Exercitationes Anatomicae, De Motu Cordis & Sanguinis Circulatione. Cum Duplici Indice Capitum & Rerum [On the Motion of the Heart and Blood] ; Dissertatio De Corde - (De Back)

Roterodami [Rotterdam]: Arnold Leers, 1660. Considered the most important medical work ever published, our copy is the 1660 Rotterdam edition, which includes a dissertation by Dutch physician Jacob De Back which supports Harvey's findings; De Motu Cordis was written in Latin, and published first in 1628 by William Fitzer of Frankfurt, Germany; In this small book, the English physician & researcher Doctor William Harvey announced his discovery of the circulation of blood by the heart. Harvey is the first to recognize and describe the heart's expulsion of blood during systole, its passive refilling during diastole, and the filling of the arteries during systole. His conclusions were based on years of meticulous research and observation and he illustrates his conclusions with clear evidence, thereby establishing the reality of pulmonary circulation. "Harvey's clear reasoning from the observations and precise measurements made during his purposeful experiments supplied the key for advancing knowledge of physiology and was also a model for future scientific procedure." (LeFanu, Notable Medical Books, page 63). This copy is bound in early full vellum, lightly shelf worn and aged as expected; yapped fore-edge, and a very clean and tight textblock in excellent condition; signatue in ink on ffep, dated 1898; Berlin, Germany bookseller's ticket on fep; 285p., plus index and 252p., plus index, respectively.         Belgii Novi, Angliae Novae, Et Partis Virginiae Novissima Delineatio

Amsterdam, 1660. No Binding. Near Fine. 17 1/4 x 20 ¼ inches. Fine hand color; reinforced bottom of centerfold, else fine condition. A beautiful example of a cartographic cornerstone that provided the template for the mapping of the Northeast for well into the following century. It is the earliest collectible map to show the correct shapes of both Manhattan and Long Island. Several English settlements along the Connecticut shoreline appear for the first time here as do the Swedish settlements along the Delaware River. Moreover, all of the Indian tribes that were encountered by Europeans at the time can be found on the map. The map was most likely based on a large manuscript map that was used as part of a protest by New Netherlands colonists against the policies of the Dutch West India Company, the organization that sponsored the colonization of New York. The author of the manuscript is believed to have been Adrien van der Donck, a lawyer who was an early resident of New Amsterdam and who led the protest of the colonists. The map first appeared in this reduced, printed version as separate publication in 1651. As Campbell observes, "the prototype map represents Dutch elegance at its best." In addition to its decorative qualities, the map is visually suggestive of the moment in history when European colonies were only tenuously established in the Northeast with the frontier still hovering nearby. As Campbell eloquently puts it: "Indians surrounded them (the European settlements) and from the numerous native names on the map one can almost feel the pressure keeping the settlers back." Burden 305, state 2; Stokes, I.N.P. The Iconography of Manhattan, I, pp. 143-146; Campbell, T. in Tooley, R.V. The Mapping of America, pp. 279, 283.

I Dieci libri D'Archittetura. Secundo i precetti di Vetruvio, nouamente ristampati, & accresciunti della Prattica degl'-Horologi Solari.

Venetia, Apresso il Nicolini (Francesco Valuasense), 1660. Small folio. Completely uncut in orig. well preserved boards, kept in a protective cloth-box. Title in a large woodcut-border. (12),148 pp. With more than 150 fine engraved woodcuts in the text, half-page and full-page. The content in near mint condition.. The rare second edition of this important and beautiful treatise, which constitutes a summary of Vitruvius' "De Architectura", with 150 large beautiful woodcuts. The work is a successful marriage of highly effective illustrations and concise text.Giovanni Antonio Rusconi (1520 - 1587) was a naval architect and designer of several palaces and churches in Venice. After a fire he worked on the rebuilding of the Doges' Palace supervised by Palladio. He wrote extensively on architecture and played a dominant role in the development of Renaissance architecture; his architectural reputation was however hurt after a cult developed around the architect Palladio, mainly due to his Baroque style with which the stripped down classical style of his erstwhile mentor seemed to compare badly."The most complete architectural library know to us from the sixteenth century is that of the Venetian architect Giovanni Antonio Rusconi. [...] Rusconi´s library included a variety of titles on architecture, geometry, military, agriculture, arithmetic, and poetry." (Anderson, Christy. Inigo Jones and the classical tradition, 2006, p 63)

As Campbell eloquently puts it: "Indians surrounded them (the European settlements) and from the numerous native names on the map one can almost feel the pressure keeping the settlers back."Burden 305, state 2; Stokes, I.N.P. The Iconography of Manhattan, I, pp. 143-146; Campbell, T. in Tooley, R.V. The Mapping of America, pp. 279, 283.

Second Edition (first: 1615) of this popular Dutch emblem book on divine love. The work is dedicated to the Infanta Isabella of Spain, at whose suggestion the emblems were composed. Dutch artist Van Veen studied for seven years under Federigo Zuccari at Rome. Settling in Antwerp in 1593, he began painting for the churches and public buildings. For several years, from 1596 to 1600, he numbered Rubens among his pupils. His work attracted the admiration and patronage of the Archduke Albert, who succeeded the Prince of Parma in the government of the Low Countries.         De Atramentis cujuscunque generis... in sex descriptiones digestum

London, excudebat J.M. impensis Jo.Martin. Ja.Alestry, Tho.Dicas 1660.. 4to, [16], 568 p., paper slightly browned as usual, contemporary calf, triple gilt fillet, spine gilt, neat repair at foot of spine, arms of François-Auguste De Thou and his monogram in compartments of spine, craquelure of surface affects the gilt of the armorial stamps (though only v.slightly on lower cover). Wing C425a; Duveen 115; Bonacini 315. Second edition (first printed Venice 1619). This is the only substantial early treatment of inks and their manufacture, including inks of various colours. Clair's Chronology of Printing mentions nothing on ink earlier than 1832: perhaps because Canepari's section on writing and printing inks, though valuable, is just 44 pages in a work of much wider scientific and historical interest. Thorndike found it "difficult... to classify the work under mineralogy, alchemy, technology, or natural magic" (VII, 250-52) - to which list we might add advice on health, and pharmacy. François Auguste was the eldest son of the important collector Jacques-Auguste De Thou. Neither was in fact alive when this book was printed, the son having been beheaded by order of Richelieu in 1642 for concealing his knowledge of the Cinq-Mars conspiracy. I suppose the family sometimes added his arms, as they did his father's, posthumously to books in the library, at some time before its sale in 1680. 21vf

Giambattista Borghese (1639-1717), of the powerful Sienese/ Roman family, was an important patron of the arts. He purchased the family home that now houses one of the great art collections in Italy. The binding was made by the Andreoli Bindery, which in addition to their extensive work for the Borghese family also produced bindings for Popes Alexander VII and Clement IX as well as for royalty, including Queen Christina of Sweden. The crimson morocco binding has remarkably delicate, lace-like, gold-tooled designs framing the Borghese arms. This volume contains a world map, consisting of two hemispheric maps, and continental maps of Europe, Asia, and Africa, each of which consists of four sheets. Nicolosi also published another volume that contained text and an eight-sheet map of the Americas that is not included here. The volume offered has all map sheets called for.Shirley 418; Betz 94.1
