Wear and imperfections from age and use. 1659 Essays of Michel de Montaigne in French Renaissance Philosophy Humanism Â"The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself.Â" ― Michel de Montaigne, The Complete Essays First published in 1580, the Essays of Michel de Montaigne were a collection of essays and writings on a variety of topics and content. Montaigne was rather decisive in his rhetoric and used various Ancient Greek, Latin, and Italian texts as examples and references, such as Lucretius and Plutarch quotations. Montaigne himself stated that the goal of his essays was to describe man with Â'utter frankness and honesty.Â' According to the scholar Paul Oskar Kristeller, "the writers of the period were keenly aware of the miseries and ills of our earthly existence". Montaigne sought to break man down into his basic features, which, at the time, was extreme volatility. He wrote on marriage being an absolute necessity for raising children, but he also quoted, in the Â'Essays,Â' that Â"Marriage is like a cage; one sees the birds outside desperate to get in, and those inside desperate to get out." PASCAL, Blaise
Guillaume Desprez, Paris, 1659. First edition, extremely rare (one of about 120 copies printed), of one of Pascal's most brilliant works. "Pascal devoted himself during 1658 and the first part of 1659 to the perfection of the "theory of indivisibles," an ancestor of the integral calculus. In 1658, after using the method of indivisibles to solve several infinitesimal problems relating to the cycloid, he proposed the problems he had solved as a challenge to other mathematicians, then announced his own superior solutions in four letters published in December 1658 and January 1659 under the pseudonym A. Dettonville. These pamphlets were collected in February 1659 under the above title. The structure of this work is very complex, with the first letter (Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur de Carcavy) containing five separately paginated sections and the remaining three letters (Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur A. D. D. S. ., Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur De Sluze ., and Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur Huggyens ([i.e., Huygens]) appearing in inverse order of their composition" (Norman). In a diagram (fig. 26) in the treatise Traité des Sinus du quart de Cercle, Pascal introduced what Leibniz later called the 'characteristic triangle' and used to establish the differential calculus. Pascal made us of it "to determine the sum of the sines (ordinates) of a portion of the curve, that is, the area under this portion. I … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rushworth, John, comp.
Pr. by Tho. Newcomb for George Thomason 1659?1701, London. Rushworth (1612??90), a partisan of Cromwell and Parliament, compiled one of the most famous and still sought-after assemblages of documents on the history of England during the early Stuart period and the Civil War era. Biased though it be, the work is a major source for historians, both amateur and professional, and for students of English law. For the latter, in addition to the obvious parliamentary proceedings, there is the noteworthy inclusion at the end of vol. III of the "Star Chamber Reports" that compose the appendix, and the devotion of all of vol. VIII to the trial of Thomas, Earl of Stratford; the set in hand has the issue of vol. I having no map but two plates, both present. As our caption notes, this vast repository purports to have been made as "a bare narrative" of its "fact[s]"; but it now resonates with a richness far beyond mere chronicle. => It repays both extended and "dip-in" reading for pleasure. Folio (31.5 cm; 12.5"). 5 parts in 8 vols. I: Frontis. port., [15] ff., 691, [1 (blank)], 57, [1 (blank)] pp. II: Frontis. port., [5] ff., pp. 1?617, [1 (blank)] p., pp. 717?884 pp., 1 plt. DALEN, Cornelis van, the younger (c. 1638-1664) after an original drawing
: 1659 : Amsterdam : Engraved portrait, image 302 x 228mm; plate mark 318 x 238mm; leaf 408 x 288mm; slightly creased but a fine impression with good margins. : A fine portrait of Franciscus Deleboe Sylvius (1614-1672) by 'an artist of considerable stature, who engraved some of the most powerful portraits of his time' (Encyclopaedia Britannica). It is unusual and perhaps significant that van Dalen here takes credit for an image with his full name and 'junior'. More usually he signs his work with his initials, as does his father of the same name and their work is therefore mostly indistinguishable. This portrait was probably commissioned by Sylvius himself on being appointed professor at Leyden university in 1658. Sylvius had a large collection of paintings, analysed by Pamela H. Smith in relation to his role in shaping and institutionalising the practices of the 'new philosophy'. Sylvius' taste in art, she argues, reveals an uncertainty about the status of knowledge gained through the senses. Smith reproduces this portrait, as well as a painting of 1672 by Frans van Mieris of Sylvius and his second wife playing the lute. ('Science and Taste; painting, passions, and the new philosophy in seventeenth-century Leiden', Isis 90 (1999) 421-461).

[ EMBLEMATA]. SAAVEDRA-FAJARDO, Diego de.
Amsterdam : Johann Jansson, 1659 In-12, titre-frontispice, (22)-831-(4) pages.

Prijs: Euro 4.350,- (incl. lijst).

RARE 1659-1661 SECOND EDITION OF DESCARTES'S GEOMETRY, GREATLY EXPANDED FROM THE 1649 FIRST EDITION BY THE ADDITION OF IMPORTANT COMMENTARY: "This edition served as the basic textbook for the generation that, in the last quarter of the century, took the lead in introducing differential and integral calculus" (Jahnke). A beautiful copy in contemporary vellum. On November 10, 1619, "the most important event of Descartes's life occurred... Descartes spent the whole day snugly tucked up in bed, dreaming (or daydreaming) about the nature of the world... [and] it was on this day that Descartes first saw the road to his own philosophy and also had one of the greatest mathematical insights of all time. Any point on the graph is represented by two numbers, corresponding to the distances along the x axis and up the y axis. In three dimensions, you just have a z axis as well. Cella, Giovanni Pietro:
Ex Typographia Francisci Monetae ., Romae [Rome] 1659 - 8vo., pp. 9 [1]. Engraved title-page. Woodcut head-piece and initial. Side- and lower margins of title-page extended at an early date, very good, bound in modern marbled wrappers, old (18th-cent.?) stamp. Titled ?the Roman is Lebanese?, this oration is on the Miracle of the Snow, the mid-fourth-century miracle which saw snow fall one August night in Rome, on the site of the future Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The theme of the author?s talk is how, with this miracle, Lebanese weather came to the city. The encouragement to imaginative displacement between the Italian city and the Middle East is interesting. The oration was given at Rome?s church of Santa Maria in Campitelli. IT\ICCU\RMLE\058570 (one copy). The same copy (at Biblioteca Casanatense) on OCLC (01/18). [Attributes: Soft Cover]
