        La vie de la venerable mere Isabelle des Anges, religieuse, carmelite deschausse'e, Professe du Conuent de Salamanque: et l'une des Fondatrices de l'Ordre de Nostre Dame due Mont-Carmel, selon la reforme de sainte Teeres, en France, decedée au Monastere de Limoges.

      Pierre le Petit;, Paris: 1658 - Paris: Pierre le Petit; 1658. 448 S. Ldr. mit 5 künstlichen Bünden und Goldschmuck. Kanten etwas berieben und bestossen. Leder am Rücken teils professionell ausgebessert. Gold minimal abgeplatzt und mit minimalen Wurmlöchern. Im Ganzen jedoch sehr ordentliches Exemplar. Selten! La Mère Isabelle des Anges (1565-1644) ist eine von sechs Karmeliterinnen, die 1604 von Spanien nach Paris kam und dort an der Verbreitung karmelitischer Klöster mitwirkte. Der Karmeliterorden (Ordo Fratrum Beatae Mariae Virginis de Monte Carmelo) ist nach dem im hl. Land liegenden Gebirgszug Karmel benannt. Dort ließen sich nach der Eroberung Palästinas durch die Kreuzfahrer Eremiten nieder, welche die Traditionen des frühchr. Mönchstums, der weltabgewandten Askese bzw. strengster Armut pflegten. Die Tradition führt den Karmeliterorden auf den Propheten Elias zurück, der neunhundert Jahre vor Christus lebte und die Erscheinung der Maria in einer Wolke erblickte. Der entscheidene Impuls zu dem großen Aufblühen eines weibl. Ordenszweiges erfolgte erst in der 2. Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts in Spanien im Zusammenhang mit der von Teresa v. Avila und Johannes vom Kreuz initiierten und von Kg. Philipp II, geförderten Reformbewegung. Der Orden nimmt in Anspruch, gegründet worden zu sein, um die Muttergottes zu verehren. Die heilige Teresa von Avila sagt deutlich, daß das Verlangen der Karmeliter dahin geht, "allein mit dem Alleinigen zu sein". Gott offenbart sich dem Herzen in Einsamkeit und daher arbeitet jede Nonne so viel wie möglich allein ihrer Zelle. Sprache: Französisch Kanten etwas berieben und bestossen. Leder am Rücken teils professionell ausgebessert. Gold minimal abgeplatzt und mit minimalen Wurmlöchern. Im Ganzen jedoch sehr ordentliches Exemplar. Selten!         A late Discourse Made in a Solemne Assembly of Nobles and Learned Men at Montpellier in France … Touching the Cure of Wounds by the Powder of Sympathy;

      London: printed for R. Lowndes, and T. Davies,, 1658. With Instructions how to make the said Powder; whereby many other Secrets of Nature are unfolded. Rendered faithfully out of French into English By R. White, Gent. The second Edition corrected and augmented, with the addition of an Index. Duodecimo (139 × 75 mm). Contemporary unlettered sheep sewn on two cords, unlined, double blind rules. Engraved bookplate of William Tempest of the Inner Temple, 1702, to blank A3v; 1900 ownership inscription to initial blank. With final index and advert leaf. Spine restored at head and tail, corners worn, title leaf with small tear in gutter costing one letter and small part of typographic frame, fore edge of same leaf a little frayed, a little light spotting, still a good copy. Second edition in English, same year as the first, a translation of a lecture delivered to a congress of French virtuosi, giving Digby's complex mechanical explanation of the "sympathetic powder", a Paracelsian weapon-salve which was applied to the weapon that inflicted the wound, rather than to the patient. Exiled in Paris after the English civil war, Digby studied chemistry under the Scottish royal physician, William Davidson. He had "cured his friend James Howell, then the duke of Buckingham's secretary, of a sword-cut in the hand by dissolving some powdered vitriol crystals in water and plunging into the mixture a cloth stained with blood from the wound. The pain in Howell's hand, some yards away, immediately ceased … Many were convinced by Digby's evidence, including Joseph Glanvill, later a Royal Society fellow, and Nathaniel Highmore, a distinguished anatomist and friend of William Harvey. In fact the cure lay in washing and bandaging the wound" (ODNB).

        Histoire naturelle et morale des Iles Antilles de l'Amerique

      Rotterdam 1658 - First edition, a remarkable early Huguenot emigration guide. 1658. Rotterdam. Arnout Leers. In 4to (230 mm x 165 mm). 2 [blank] + 8 ff. [including engraved title] + 527 + 6 ff. + 2 [blank] + 44 plates, many of which full page. Contemporary vellum over boards, head with upper hinge starting with minor loss of vellum, else very good. A fine example, very clean and fresh, only slightly foxed. Rare first edition, issue with L. D. P. (Louis de Poincy, to whom authorship has been attributed) in the dedicatory epistle, possibly the rarest issue. In fact, the authorship has been long debated, according to Sabin, ¿Much of the material may have been collected by De Poincy, but the principal or rather sole compiler of the work appears to have been Charles de Rochefort¿; today the consensus is that it was written by Rochefort, the Dutch edition of 1662 so confirms it. A truly remarkable work on the islands of the Caribbean, arguably intended as an emigrant guide; the first part relates mainly and contains extensive details on the region´s natural history, the second part deals with the manners, customs, trade, religion, organization and administration of the Caribs. The work finishes with a vocabulary of the Carib language by Father Raymond Breton. The work is profusely and handsomely illustrated with 43 copper-plates of varying sizes, a full page portrait of Jacques Amproux and a splendid engraved title page. Brunet III, 206. Sabin, 72314.         FOUR CONTINENTS] Europa delineata et recens edita; Asiæ nova delineata; Africæ accurata tabula; Nova et accuratissima totius Americæ descriptio

      Visscher, [Amsterdam 1658 - A set of the four continental maps from the Golden Age of Dutch cartography The Dutch were especially well equipped for the role they played in the European discovery and colonization of the wider world. Unencumbered by any desire to impose their religious or political beliefs, they simply wanted to trade commodities and profit thereby. The ascendancy of the Dutch in global trade lasted only as long as they could withstand the English and French, who, with much larger populations, ultimately overwhelmed them, but for a considerable portion of the 17th century, the Dutch were supreme. The outlines of the world the Dutch merchantmen discovered was conveyed to the rest of Europe (as Spain and Portugal did not) in beautifully engraved and coloured maps that resonated with authority. In these four maps by Visscher, with only a few exceptions (Hokkaido, Australia, New Zealand and the mythical Anian), the continents are delineated and defined in a remarkably accurate way. This was the accumulation of the day to day observations of sea captain / tradesmen, who at this time gave the world the first comprehensive sea charts. The Dutch were tradesmen and seafarers, not conquerors or settlers, so the fundamental advancement in geographical knowledge was in coastlines and rivers, as if in preparation for the great movements of peoples to come. The interiors derive from other, less reliable sources, some of them ancient as the Ptolemaic interior of Africa. The four maps form a balanced composition and an aesthetically appealing portrait of the newly discovered World. Visscher's cartouches are light, optimistic and exuberant, happily implying a bright future. Each of the four maps bears a dedicatory cartouche to a prominent Dutch statesman and illustrates his coat of arms, usually surrounded by gods, goddesses and angels. Betz, 87; Norwich 55; Burden, 332. Four hand-coloured copper engraved maps.

        Nova Orbis Terrarum Delineatio Singulari Ratione Accommodata Meridiano Tabb. Rudolphi Astronomicarum

      1658. 380 x 680mm., large engraved hemispherical world map, surmounted by the two headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire bound in KEPLER, JOHANN. Tabulae Rudolphinae, quibus astronomicae scientiae, temporum longinquitate collapsae restauratio continetur. Ulm: Jonas Saur, 1627. 2 parts in one volume, folio (338 x 224mm). second issue of first 2 quires, engraved frontispiece by Georg Celer, large folding engraved map, woodcut diagrams in text, eighteenth-century vellum, early manuscript annotations, calculations and diagrams in margins, without the 4 inserted leaves ("Sportula genethliacis"), map supplied from another copy and washed, several printed marginal notes slightly shaved, binding slightly wormed on both covers. FIRST EDITION. These tables of planetary motion were completed by Kepler in 1601, at the request of Tycho Brahe shortly before his death. They gave far more accurate positions than those in previous tables. Casper identified three issues of the first two quires of this first edition: the present copy contains the second issue of both quires. A four-leaf "Sportula genethliacis missa de Tabularum Rudolphi usu in computationibus astrologicis" was added ti sine cioues at the end of the first part; it is not present in this copy. This rare and striking map shows a dramatic rendering of the two-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire. The map was prepared at the request of Eckebrecht's friend Johann Kepler. The map's arrangement of one bifurcated hemisphere on either side of a complete hemisphere faclitates the calculation of longitude using Kepler's tables. "The design harks back to Braun's inspiring wall map of 1574 which is also headed by the imperial double-headed eagle and has the continents in bifurcated form" (Shirley). While the map is dated 1630, and in cartographical terms is of that period, it could not have been published until years later, as it bears a dedication to Emperor Leopold who ascended the throne in 1658. No earlier state is recorded. REFERENCES: Shirley 335; Caspar 79; Houzeau & Lancaster 12754; Norman 1208; Zinner 5063. First Edition. Book.

        Animalium: Historia Sacra

      Jan Jansson, Amsterdam 1658 - 5th edition of a book very popular in its time, which includes natural histories of dragons, unicorns and many other seldom-seen beasties. 16mo in stiff vellum boards, probably original (though the endpapers are not), with leather stitching probably added later. Edges stained blue. The engraved title page depicts many creatures both familiar and strange. Good; the repair of the binding makes it quite stiff, broken at title page (1cm portion of title page attached to fep). Spot stains on rear board; some stains on outer pages but mostly very clean. The title page bears an interesting history of owners: at the bottom is written "Ad libros Johannis Mulleri pertice", probably the 1st owner; then there is "J.D. Mauser ex patr. libr. 1742"; also "Plagwitz - Leipzig 1880". All are written quite small. The type is very small here but well printed, by a publisher known for some early editions of the Mercator Atlas. 631 pp. + indices.

With a handwritten gift inscription to Johann Schweyckheuser from Bernhard Wagner dated August 15 1713, a stamp from Bibliotheca Heberiana, Johann Lorenz Blessigs and another, unidentified, book plate.VD17 23:231187M. Written in Latin, Greek and German. A printed dedication to the Swedish king Karl X Gustav. The gift inscription is signed by Bernhard Wagner, Dr Teol, to Johann Georg Schweyckheuser "theologia studioso industrio", who was respondent to the dissertation "Theologica de indremento in sanctitatis studio fasciendo: ex I. Thess. cap V. vers 23" with Johann Heinrich Barth as president in Strassbourg on August 15 1713. Johann Lorenz Blessig (1747-1816) was a German protestant clergyman and a university teacher. He was born in Strassbourg. After studies in the university there, he travelled to Italy, Hungary and Germany, took the cloth and was eventually promoted to head the protestant church in Strassbourg. He became professor at the philosophical faculty of the university of his hometown in 1778 and at the theological faculty in 1787. He was appointed headmaster three times and his lectures covered areas such as Greek literature, history of philosophy, exegetics of the Old Testament, dogmatics and homiletics. His bookplate depicts the interior of a library. The upturn of bookcollecting in England in the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century reached its peak and fall in conjunction with the dissolving of the enormous library collected by Richard Heber (1773-1833), an almost unequalled bibliophile. He used to say that "a gentleman should have at least three copies of every book, one for show, one to read and one to lend". From 1800 to 1830 he was buying at every auction in London, either in his own name or through his agents. When he died, his books filled two houses in London, one in Hodnet, one in Oxford, one in Gent and one in Paris not to mention the books which were deposited in smaller bookshops in Brussels, Antwerp and other cities on the continent. The total amount of his collection must have been somewhere between two- and three hundred thousand. Probably no private individual has owned that many books since. It took sixteen auctions to dissolve Heber's library, thirteen in London, two in Paris and one in Gent. The total amount of the London sales amounted to 56.774 pounds for books that had cost the previous owner a fair bit over 100.000 pounds. The market was completely flooded. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Morgenländische Reyse-Beschreibung.

      Hamburg, Christian Guth (printed by Johan Holwein, Schleswig), 1658.. Folio. (32), 248, (36) pp. With engraved frontispiece by Christian Rothgiesser, full-page engraved author's portrait, double-page engraved map, and 21 large engravings in text, mostly signed by Rothgiesser; woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces. Contemporary blind-ruled leather, remnants of ties.. First complete German edition of an important and entertaining travel account by Johann Albrecht von Mandelslo, edited by Adam Olearius. Mandelslo was attached to the diplomatic mission of Frederick III, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, to Moscow and Persia. Frederick's aim was to negotiate a new trade route for Persian silk and to make his small duchy an important centre of European silk trade. After visiting Moscow, the mission continued along the Volga to Astrakhan and from there to Persia, crossing the Caspian Sea near Shamakhi. Via Ardabil, Qazvin and Kasan the party finally reached the capital, Isfahan. The ambassadors remained in Persia for several months (only to return without concrete results), but Mandelslo travelled further to the east. He sailed from Hormuz to Surat and proceeded through Gujarat to Agra, Lahore, Goa, Bijapur and Malaba, visiting Ceylon, Madagascar, the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena on his return voyage in 1639. Before his death 5 years later, he had entrusted his rough notes to Olearius, who subsequently published them with a third part containing descriptions of the Coromandel coast, Bengal, Siam, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Bantam, the Philippines, Formosa (Tai-wan), China and Japan. Small contemporary owner's entry ("Jos[eph] Baudler"?). Some foxing and brownstaining; slight tears in lower margin of pp. 31 and 137. He graduated at Padua in 1525 and then practised medicine successfully in his native town. He was a friend of Dodoens and Conrad Gesner. This work was his most famous and important, a Book of Secrets with large sections on medical matters and natural history: procreation and birth, medicinal plants, influence of the moon on plant growth, epilepsy, sleepwalkers, sleeping with an open mouth, the benefits of wine drinking, alcoholism, healing power of gemstones. Symson [Simson], Church of Scotland minister and printer, who on relinquishing his ministry after the re-establishment of presbyterianism, moved to Edinburgh where he set up a printing house in the Cowgate. Acknowledging that books were ‘my delight, my heart, worth nectar and ambrosia’, he claimed in 1696 that surrounded ‘with walls of books on all sides, I dwell safe as in a fortress’ (Symson, Octupla, preface). Upon death and following the publication of a catalogue entitled Bibliotheca Symsoniana, his collection of over 4000 books was sold by lottery and auction. See ODNB.
