CASTELLI, Francesco.
ICCU (3 copies described as "[1656]" with additional material); Thieme & Becker VI, pp. 152-153. First edition of the extensive defence by Francesco Castelli (1599-1667) of his 1648 designs for a new façade for the Milan Cathedral (plates 4-6), published as a result of the rejection of his designs. A second edition or reissue with additional material appeared in 1656. There is no full-fledged title-page, but a sort of half-title without the author's name or imprint. Although many architects, including no less a figure than Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini, had endorsed Castelli's designs (all published in this work), the design of his competitor Carlo Buzzi (ca. 1585-1658) was chosen (plate 3). Buzzi had been recently and unexpectedly appointed head of the church factory of the Cathedral, succeeding Francesco Maria Richini (1584-1658), who had also designed a new façade elaborating on earlier designs by Pellegrino Tibaldi (1527-1596) (plates 1-2).Richini's design was romanesque in style and Buzzi's gothic, while Castelli's combined gothic and baroque elements. The judgments of many Italian architects on such a controversial project as the replacement of the façade of one of the most important cathedrals in Italy provides us with a highly interesting discussion. We are given a clear insight into how the most important Italian architects of the mid-17th century (Bernini among them) viewed the different architectural styles, and it gives us an impression of their preferences. This extremely rare work is therefore of the utmost importance for the history of architecture and the role of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Von Wolzogen, Johann Ludwig.
Irenopoli [Amsterdam]: no publisher/printer [Frans Kuyper, & Daniel Bakkamude], 1656 [i.e., 1668]. Folio (31.7 cm, 12.5"). 2 vols. I: [3] ff., 1038 pp. [i.e., 1044] (lacking one sectional title-page). II: 356 [i.e., 360], [4] pp.; 132 [i.e., 134] pp., [4] ff. (lacking title-page, engr. portrait, & six sectional title-pages). Only edition, second issue, of volumes eight and nine from the series Bibliotheca fratrum polonorum. Exegetist Johann Ludwig von Wolzogen (ca. 1599–1658) was an Austrian nobleman who became a prominent voice among the Polish Brethren called Unitarians, proponents of Socinianism and the Radical Reformation that denied the Holy Trinity based on rational exegesis of Scripture. Their collected writings, the => first and most important collection of Socinian documents, were clandestinely published ca. 1665–92 in ten volumes with => false imprints to evade censors.    Like the rest of the series, these two volumes of Von Wolzogen's exegetical, didactical, and polemical works are imprinted with the date 1656, without a publisher; however it is known they were published in Amsterdam by Frans Kuyper (1629–91) and Daniel Bakkamude (1662–85), perhaps with Hendrick Boom (1657–1709), whose monogrammed printer's device appears on some of the sectional title-pages. Kuyper, a former minister, produced only Socinian works in the decade 1663–73.    The first volume contains exegesis of the Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and the second, commentary on the Acts and the epistles of Paul, Jacob, and Jude, with contributions from Wissowatius, Crellius, and Schlichtingi … [Click Below for Full Description]

VENEZIA (Repubblica)
Dopo 1656, (Venezia). [Click Below for Full Description]

Künstler, I,68.

WARD, Seth
London: Jacob Flesher, 1656 Only edition of this important illustrated astronomical text by English mathematician, autodidact, and astronomer Seth Ward on Kepler's Second Law of Planetary Motion, one of three fundamental laws of astronomy and physics which 1) describes elliptical orbits with the Sun at one of two foci, 2) dictates equal areas and equal time intervals swept out by a rotating line segment, and 3) states that the square of the orbital period of a body is proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis of its orbit. The Astronomia Geometrica was essentially Ward's second, and more complete, response to Ismail Boulliau's Astronomia Philolaica (Paris: 1645), in which Boulliau attempted to remove some of the notorious difficulties that Kepler's Second Law had presented to astronomers in the thirty-six years since its introduction to science. But Boulliau, in his work, succeeded in making matters only worse. He imagined cones of sorts, and pictured planets moving about axes central to these cones. Ward, in Astronomia Geometrica, remarked that this was like imagining a body moving in an "elliptical orbit with uniform angular velocity about the empty focus of the ellipse (the Sun being at the other focus)". (ODNB) Ward, in his work, was able to greatly simplify Boulliau's complexities. Ward's work was highly influential, especially among the next generation of English and Continental astronomers, who would have had to have struggled with trial and error and tedious approximation using Kepler's original formulae. An attractive volume, well printed with scores of typo … [Click Below for Full Description]

TAYLOR, Jeremy, D.D.
London: R. Royston 1656. First edition. 16mo. Full leather. lacks front end paper. Title, preface. The disclaimer to the rear of the book is interesting, in which the publisher begs the reader’s forgiveness for having published the book without Taylor’s permission, in the hope that he would achieve Taylor’s forgiveness. This is probably a little disingenuous. Royston was certainly Taylor’s publisher, but his indiscretion in displaying a crucifix in his office had led to the imprisonment of Taylor shortly before this work was printed. 144 [x]. pp The leather is a little rubbed, particularly to the spine, but is holding well, and still presentable. lacks front end paper (blank). The title has been restored with a small area of loss replaced. The rest of the book is clean and tidy throughout. Corner of loss to the rear end paper. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Pirogallo Francesco Maria
per Gio. Andrea Magri, 1656.
