SANSON NICOLAS
Copper engraving, mm 410x535, engraved by Jean Somer, published by Pierre Mariette, Sanson's business partner.First state of Sanson's scarce map of China and Korea, first published in 1656. An important and sought after french map of China, northern part of the Philippines, Korea. It is based on a chinese map copied by Matteo Ricci, brought back to Rome in 1590 by Michele Ruggieri.Very interesting to note is the strange form of Korea, which was generally shown as an island in the 17th century; Sanson's depiction is also a cartographic improvement as he joins Korea to the mainland. The Great Wall closes the map in the north, a detailed explanation panel in bottom right corner. Good general condition, restored worm track in bottom margin slightly affecting the engraved border.Pastoureau, 10, pag. 402.

Zesen, Philipp v.
"Otto van Veen was one of the foremost printers und best engravers of his time, Rubens having been his pupil. In the field of book illustrations he be … [Click Below for Full Description]

This was the most popular surgical text of the 17th century." "Schultes (1595-1645), born at Ulm on the Danube, was a pupil of Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente (as was William Harvey) and Adriaan van de Spiegel at Padua where he received a doctorate in medicine, surgery, and philosophy. [PASCAL, Blaise]. MONTALTE, Louis de.
Cologne [Paris]: Pierre de la Valle, [1656-]1657. Cologne [Paris]: Pierre de la Vallée, [1656-]1657. First edition. Hardcover. A beautiful copy of Pascal's 18 Provincial letters, bound in fine red morocco in 1865 by Chambolle-Duru, from the collection of Benzon (his sales catalogue no. 42, 1875) with two further rare works relating to Pascal. Provenance: inscription to title ‘Ex libris Congregationis domus Missionis Trecensis', repeated on the 8th letter.
❧PMM 140. “The Lettres Provinciales, as they are called, are the first example of French prose as we know it today, perfectly finished in form, varied in style, and on a subject of universal importance… [Pascal] was an infant prodigy, whose work in mathematics and natural science attracted considerable attention before he was sixteen... [But he] will always be chiefly remembered as a moralist, more especially as the great apologist for Jansenism, the seventeenth-century French ascetic movement of reform inside the Roman Catholic Church... At the end of 1655, the movement had been much under attack from the Jesuits, and Pascal was persuaded to write a rejoinder... [his] counter-attack took the form of a brilliant exposure of the casuistical methods of argument employed by the Jesuits... Pascal's weapon was irony, and the freshness with which the gravity of the subject contrasts with the lightness of the manner is an enduring triumph. The vividness and distinction of his style recalls Milton at its best.” (Printing and the Mind of Man).

The style of the letters meant that, quite apart from … [Click Below for Full Description]

Salvatore ROSA
ROSA Salvatore Figurine. Varia et concinna delineamenta N. n., n. p. n. d. [circa 1656], small in-4 (15,5 x 22 cm), one frontispice et 60 plates, restoration-period binding62 etchings on thick paper. Very rare.Salvatore Rosa made these etchings around 1656 in a collection originally entitled Figurine. This collection has a different title in the cartouche on the frontispiece, just as another copy in the Soares dos reis Portuguese National Museum bears the title: Has ludentis oty Carolo Rubeo singularis amititiae pignantes. D. D. D. The copy in the Portuguese museum is cataloged as a posthumous edition from the 18th century. Most of the engravings in this set can be seen separately at the Fine Art Museum of San Francisco (the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Art, the biggest collection of engravings in America). The Los Angeles County Museum has 8, while the Museum of Fine Art in Boston has 4. The engravings are described as having the same format as our set (13.6 x 8.9 cm), some engraved after anonymous artists, others drawn by Salvatore Rosa himself; the stylistic differences are clearly visible. The frontispiece of the copy held in the San Francisco museum is blank. The museum has only 52 engravings, all reversed. All the engravings in the present set have a monogram with the two letters, S and R interlaced. Some of the monograms are reversed, which leads one to think that the plates themselves are also reversed.Plate 29 has been repaired, the lower margin under the engraving has been replaced (the plate having been at some point cut to the edge of the image). Socinus, Faustus.
no publisher/printer [Frans Kuyper & Daniel Bakkamude], 1656. Socinus, a jurist-theologian from Siena, first met with Polish Antitrinitarians in 1578. He moved to Krakow in 1580 and devoted the rest of his life to fostering a cohesive religious movement that denied the Holy Trinity based on rational exegesis of Scripture. While Socinianism and the Radical Reformation won many followers, Socinus (Fausto Sozzini, 1539-1604) was also attacked -- in writing and, in 1594 and 1598, on the street! => This is the second of volume of the only edition, first issue, of the first and most important collection of Socinian documents and the second volume of Socinus' Opera. The contents of this volume are: Contra Palaeologum de Magistratu; De Christo servatore, contra covetum; De Statu primi hominis ante lapsum; De natura Christi; and Contra theologicas collegii Posnaniensis (with seven subsection). Thes series in which this was published, Bibliotheca fratrum polonorum comprised ten tomes published clandestinely ca. 1665-92 by the Polish Brethren called Unitarians. The near-complete works of Socinus himself, leading that parade of texts, occupy these first two, which were actually published three years after vols. III-V (by Johann Crell and Jonasz Szlichtyng), all with => false imprints. Excerpts of Socinus's => acrid debates with protagonists of the Reformation on baptism, redemption, (im)mortality, and the nature of Christ pervade the present volume. The minister-turned-printer Kuyper (1629-91) produced only Socinian works in the decade 1663-73, many edited by Andreas Wissowatius … [Click Below for Full Description]
