DRYDEN, JOHN
London: Printed for William Wilson, 1659 [but circa 1691-3] - 4to, modern straight-grain green morocco rebacked, maroon leather label, gilt rules and lettering. A famous poem by John Dryden on Oliver Cromwell, first published with poems by Edmund Waller and Thomas Sprat in 1659. It was reprinted several times without Dryden's permission, including a few times under the title "An Elegy on the Usurper" by those seeking to damage Dryden's reputation. According to Pforzheimer "This edition . . . was intended for inclusion in Tonson's four-volume collection of Dryden's works, 1693. That collection now rarely occurs intact for it has almost always been broken-up for the sake of the separate pieces, particularly for the present which from the imprint was long thought to be the first separate printing of the poem." Paper a bit browned; very good copy. Macdonald, Dryden, 3f; Pforzheimer 336; NCBEL II, 441 A later separate edition, often incorrectly thought to be the first separate edition. BOTERO Giovanni - BRUSONI Girolamo
Botero scrisse molte opere, in latino e in italiano, in versi e in prosa.

One of the earliest cheques in existence, maybe the third oldest known Clayton & Morris scrivener’s cheque. In those years the calendar year began on Lady Day (25 March), so this cheque was issued on 10 March 1660. The first cheque was issued in London on 22 April 1659. It was for £10 and made payable to the bearer by Nicholas Vanacker. It was drawn on the bank of Clayton & Morris. The original cheque was sold for £1,300 at Sotheby's, London in 1976.The other known early cheques are dated 16 February 1659/60 (in the collection of the Royal Bank Of Scotland) and 27 August 1660; and the earliest held by the Bank of England is dated 8 December 1660. All of these were also drawn by Vanacker on his account with Clayton & Morris. They were the leading bankers of the Restoration, with offices at Cornhill in the City of London: 'Unlike their contemporary goldsmith–bankers, Clayton and Morris never invested in royal moneylending, nor did they traffic in foreign exchange. Instead, their business was centred in the private market of lending money to landowners. As civil wars and interregnum disrupted credit in the countryside, many landowners, including royalists in search of money to pay compounding fees, turned to London for loans. After 1660 the money market remained centred in the capital, and Clayton and Morris seized the opportunity to dominate it. PASCAL, Blaise.
Paris: Guillaume Desprez, 1659. First edition. First edition, extremely rare (one of about 120 copies printed), of one of Pascal's most brilliant works. "Pascal devoted himself during 1658 and the first part of 1659 to the perfection of the "theory of indivisibles," an ancestor of the integral calculus. In 1658, after using the method of indivisibles to solve several infinitesimal problems relating to the cycloid, he proposed the problems he had solved as a challenge to other mathematicians, then announced his own superior solutions in four letters published in December 1658 and January 1659 under the pseudonym A. Dettonville. These pamphlets were collected in February 1659 under the above title. The structure of this work is very complex, with the first letter (Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur de Carcavy) containing five separately paginated sections and the remaining three letters (Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur A. D. D. S. ..., Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur De Sluze ..., and Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur Huggyens ([i.e., Huygens]) appearing in inverse order of their composition" (Norman). In a diagram (fig. 26) in the treatise Traité des Sinus du quart de Cercle, Pascal introduced what Leibniz later called the 'characteristic triangle' and used to establish the differential calculus. Pascal made us of it "to determine the sum of the sines (ordinates) of a portion of the curve, that is, the area un … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOTERO Giovanni - BRUSONI Girolamo
Botero scrisse molte opere, in latino e in italiano, in versi e in prosa.

SCHUPP, Johann Balthasar.
Altena, gedruckt bey Victor de Leeu, 1659. 12mo. 1 Bl., 70 S.; 48 S. Pergament d. - 2: VD 17 23:251334Y; vgl. Dünnhaupt 72.1 u. Vogt (Schupps Streitschriften, in NDL) … [Click Below for Full Description]
