COWELL, John
London: Printed by F. Leach, and are to be sold by Hen. Twyford, Tho. Dring, and Jo. Place, 1658. London: Printed by F. Leach, and are to be sold by Hen. Twyford, Tho. Dring, and Jo. Place, 1658. [284]pp. Contemporary blind-ruled calf. Rubbed, surface loss, marking, and damp-staining to boards, very small worm-holes to top compartment of spine. Front and rear pastedowns sprung, very occasional light browning and dust-soiling. Civil lawyer John Cowell's (1554-1611) most well-known and controversial publication, a legal dictionary providing definitions of terms found within contemporary English law. Upon first being printed in 1607, several of Cowell's definitions proved divisive, seeming to demonstrate sympathies towards royal absolutism - a view which caused outrage in the parliament of 1610. Members argued that Cowell's arguments differed little from the imperial laws of the Roman empire, and common lawyers objected to the defence of the jurisdiction of the ecclesiastical and admiralty courts. As such many attempts were made to suppress the work, yet despite these efforts The Interpreter endured, primarily due to it's utility as a reference for legal practitioners; as such it was reprinted on 11 occasions during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. ESTC R31653, Wing C6644.. Folio.

MARSIGLI, Luigi Ferdinando.
Bibl. Natura Artis Magistra 1390; Nissen, ZBI, 2700; Poggendorff II, col. 59. First edition of the Dutch translation, beautifully illustrated and hand-coloured, of a popular description of plants and corals of the sea by Luigi Ferdinando Conte de Marsigli (1658-1730), a celebrated Italian geographer and natural scientist. First published at Bologna in 1700, it was the first work to describe what the author himself called "coral-flowers". He minutely and very correctly described and designed them, but he drew the wrong conclusions, seeing them as plants in stead of plant-animals. But even when this was corrected by later scientists like Jussieu and Ellis, Marsigli's book continued to be published for its beautiful plates, and its accurate descriptions. In the present edition the publisher asks his readers just to substitute the word plant for animal. In very good condition, with virtually untrimmed edges. Binding worn along the extremities and sides slightly damaged.

Origen (edited by William Spencer of Trinity College Cambridge)
Cambridge: Printed by John Field the University typographer for William Morden 1st edition published in England, 1658. Hardcover. Good. Quarto tooled calf on 4 raised bands (covers detached & worn with leather loss to corners & crack down the mid-spine). Titlepage in red & black +[10]pp prelims +428pp Text in parallel Greek & Latin columns +[2]pp blank + Titlepage to Philocalia dated 1658 +[4]pp index +110pp +half title for Spencer's Annotations +98pp +[10]pp errors & index +[28]pp Hoeschel's Notes. Marginalia and neat old underlining thoughout but not intrusive. Slight top edge dusting and a single worm hole to the lower margin not touching text, lacks free endpapers and the last blank. Nice circular Coat of Arms bookplate on pastedown. *Origen's work preserves much of the philosopher Celsus's writing which would otherwise have been lost by quoting large parts verbatim in order to disprove them. First English printing of this important work (WING O424). Origen was taken with the magic of names and in Contra Celsum he warns that the name of Abraham & other patriarchs were so powerful that they could be misused even by those "who work wth incantations and other magical arts" (cf. Brian Coperhaver The Secret Names of God - available on Google).

PERCEY, WILLIAM
London: Printed by J. C. for Henry Fletcher, 1658. FIRST EDITION. This is the Britwell Court copy of a rare early work on swimming--the only copy to appear in auction records for more than 80 years. Just two books of instruction for swimmers were published earlier: "De arte natandi" (1538) by the Dutch writer Nicholas Winmann, and Sir Everard Digby's brief tract, published in Latin in 1589 and in English in 1595. As Percey explains in "To the Reader," the "only inducements to all actions . . . are pleasure and profit"; swimming offers the pleasure of "sporting our bodies upon and playing with the silver streams," and the profit of being healthful for our bodies. He offers advice on the proper seasons and weather for swimming (not on rainy days), and cautions against swimming every day. After covering the basic movements, he describes advanced maneuvers, including "the drawing on of boots" and "the leaping of the goat." ESTC locates just three copies in Britain (Birmingham, the Bodeleian, and the British Library), and five in the U.S. (Columbia, Yale, Huntington, Folger, the University of Illinois). OCLC finds additional copies at the Mariners Museum Library in the U.S. and the Bavarian State Library. Our previous owner was William Henry Miller (1789-1848), who began the great Britwell Court Library. It remained in the Christie-Miller family until the Britwell Library sale at Sotheby's in 1925 (lot 560). Since then, it has apparently resided in French private collections.. 145 x 90 mm. (5 3/4 x 3 1/2"). 6 p.l., 83 pp. FIRST EDITION. Attractive 19th century green polished cal … [Click Below for Full Description]

OSBORNE, Francis (1593-1659)
Oxford [i.e., London]: H[enry]. H[all]. for Tho. Robinson, 1658. Bound with: Advice to a Son. The Second Part. London: printed for Tho. Robinson in Oxford, 1658. 2 vols. in one, 12mo (139 x 83 mm). [8], 188, [8] pp., including final ad leaf. Part 2: [12], 189, [3] pp. Woodcut initials, type ornaments. Tear in leaf I1 in part 1 with loss to a few words. Contemporary blind-panelled calf (worn, some chips). Provenance: effaced signature on title dated April 1828, notes on front flyleaf in same hand; Robert S. Pirie, bookplate.*** A complete copy, with both parts, of one of the most cynical and entertaining of conduct books. Written by Osborne for his son John, and published anonymously in 1655, the work became an immediate bestseller while arousing energetic controversy. This copy contains a London copy (or counterfeit) of the considerably enlarged sixth edition of the first part, and one of three editions (all 1658) of the Second Part, published to follow up on the success of the original book. This was Osborne's principal work. Eminently quotable, his worldly and quite jaded counsels are grouped by subject in chapters titled Studies, Love and Marriage (highly misogynistic), Travel, Government, and Religion. "The book's pragmatism and cynicism may have furthered its rapid acceptance. Its frank and practical aim was to guide the reader to material success in a treacherous, self-seeking world. Popular with Oxford scholars, it enjoyed a wide readership outside the university as well. ... The tone of worldliness in the Advice contributed to Osborne's reputation for atheism. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Woodcut printer's mark on the title, depicting Pallas Athena under an apple tree, motto: 'Et flore et fructu') (Condition: Vellum soiled and spotted. Fading manuscript title on the back. In 1640 he took his Magister's degree, and was appointed a year later professor extraordinarius of Metaphysics at the University of Utrecht. There he showed himself an opponent of the philosophy of René Descartes. In the meantime he studied law, and got his law degree in 1645. A professorship of Logic and of Greek was offered to him in 1648. In 1645 he had already published his 'In Herodiani Marcum et Commodum Notae'. From 1652 he lectured also on law. He was a member of the Chamber of Justice in the nearby city of Vianen. As a professor of law he has laid with his publications the foundations of international private law, as he dealt with the question why a sovereign state should apply foreign law on its territory. In 1646 Voet published the first edition of his work on duels 'De duellis licitis et illicitis, liber singularis', in which he examined the phenomenon insult and duel. Abraham SAUR
Francoforte, 1658. Ghironi-Manno, Palmanova - Storia, progetti e cartografia urbana (1593- 1866), n. 12 105 85mm [Attributes: First Edition]
