Belgii pars Septentrionalis communi nomine vulgo Hollandia nuneupata Continens Statum Potentissimae.

Petrus Schenk, Amsterdam - Exquisite and rare map of the Netherlands, in high detail. Includes an array of unusual features: two inset maps of areas with Dutch influence, the East Indies and a view of Batavia; and New England and Long Island, with a view of New Amsterdam. Also included is a table showing the coats of arms from the seven provinces part of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. Scale is displayed on a scroll, above which is a mini map hanging on its own scroll within a carved architectural niche. Map cleverly shows the southern most province, Limburg, instead of extending entire map south. Expert repairs to centerfold. Cracks from original viridean green. Chipping along edges, particularly the top and bottom. Petrus Schenk (c.1660%u20131711) was a German engraver and cartographer. He began his training in Amsterdam in the art of mezzotint and soon began working closely with Gerard Valck. The two took advantage of the bustling cartographic trade in the city and quickly expanded their business from portraits and prints into maps and globes. In 1700, Schenk grew the business further by moving to Leipzig, Germany and opening a shop. As his sons and grandson returned to the Netherlands to become active engravers as well, the Schenk firm developed into one of the best-known publishing houses in 18th-century Amsterdam. This map attests to Schenk's prolific production and skill in both cartographic artistry and business. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 18.5" x 23".

De Motu Animalium spontaneo Liber Unus: In quo partim Aristotelis de huius motus principio sententia illustratur, partim nova musculorum motus ratio indagatur

176, [3] pp. 8vo, cont. red morocco (joints carefully repaired), panelled in gilt, gilt fleurons in each corner, triple gilt fillet round sides, spine richly gilt, a.e.g. Paris: C. Cramoisy, 1660. First edition of a very rare book with a fine provenance; this is the first book of Petit (1617-87), physician and poet, who was a graduate of the medical school at Montpellier and a devoted Aristotelian. The present work is a defense of Aristotle's theories regarding the mechanics of the living organism against the physiological theories of Descartes. Petit's opinions ran counter to many scientists and physicians of the 17th century -- for example, Hooke, Willis, and Borelli -- who saw in Cartesian physiology exactly what Descartes had intended it to be: a method of mechanistic formulation by which traditional categories of physiological explanation could be circumvented. There is much on neural stimulation and its effect on the contraction and swelling of the muscles. Provenance: with the booklabel ("Bibliotheca Lamoniana") of Chrétien François de Lamoignon (1735-89), whose library was purchased by Payne and auctioned by him in London in 1793. Armorial bookplate and ownership inscription, dated 1795, of Robert Bland, M.D. (1740-1816), male midwife. His library was later sold by Sotheby's. Armorial bookplate of Peter Hall (1803-49), Anglican clergyman; his library was sold at Sotheby's 27 May 1850. A fine copy. .

        Relation du Pays de Jansenie

Paris,: Thierry and Barbin,, 1660.. Octavo, with a fine large engraved folding bird's-eye-view map; contemporary vellum, endpapers wearing, ms title on spine. First edition: a witty allegorical satire in the form of an imaginary voyage to a Jansenist society, by the Capuchin theologian Zacharie de Lisieux (1591 or 1596-1661).Around 1640 Jansen had controversially attempted to reassert the Augustinian doctrine of original sin and thus the necessity for grace: the Jansenist movement quickly became associated with moral rigour. It was supported by Pascal in his Lettres Provinciales, compelling Innocent X to issue the 1653 bull 'With Occasion' denouncing the movement.Published only seven years later, the Relation du Pays de Jansenie uses some very broad satire to support Pope Innocent's proclamation, denouncing the writings and influence of Jansen as synonymous with libertinage, despair and Calvinism. Thus, the people 'have very hard heads and thick skulls. Some have two hearts, a condition occasionally advanced as an explanation for their notorious insincerity' and their philosophers 'do not recognize the existence of common sense' (Manguel & Guadalupi). Detested by their neighbours, they show a predilection for secrecy, espionage, insincerity and superficiality. It is prefaced by some of the classic devices of the imaginary voyage, including a wonderfully insincere apology for the lack of detail, for which he can hardly be held responsible: he was in a great hurry and, after all, the public really only like short books. Moreover, Zacharie de Lisieux gives crucial importance to the map he reproduces which, he humbly avers, will have more impact than the Almanac, because what it lacks in detail it more than makes up for with panache.Manguel & Guadalupi, pp. 328-30.

Opera Omnia

Amsterdam: Petrum can den Berge (Petrus Montanus), 1660. First edition. With the famous engraved portrait of Weyer done by Holstein. With nine woodcut illustrations including the engraved portrait of a ten-year-old girl and depictions of medicinal plants. Thick quarto bound in recent full vellum. This is the first edition of the first collected works by Weyer, and is viewed as one of the great psychiatric classics. Weyer “pleaded for medical treatment of the mentally ill and suggested that the confessions of the so-called witches were nothing more than reports of visual and auditory hallucinations experienced under the influence of some drugs. With skill and sympathy, Weyer described the symptoms of schizophrenia, the phenomena of mass hysteria, the paranoia of homosexuals, and the significance of agitation recurring yearly on the same date” (Howells 1982, p.976). Includes Weyer’s “De Lamiis,” a book that Freud believed helped to found modern psychiatry. Freud praised Weyer’s “Praestigiis Daemonum” as one of the ten most significant books of all time.

The Rump, or A Collection of Songs and Ballads, made upon those who would be a Parliament, and were but the Rump of an House of Commons, five times dissolv'd.

London : Printed for H. Brome, and H. Marsh, at the Gun in Ivy Lane, and the Princes Arms in Chancery Lane near Fleetstreet 1660 . First Edition. Cr. 8vo 140x90mm, eng. front., [-]1, A2, B-C8, Aa8, B-D8, D-F8, H-M8, (complete according to collation given by ESTC) foremargin of frontispiece a little frayed and cropped at foot, a piece missing from blank margin of last leaf, last line of imprint cropped but still just legible, a few headlines cut close, early signature of "Jane Tempest" on title-page, old half calf, marbled boards, joints weak. Alexander Brome was a successful lawyer, but better known as a poet, and the elder brother of the bookseller, Henry Brome. He specialised in love poems in the cavalier mode, satires attacking the king's enemies and the Commonwealth government, and drinking songs in the Anacreontic tradition. The present collection was inspired by the purging of the Long Parliament in 1648 and the consequent Rump Parliament. It is heavily political in its satire but also exceedingly bawdy and scatalogical in content, with titles such as "News from Colchester. Or, A Proper new Ballad, of certain carnal passages betwixt a Quaker and a colt, at Horsley near Colchester in Essex", and "Bum-foder or Waste-Paper Proper to wipe the Nations Rump with, or your Own". It would seem to be the earliest example we have of a collection of 'literature of the streets' being reprinted from the original broadsides. ESTC R209827 Wing B4850B

New Experiments Physico-Mechanicall Touching the Spring of the Air, and its Effects

Oxford: H. Hall for Tho. Robinson, 1660. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo., (15) ff. including title-page, 399 pp. (i.e. 389 pp.), (1) p. errata, and with 1 large folding plate. Lacking half-title ("New experiments physico-mechanicall touching the air"). Disbound; some cropping affecting some catchwords and final line on p. 387, folded plate repaired. Title-page toned and a bit soiled, some mild toning or thumbing throughout. Otherwise good. Rare first edition of this landmark of scientific history, which established Boyle's fame and ushered in the era of the experimental method in science. The first important scientific book in English, Boyle's debut also signaled the beginning of the English scientific revolution. The work describes experiments carried out with an air pump designed and constructed for Boyle by Robert Hooke, and provided crucial experimental evidence leading in 1662 to the formulation of Boyle's law, which states that the volume occupied by a gas is the reciprocal of its pressure."Three years earlier [Boyle] had learned of Guericke's invention of an air pump and, immediately perceiving the scientific potentialities of the instrument, set his laboratory assistants to work designing one that had a glass receiver and was so constructed that objects could be easily inserted. Robert Hooke's successful design permitted Boyle to devise and carry out a brilliant series of experiments upon the physical nature of air: he proved that the phenomena of Torricelli's experiment were indeed caused by the air, that sound was impossible in a vacuum, that air was truly necessary for life and flame, and that air was permanently elastic" (DSB).Beyond their discrete empirical achievements, the centrality of experiments conducted with the air pump in establishing an ongoing tradition of experimental science has been emphasized recently by historians, with the present work figuring among the most important documents. New Experiments immediately established Boyle's reputation, and was the subject of no fewer than five important works within the following two years-a work by Hooke on the phenomena observed by Boyle, as well as numerous polemical tracts. * Wing B3998; Fulton 13; DSB II.378; Madan 2484; Garrison & Morton 914.
