Ohne Druckadresse, 1658.
Bibliografia: Walter, Japan a Cartographic vision, p. 193, 57. Cortazzi p. 70. Dimensioni 550x455. Showing Japan and part of China. First published in 1644 in Janssonius' Novus Atlas. From 1657 Janssonius (Jan Jansen) supplemented the folio-edition of his atlas with several maps. He took the opportunity to enlarge the scale of this new map of Japan. Older maps depicted Ezo much larger than it is after Vries, in 1643, mistook Kunashiri and Urup to be parts of Ezo. This map shows Urup, which Vries called Compagnijs Landt, to be much larger than it was depicted before. Jansonius used the additional space to enlarge the scale and add placenames. However, he made many mistakes in the placenam … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Satire on tobacco smoking -] - Birken, Sigmund von und Jakob Balde: Die Truckene Trunkenheit. Eine aus Jacobi Balde Lateinischem gedeutschte Satyra oder Straff-Rede wider den Mißbrauch des Tabaks. Samt einem Discurs von dem Nahmen, Ankunfft, Natur, Krafft und Würkung dieses Krauts. Nürnberg, Michael Endter 1658. Very rare first edition. ---------------------- Sigmund von Birken's (1626-1681) treatise on dry drunkenness is not only a very free German adaption of Jakob Balde's (1604-1668) Satyra Contra Abusum Tabaci (1657) but also a fairly factual and scholarly presentation of tobacco smoking, which repeatedly exposes a possible use of the herb. The satire criticises of the right, but especially the medical use of tobacco. For example, the author warns pregnant women against smoking and passive smoking. Despite all the criticism, Birken emphasizes the inspirational power of tobacco. His position on smoking remains ultimately unclear. To what extent the author himself relied on the enjoyment of tobacco when writing the text is uncertain. However, it is fact that Birken received a tobacco life annuity from the Nuremberg dealer Johann Nicolaus Lay on account of his book. ----------------------------------------------------- Birken's analogy of dry drunkenness is due to the fact that the German language was still missing a term for what we call, since the second half of the 17th century, smoking. Birken was one of the most v … [Click Below for Full Description]

H. Hammond D.D.
ont> J Flesher for Richard Royston: London, 1658. Ont> J Flesher for Richard Royston: London Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Henry Hammond's rebuttal to and analysis of Daniel Cawdry's controversial work 'A Diatribe Concerning Superstition'. A very scarce and early work regarding superstition. The first edition of this work. This copy does not have the cancel title page with Davies' name in the imprint, as mentioned to the ESTC. The imprint to this copy reads 'Printed by J Flesher for Richard Royston at the Angel in Ivy Lane'. Hammond wrote this work in response to Cawdry's attack on the 'three little tracts of superstition, will-worship and festivals. ' Cawdry, or Cawdrey, was one of the leading members of the Westminster Assembly. Upon the Restoration it was recommended to Lord Clarendon for a bishopric but upon his refusal to submit to the Act of Uniformity he was ejected. Many of his works were against the Anglicans and Independents. His tone was incendiary and his writings were viewed as controversial by many. Following this rebuttal of his work by Hammond, Cawdry penned another work 'A Vindication of the Diatribe against Dr Hammond; or the Account audited and discounted' in 1658. Being the variant with page 295 misnumbered 265. ESTC citation no. R202302. Henry Hammond was an English churchman and staunch Royalist. He was known for his controversial sermons and tracts and was a pioneer Anglican theologian. Much of Hammond's works were influenced by Richard Hooker and Lancelot Andrewes. To the preface, Hammond states that following the aforementioned work by … [Click Below for Full Description]
