Plinius Caecilius Secundus, Gaius
Plinius achtete besonders dara … [Click Below for Full Description]

Browne, Thomas
London: Printed by Tho. Milbourn For Andrew Crook, 1659. 1605-1682 Octavo, 6 x 3.75 inches. Fifth edition. A,A-T8, A-E8. Engraved frontispiece by William Marshall. This copy is bound in later smooth calf, gilt ruled edges, all edges gilt. gilt spine with a red. leather label. Hand marbled endsheets, gilt dentelles, quite a nice copy. It is far from clear that Thomas Browne ever considered publishing Religio Medici, his first and most influential work. Written during his medical apprenticeship in the mid-1630s, this essay on the religion of a doctor was (in typical fashion) circulated in multiple manuscripts among friends for seven years until 1642, when Andrew Crooke, an enterprising publisher of controversialist writing, obtained it and printed it anonymously, without the author's permission or knowledge. What Browne would later describe as "a private exercise directed to myself" was an immediate commercial success, and Crooke quickly brought out a second edition. Browne, meanwhile, had wind of a work about to be published by the colourful savant Sir Kenelm Digby, apparently responding to Browne's essay. He immediately set about revising the pirated text for authorised publication in 1643. Together with Digby's Observations upon Religio Medici, the 1643 edition, now with Browne's name on it, established his reputation in English and Continental writing. Religio Medici has been described as spiritual autobiography, but it has in fact only occasional resemblance to the true seventeenth-century exponents of the form like Lucy Hutchinson and John Aubrey. Although Browne's … [Click Below for Full Description]

OCLC notes copies at Columbia, Harvard, New York Public Library, Linda Hall Library, Michigan, Wisconsin, Göttingen, Oxford, Edinburgh, and Marburg. This book has not appeared at auction in at least the last thirty years, according to American Book Prices Current. Late nineteenth century vellum over decorative boards, gilt cloth spine label. Small quarto. Numerous woodcut diagrams in text. Title-page lightly foxed, light dampstain at lower corner through part of the text. Bottom corner of V1 torn away and reinforced with new paper. At twenty-one, he became a reader of literature, philosophy, and theology in the faculty of his order at Ferrara, but left three years later for health reasons and went to Bologna. At the University of Bologna, under the guidance of Bonaventura Cavalieri (1598-1647), he developed a strong interest in mathematics. Cavalieri was so appreciative of his abilities that he entrusted Angeli with the task of correcting and publishing his last work, Exercitationes geometricae sex (1647). Angeli was offered the opportunity to succeed Cavalieri as professor of mathematics, but turned it down. After various appointments, he became in 1663 professor of mathematics at the University of Padua, a post that had been held by Galileo, and he remained there until his death. Riccati was one of his pupils.Angeli's mathematical works were on infinitesi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Scott, Thomas]
London: Printed for John Garfield, 1659. First published in 1620 as "Vox populi" when it was suppressed by Royal Command. LACKS the portrait, pp. [6], 31. 1 vols. Sm. 4to. Trade in Spanish America and the West Indies. Acting as Spain's ambassador to England Count Gondomar was to negociate with King James in an effort to reduce the British attacks upon the Spanish possessions in America and in the West Indies and to discourage them from trading there. He was also to keep the British from financing Spain's enemies. He created ill feeling between the King and the Lower House, put an end to the attempt for a match between the Prince of Wales and a Spanish Infanta, and according to this report by Scott kept the British from "furnishing their Navie," in order to reduce their interference in West Indian trade. He drew a great deal of criticism in England for his active part in the destruction of Sir Walter Raleigh. Gondomar was an avid collector of printed books and manuscripts and his library became the Royal Library at Madrid. Dedication signed John Rowland. Wing S2083; Sabin 78362. Later calf gilt. Spine and extremities rubbed, title and final leaf backed and soiled, some staining, especially of "E" gathering , repairs in text made with tissue, a few losses of letters, generally not affecting comprehension, else very good.

Pliny (C. Plinii Caecilii)
Elzeviriana (Elsevier), Amsterdam, 1659. "Editio Nova" (New Edition), annotated/edited by Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn (Latinized to Boxhornius on the title page), who had died 6 years earlier. Boxhorn was an important linguist before it was a separate science; he was the first to propose the existence of Proto-Indoeuropean, which he called Scythian. This is a 16mo volume with rather small type, bound in full vellum with a leather title piece. Good plus; the vellum is warped so that the front cover has begun to separate, and the front pastedown is torn. Has all-edge gilt but the top is quite dull. 404 pp. + index. Owner's names on the obverse of ffep and facing page; one of these has left a note, "collates perfect". (I didn't check.) The text is free of any writing or foxing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

DONCKER, Hendrik (1625/26-1699)
Amsterdam: Hendrick Doncker, 1659. Amsterdam: Hendrick Doncker, 1659. Single sheet, float-mounted and framed (framed size: 29 2/8 x 33 inches). A fine engraved map of the Caribbean, the title within an elaborate historiated cartouche lower left, rhumb lines, the ocean decorated with a galleon and a small compass rose, all with beautiful original hand-colour in outline (one or two pale stains). HENDRIK DONCKER'S EXCEPTIONALLY RARE MAP OF THE CARIBBEAN First state, from Doncker's celegrated "De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Waereld", and derived from Hessel Gerritsz's map of circa 1631 which is one of the first sea charts depicting North America to use Gerard Mercator's projection. Virtually unaltered it shows Staten Landt near Tierra del Fuego bearing a completed coastline following Hendrick Brouwer's voyage of 1642 to 1643. However, the map also illustrates Doncker's independent thought towards its content. Two distinct features are the pronounced easterly sweep of the southeast coast, and an unusually prominent 'R. de S.Petro' feeding an enlarged Apalachee Bay. The map was published in three different states. In state 2 of the map, published in 1672, the cartouche lacks the Native American figure, while the 1676 plate is larger in size. A bookseller in Amsterdam from the age of 22, Doncker ran an extremely successful business for more than fifty years: a publisher of the "most popular sets of maritime works published in Amersterdam during the Golden Age" (Koeman), including pilot guides, sea atlases, and textbooks on the art of navigation. De flesta bilagor som åtföljde den latinska uppagan är uteslutna ur den svenska. Peter Julius Coyet (1618-77) var en av stormaktstidens skickligaste diplomater och hade själv deltagit vid fredsförhandlingarna i Roskilde.
