He was a prolific scholar and church leader, who today is most famous for his identification of the genuine letters of the church father, Ignatius, and for his chronology that sought to establish the time and date of the creation as "the entrance of the night preceding the 23rd day of October... the year before Christ 4004"; that is, around 6 pm on 22 October 4004 BC, per the proleptic Julian calendar. NEWCASTLE William Cavendish (Duke of)
chez Iacques van Meurs, 1658. In folio max. [Click Below for Full Description]

[s.n.], 1658 [i.e. 1792], . 16mo. 72 [i.e. 172]pp. Handsomely bound by Thouvenin in contemporary gilt-ruled black calf, A.E.G. A trifle rubbed. Marbled endpapers, later bookplate of James Elwin Millard to FEP, internally clean and crisp. A reprint of the French translation of Parliamentarian army officer Edward Sexby's (c.1616- 1658) Killing noe murder (Holland, 1657), written with the assistance of Royalist Silius Titus (c.1623-1704), under the name of Sexby's former fellow agitator William Allen. The work, an apology for tyrannicide, argues that Cromwell, (whom Sexby had conspired to assassinate) was a tyrant on a par with Caligula and Nero, and that under such a despot the private citizen has the right to exact punishment, and, as tyranny is a suspension of the normal course of law, tyrannicide could not be regarded as an act of murder. This late eighteenth-century Parisian printing was likely issued to justify, in advance, the execution of Louis XVI during the French Revolution. ~ About Antiquates We're based in the heart of the Dorset countryside, with an antiquarian bookshop in Wareham, housed within a beautiful Grade II Listed Georgian Building, we also travel far and wide to buy, sell and advise on rare books.
[Click Below for Full Description]

(BINDINGS - ANDREOLI/ROSPIGLIOSI BINDERY). MISSAL IN LATIN
Rome: Ex Typographia Reuer. Camerae Aspostolicae, 1658. This is a striking example of the celebrated work produced in the heyday of the bindery operated by Gregorio and Giovanni Andreoli, dubbed the "Rospigliosi Bindery" by Hobson because it was the favored atelier of Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi (1600-69), later Pope Clement IX. In addition to work done for Rospigliosi and other princes of the Church, the Andreolis bound books for merchant princes like the Medici and Borghese, and for real royalty, notably Queen Christina of Sweden, who called on them to bind books for the library she created at her Roman palazzo. Active from about 1630 until the early years of the 18th century, the bindery was at its zenith of production and design in the 1650s through the 1680s. Many of its bindings were done in the "compartment" style of decoration seen here, with multiple, symmetrically placed compartments filled with rows of small tools or ornate filigree tooling. Bindings done for a noble or ecclesiastical client would often have the patron's coat of arms at center; on our copy, that space is filled with a lovely filigree mandorla, suggesting perhaps that this service book for Mass was bound for a church or chapel rather than for an individual. The present volume stands out because it is significantly larger than the typical Andreoli binding. José Ruysschaert was the first to identify the Andreoli brothers as the Rospigliosi binders. In 1665, Gregorio was given a lifetime appointment as binder to the Vatican Library. The number and quality of the bindings produced (Foot report … [Click Below for Full Description]

OLSCHLAGER Adam, BARBERINO Raffaello
S. e. (ma Girolamo Diotallevi), Viterbo, 1658. In 8, cm 18 x 24,5, pp. (4) + 222 + (2) con 5 ( su 6) tavole fuori testo incise all'acquaforte e un'insegna incisa posta all'ultima carta (Diversa per aequora). Manca gran parte della pianta di Mosca. Brunitura uniforme alle tavole. Piena pergamena coeva.
