Beckher, Daniel.
Prostant apud Jo. Martin, Ja. Allestry & Tho. Dicas, 1660. Born in Gdansk, Beckher (1594-1655) studied at several universities (Marburg, Heidelberg, Wittenberg, and Rostock) and eventually received an appointment as a professor of medicine at the University of Konigsberg. A steadfast follower of Paracelsus' teachings, he perhaps had blinders on regarding medical advances of the late 16th and early 17th century. Nonetheless, his Medicus microcosmus, first published in 1622 at Rostock as Spagyria microcosmi, tradens medicinam, e corpore hominis tùm vivo, tùm extincto doctè eruendam, scitè praeparandam, & dextrè propinandam, was a popular and widely used text of anatomy and therapeutics, as attested to by its having been reprinted several times on the Continent in the period to 1660. This is the sole printing in England of any of Beckher's writings, here described as "Editio nova triplo auctior & correctior." Provenance: 20th-century bookplate of A. Garrigues, D.M. Most recently in the residue of the stock of the F. Thomas Heller bookselling firm (est. ca. 1928). Searches of NUC, ESTC, and WorldCat surprisingly locate only seven U.S. libraries (DNLM, NN [incomplete copy], CU-M, WU, PCarlD, NNOD, MiU) reporting ownership. Notably absent from that list are Harvard, Yale, the Huntington, New York Academy of Medicine, the College of Physicians, University of Texas, and the Folger.

VEEN, Otto van
1660. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Otto van Veen was a 16th-century Belgian emblematist who produced several different emblem books including 'Amoris Divini Emblemata' which first appeared in 1615. This book was a classic example of Van Veen's attention to detail in his illustrations through the use of humanistic views. According to Montone, Van Veen's emblem books, "functioned not only as a model for other Dutch and foreign emblem books but also as a source of inspiration for many artists in other fields." This 1660 printing comprises 60 illustrated engravings each paired with a text verse on opposite pages. The poetic prose verses appear in Latin, Spanish, Dutch, and German. These emblems show human emotions, mainly love. [Attributes: First Edition]

Jean-Baptiste Du Hamel
Astronomia Physica Du Hamel, Jean-Baptiste Paris, 1660 Very rare first edition of the main treatise on astronomy and physics by French priest and scientist, Jean-Baptiste Du Hamel(1624-1706). He was selected as the first secretary of the newly founded French Academy of Sciences in 1666. Two parts in one volume - quarto, contemporary calf with gilt spine. Red speckled edges. Woodcut vignette on title page, woodcut initials, head and tail pieces. Binding a bit rubbed, minor spine cap repair and hinge strengthening. A few pages with offsetting, otherwise remarkably clean and crisp. The text is wonderfully illustrated with numerous woodcut diagrams. A really lovely copy. Near Fine. Donated by Dom Ruffé to the Congregation of the House of St. Lazarus with a gift inscription on the title page. The book is divided into two dedicated sections - the first to light and color and the second to speculative astronomy and geometry. Following these works is an annex under separate pagination that contains three works of Pierre Petit(1617-1687) on the solar eclipse of November 14, 1659, the latitude of Paris, and a system of the world. "Du Hamel was as comfortable in the study of mathematics, astronomy, and other sciences as in theology and philosophy; in this respect he was well placed to act as a bridge between the movement of scientific ideas and those of theology and philosophy...Given the panoramic nature of his intellectual training and pursuits...this highly cultivated priest refused to be committed to any all-embracing, exclusive philosophical system."(Science and Social Status: Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas BLOUNT
[History] ~ DISASTER TURNED TRIUMPH BLOUNT, Thomas Boscobel: or, the history of his Sacred Majesties Most miraculous Preservation After the Battle of Worcester, 3. Sept. 1651 London. Printed for Henry Seile, Stationer to the Kings most Excellent Majesty, 1660. 8vo. [8], 6, 5-55pp, [1]. Issue with dedication signed 'Tho. Blount'. With folding engraved frontispiece portrait, a further engraved diagram of Boscobel House and the Royal Oake (by Wenceslaus Hollar) and an engraved armorial. Finely bound in nineteenth-century hard-grained brown morocco, richly gilt (by Mackenzie). Marbled endpapers. A.E.G. With decorative gilt bookplate ('JE SUIS LOYAL') to FEP. Occasional marking, small glue spot and old paper repair to b4, neat early annotations referring to Bate's Elenchi Motuum Neperorum in Anglia (London, 1661-3) to E1-2. The uncommon first edition of an iconic Restoration title; a work that more than many other in the history of the Stuart monarchy turned what had been a disaster, loss at the 1651 Battle of Worcester and propaganda gift to the Cromwellians of a royal claimant's hiding in an oak tree, into a triumph of foresight and preservation. Not intended as mere propagandist text, English antiquary and Catholic Thomas Blount's (1618-1679) account of the events at Boscobel House was sourced from several eyewitnesses, and referenced the part played by English Recusants at White Ladies, Boscobel and Moseley Old Hall. The accuracy of the work, along with royal approval, ensured the work's status; it was continued in 1681 and the text reprinted throughout the seventeenth and e … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pierre GASSENDI
[] ~ GASSENDI ON EPICURUS GASSENDI, Pierre Institutio logica, et philosophiae epicuri syntagma Londini, [i.e. London]. Officina Rogeri Danielis, 1660. . [12], 100pp. [Bound with:] GASSENDI, Pierre. Philosophiae epicuri syntagma, Continens Canonicam, Physicam, & Ethicam. Londini, [i.e. London]. Ex officina Rogeri Danielis, 1660. [16], 256pp. With blank A1. 12mo. A handsome and well preserved copy in contemporary blind-ruled calf, the lightest of rubbing to extremities, slight mark to upper board. Printer's waste from a theological work (running title 'Loci communes') used as paste downs, since sprung, revealing the early ink inscription of 'Hugo Nanncy' and 'U3' shelf mark to verso of upper board. The first British printing of two works by French philosopher Pierre Gassendi (1592-1665), which, as the title of the first work indicates, were almost certainly issued together; the second of which sought to replace the dominant philosophical system of Aristotle with the logic, physics and ethics of Epicurus. Gassendi's Philosophiae Epicuri syntagma (Lyon, 1649) had been gaining traction in philosophical circles in Commonwealth and Protectorate England, notably finding publication in a free English translation by Walter Charleton (Physiologia Epicuro-Gassendo-Charltoniana: or A fabrick of science natural, upon the hypothesis of atoms, London 1654) and further exposure in Thomas Stanley's History of Philosophy. Demand was evidently sufficient to provoke Roger Daniel's son-in-law John Redmayne to print a second edition in 1668. "Pancirolloâ s work is interesting, not only as giving some notion of the state of knowledge as to the history of invention in his time, but as displaying the attitude of scholars towards the practical arts of the ancients" (John K. Ferguson: Book of Secrets). Edited by Heinrich Salmuth, with an engraved title after Sebastian Furck. Provenance: Duke August of Brunswick-Luneburg, bookplate and printed shelf number 57; Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel, library and withdrawal stamps on verso of the title page. Quarto. Dauncey, John
London: Printed for Richard Royston, 1660. First edition. Hardcover. Very good overall. A biography written by a committed royalist intended to restore Charles I's image. The copy of Henry B. H. Beaufoy, FRS, noted collector of Shakespeare and prestigious hot air balloonist, with his armorial bookplate. Beaufoy may have acquired the biography due to a Charles I and Shakespeare connection: in 1633 Shakespeare's version of 'The Taming of the Shrew' was performed at court before Charles I and Henrietta Maria. Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy (1786-1851), member of a wealthy Quaker family, was a philanthropist, artist and coin and book collector (the "Beaufoy Shakespeares," the first four folio editions of Shakespeare's works were sold at Christie's). Beaufoy famously made a hot air balloon flight with James Sadler (first English balloonist), from Hackney, Middlesex, to East Thorpe, Essex. In numerous other flights he collected valuable information for cartographers, meteorologists, and physicists. Slim, small 8vo, frontispiece portrait, 71pp, [1]pp advertisement, all edges gilt. Full tan calf ca. 1840s, rebacked spine gilt decorated, with the initials E. G. H. stamped at the front board; gilt title labels, "Historic Memoirs" and "Character of Charles I" at spine. Top of front board slightly sunned, lower corners slightly rubbed. Wing F 291. OCLC: 84781729. In 1912 a copy bound by Clarke was sold by Anderson Auction Company, provenance Library of Robert Doe. Light penciled name on the ffep of J. J. Blade, 1909. A very pleasant copy.

Outside of British libraries, ESTC locates copies at on … [Click Below for Full Description]

STAMPIOEN, Jan Janzoon
Amsterdam,: Johann Vingbooms, 1660. Amsterdam,: Johann Vingbooms,, 1660.. Folio (500 by 340mm), six single page engraved coats-of-arms, engraved wall map in nine sections, all with fine original hand-colour, size if joined 1470 by 2340 mm. This beautiful wall map shows the water board of Schieland en de Krimpenerwaard in southwest Holland, based on surveys initiated by the Dyke Reeves of the Schieland Polder in 1648, as the 1611 map of Balthasar Floris was outdated. The survey was done by Jan Janszoon Stampioen between 1649 and 1654. After a long search, a qualified engraver was found in Johann Vingbooms of Amsterdam, best known for the exquisite manuscript maps and views he produced based on Dutch East and West India Company materials. Johannes van de Vennip was engaged to colour the map. The drawing, engraving and printing cost an astonishing 3,350 guilders. The map lays out the principal towns, villages, and settlements, differentiating the land ownerships. Also shown are the borders of the polders (tracks of reclaimed lands) together with the names of their owners. It displays drainage canals, windmills, certain cultivated areas, ornamental gardens, some larger buildings, churches, and street or canal plans of the cities of Rotterdam, Delfshaven, Gouda and Schiedam. The map, if mounted completely, is surrounded by coats-of-arms on three sides. We have only been able to trace two examples of this edition: Yale University Library, and in the archive of 'Hoogheemraadschap van Schieland en de Krimpenerwaard' in the Netherlands. Both maps are uncoloured. Our copy seems to … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLOUNT, Thomas

BLAEU WILLELM
1660. Incisione in rame, coloritura originale d'epoca, mm 383x497. Ottimo esemplare, ampi margini. Strappo restaurato alla piega centrale

Blaeu, Joan
17th-CENTURY RUSSIA ?Tabula Russiae...?. Copper engraving of Russia with armorial cartouche, large inset plan of Moscow and smaller inset view of Archangelsk. Published by Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam around 1660, as part of a Latin edition of his Atlas Maior. Colured by a later hand. Size (print): approx. 43 x 55 cm. The Atlas Maior in its various editions was the largest atlas ever published. It was justly famed (?the greatest and finest atlas ever published? - Koeman) for its production values, its high typographic standard, the quality of its engraving, ornamentation, binding and colouring. Blaeu?s atlas frequently served as the official gift of the Dutch Republic to princes and other authorities. It is one of the most lavish and highly prized of all seventeenth century illustrated books. The maps are embellished in the Baroque style, and many rank among the most beautiful ever made. This map of Russia, originally part of the Atlas Maior volume II, is based on Hessel Gerritsz? important 1614 map of Russia, which he compiled from manuscripts brought back by Isaac Massa. Massa was a wealthy Dutch grain trader and the envoy to Moscow during the reign of Boris Gudunov. Hessel Gerritsz in turn, was the first exclusive cartographer of the Dutch East India Company and considered one of the foremost Dutch cartographers of the seventeenth century. Price: ?2.150,-.

The Venetian Boschini was a contemporary of Palma il Giovane and Odoardo Fialetti.
