Panciroli, Guido
Frankfurt: Heirs of G. Schoenwetter, 1660. Hardcover. Very good. A handsome copy of Panciroli's encyclopaedic history of ancient and modern arts and technology. The first part treats the arts and techniques of antiquity, including papyrus, roads, statues, libraries, labyrinths, the pyramids, tombs, obelisks, dress and accessories such as the fibula, wine, slavery, Roman writing and writing surfaces, equitation, hunting and food production, and the performing arts, including music, musica muta (pantomime), and stagecraft. Part II, on inventions unknown to the ancients, opens with a long section on the New World, discussing its discovery, the effects of the encounter on the natives (venereal disease tops the list), American crops and products including sassafras, plantains, and many other fruits and herbs, with their uses by the Native Americans. Other sections are devoted to the history of printing in China and Europe, papermaking, sugar, alchemy, porcelain, time-pieces, bells, ciphers and codes, glasses, silk-weaving, tournaments and jousts, and watermills. "Pancirollo's work is interesting, not only as giving some notion of the state of knowledge as to the history of invention in his time, but as displaying the attitude of scholars towards the practical arts of the ancients" (John K. Ferguson: Book of Secrets). Edited by Heinrich Salmuth, with an engraved title after Sebastian Furck. Provenance: Duke August of Brunswick-Luneburg, bookplate and printed shelf number 57; Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel, library and withdrawal stamps on verso of the title page. Mitelli, Giuseppe Maria
Peso complessivo: 3300 g.

Blaeu, Joan
17th-CENTURY RUSSIA?Tabula Russiae...?. Copper engraving of Russia with armorial cartouche, large inset plan of Moscow and smaller inset view of Archangelsk. Published by Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam around 1660, as part of a Latin edition of his Atlas Maior. Colured by a later hand. Size (print): approx. 43 x 55 cm.The Atlas Maior in its various editions was the largest atlas ever published. It was justly famed (?the greatest and finest atlas ever published? - Koeman) for its production values, its high typographic standard, the quality of its engraving, ornamentation, binding and colouring. Blaeu?s atlas frequently served as the official gift of the Dutch Republic to princes and other authorities. It is one of the most lavish and highly prized of all seventeenth century illustrated books. The maps are embellished in the Baroque style, and many rank among the most beautiful ever made. This map of Russia, originally part of the Atlas Maior volume II, is based on Hessel Gerritsz? important 1614 map of Russia, which he compiled from manuscripts brought back by Isaac Massa. Massa was a wealthy Dutch grain trader and the envoy to Moscow during the reign of Boris Gudunov. Hessel Gerritsz in turn, was the first exclusive cartographer of the Dutch East India Company and considered one of the foremost Dutch cartographers of the seventeenth century.Price: ?2.150,-.

GOEDAERT, Joannes
Middelburgh, Netherlands: Jaques Fierens, 1660. 2nd vol. only: [24], 288, [16] p. 16 cm. Engraved title page + 42 engraved plates. Full leather. Small notation on lower spine, label missing, chipped spine head. Corners worn. Pages, including plates, are clean and neat. Joannes Goedaert (1617-1668), one of the earliest authors to write about entomology, was also one of the first to write about the insects of the Netherlands. He was one of the first scientists to base his entomological discussions entirely on firsthand observation rather than paraphrasing and citing his predecessors. Perhaps this was because he was not an academic and never attended university; he began his investigations of the natural world from the viewpoint of an artist and craftsman. Goedaert took samples of larvae, raised them to maturity, and recorded the transformation of beetles, flies, wasps, butterflies, and moths, portraying them with a painter's eye for detail. A well-preserved copy of the Dutch language edition. Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
