Pierre GASSENDI
[] ~ GASSENDI ON EPICURUS GASSENDI, Pierre Institutio logica, et philosophiae epicuri syntagma Londini, [i.e. London]. Officina Rogeri Danielis, 1660. . [12], 100pp. [Bound with:] GASSENDI, Pierre. Philosophiae epicuri syntagma, Continens Canonicam, Physicam, & Ethicam. Londini, [i.e. London]. Ex officina Rogeri Danielis, 1660. [16], 256pp. With blank A1. 12mo. A handsome and well preserved copy in contemporary blind-ruled calf, the lightest of rubbing to extremities, slight mark to upper board. Printer's waste from a theological work (running title 'Loci communes') used as paste downs, since sprung, revealing the early ink inscription of 'Hugo Nanncy' and 'U3' shelf mark to verso of upper board. The first British printing of two works by French philosopher Pierre Gassendi (1592-1665), which, as the title of the first work indicates, were almost certainly issued together; the second of which sought to replace the dominant philosophical system of Aristotle with the logic, physics and ethics of Epicurus. Gassendi's Philosophiae Epicuri syntagma (Lyon, 1649) had been gaining traction in philosophical circles in Commonwealth and Protectorate England, notably finding publication in a free English translation by Walter Charleton (Physiologia Epicuro-Gassendo-Charltoniana: or A fabrick of science natural, upon the hypothesis of atoms, London 1654) and further exposure in Thomas Stanley's History of Philosophy. Demand was evidently sufficient to provoke Roger Daniel's son-in-law John Redmayne to print a second edition in 1668. Outside of British libraries, ESTC locates copies at on … [Click Below for Full Description]

Du Hamel, Jean-Baptiste
Paris: Pierre Lamy, 1660. Very rare first edition of the main treatise on astronomy and physics by French priest and scientist, Jean-Baptiste Du Hamel(1624-1706). He was selected as the first secretary of the newly founded French Academy of Sciences in 1666. ***** Two parts in one volume - quarto, contemporary calf with gilt spine. Red speckled edges. Woodcut vignette on title page, woodcut initials, head and tail pieces. Binding a bit rubbed, minor spine cap repair and hinge strengthening. A few pages with offsetting, otherwise remarkably clean and crisp. The text is wonderfully illustrated with numerous woodcut diagrams. A really lovely copy. Near Fine. ***** Donated by Dom Ruffé to the Congregation of the House of St. Lazarus with a gift inscription on the title page. *****The book is divided into two dedicated sections - the first to light and color and the second to speculative astronomy and geometry. Following these works is an annex under separate pagination that contains three works of Pierre Petit(1617-1687) on the solar eclipse of November 14, 1659, the latitude of Paris, and a system of the world. ***** "Du Hamel was as comfortable in the study of mathematics, astronomy, and other sciences as in theology and philosophy; in this respect he was well placed to act as a bridge between the movement of scientific ideas and those of theology and philosophy...Given the panoramic nature of his intellectual training and pursuits...this highly cultivated priest refused to be committed to any all-embracing, exclusive philosophical system."(Science and Social Status: The Memb … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frankreich - Lune, Pierre de (Pseud.)
Pierre David, Paris, 1660. 8°. 4 Bll., 364 SS., 17 Bll. Pgt. d. Zt. [Click Below for Full Description]

Forde, Thomas
London: R. and W. Leybourn, for William Grantham at the Black Bear in St. Pauls Church-yard, neer the little North Door, 1660. London: R. and W. Leybourn, for William Grantham at the Black Bear in St. Pauls Church-yard, neer the little North Door, 1660. First separately issued edition of Thomas Forde's collection of pointed anecdotes and pithy maxims, also published as one section of his major work of the Restoration, Virtus Rediviva. Forde's goal was to produce an anthology of the very best examples of ancient and modern wit: "I have laboured to subtract, rather than multiply." From Socrates and Alexander to John Foxe and Anne Boleyn, the selections deal with every aspect of human experience: "men's actions were like notes of musick, sometimes in spaces, and sometimes in lines, sometimes above, and sometimes beneath, and never or seldom straight for any long continuance." Wing F1548A. A near-fine copy, from the famed Macclesfield library. Small octavo, measuring 6 x 3.5 inches: [6], 90. Twentieth-century three-quarter speckled calf, marbled boards, raised bands ruled in gilt, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, all edges stained red. Woodcut headpieces and initials. Engraved bookplate of the Earls of Macclesfield, North Library. Text block cropped close, shaving some page numbers; loss to top corner of D5, affecting a few words; boards lightly rubbed.

Carlsbad- Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperorand King of Bohemia, founded the city in 1370. It is historically famous for its hot springs. Around 1350, Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor organized an expedition into the forests surrounding modern-day Karlovy Vary during a stay in Loket. On the site of a spring, he established a spa called the Horké Lázn_ u Lokte(Hot Spas at Loket). The location was subsequently named in German ;Carlsbad; after him once he had acclaimed the healing power of the hot springs, at least according to legend. Earlier settlements can be also found in the outskirts of today's town.An important political event took place in the town in 1819, with the issuing of the Carlsbad Decrees following a conference there. Schenk Peter ( 1660 - 1718 ) Amsterdam
Artist: Schenk Peter ( - 1718 ) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1730. - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; - condition: Some restoration at loewer centerfold; - size (in cm): 48 x 57; - description : Map shows the island of Rügen.Rügen is Germany's largest island by area. It is located off the Pomeranian coast in the Baltic Sea and belongs to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The island of Rügen is part of the district of Vorpommern-Rügen, with its county seat in Stralsund. The towns on Rügen are: Bergen, Sassnitz, Putbus and Garz. In addition, there are the Baltic seaside resorts of Binz, Baabe, Göhren, Sellin and Thiessow. From the 7th century the West Slavic Rani built an empire on Rügen and the neighbouring coast between Recknitz and Ryck. It decidedly affected the history of the Baltic Sea area and the surrounding Obodritic and Liutician occupied mainland for the next few centuries. In 1168, the Danish king, Valdemar I, and his army commander and advisor, Bishop Absalon of Roskilde destroyed the Svetovid temple in the hillfort at Cape Arkona, ending both the territorial and religious autonomy of the Rani; their former monarchs became Danish princes of Rügen. Under Danish rule the Principality of Rugia changed its character. Danish monasteries were established. The Slavic cultural element disappeared, mostly due to the lack of their own Slavic church structures, so that the Rani were absorbed in the period that followed into the now German-influenced people of Rügen. After the death of the last Slav prince, Wizlaw III, in 1325, the principality … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Benedetto CASTIGLIONE detto "Il Grechetto"
Three tracts from the Civil War and Commonwealth period. The first tract is a list of state expenditure. An earlier edition had been printed in 1647. This 1660 edition had two states; in this one, the 'B' of B1 is under the 'a'. There's no casual priority to either state, but this state is more common. The second tract proposes that Cromwell come to an agreement with the exiled Charles where he will retake the throne upon Cromwell's death, citing Cromwell's unpopularity and the inadvisability of an elective or hereditary protectorate. Shipping charges will be included ONLY if the book(s) are NOT as described. PLEASE NOTE! This book has incorrect pagination as is evidenced in photos 5-8. Page 48 seems to skip to page 51 and item #24 on page 48 seems to skip to item to item #26 on page 51. (SEE PHOTO #5) However, if you go to page 52 you will see another item #26. (SEE PHOTO #6). What appears to have happened is that the printer got confused as there in no break in the continuity of the sentence structure between page 48 & 41 and that the 1st item #26, on page 51 should actually be item #25. Furthermore, there is no evidence of any pages being removed. A similar situation exists on pp 256-267 whereby page 256 jumps to 267. Again, the printer probably had one too many schnapps as item #7 on page 256 is followed by item #8 on 267. (SEE PHOTO #7). Item #9 follows on page 268. (SEE PAGE #8) Like the first example, there is no break in the continuity of sentence structure and no visible signs of any pages removed. The book shows the Title Page and is then followed by the text block which starts with page #1 and ends with page #319 - although, as shown above there are not 319 pages. The text block is then followed by an index of A-Z It is our opinion that the book has had no loss of text or pages but, as shown above, has a pagination problem whereby the printer has run amok. Panciroli, Guido
Heirs of G. Schoenwetter, 1660. Hardcover. A handsome copy of Panciroli's encyclopaedic history of ancient and modern arts and technology. The first part treats the arts and techniques of antiquity, including papyrus, roads, statues, libraries, labyrinths, the pyramids, tombs, obelisks, dress and accessories such as the fibula, wine, slavery, Roman writing and writing surfaces, equitation, hunting and food production, and the performing arts, including music, musica muta (pantomime), and stagecraft. Part II, on inventions unknown to the ancients, opens with a long section on the New World, discussing its discovery, the effects of the encounter on the natives (venereal disease tops the list), American crops and products including sassafras, plantains, and many other fruits and herbs, with their uses by the Native Americans. Other sections are devoted to the history of printing in China and Europe, papermaking, sugar, alchemy, porcelain, time-pieces, bells, ciphers and codes, glasses, silk-weaving, tournaments and jousts, and watermills. "Pancirollo's work is interesting, not only as giving some notion of the state of knowledge as to the history of invention in his time, but as displaying the attitude of scholars towards the practical arts of the ancients" (John K. Ferguson: Book of Secrets). Edited by Heinrich Salmuth, with an engraved title after Sebastian Furck. Giovanni Battista NICOLOSI
Parigi, 1660. Interestings and importants Western and Eastern Hemispheres maps, who copied the cartographical details of Sanson. The Colleggio di Propaganda da Fide commissioned the cartographer Giovanni Nicolosi (1610/70) the realization of an atlas in 1652. Nicolosi was not only a famous and estimated priest and Vatican functionary, but was also a well known cartographer and writer. He admired Galileo event though, due to his profession, he dissociated himself from his theories, sticking with the Church and its Ptolemaic vision of the world. As a result, he published in 1660 his Dell'Ercole e Studio geografico. A second edition of his work was printed in Rome by Mascardi in 1670/71 with the title of Hercules Siculus Sive Studium Geographicum, containing geographic maps of the world and the continents.
