PASCAL, Blaise.
Paris: Guillaume Desprez, 1659. <p>First edition, extremely rare (one of about 120 copies printed), of one of Pascal's most brilliant works. "Pascal devoted himself during 1658 and the first part of 1659 to the perfection of the "theory of indivisibles," an ancestor of the integral calculus. In 1658, after using the method of indivisibles to solve several infinitesimal problems relating to the cycloid, he proposed the problems he had solved as a challenge to other mathematicians, then announced his own superior solutions in four letters published in December 1658 and January 1659 under the pseudonym A. Dettonville. These pamphlets were collected in February 1659 under the above title. The structure of this work is very complex, with the first letter (<em>Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur de Carcavy</em>) containing five separately paginated sections and the remaining three letters (<em>Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur A. D. D. S.</em> ..., <em>Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur De Sluze</em> ..., and <em>Lettre de A. Dettonville à Monsieur Huggyens</em> ([i.e., Huygens]) appearing in inverse order of their composition" (Norman). In a diagram (fig. 26) in the treatise <em>Traité des Sinus du quart de Cercle</em>, Pascal introduced what Leibniz later called the 'characteristic triangle' and used to establish the differential calculus. Pascal made us of it "to determine the sum of the sines (ordinates) of a portion … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOTERO Giovanni - BRUSONI Girolamo
Botero scrisse molte opere, in latino e in italiano, in versi e in prosa.

SCHUPP, Johann Balthasar.
Altena, gedruckt bey Victor de Leeu, 1659. 12mo. 1 Bl., 70 S.; 48 S. Pergament d. - 2: VD 17 23:251334Y; vgl. XXV QUERIES]
London: printed for L. Chapman at the Crown in Popes-head-Ally. i.e. 1660, 1659. 4to., (2) + 14pp., interleaved with blanks, some inner margins strengthened, bound in early 20th century parchment-backed boards, spine lettered. A very good copy from the early 20th century library of Fairfax of Cameron> with the armorial bookplate. First edition. During the year before the eventual Restoration there appeared a whole raft of pamphlets published in pursuance of the 'Good Old Cause', i.e. some sort of republicanism. 'The republicans' best changes still lay in stirring trouble outside parliament, and from February onward they made considerable use of the presses. In the course of 1659 the bookseller George Thomason collected 652 separate pamphlets, compared with 282 in 1658. The theme of tract after tract was 'the Good Old Cause' - the cause for which the Civil Wars had been fought and won, but whose purity had since been lost through the selfish ambitions of sectional interests. These pamphleteers were very coy about just what the good old cause consisted in, because they were courting quite a range of Richard's political opponents, whose particular interests were not identical. Until his regime was totally on the rocks they refrained from calling openly for its overthrow, and despite their strong republican overtones they were generally vague as to what specific form of government they favoured. They professed friendship towards the army as a whole, and they sought to engage the support of radical Independents and sectaries who leaned towards an ascendancy of the saints as well … [Click Below for Full Description]
