Contemporary price notation on title page (1s. 4d), two contemporary ink corrections to M2v. Closely cropped at times never affecting text, a few insignificant blemishes, tiny hole to 2E grazing a couple of letters. An excellent, clean copy. Woodcut insignia of Oxford University and Charles II. First edition of this collection of verses by Oxford men celebrating the restoration of Charles II to the throne, written in Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, French and English. Oxford, Charles I's capital during the Civil War, had remained a bastion of royalism, and by all accounts the University welcomed the Stuarts' return. Edward Pococke, the notable orientalist and first holder of Oxford Chair of Arabic, contributes both an Arabic and a Hebrew poem. ESTC R203103; Wing (2nd ed.), O863; Madan, III, 2466. Hottinger, Johann Heinrich.
1660. (20), 600, (24) pp. Text in Latin, Hebrew and Arabic. Contemporary vellum with ms. title to spine. 4to. Fine copy of the authoritative second edition of Hottinger's chief work, expanded by several long sections in the original languages. "One of the most significant contributions to the history of Islam to have been published in the seventeenth century" and "a groundbreaking account of the history and basic tenets of Islam which relied almost entirely on authentic Islamic sources" (Loop). Principal work of the theologian Hottinger (1620-67), a founder of oriental linguistics. Includes extensive chapters on the Prophet's genealogy, the main doctrines and the religious context of Islam, as well as many lengthy quotations in Arabic. While preparing the "Historia Orientalis", Hottinger had to cope with several problems, the most important being the lack of Arabic printing types. In the first edition of 1651 he had solved this issue by transliterating the Arabic quotations into Hebrew and using Hebrew letters with 'niqquds' to cover the Arabic alphabet. In the 1650s, however, the Swiss printers Johann Jakob and Heinrich Bodmer had started the casting of Arabic, Syriac and Samaritan types in their own foundry, and the present second edition of the "Historia" could be printed with Arabic types. Hottinger presents the entire body of knowledge about Islamic history and religion available at the time. He revised the first edition, published in 1651, during his stay in Heidelberg in 1655, where he had been summoned by the Elector Palatine. - Some browning as common, but an outst … [Click Below for Full Description]

Astronomy
Lyon, 1660s. This fascinating scientific manuscript documents the state of scientific knowledge and education in France in the years following Galileo's trial and the Church's prohibition of Copernican theory. The manuscript comprises three parts: Physics (De Corpore naturali inspecie seu Mondo Coelo and Elementis, Generatione and corruptione rerum Meteorisque, etc), Magnetism (Tractatus de Magnete, Historia Magnetis), and Astronomy (of Praxibus Astronomicis, Systema Copernici explicatur, etc). The Astronomy section includes discussions of the world systems, especially that of Copernicus, and the names of Galileo, Gassendi, Kepler, Tycho Brahe, and others appear. The Magnetism section incudes mentions of Gassendi, Maignan, Descartes, Galileo, and Kircher, all of whom made vital contributions to the field in the seventeenth century. The Church declared heliocentrism to be heretical in 1616, and in the following years the Jesuits, especially astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli, were at the forefront of efforts to oppose the theory. This manuscript was evidently written at a Jesuit institution. The writer refers frequently to authors commonly cited by Jesuits. Copernican theory (admitted to be the "ingenious Copernican system") is opposed by the theories of Riccioli. A sample calculation in the Astronomy section states "Hic Lugduni" (here in Lyon). These facts combine to suggest that the manuscript is by a teacher or student at the Jesuit Collège de la Trinité in Lyon. The organization is consistent with university textbooks of the seventeenth century, par … [Click Below for Full Description]

PANCIROLI, Guido
1660 Guido Panciroli Memorabilium Discoveries in America Inventions ALCHEMY Guido Panciorli was a 16th-century Italian historian known for his most popular book ‘Memorabilium’ – a work which gives a general account of inventions and technology in Europe as well as discoveries in America. Bigmore & Wyman claim that the frontispiece, which depicts a printer’s room, was used as proof in the discussion that in the early days of typography it was customary to employ anagnostes. According to Ferguson, “Pancirollo's work is interesting, not only as giving some notion of the state of knowledge as to the history of invention in his time, bus as displaying the attitude of scholars towards the practical arts of the ancient.” This work has an important section on alchemy and pseudo-science findings. DIGBY (Chevalier)
Rare Caillet n°3124 ne cite pas cette édition - idem pour Dorbon - Ferguson I.213 "Digby was a member of the nucleus of experimental philosophers who afterwards founded the Royal Society" - Krivatsy n°3242. in 12, de 195pp. 1f.,

Mitelli Giuseppe Maria
BOLOGNA 1660 CA. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

[Anonyme], [Louis XIV - Mazarin]
1660. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr [Anonyme], Le Politique du temps. S.l., s.n., [1660]. Petit in-4, 90p. [Click Below for Full Description]

Panciroli, Guido
Frankfurt: Heirs of G. Schoenwetter, 1660. Hardcover. Very good. A handsome copy of Panciroli's encyclopaedic history of ancient and modern arts and technology. The first part treats the arts and techniques of antiquity, including papyrus, roads, statues, libraries, labyrinths, the pyramids, tombs, obelisks, dress and accessories such as the fibula, wine, slavery, Roman writing and writing surfaces, equitation, hunting and food production, and the performing arts, including music, musica muta (pantomime), and stagecraft. Part II, on inventions unknown to the ancients, opens with a long section on the New World, discussing its discovery, the effects of the encounter on the natives (venereal disease tops the list), American crops and products including sassafras, plantains, and many other fruits and herbs, with their uses by the Native Americans. Other sections are devoted to the history of printing in China and Europe, papermaking, sugar, alchemy, porcelain, time-pieces, bells, ciphers and codes, glasses, silk-weaving, tournaments and jousts, and watermills. "Pancirollo's work is interesting, not only as giving some notion of the state of knowledge as to the history of invention in his time, but as displaying the attitude of scholars towards the practical arts of the ancients" (John K. Mitelli, Giuseppe Maria
Peso complessivo: 3300 g.
