Jo. Streater, London, 1658. 4to in later 1/2 calf. Title and decorations unevenly stamped in gilt and an incorrect date (1638) on spine. (xiv) 398 pp. Leather shows edgewear and scuffing with a chip out of the top of the spine. Front board slightly bowed. Binding is still strong with firm joints. The dogearing tapers off by page 50 and the lower damage continues to approx. page 125 with another smaller bump later in the text. Tiny worm holes in the top margins of the first two pages of the preface, not affecting the text. Occasional light foxing and marginal water stains, otherwise the text is generally sound and clean throughout. Scarce first English edition of this major work of Renaissance medicine. Johannes JANSSONIUS (1588-1664)
Bibliografia: Walter, Japan a Cartographic vision, p. 193, 57. Cortazzi p. 70. Dimensioni 550x455. Showing Japan and part of China. First published in 1644 in Janssonius' Novus Atlas. From 1657 Janssonius (Jan Jansen) supplemented the folio-edition of his atlas with several maps. He took the opportunity to enlarge the scale of this new map of Japan. Older maps depicted Ezo much larger than it is after Vries, in 1643, mistook Kunashiri and Urup to be parts of Ezo. This map shows Urup, which Vries called Compagnijs Landt, to be much larger than it was depicted before. Jansonius used the additional space to enlarge the scale and add placenames. Nicolas VISSCHER I (1618 - 1679)
He was a prolific scholar and church leader, who today is most famous for his identification of the genuine letters of the church father, Ignatius, and for his chronology that sought to establish the time and date of the creation as "the entrance of the night preceding the 23rd day of October... the year before Christ 4004"; that is, around 6 pm on 22 October 4004 BC, per the proleptic Julian calendar. [Click Below for Full Description]

Dordrechti, Gorinchemi: N. Frisii, sumptibus P. Vink, 1658. 1658 Paolo Sarpi History of Council of Trent Catholic Roman Curia ProtestantPaolo Sarpi was a 16th-century Italian historian who is best known for his book 'History of the Council of Trent'. First published in 1619, this book focused on the administrative institutions of the Holy See, mainly the Roman Curia. And while the book was written to discuss the Catholic Church, it was mainly read by Protestants. In fact, British historian Denys Hay call it a "kind of Anglican picture of the debates and decisions" of the Catholic church. Worth noting, Paolo Sarpi was a friend and scientific correspondent with Galileo Galilei.Item number: #9337Price: $750SARPI, Paolo Petri Suavis Polani historiae concilii Tridentini libri octo: ex Italicis summa fide ac cura Latini facti; Accedunt hac editione I. vita autoris, II. Percey, William.
London: J.C. for Henry Fletcher, 1658. 19th century brown calf. 3 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches. vii, (i), 83pp. Engraved frontispiece. First edition. An early treatise on swimming, preceded only by Wynman's "De art natandi" (1538) and Everard Digby's latin tract "De arte natandi libri duo" (1589). Percey's work is essentially the second translation into English of Digby but with an original preface and some new material. It is also the third book on swimming printed in England preceded by Digby and a 1595 translation of the same by Christofer Middleton. In any case it is quite rare with only one copy appearing at auction in recent years, that being the Britwell copy which sold twice at auction in 2014 and 2017. This is a very good, complete copy with some light soiling and wear to the text. There is a tiny ink scribble at the foot of the title page, the first page of text has a 3-inch closed tear in the lower right corner not affecting any wording whatsoever and page 7 has a small piece missing from the lower blank margin otherwise the text is in very good condition for its age. The binding is good and firm with some scuffing and wear to the spine and some spotting to the front cover. WING P1454. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1658. The Customary Law of Protectorate-Era London [London]. The City Law, Shewing the Customes, Franchises, Liberties, Priviledges, And Immunities of the Famous City of London. Together With the Names, Natures, Kinds, Jurisdictions, Powers, And Proceedings of the Severall Courts Within the Same: As Also the Titles, Qualities, Advantages, And Profits of the Severall Officers, And Offices in London: And in Whose Dispose Those Offices Are. Necessary to be Known to All Merchants, Citizens, Tradesmen, And Others. London: Printed by T.R. for Timothy Twyford, 1658. [viii], 127, [1] pp. Octavo (5-1/4" x 3-1/4"). Recent period-style calf, blind rules to boards, gilt fillets and lettering piece to spine, edges rouged. Light rubbing and a few minor nicks to boards. Moderate toning to text, minor loss to side-notes of a few leaves due to trimming, spark burns and minor edgewear to a few other leaves, light soiling to title page, internally clean. A handsome copy. * First and only edition. Rich in legal and historical interest, this handbook of London's customary law during the Protectorate (1653-1659) incorporates material from a brief book published at the end of the Civil War, The City-Law: Or, The Course and Practice in All Manner of Juridicall Proceedings in the Hustings in Guildhall, London (1647). It offers an interesting perspective on the relationship between London's old customary laws with the reforms introduced by Cromwell's government. Both editions are scarce. OCLC locates 5 copies of the 1658 edition in North American law libraries (Columbia, Harvard, SMU, University of … [Click Below for Full Description]

[THE HAGUE - PHARMACOPOEIA].
Daems & Vandewiele, p. 113; STCN (9 copies, incl. 4 incomplete). First and only edition of the unauthorized Dutch translation of the official pharmacopoeia of the municipality of The Hague in the Netherlands, first published in Latin by Johannes Tongerlo in 1658 as Pharmacopoea Hagiensis. The index lists about 500 medicines. In some cases the text simply gives the name of the medicine with a reference to a published source, in others it gives a full recipe with the ingredients and instructions for their preparation.Johannes de Cros published the translation without consent of the Collegium Medicorum of The Hague. This lead to a heated argument and De Cros would later add a postscript (8 pp.), as included in the present copy, explaining his side of the story. Internally in very good condition; binding used, but structurally sound.
