BIÖRENKLOU, Mattias.
Utan ort, 1659. 4:o. 112 s. Enstaka småfläckar. Tagen ur band. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. VD17 14:052469M. Warmholtz 8361, not. MENGOLI, Pietro.
Very rare first edition, and a fine copy from the library of Pietro Riccardi, of this important work on limits of geometrical figures. In this work Mengoli "set up the basic rules of the calculus thirty years before Newton and Leibniz. Both of these were influenced by his contribution, in the case of Leibniz the influence was direct as he read Mengoli's work while in the case of Newton he knew of it indirectly through studying Wallis." (MacTutor History of Mathematics). <br/></br> "In the 'Geometriae speciosae elementa' (1659), Mengoli set out a logical arrangement of the concepts of limit and definite integral that anticipated the work of nineteenth-century mathematicians. In establishing a rigorous theory of limits, he considered a variable quantity as a ratio of magnitudes and hence needed to consider only positive limits. He then made the following definitions: a variable quantity that can be greater than any assignable number is called 'quasi-infinite'; a variable quantity that can be smaller than any positive number is 'quasi-nil'; and a variable quantity that can be both smaller than any number larger than a given positive number <i>a</i> and greater than any number smaller than <i>a</i> is 'quasi-<i>a</i>.' <br/></br> Using these precise concepts of the infinite, the infinitesimal, and the limit, and working from simple inequalities valid between numerical ratios, he demonstrated (as Agostini recognized by translating his obscure exposition into modern symbols and terminology) the properties of the limit of the sum and the product, and showed that the properties of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Da Foligno, la Compagnia di Sant'Orsola venne fondata anche a Vescia e poi a Pergola. Madre Paola morì a Foligno il 20 luglio del 1647 e venne deposta nell'oratorio di Sant'Orsola.

Lucretius, Titus Carus
London: Printed for Thomas Sawbridge at the Three Flewer-de-luces in little Britain, and Anthony Stephens Bookseller near the Th, 1659. 95-52 B.C. Octavo, 7.6 x 4.5 inches. f Third edition. (a*)4, Ù2, (A)-(D)4, A-Z4, Aa-Ee4, (a)-(h)4, I2.(This copy has an extra blank bound after the title page.) The engraved frontispiece is bound opposite the title. This copy is bound in contemporary calfskin, and has been rebacked. This translation was prepared by Thomas Creech (1659-1700). The prefatory material contains commendatory poems by John Evelyn, Nathaniel Tate, Thomas Otway, and Aphra Behn among others, many of which were added after the first and second editions and this, the third edition contains the first appearance of several poems. The influence of Lucretius can be seen in Pope's 'Essay on Man.' Lucretius was also favorite reading of Shelley, Wordsworth, and Tennyson. "Creech's translation of Lucretius vied in popularity with Dryden's Virgil and Pope's Homer. The son of one of his friends is reported to have said that the translation was made in Creech's daily walk round the parks in Oxford in sets of fifty lines, which he would afterwards write down in his chamber and correct at leisure. [.] When Dryden published his translations from Theocritus, Lucretius, and Horace, he disclaimed in the preface any intention of robbing Creech 'of any part of that commendation which he has so justly acquired,' and referred to his predecessor's 'excellent annotations, which I have often reprinted in the last century, and was included in the edition of the British poets which was issued … [Click Below for Full Description]

FLUDD, Robert
London: Printed for Humphrey Moseley,, 1659. Written first in Latin, and afterwards thus rendred into English. Folio (272 × 185 mm), in 2 parts, part 2 with separate dated title page on leaf R4r. Twentieth-century half morocco, unlettered, marbled sides and endpapers. Lacks initial blank. Woodcut title vignettes, woodcuts in the text. Neat ownership inscription and faint inkstamp of the Scottish folklorist Rev. J. B. Mackenzie, Minister of Kenmore 1872-1911, at head and blank fore-margin of title. Trimmed a little close at head, very occasionally shaving the headline, minor dampstaining at extreme lower edge of first few leaves, a very good copy. First English edition of Fludd's last work, Philosophia Moysaica, the Latin version published posthumously at Gouda in 1638, the English translation said to have been Fludd's own work, an "explicit, detailed and highly organized Neoplatonist-Cabalist-alchemical interpretation of the universe" (Huffman, William, Robert Fludd and the end of the Renaissance, London: Routledge, 1988, 105). "Fludd was a devoutly Christian Neoplatonist, or, as he would call himself, a Mosaical Philosopher, since he begins with what he believes to be infallible principles delivered from God directly to Moses and his followers. Since he made some unique contributions to his grand synthesis of knowledge, over and above what was formulated originally by the Renaissance Florentine Neoplatonists, he felt justified in calling his philosophy 'Fluddean' as well as Mosaical" (Huffman, 104). The work includes Fludd's defence of his position on … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fludd, Robert.
London: Printed for Humphrey Mosely, at the Prince's Armes in St. Paul's Churchyard, 1659. FIRST EDITION. Ex-libris, withdrawn (rather bad form by Harvard as it was originally bequeathed in 1875 by James Walker, DD, a former president of the college, whose plate remains on the front pastedown); rebound in plain brown cloth; much foxing, browning and other discoloration throughout the text but collates complete without textual loss. Last three leaves very browned and near detached. [vi], 300 pages with twenty figures of an esoteric nature and collates as complete. Wing F1391. With special title page at beginning of the second section. A translation of the Philosophia Moysaica and considered a true rarity. In plain brown cloth, quarto. A GOOD COPY, but must emphasize the fragility of this volume and the care needed to preserve it.

Anonymous.
no publisher/printer, 1659. A satire on Sir John Barkstead, one of the "regicides" who tried and executed Charles I. Barkstead was one of the commissioners at the trial and in his career was also a major-general, a favorite of Cromwell, and lieutenant of the Tower of London. In 1662 it was his turn to meet the executioner, professing his belief in the lawfulness of his actions. There exist at least four different editions of this work. In this edition, line 9 of the title begins "VVhere" and line 19 has "Parliament, Council of State, and Army."

Harrington, James
The only early edition of the work which J.G.A. Pocock numbered among Harrington's "most ambitious", appearing soon after his 'Oceana' and in part its forceful abridgement, propelling Harrington into "the mainstream of national political argument". Early 3/4 calf, rubbed, front hinge strained but firm, imprint shaved and top and bottom margins cut close, the main text unaffected; a good copy. Printed by J.C. for Henry Fletcher, at the three Gilt Cups [etc.], London, 1659.

Cleveland, John
Printed: 1659. 1613-1658 Octavo, 5.6 x 3.6 inches. First edition. A2-8, B-I8, K4. This copy lacks the portrait. This copy is a little dirty, the edges are slightly trimmed. It is bound in nineteenth century quarter calfskin and corners with marbled paper boards. The corners are worn and the paper is dirty. This volume begins a new series of Cleveland, which continued, for a few years, to be published concurrently with the regular editions of his works, and was finally incorporated in the edition of 1687. The editor of the collection, E. Williamson, in his epistle 'to the discerning reader' claims to have been a friend of the poet, from whom he received the manuscripts which he here publishes. In his words Cleveland stated to him that 'most of his former printed Poems were truly his own, except such as have been lately added, to make up the volume." Thinks can hardly refer to the borrowings from Fletcher, which appeared the same year as the present publication, since Cleveland died the previous year. The editor admits, both on the title and in his epistle, that he has included some pieces by authors other than Cleveland. The collection contains thirty-six pieces in all. Among them is a Latin version of 'The Rebel Scot,' the original of which had always been included among Cleveland's poems. Four different elegies on Ben Jonson are taken from 'Jonsonus Virbius,' a collection of elegies on Jonson, which was published after his death in 1638. In that volume only one of them, that beginning 'Who first reform'd our stage of justest laws,' is credited to Cleveland; of the other th … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Rushworth
George Thomason c. 1659., London - Contemporary full blind-lined calf boards, rebacked expertly in six compartments of raised blind-lined bands, gilt red and green morocco labels on two and four respectively, gilt text on six, edges marbled. , A contemporary work written to support the Parliamentarians under Cromwell in the English Civil War. This edition is a later state. This can be determined by the detail given to the illustrations on the double page map; in particular the detail given to the ships. The early states have very detailed ships whereas the later states have ships that are sparsely illustrated.??Full of vastly curious and valuable matter? (Bp. Warburton), Rushworth?s Historical Collections narrates a turbulent episode of 17th century English history, when the English Civil War was breaking out. Throughout his narrative, Rushworth shows a partiality towards the side of Parliament. His narrative also issues a warning of the potential chaos and destruction that developments in the British Isles might lead to. The important folding map is untitled and attributed to Wenceslas Hollar (Baynton-Williams, ?New Worlds,? 83), juxtaposing a map of the British Isles with a view of the Battle of Prague ? effectively comparing the Thirty Years? War that was devastating Central Europe with the Civil War that was engulfing England, warning the English of the consequences of civil disorder. The map in very good condition published on laid paper with a handsome watermark. John Rushworth (1612-1690) was an English lawyer, historian and politician who sat on the House of Commons … [Click Below for Full Description]

RAHN, Johann Heinrich, Landvogt zu Kyburg
Four folding printed tables & numerous woodcut diagrams in the text. 6 p.l. (two of these preliminary leaves are mis-bound at end), 188 pp., 4 leaves of errata at end. Small 4to, attractive antique calf, panelled in gilt, gilt fleurons in each corner, spine gilt. Zurich: J.J. Bodmer, 1659. First edition and an absolutely complete copy of this rare and noteworthy mathematical book; our copy has all four folding printed tables (most copies described in OCLC seem to have only three) and an extra leaf of errata not present in the Macclesfield copy (sale, Sotheby's London, 25 Oct. 2005, lot 1705, £12,000 including premium). In this book on page 73, Rahn first introduced the symbol "÷" in print "as a sign of division; (2) the Archimedean spiral for involution; (3) the double epsilon for evolution; (4) the use of capital letters B, D, E, for given numbers, and small letters a, b, for unknown numbers; (5) the * for multiplication; (6) the first use of ∴ for 'therefore'; (7) the three-column arrangement of which the left column contains the directions, the middle the numbers of the lines, the right the results of the operations."-Cajori, A History of Mathematical Notations, I, pp. 211-12 & see illus. on p. 213 (& see sections 205, 208, 232, 237, 266, 304, 307, 328, 333, 341, 385, & 386 for Rahn's other contributions, all of which appear in the present book).
