Clüver, Philipp.
Amsterdam, Elzevir, 1659. 12mo. 352 (including the engraved title-page), 70, (10) pp. With 3 folding engraved plates and 1 folding letterpress table. Contemporary blindstamped vellum over thin wooden boards with handwritten spine title and green ribbons. First edition thus as published by the Elzeviers of Amsterdam: a compact copy of this prominent work by the founder of historical geography, the German historian and cartographer Clüver (1580-1622) which first appeared in 1624. It is divided into 6 books, with the first book giving an account of the planet Earth, including a discussion of its climate zones, its rotation, remarks about navigation at sea and signs of the zodiac, while the following books describe various countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The plates show circles of longitude and latitude, the winds of the Mediterranean, cardinal directions and measures of distance. Also, the present edition includes the "Breviarium totius orbis terrarum" by the Flemish geographer Peter Bertius (1565-1629), further describing various countries and providing a list of Roman and Holy Roman Emperors. The small 12mo format is a characteristic of the books issued by the famous Elzevir printing and publishing house and soon became very desirable among bibliophiles. - With shelfmarks to the pastedown and the lower flyleaf. Binding rubbed, brownstained. From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel, with his signed and stamped ownership, dated 1982, to the flyleaf. Willems 1242. Cf. Graesse II, 204 (1729 ed.). Polwheile, Theophilus
London: Printed for Thomas Johnson. Condition: Very Good. First edition, 1659. 8vo, mid 19th century brown calf, (48) 424 (46) pp. including 8 pp. publisher's catalog, errata leaf at end, text clean, bright, collated complete, ownership signature of a B. Fuller in an old hand on bottom of title page, probably not that of Bishop William Fuller, but perhaps. Polwheile was a minister based mainly in Tiverton; the year after this was published, in the Restoration of 1660, he was ejected from his ministerial position for his religious views and for his sympathies with the Independents, who advocated for local control and for a certain freedom of religion for those who were not Catholic; because of this, he was often in trouble until the Declaration of Indulgence by James II in 1687, establishing freedom of religion in England (James II being Catholic). Polwheile died in 1689. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

(Libri Cat., Auction 1861, nr.3138) Vincenzo Viviani (Florence 1622 ? 1702) was a disciple of Galileo and lived with him in Arcetri for three years. ?Throughout his life, one of Viviani's main interests was in ancient Greek mathematics. As early as 1646, while collaborating with Torricelli, he was also working on a project to restore the work of Aristaeus the Elder. Pappus gave Aristaeus great credit for a work entitled Five Books concerning Solid Loci which had been lost. (Solid Loci is the Greek term for conic sections.) MARIETTE, PIERRE
ONE OF THE EARLIEST MAPS TO DEPICT ALL 5 GREAT LAKES - Amerique SeptentrionaleAll of North America, with California depicted as an island. Engraved by Pierre mariette, published by Nicolas Sanson in 1659. First map to name Lakes Superior and Ontario. Burden calls this a "landmark map of North America. It was drawn, with his usual care, using the sinusoidal projection which is sometimes known by the name Sanson-Flamstead. It is, perhaps, most important for being the first printed map to delineate the five Great Lakes in a recognizable form... To the west, S Fe, Navajo, Apache, Taosij and others all appear for the first time. The first is incorrectly placed on the west bank of the Rio Grande, here again flowing to the south-west. These were the first advances in the geography of this region for some time. The information was derived from the travels of Father Alonso de Benavides in the late 1620's... California as an island is of the Briggs type with some important alterations; Sanson introduces four placenames from the de Laet map of 1630, C. de Fortune, C. de Pinos, C. de S.Martin and C. de Galera..." There were three states of the map, of which this is the third. The first state, of which only two examples were known, had no land to the north-west of California; the second state, also quite uncommon, added coastline at that point, and eliminated a few placenames north of California; the third state is the same as the second, except that Lake Ontario has been shaded to match the other Great Lakes. SEVERINO, Marco Aurelio.
Commentarius in Theophrasti Eresii libellum huius argumenti... Rarissimo: censito in sole 4 Biblioteche pubbliche italiane. Krivatsy 11051. 1659. Very nice condition especially for the age of the book. A few worm holes through a few pages. One piece of small tape applied to one of the pages over a worm hole to keep it together. Pages look great, and are sturdy with no tears or issues. I believe the pages were all documents because I see folds on them. There are 185 numbered leaves. Most pages are written on both sides, but only one side is counted, so if you pretty much double the leaves, you would have approximately 360 pages. Some ink has bleed through to the other side, which is normal. This would have happened when written. The calligraphy is absolutely stunning ! Some autographs of early Notaries as you can see. To give you an idea , I think one leaf could be sold for at least a few hundred dollars, although I would never separate the pages from the book. Book measures about 8 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches and is about 1.5 inches thick. Pages are watermarked with a double headed eagle and are consistent with the date.
Magnifico esemplare. Etching and drypoint, 1659, signed and dated at lower center. Example of the fourth state. A very rich impression, printed with tone on contemporary laid paper with the usual watermark for this state (Hinterding p. 498), trimmed to the platemark, perfect conditions. The work depicts the episode narrated in the Acts of the Apostles. A cripple, a ragged beggar, sitting on the floor and stretches out his hand for alms near the temple door. Peter leverage over him his hands in a gesture of blessing, John is with him and gather around them a small crowd of onlookers. This was one of the first cases of healing operated by Peter and led to the first confrontation between the apostles and the Jewish priests. Magnificent example. HONDIUS JODOCUS
Claude de la Riviere, Lyon. Copper engraving, mm 415x555, colored, signed N. Picart fecit bottom left. Very rare "carte a figures" from "Les Estats, Empires, Royaumes et Principautez du Monde" by Pierre d'Avity (1673-1735). He first published his work in 1614, but it was continually enlarged, even after his death. The 1659 posthumous edition was the first to contain four maps of the continents. Although it bears the name of Jodocus Hondius, the map is based upon the second state of Janssonius' map of 1623 even if the first derivative map is the Hondius, 1618. The map is embellished by vessels and 10 vignettes with costumes at the borders and 6 view on top (Lisbon, Toledo, London, Paris, Rome and Venice). Restored little hole at scottish border, otherwise very good condition. Some plate tone. Bottom left blank margin added (10 cm). cartografia.

Pages are watermarked with a double headed eagle and are consistent with the date. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 8.0px 0.0px; font: 17.0px Arial; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000}p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 14.0px; font: 17.0px Arial; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000}p.p3 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 12.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 17.0px 'Times New Roman'; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000}span.s1 {font-family: 'Arial'; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 17.00pt; font-kerning: none}span.s2 {font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 17.00pt; font-kerning: none}span.s3 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Walker, Obadiah]; Smith, John
J.G. for R. Royston; E. Cotes for George Eversden, London. First editions of two scarce seventeenth-century English works on rhetoric, one an influence on John Dryden's poetic style, the other frequently cited by Samuel Johnson in his great dictionary of the English language. Obadiah Walker's 1659 Art of Oratory divides rhetoric into its constituent parts: invention, elocution, figures of speech, style, recitation, pronunciation, and action. He advises speakers to play with the order and structure of their arguments: "Nothing is more Orator-like than this . . . to agitate, spread and mould the same lump of matter, after many diverse fashions; to change and invert the figure, parts, order, ornaments, of our speech . . . that it seems still diverse, and quite another thing." Tina Skouen has demonstrated Dryden's debt to Walker's principles of elocution in "The Vocal Wit of John Dryden" (Rhetorica, 2006). Bound after Walker, John Smith's 1657 Mysterie was a popular glossary of dozens of rhetorical terms, from aenigma to zeugma, each illustrated with examples from scriptural, classical, and English texts. Epistrophe, "a repetition of the same word or sound in the ends of divers members of a sentence," is illustrated with ten quotations in Latin and English, including the famous line from Corinthians: "When I was a childe, I spake as a childe, I understood as a childe, I thought as a childe." The influence of Smith's Mysterie reached far into English letters, most notably as a source for rhetorical glosses in Johnson's dictionary, where the book is cited simply as "Smith's Rheto … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schoppe, Caspar.
Amstelodami, 1659. Caspar Schoppe (27 May 1576 – 19 November 1649) was a German controversialist and scholar. He was born at Neumarkt in the upper Palatinate and studied at several German universities. He converted to Roman Catholicism in about 1599, after reading the Annales Ecclesiastici of Baronius. Schoppe obtained the favour of Pope Clement VIII, and distinguished himself by the virulence of his writings against the Protestants. He became involved in a controversy with Joseph Justus Scaliger, formerly his intimate friend, and others; wrote Ecclesiasticus auctoritati Jacobi regis oppositus (1611), an attack upon James I of England; and in Classicum belli sacri (1619) urged the Catholic princes to wage war upon the Protestants. In about 1607, Schoppe entered the service of Ferdinand, archduke of Styria, afterwards Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor, who found him very useful in rebutting the arguments of the Protestants, and who sent him on several diplomatic errands. According to Pierre Bayle, he was almost killed by some Englishmen at Madrid in 1614, and again fearing for his life he left Germany for Italy in 1617, afterwards taking part in an attack upon the Jesuits. ; Following the other books; Paradoxia literaria, Amsterdam 1659, 6 pages, 94 pages,------ Auctuarium ad Grammaticam philosophicam ejusque rudimenta, Amsterdam 1659, 88 pages. --- In … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wear and imperfections from age and use. 1659 Essays of Michel de Montaigne in French Renaissance Philosophy Humanism Â"The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself.Â" ― Michel de Montaigne, The Complete Essays First published in 1580, the Essays of Michel de Montaigne were a collection of essays and writings on a variety of topics and content. Montaigne was rather decisive in his rhetoric and used various Ancient Greek, Latin, and Italian texts as examples and references, such as Lucretius and Plutarch quotations. Montaigne himself stated that the goal of his essays was to describe man with Â'utter frankness and honesty.Â' According to the scholar Paul Oskar Kristeller, "the writers of the period were keenly aware of the miseries and ills of our earthly existence". Montaigne sought to break man down into his basic features, which, at the time, was extreme volatility. He wrote on marriage being an absolute necessity for raising children, but he also quoted, in the Â'Essays,Â' that Â"Marriage is like a cage; one sees the birds outside desperate to get in, and those inside desperate to get out."
