No place but London, London 1659 - 4to. 6 x 8 inches. Title page + 99 pp. Bound in quarter calf over mottled boards, spine with contrasting maroon title label, gilt. Extremities worn and some browning, foxing and staining; otherwise a very good copy. Title page with decorated woodcut border. Decorative border beneath text on final page. Some text in black letter. This is a vibrant first-hand record of the complex machinations of post-Civil War government in 17th century England. The notorious Puritan Prynne (1600-1669) began pamphleteering in 1627, but in 1633 was jailed, fined œ5000 and had both ears cropped for publishing a book which labelled actresses as whores, at a time when the queen herself had appeared on stage. Whilst imprisoned, he continued his pamphleteering and in 1637 was again fined, sentenced to life imprisonment, deprived of the remainder of his ears, and his cheeks branded with the letters S.L. (for seditious libeler). He was released from prison by Parliament in 1640. Prynne himself entered Parliament in 1648, and was one of the members excluded by Pride's military Purge which led to the establishment of the so-called Rump Parliament, and Cromwell's Commonwealth. After the fall of Robert Cromwell, Prynne, having supported the Restoration of Charles II, was subsequently rewarded with the post of Keeper of the Records of the Tower of London. The title reads, in translation: "Manifesto or reasons of the war between Portugal and the United Provinces of the Netherlands; with a discussion of the reasons which gave rise to the war. Venetiis,: Iannem La No, 1659. Venetiis,: Iannem La Noù,, 1659.. [xx], 408 pp. Small 4to (16 x 22,5 cm.). Modern half vellum over marbled boards, new end-papers. With 183 woodcut diagrams, and numerous wooodcut initial, head- and tail pieces. The rare first edition. In 1663 a second, slightly expanded, edition was published. "Angeli's studies in mathematics include a further development of the methods of individibles - methods introduced by Cavalieri and Torricelli - to solve the problem dealing with infinitessimals and with the areas, volumes, and centers of gravity of given geometric figures. His mathematical works echo the polemics that took place in the 17th century between supporters of the method of indivisibles and those such as Guldin and Tacquet, who defended the more rigorous but less cogent exhaustive method of the ancients. "Lectori benevolo" the introduction to Angeli's "De infinitis parabolis" is interesting in this connection. To those who opposed Cavalieri's method by asserting that the continuous is not composed of indivisibles, Angeli replied in agreement with his master, that the method in question does not depend on the composition of the continuous"(DSB.).

Bologna: Giovanni Battista Ferroni, 1659. & & . Very rare first edition, and a fine copy from the library of Pietro Riccardi, of this important work on limits of geometrical figures. In this work Mengoli “set up the basic rules of the calculus thirty years before Newton and Leibniz. Both of these were influenced by his contribution, in the case of Leibniz the influence was direct as he read Mengoli’s work while in the case of Newton he knew of it indirectly through studying Wallis.” (MacTutor History of Mathematics). <br/></br> & “In the ‘Geometriae speciosae elementa’ (1659), Mengoli set out a logical arrangement of the concepts of limit and definite integral that anticipated the work of nineteenth-century mathematicians. In establishing a rigorous theory of limits, he considered a variable quantity as a ratio of magnitudes and hence needed to consider only positive limits. He then made the following definitions: a variable quantity that can be greater than any assignable number is called ‘quasi-infinite’; a variable quantity that can be smaller than any positive number is ‘quasi-nil’; and a variable quantity that can be both smaller than any number larger than a given positive number <i>a</i> and greater than any number smaller than <i>a</i> is ‘quasi-<i>a</i>.’ <br/></br> & Using these precise concepts of the infinite, the infinitesimal, and the limit, and working from simple inequalities valid between numerical ratios, he demonstrated (as Agostini recognized by translating his obscure exposition into modern sym … [Click Below for Full Description]

Epictetus; edited by Meric Casaubon
London - Tho. Roycrofte, 1659 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A very scarce copy ofCasaubon's edition of theEnchiridion of Epictetus from the seventeenth century. In Greek and Latin. The Enchiridion, or Handbook of Epictetus, often shortened to simply The Handbook, is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice compiled by Arrian, who had been a pupil of Epictetus at the beginning of the 2nd century. Although the content is derived from the Discourses of Epictetus, it is not a summary of the Discourses, but rather it is a compilation of practical precepts. The Handbook is a guide to daily life. Unlike some of his forefathers in Greek philosophy (i. e. Plato and the other metaphysicians), Epictetus focuses his attention on how to practically apply oneself on a philosophical level. Mric Casaubon (14 August 1599, Geneva 14 July 1671, Canterbury), son of Isaac Casaubon, was a French-English classical scholar. Collated complete. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally sound, though with some rubbing. Joints starting. Hinges strained. Internally, firmly bound. Ink signatures to title page. Paper to rear pastedown missing. Pages are bright and clean, with just the occasional patch of foxing. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Parisiis-Iacobum Qvesnel, 1659. Book. This early work explores the teachings and writings of Paul the Apostle, who is described as the most influential early Christian missionary. The writings ascribed toSaint Paulby the church form a considerable portion of the New Testament. The influence on Christian thinking of the epistles ascribed to him, has been significant, due in part to his association as a prominent apostle of Christianity during the spreading of the Gospel through the Roman Empire. Paul asserted that he received the Gospel not from any person, but by a personal revelation of Jesus Christ. Featuring illustrated capitals and head and tail pieces. MENGOLI, Pietro.
Very rare first edition, and a fine copy from the library of Pietro Riccardi, of this important work on limits of geometrical figures. In this work Mengoli "set up the basic rules of the calculus thirty years before Newton and Leibniz. Both of these were influenced by his contribution, in the case of Leibniz the influence was direct as he read Mengoli's work while in the case of Newton he knew of it indirectly through studying Wallis." (MacTutor History of Mathematics). <br/></br> "In the 'Geometriae speciosae elementa' (1659), Mengoli set out a logical arrangement of the concepts of limit and definite integral that anticipated the work of nineteenth-century mathematicians. In establishing a rigorous theory of limits, he considered a variable quantity as a ratio of magnitudes and hence needed to consider only positive limits. He then made the following definitions: a variable quantity that can be greater than any assignable number is called 'quasi-infinite'; a variable quantity that can be smaller than any positive number is 'quasi-nil'; and a variable quantity that can be both smaller than any number larger than a given positive number <i>a</i> and greater than any number smaller than <i>a</i> is 'quasi-<i>a</i>.' <br/></br> Using these precise concepts of the infinite, the infinitesimal, and the limit, and working from simple inequalities valid between numerical ratios, he demonstrated (as Agostini recognized by translating his obscure exposition into modern symbols and terminology) the properties of the limit of the sum and the product, and showed that the properties of … [Click Below for Full Description]

This copy is bound in contemporary calfskin, and has been rebacked. This translation was prepared by Thomas Creech (1659-1700). The prefatory material contains commendatory poems by John Evelyn, Nathaniel Tate, Thomas Otway, and Aphra Behn among others, many of which were added after the first and second editions and this, the third edition contains the first appearance of several poems. The influence of Lucretius can be seen in Pope's 'Essay on Man.' Lucretius was also favorite reading of Shelley, Wordsworth, and Tennyson. "Creech's translation of Lucretius vied in popularity with Dryden's Virgil and Pope's Homer. The son of one of his friends is reported to have said that the translation was made in Creech's daily walk round the parks in Oxford in sets of fifty lines, which he would afterwards write down in his chamber and correct at leisure. [.] When Dryden published his translations from Theocritus, Lucretius, and Horace, he disclaimed in the preface any intention of robbing Creech 'of any part of that commendation which he has so justly acquired,' and referred to his predecessor's 'excellent annotations, which I have often reprinted in the last century, and was included in the edition of the British poets which was issued … [Click Below for Full Description]
