Astrolabium, Das ist: Gründliche Beschreibung und Unterricht... De usu Astrolabii, Posterior Pars, Das ist: Gründliche Beschreibung und Unterricht ...

Nuremberg, Germany: Christoff Gerhard for Paul Fürst No date but about 1659-1660. Text in German. Full vellum binding, possibly contemporary but likely somewhat later. Vellum age-faded and with occasional pinpoint splotches. Remnants of label to spine, with handwritten title and author. Roman numeral IV appears at spine tail. Moderate chipping at spine head and tail. Front corners moderately bumped and abraded. Hinges cracked and binding threatening to detach from text block. 7 x 5.75 inches (18 x 14.5 cm.) On rag content, laid paper. With 136 and 64 numbered pages, additional engraved title-page by P. Troschel, woodcut initials and tailpieces, and 21 engraved plates in first part, as called for. All 21 plates remarkably clean, apart from light age-toning. Note that this copy lacks the 15 large folding engraved plates that appeared in the second part of some issues. The signatures comprising the text block appear soundly bound together, except that the front title pages are loosening and the signature comprising pp. 27-30 is loosening. A few names and dates in neat ink hand to front pastedown and opposite FEP. Age toning at the very edge of all pages. Age darkening to the preliminaries, especially the last several pages. Of uncertain provenance but illustrated title page and final text page with inscription, "Coll. Sue. Jesse Bamberg" [?]. Else a rather clean copy. Downgraded to Good Plus chiefly on account of the state of the binding. Deemed worthy of restoration and conservation. With thanks to W. P. Watson Antiquarian Books for the following: "Illustrated treatise on the construction and use of astrolabes. The two parts were first published separately in Nuremberg in 1613. There appear to be numerous variant editions. This one conforms to that of Yale and Brown, which they date to the 1640s, but other authorities give 1659 and 1660 as the dates of publication. The plates in the first part are printed from the same coppers used in the 1613 edition. The second part of the 1613 edition was unillustrated. Franz Ritter was an astronomer and innovative cartographer, famous for his 'sundial' world map. Ritter specialized in the design and manufacture of astrolabes, sundials, and other astronomical, horological and cartographical instruments.". Vellum. Good Plus. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

North America antique map - Sanson.

ONE OF THE EARLIEST MAPS TO DEPICT ALL 5 GREAT LAKES - Amerique SeptentrionaleAll of North America, with California depicted as an island. Engraved by Pierre mariette, published by Nicolas Sanson in 1659. First map to name Lakes Superior and Ontario. Burden calls this a "landmark map of North America. It was drawn, with his usual care, using the sinusoidal projection which is sometimes known by the name Sanson-Flamstead.It is, perhaps, most important for being the first printed map to delineate the five Great Lakes in a recognizable form... To the west, S Fe, Navajo, Apache, Taosij and others all appear for the first time. The first is incorrectly placed on the west bank of the Rio Grande, here again flowing to the south-west. These were the first advances in the geography of this region for some time. The information was derived from the travels of Father Alonso de Benavides in the late 1620's...California as an island is of the Briggs type with some important alterations; Sanson introduces four placenames from the de Laet map of 1630, C. de Fortune, C. de Pinos, C. de S.Martin and C. de Galera..." There were three states of the map, of which this is the third. The first state, of which only two examples were known, had no land to the north-west of California; the second state, also quite uncommon, added coastline at that point, and eliminated a few placenames north of California; the third state is the same as the second, except that Lake Ontario has been shaded to match the other Great Lakes. Size: 39,8 x 57 cm. Literature: Philip Burden, The Mapping of North America (1996), nr. 294 Price: ?3.350,- (excl. VAT/BTW).

A Rouen, chez François Vaultier, 1659. - in-8. 3ff. 506pp. Mosaicall Philosophy

1659. First Edition . FLUDD, Robert. Mosaicall Philosophy Grounded upon the Essentiall Truth or Eternal Sapience. Written first in Latin, and afterwards thus rendered into English. London: Printed for Humphrey Moseley, 1659. Small folio, contemporary full blind-ruled brown sheep, raised bands. Housed in custom half morocco clamshell box. $24,000.First edition in English of Fludd’s “grand synthesis of knowledge,” based on intricate, interwoven theories of mysticism, natural magic, Neoplatonism, alchemy, hermeticism and Paracelsianism, featuring numerous woodcut engravings.A controversial Rosicrucian and physician, Robert Fludd (1574-1637) first encountered occult circles during his time at St. John’s College, Oxford. “The chief English representative of that school of medical mystics which laid claim to the possession of the key to universal science” (DNB), Fludd traveled extensively through Europe after graduation, a period in which it “seems likely that he was exposed to hermeticism and Paracelsianism,” and on returning to London, began his life’s work amidst almost immediate and continuing controversy (ODNB). “Remembered for his connection with the fraternity of the rosy cross… [and] his position that all true natural science is rooted in revelation” (DNB), Fludd preceded his Mosaicall Philosophy with only one other work in English, Doctor Fudd’s answer unto M. Foster (1631). It was there that Fludd defended his belief in the efficacy of a weapon-salve based on the Paracelsian doctrine of curing a wound by anointing it with the weapon that caused it—in this instance with a mixture of the patient’s blood, moss grown on a human skull, and flesh from the body of a hanged man. In Mosaicall Philosophy, Fludd offers an “explicit, detailed and highly organized Neoplatonist—Cabalist—alchemical interpretation of the universe… Fludd was a devoutly Christian Neoplatonist, or as he would call himself, a Mosaicall Philosopher, since he begins with what he believes to be infallible principles delivered from God directly to Moses and his followers. Since Fludd made some unique contributions to his grand synthesis of knowledge over and above what was formulated originally by the Renaissance Florentine Neoplatonists, he felt justified in calling his philosophy ‘Fluddean’ as well as Mosaicall… This concept of using natural magic to investigate the mysteries of the unified, sympathetic harmony of the universe precisely described Fludd’s approach to exploring natural phenomena.” Fludd chronicles a number of experiments, including the fascinating Calendar- (or Weather-) Glass and those dealing with magnetism. The Weather-Glass, a combination of barometer/thermometer, was used to show the effects upon the natural world of the dichotomies of light/dark or heat/cold. Fludd believed that the interplay of these opposites animated the universe and that the Weather-Glass demonstrated this. The other major experimental evidence Fludd offers herein is said to “confirm the loving Micro-cosmicall Attraction, or sympathetical Coition, and anti-patheticall Expulsion or hatred, by the magnetick, and expulsive property of the Macrocosmicall Loadstone.” Just as the Weather-Glass could be considered a miniature universe, the mineral lodestone could be said to demonstrate its principles of attraction and repulsion on a macrocosmic scale, while also demonstrating “how these properties work in the animal kingdom, and can thus be used for medical cures” (Huffman, 104-5, 118, 124). Preceded by the posthumously published Latin edition of 1638. Two sections in one volume; second section with its own title page. With several woodcut illustrations, ornamental woodcut headpieces and initials. Ferguson I:284. Krivatsky 4141. Wing F1391. Lowndes, 814. Contemporary owner signature, notations, to front free endpaper and title page; lengthy passage in manuscript (leaf R3r); marginalia to one leaf (287).Scattered mild foxing, light dampstaining. Inner paper hinge starting, mild splits to ends of front joint; binding sound. Mild age-wear to contemporary sheep. Minor repair to spine head. An extremely good copy. Scarce.

Duodecimo, contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt between raised bands. Very scarce: first edition of this description and history of an imagined kingdom, an allegorical satire on French court and society.Sorel (1597-1674) novelist and historian, wrote a vast array of works, many issued anonymously or pseudonymously: he 'professa toute sa vie pour les lettres une ardeur indefatigable' (NBG). This tremendous output has made a complete bibliography of his works a difficult undertaking, but even a brief overview shows his astonishing diversity: satires, histories, fables, etc. The Rélation Véritable is a satire on French mores, followed by Sorel's Discours sur la Nouvelle Allégorique, an approving comparison of Sorel's invented kingdom of Sophie and Antoine Furetière's earlier Nouvelle Allégorique, ou Histoire des derniers troubles arrivez au royaume de l'eloquence. Slightly browned but a very good copy.

        Geometriae Speciose Elementa.

Bologna: Giovanni Battista Ferroni, 1659. First edition, and a fine copy from the library of Pietro Riccardi, of this very rare and highly original work in which Mengoli "set up the basic rules of the calculus thirty years before Newton and Leibniz. Both of these were influenced by his contribution, in the case of Leibniz the influence was direct as he read Mengoli's work, while in the case of Newton he knew of it indirectly through studying Wallis" (MacTutor History of Mathematics). Mengoli develops here a new method of quadratures, i.e., finding the areas of geometrical figures, based on François Viète's symbolic, or 'specious' algebra, and on his own new theory of 'quasi proportions,' the first true theory of limits. Like the Geometria indivisibilibus (1635) of Mengoli's master Bonaventura Cavalieri, the Geometriae is an important precursor of the integral calculus. Cavalieri's method of indivisibles, which was entirely geometrical, had been much criticized by his contemporaries for having uncertain foundations, and Mengoli wrote the Geometriae in part as a defense of Cavalieri. Mengoli's 'specious geometry' is, however, an entirely new method with a largely algebraic basis. This is an extremely rare book: OCLC records just one copy in the US (New York Public Library), and we have located only one copy in auction records. In the first decades of the seventeenth century mathematicians began to assimilate the symbolic algebra introduced by Viète in his great work In Artem Analyticem Isagoge (1591). The first important consequence was Descartes' La Géométrie (1637), which used Viète's specious algebra to solve geometrical problems (essentially those that reduce to the determination of the points of intersection of two curves). Mengoli's work applies specious algebra to the summation of power series and a different class of geometrical problems, the quadrature of curves. "In his work Geometriae Speciosae Elementa, algebra and geometry are used in complementary ways in the investigation of quadrature problems. At the beginning of this work he claimed that his geometry was a combination of those of Cavalieri and Archimedes obtained using the tools that Viete's 'specious algebra' offered him ... His principal aim was to square the circle, a goal he achieved by means of his new method in a later work, Circolo" (Massa Esteve, p. 84). "Mengoli believed that the basis of Cavalieri's method of indivisibles was not sufficiently sound. He wanted to provide a solid foundation for the application of this method to square the given figures, new figures, and, especially, the circle ... First, using his own system of coordinates, he expressed geometric figures by algebraic expressions. Second, to classify these algebraic expressions he placed them in a triangular table. Third, he used these algebraic expressions as part of a method for the geometrical construction of coordinates of these figures, and finally, he used triangular tables and quasi proportions to find new quadratures and to produce general demonstrations of quadrature results" (ibid., p. 94). The Geometriae opens with a long introduction, the Lectio elementario, which provides an overview of the six chapters, or Elementa. The first two chapters contain the calculations of numerous summations of powers and products of powers, and the proofs of several identities. These calculations are based on three triangular tables. "Mengoli's originality stems not from the definitions of these tables but from his treatment of them. On the one hand he uses these tables and Viète's algebra to create other tables with letters expressing additions of powers and products of powers; on the other he employs the relations between these summations and the combinatory numbers of the arithmetic triangle to prove one of the most important results of his book, namely the sum of the pth powers of the first t - 1 integers" (Massa, pp. 261-2). This formula had been stated earlier by Fermat and Pascal, but without proof. The third Elementum introduces Mengoli's theory of 'quasi proportions.' In this chapter, "Mengoli set out a logical arrangement of the concepts of limit and definite integral that anticipated the work of nineteenth-century mathematicians. In establishing a rigorous theory of limits, he considered a variable quantity as a ratio of magnitudes and hence needed to consider only positive limits. He then made the following definitions: a variable quantity that can be greater than any assignable number is called 'quasi-infinite'; a variable quantity that can be smaller than any positive number is 'quasi-nil'; and a variable quantity that can be both smaller than any number larger than a given positive number a and greater than any number smaller than a is 'quasi-a.' "Using these precise concepts of the infinite, the infinitesimal, and the limit, and working from simple inequalities valid between numerical ratios, he demonstrated ... the properties of the limit of the sum and the product, and showed that the properties of proportions are conserved also at the limit. The proofs obtain when such limits are neither 0 nor &infinity;; for this case Mengoli set out the properties of the infinitesimal calculus and the calculus of infinites some thirty years before Newton published them in his 'Principia'." (DSB). In the fourth and fifth Elementa, Mengoli developed "a rigorous basis for the logarithm on the model of the Eudoxian definitions of equality and inequality for reals" (Whiteside, pp. 192-3). He "set out a purely arithmetic theory of logarithms; having given a definition of the logarithmic ratio similar to Euclid's definition of ratio between magnitudes; he then extended Euclid's book V to encompass his own logarithmic ratio. Mengoli also did significant work in logarithmic series (thirteen years before N. Mercator published his 'Logarithmotechnia')" (DSB). The series expansion for the logarithm was apparently included at the last minute, as it appears in the introduction (appendix: pp. 73-75). "Finally, the sixth Elementum, De innumerabilibus quadraturis, involves calculating the quadratures of curves that correspond to functions represented by y = xs(1 - x)p-s [where p and s are non-negative integers]. Mengoli does this by using the theory of quasi proportions explained in the Elementum tertium" (Massa, p. 260). "The triangular table of quadratures that Mengoli constructed could be extended indefinitely. He knew the value of these quadratures and looked for a rule that allowed him to associate any geometric figure to an algebraic expression. Putting these expressions in the table with the appropriate coefficients, the quadratures of the new curves were given. He classified the curves that determine them into three types and studied the properties of each group, again using the theory of quasi proportions" (Massa Esteve, p. 110). "In spite of these innovations, Mengoli was scarcely understood. In a letter to Collins, Isaac Barrow said that Mengoli's style was harder than Arabic, and that if Mengoli had found something new, he did not have the time to investigate it. Even though his reputation was strong during his lifetime, it seems that Mengoli died isolated and ignored. The reasons for this are not clear. It is possible that his complex and confusing writing style and the complicated nature of his notation made his works too hard to read; perhaps, for this reason, he had no followers. It is equally possible that his introduction of algebra into geometry failed to accord with the prevailing mathematical practice of the 17th century" (Massa, p. 278). Riccardi I (2), 150 (this copy). Goedeke III, 29, 28; VD17 14:084320E - Georg Greflinger (Pseud.

Historical collections of private passages of state, weighty matters in law, remarkable proceedings in five parliaments. Beginning the sixteenth year of King James, anno 1618. and ending ... [with the death of King Charles the First, 1648] ...

Rushworth (1612?-90), a partisan of Cromwell and Parliament, compiled one of the most famous and still sought-after assemblages of documents on the history of England during the early Stuart period and the Civil War era. Biased though it be, the work is a major source for historians, both amateur and professional, and for students of English law.For the latter, in addition to the obvious parliamentary proceedings, there is the noteworthy inclusion at the end of vol. III of the "Star Chamber Reports" that compose the appendix, and the devotion of all of vol. VIII to the trial of Thomas, Earl of Stratford; the set in hand has the issue of vol. I having no map but two plates, both present. As our caption notes, this vast repository purports to have been made as "a bare narrative" of its "fact[s]"; but it now resonates with a richness far beyond mere chronicle.=> It repays both extended and "dip-in" reading for pleasure.

Amsterdam, 1757. With 2 folding engraved plates. 19th-century vellum.

      - Caillet 10495; STCN 297970747. Third edition of the French translation of a work on hell by the English clergyman Tobias Swinden (1659-1719). Besides the punishments one can expect in hell, it mostly deals with the location of hell. Stating that the fire in hell isn't a metaphor, but real fire, and that the fire was eternal, Swinden places the hell in the sun. He includes different opinions on the placement of hell, refuting the idea of fire (and hell) being inside of the earth. He also tries to reconcile science and religion, referring to Copernicus and Tycho Brahe, and agreeing that the sun, and not the earth, is the center of the universe and not the earth. In spite of the scholarly approach of the work, it became rather popular and appeared in various editions and translations. With two bookplates on paste-down. Title-page slightly soiled, margins slightly browned throughout and with a few small spots. Binding only slightly soiled. Overall in very good condition.

Very old (contemporary?) ink stamped ex-libris "Sheppard" below a crudely drawn sheep framed in laurel branches on front free endpaper. John Gauden (1605-1662) at time of publication of this volume was Dean of Bocking (in Essex), the following year he was appointed Bishop of Exeter and 2 years later made Bishop of Worcester. During the English Civil War he sided with the Parliamentary Party, though he did not support the execution of Charles I in 1649. He is best remembered for his claim to authorship of the Eikon Basilike (in Greek) The Pourtrature of His Sacred Majestie in His Solitudes and Sufferings, a work attributed to Charles I and published just days after his execution. The question of authorship has never been solved and Gauden remains in the running.

Dictionarium Saxonico-Latino-Anglicum voces, phrasesque praecipuas Anglo-Saxonicas, e libris sive manuscriptis, sive typis excusis ... cum Latina et Anglica vocum interpretatione complectens ... Accesserunt Aelfrici Abbatis grammatica Latino-Saxonica, cum glossario suo ejusdem generis

Oxford: William Hall, 1659. First edition of the first Anglo-Saxon dictionary, folio, pp. [18], [348], [2], 80, [6]; the final leaf is a list of subscribers, the first printed in Oxford; with the corrected reprint slip (not present in all copies) pasted over the marginal note on p. [7]; Old English entries with Latin and English equivalents; printed in Hibernain, Black, and Roman letter; contains also the text of Aelfric's grammar, together with an accompanying glossary; occasional annotations throughout in ink in a contemporary hand in Latin and French, title printed in red and black, 1 small hole and marginal tear neatly repaired in title, occasional marginal tears stains, several small rust marks, that on O1 with loss of two letters on each side, loss of portions of 2 words on H2 from old adhesion; some wear at edges and minor restoration on spine, otherwise a very handsome copy in contemporary ruled full calf, gilt spine, red sprinkled edges; armorial bookplate of Lord Lilford. The "first comprehensive Anglo-Saxon dictionary whose appearance in 1659 ...mark[ed] the beginning of a new epoch in the study of English philology ... The man who was, more than all others, responsible for the inauguration of the new epoch [was] William Somner ... By the good will of other scholars much of the manuscript material which had already been collected (largely by Abraham Wheloc) came into his hands. But even so, great labour was required in a work of synthesis demanding such originality. Not until 1659 did there appear at last the Dictionarium Saxonico-Latinuo-Anglicum which is the most worthy memorial of the fine and self-effacing student who made it. ... His book opened a new path to the Old English philologist and at the same time it made his subject less esoteric. It initiated also a new period in the study of Anglo-Saxon history by supplying students of an instrument in which they had stood in sore need" (Douglas, English Scholars, chapt. 3).         A rod for the lawyers: Who are hereby declared to be the grand robbers & deceivers of the nation; greedily devouring yearely many millions of the peoples money.

London: Giles Calvert, 1659. 4to (18.2 cm, 7.2"). [4], 16 pp. First edition of this attack on professional lawyers and, on a larger scale, on general legal injustices as practiced by the ruling class against the commons. Cole, a self-professed lover of his country, added "a Word to the Parliament; and a Word to the Army" to this scathing diatribe against "this pestiferous Generation of the Lawyers [which] runs from City to Countrey, seeking whom they may devour" (p. [iii]).    Uncommon: ESTC and WorldCat locate only three U.S. institutional holdings of this edition. A variant, lacking publisher information, was printed in the same year; the present example bears three woodcut headpieces and one foliated capital.         ESTC R29637; Wing (rev. ed.) C5039A. Removed from a nonce volume, with early inked pagination added in upper outer corners. Final leaf with lower outer corner torn away, not nearing text; slim track of worming to lower inner leaf portions, not obscuring text and with unobtrusive translucent repairs to several instances. => A very nice copy of this uncommon polemic.

A Rouen, chez François Vaultier, 1659. - in-8. 3ff. 506pp. Bon exemplaire. Cf.         De Maximis et Minimis Geometrica Divinatio in Quintum Conicorum Apollonii Pergaei

      - Two full-page engraved plates on one double-page sheet, two woodcut plates, & numerous woodcut diagrams in the text. Woodcut of Medici arms on titles which are printed in red & black. Two parts in one vol. 8 p.l., 154 pp.; 2 p.l., 154 pp., one leaf of errata. Folio, cont. vellum over boards (a bit of foxing). Florence: J. Cocchini, 1659. First edition and a splendid copy of the author's first book in which Viviani attempted a reconstruction of the important fifth book of Apollonius' Conics, a text at that time lost. The Conics was in eight books, but only the first four have come down to us in the original Greek. There was some knowledge of the fifth book due to hints supplied by other Greek mathematicians and it was this information which Viviani used. While Viviani was working on his reconstruction of the fifth book, Borelli discovered in an Arabic manuscript in the Medicean Library the text of books five through seven (book eight is lost). These were then translated into Latin by Borelli and Ecchellensis and were published in 1661. The similarity between Viviani's reconstruction and the actual text was very great. It is Book V which has particularly evoked the admiration of modern mathematicians. It "reveals better than any other the giant intellect of its author. Difficult questions of maxima and minima?are here treated exhaustively? Here are also found the germs of the subject of evolutes and centres of osculation."-Cajori, History of Mathematics, pp. 40-41-(on Apollonius). In this book, Viviani also "published his results on what is now called the Steiner problem (although the designation Fermat problem would be more appropriate) as an appendix to his celebrated reconstruction of the fifth book of Apollonius's Conic Sections where the ancient author treated maximum and minimum problems related to conic sections."-Hildebrant & Tromba, The Parsimonious Universe, p. 92. Viviani (1622-1703), a disciple and biographer of Galileo, established his reputation with this work. Fine, crisp, and large copy with half-title. Preserved in a box. ? Cinti 135. Riccardi, II, 625-"Raro e pregiato.". [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
