with creating his own verse, he attempted a translation of Virgil. Meeting with a positive response, he turned his study to Greek so that he could translate Aesop and Homer. Beyond simple translations, his editions of such classics include significant marginal annotations, synthesizing previous scholarship. However, the common thread among his works, and the principal reason for his success in his lifetime and beyond, are the numerous illustrations which adored his works. The illustrated folio editions of such classics were a new and welcome addition to the mid-17th century English book market and led to the larger more … [Click Below for Full Description]

(c. late 17th century). Hand-painted miniature portrait with five mica overlays, all in a case mimicking a Saxon thaler coin. The case opens to reveal a full-body portrait of a finely-dressed man and woman, as well as a delicately rendered portrait of a young woman. Both are touched with metallic silver paint. The fashion in the paintings, with the off-the-shoulder dresses and the shapes of the sleeves and bodices, combined with the looser fit of the menswear, suggests the 1660s, although it is possible that the set was made later. Housed with the portrait are seven hand-painted mica overlays, sometimes called "talcs," that can be used to change the garb of the young woman. Similar to outfitting a paper doll, these transparent mica sheets are laid on top of the master image, and the opaque painted areas superimpose new costumes, hairstyles, and accessories on the figure below. The bright overlays display a variety of outfits and accessories, including three that show men's clothing. Mica overlays like these first appeared in the mid-seventeenth century as a form of entertainment and continued on into the early 1800s. The portraits were often of royalty, mostly female, and it was not uncommon for overlays of both female and male costuming to be included with the female portraits. Because of the fragile nature of the mica, very few of these transformation games have survived. Housed in a replica of the 1628 thaler, with a portrait of Johann Georg I on one side, and the shield of the Electorate of Saxony under the Holy Roman Empire on the reverse. The coin was originally minte … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588-1664)
Bella e importante carta dell'Ucraina. This map of Ukraine, issued by Jan Jansson in about 1657, is one of the earliest maps to include the name Ukraine in the title of a printed map, following shortly after the Treaty of Zboriv in 1649, although derived largely from Beauplan's maps. printed map, following shortly after the Treaty of Zboriv in 1649, although derived largely from Beauplan's maps. The name Ukraine was popularized in the west by Guillaume La Vasseur de Beauplan's Description d'Ukraine, first published in Rouen in 1651 (in an edition of 100 copies) under a different title, with the named changed as above in the 1660 edition and subsequent editions published in French (1661, 1662, 1663) Latin (1662), Dutch (1664), Spanish (1665 and 1672) and English (1680). The work described Ukraine as several provinces of the Kingdom of Poland lying between the borders of Muscovy and the frontiers of Transylvania. Beauplan, a military engineer, had spent a significant period of time constructing fortresses in the region in the 1630s. In 1650, his map entitled Delineatio Specialis et Accurata Ukrainae, showed the palatinates of Kyiv, Bratslav, Podilia, Volhynia and part of Rus (Pokutia). Orazio, Rucellai
Lettera autografo di Orazio Rucellai. Celebre letterato e scienziato. Roma, Marzo 1660. Pacco 3

First edition of a linguistic treatise co-authored by George Fox, the founder of the Quakers and by Quaker leaders John Stubs and Benjamin Furley (or Furly), which analyzed proper pronoun usage in 35 different European languages. Each section is separately titled with a “Battle-Door” introduction, a ruled border in the shape of a battledore, and followed by a brief study on the pronouns of interest. This work is notable for its clean typographic layout and for incorporating a multitude of types in different languages, including Hebrew, Syriac, Arabic, Ethiopic, Samaritan, Coptic, Armenian, Anglo-Saxon, and Irish. This work was regarded as Fox’s most direct criticism against what he deemed as the language of “Babel.” In it, Fox designated such recommendations as, “You” to “Many” and “Thou” to “One.” Fox believed that the Quaker use of “thee” and “thou” cultivated a purer understanding of one’s place in this world; he thought it … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Plate 6: Landscape with man with bucket on his back and dog (Hollstein 60, II(3). Lifetime impression. Watermark: 'IS': c. 1660-1680. Etching on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: 17th c. etchings of Antonie van Waterloo are scarse. It is assumed by experts that Cornelis Danckerts II acquired control of the waterloo plates as early 1655, so well during Waterloo's lifetime. As such most 17th. C. plates are published by Danckerts. The numbering of the plates also points to that. The plates later passed over to the Ottens family earliest 1717.Artists and Engravers: This plate was etched by the reknown Anthonie (Anthony) Waterloo. Although etched he is known to have added accents to his work by burin and other engraving techniques as well. Anthonie Waterloo (1609-1690) is born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam probably to escape religious persecution. He was a painter and etcher and famous for his landscapes (136 items). He developed his own style, probably as an auto-didact. Although Waterloo traveled widely, many of his landscapes were probably imagined in the workshop and were influenced by the work of other landscapists. Condition: Very good. Excellent dark impression. General age related toning. With margins. Some remains of paper tape on rear from previous storing. This item has not been washed, cleaned, bleached, restored. Storage location: Q2-256 LA The overall size is ca. 6 x 5.4 inch. The image size is ca. 5.5 x 4.9 inch. The overall size is ca. 15.2 x 13.6 cm. The image size is ca. 14 x 12.5 cm.

Monck George
London 1660 - 699, Heavily browned. On verso of title page is long statement, well written but not readable by me. Top corner of p3,4 torn with loss of a few letters. Order to print is on title page, The years are given according to Lady Day dating. Wing A867. Cromwell had died in Sept 1658. He felt Richard Cromwell, the oldest surviving son of Cromwell, was incompetent. He bided his time and then left Edinburgh with his army in January 1660.Monck entered London in February 1660 and by this speech and declaration, he allowed the Presbyterian members, secluded in Pride's Purge of 1648, to re-enter parliament on 21 February 1660 on the condition that the restored Long Parliament would agree to dissolve themselves once general elections had been held. In this speech, Monck directly and clearly tells Parliament that the finding of Peace and a happy settlement is in their hands. Monck might have declared himself Protector, but cautious and wise to the end, he sought a solution. Monck was in communication with Charles II; he accepted the latter's Declaration of Breda of 4 April 1660, which was largely based on Monck's recommendations. It offered reconciliation and forgiveness. Charles promised a general pardon for crimes committed during the English Civil War and the Interregnum for all those who recognised Charles as the lawful king; the retention by the current owners of property purchased during the same period; religious toleration; and the payment of pay arrears to members of the army, and that the army would be recommissioned into service under the crown. Kupferstiche v. Gregorius Frentzel n. Marten de Vos b. Paulus Fürst, um 1660, 21,5 x 25,2 Blattgr. 38,8 x 32 (ca. je Blatt) Dresden, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen ( ohne Datierung ). I. an Kaiser Leopold I. schenkte.
