Feuillets brunis.

Amsterdam: Elzevir, 1659-1661. A fine copy of van Schooten's important second edition of the Geometria, Descartes's magnum opus (DSB), and one of the key texts in the history of mathematics. Descartes' “application of modern algebraic arithmetic to ancient geometry created the analytical geometry which was the basis of the post-Euclidean development of that science” (PMM). It “rendered possible the later achievements of seventeenth-century mathematical physics” (M. B. Hall, Nature and nature's laws (1970), p. 91). “The mathematical community learned about the wealth of Descartes's new ideas through the works of van Schooten ... In the second edition the commentaries were enlarged, and van Schooten included the work by his students van Heuraet, Hudde, Huygens and de Witt. This edition served as the basic textbook for the generation that, in the last quarter of the century, took the lead in introducing differential and integral calculus” (Jahnke). Newton, in particular learnt his Descartes from this edition: “There can be no doubt that Newton read the Géométrie in Schooten's second Latin edition” (Whiteside, Papers I, p. 7, n17). Newton's own heavily annotated copy of this edition is held in Cambridge University Library (NQ.16.203)

The Géométrie first appeared (in French) as an appendix to Descartes' Discours de la Méthode (1637). Frans van Schooten (1615-60) first saw the G&eacut … [Click Below for Full Description]

GLAUBER, Jean Rudolphe
ANONYMOUS.
Paris: Pierre David. 1659. 8vo. Later full mottled calf binding, spine with gilt raised bands, gilt tools and lettering, speckled edges; pp [xiv] + 145 + [i] + [13, index]; faint dampstain affecting lower quarter of last few leaves, otherwise very clean, very good. First edition. Very rare; auction records show only that one copy has appeared twice on the market in the last ten years. Though the author is unknown Simon has suggested that the book was written by the dedicatee Pierre de Lune, the 'escuyer de cuisine' of the Duc de Rohan. This is an early and very influential guide to the correct arrangement and service of banquets and formal dinners, including recipes for numerous elaborate sweets, many of which were approporiated by subsequent authors. The book also deals with the delicate art of folding napkins into fantastic shapes. This book is an artefact of the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, when dining became an art to be celebrated alongside the other cultural accomplishments of the period. It was one of four books, alongside de Lavarenne's Cuisinier Francois (1751), Kobert's L'Art de Bien Traiter (1674) and Pierre David's Le Cuisinier' (1676), that formed the foundation of French culinary art. Vicaire 553; Simon, BG 472; Cagle 297. COPAC records 1 copy in the UK.
