Engraved plate of the coat-of-arms of Alessandro Farnese, dedication leaf, and preface leaf, large folding engraved general map of the Greek Archipelago, folding maps of Crete and Negroponte, and 46 full-page maps, that of Schiro with revised map pasted over the original, wood-engraved historiated initials and tailpieces (pale marginal waterstain throughout). 18th-century green morocco backed vinegar marbled paper boards, gilt, red morocco lettering piece, all edges gilt and gauffered (spine a bit worn, upper hinge starting). The map of Crete is based on that in Boschini's earlier work Il regno tutto di Candia. Boschini was a Venetian painter and engraver of the early Baroque period, famously painting The Last Supper for the sacristy of San Girolamo at Venice. Clearly he was also an accomplished engraver, and published several important works: La Carta del Navegar pittoresco, 1660, an encyclopedic work on Venetian artists, presented as a journey through the world of art, giving brief biographies of many of his contemporaries; Le minere della pittura ve … [Click Below for Full Description]

Allestree, Richard.
R. Norton 1658 - Hardcover in presumed original leather covered boards which have been professionally rebacked and repaired with gilt decoration on boards and spine with five raised bands and gilt titles, some repaired pages (see photos), page 401 has some loss, some previous owners names in ink on verso of title page and page 401, other small annotations throughout, all edges gilt, marbled end papers, Very Good condition commensurate with age. First edition, pp 503, engraved frontis, preface by Dr. H. Hammond. A Very Scarce first edition of this important theological work. From Wikipedia: The consensus view of modern scholars is that the likely author was Richard Allestree, but at the time of publication (towards the end of the Interregnum) the High Church tradition it represents was a politically dangerous position. The authorship was well concealed, and it has been noted that the work has been attributed to at least 27 people, beginning with Hammond himself., The Whole Duty of Man is mentioned in novels as a work typically to be found in small personal libraries. Examples are "a Family Bible, a "Josephus," and a "Whole Duty of Man", in The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy; "a shelf on which Mrs Julaper had her Bible, her Whole Duty of Man, and her Pilgrim's Progress", in The Haunted Baronet by Sheridan Le Fanu; and "the bookcases, where Fox's "Lives of the Martyrs" nestled happily beside "The Whole Duty of Man" in The Souls of Black Folk by W. E. B. Du Bois. Richard Brinsley Sheridan guyed it in The Rivals. Thomas Babington Macaulay wrote of William Sherlock's Treat … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Independent minister Thomas Burroughs (?1601 - 1646) was a student at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where his tutor was Thomas Hooker. His independence began to show itself when he refused to read prayers and delivered them extempore and refused to bow at the name of Jesus. He was called to join the English Reformed Church in Rotterdam in 1639. Schenk junior, age estimate after 1718. State: Exact age and ed. to be determined, but before 1775.Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after 'N. ten Have'. The Visscher family were art and map dealers in Amsterdam during the 17th century. Funded by C. J. Visscher (1587-1652), the business was continued by his son and grandson both named Nicolas. Sanderson, William
London: printed for Humphrey Moseley, Richard Tomlins, and George Sawbridge, 1658. First edition. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Charles I by Faithorne, and engraved portrait of Sanderson. [12], 408, [24], 409-1149, [15] pp. 4to. With contemporary marginal annotations on the front flyleaf, as well as on several pages in the text. "An important example of the early attempts by royalists to manage the memory of the martyred king, and therefore a significant work in the development of later seventeenth-century history writing, which was notably more controversial, even polemical, than that of the pre-civil war decades" (ONDB). ESTC R5305. Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, front and rear covers bearing the gilt monogram of Charles II, surmounted by a gilt crown; a note in a later hand suggests the book came from the Rudhall Library in Gloucestershire; later bookplate on front pastedown.
