Daniel King, etc.
United Kingdom: The Vale-Royal of England or, The County Palatine of Chester Illustrated. Wherein is contained a Geographical and Historical Description of that Famous County, with all its Hundreds and Seats of the Nobility, Gentry and Freeholders The history and antiquities of the county of Chester in northwestern England, edited and introduced by Daniel King, with material by William Smith, William Webb, and Samuel Lee. Illustrations are by King and Wenceslaus Hollar. This text features a double-page map of the county, three textual illustrations, and two plates. Other copies of this book also include eleven plates with illustrations of coats of arms, but these seem never to have been included in this copy. One of the plate illustrations in this copy, a handsome depiction of the court of Hugh Lupus, Earle of Chester, does not appear in any other copy that I've located online. Also, interestingly, two original errata slips remain present. Additionally, at the end of this volume is A Short Treatise on the Isle of Man by James Chaloner, who was to become governor of the island. This 29-page treatise is illustrated with a coat of arms plate and a double-page map. Condition: The book was rebound in the early 1800s with new endpapers, flyleaves, and title page; the original title page is missing, so that the 1656 text opens on the dedication page. This page shows signs of repair. The covers have wear and some water damage, as seen in the photos; the water staining has almost no effect on the text. There are ownership marks on the front endpaper, dated 1836 and 1932; also some n … [Click Below for Full Description]

Homer
Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1656. 2 vols. bound as 1, 4to, pp. [xvi], 716, 536, [44]. Engraved title-page before the Iliad, letterpress section-title before the Odyssey (dated 1655). Early English blind-ruled calf, preserving an old printer's-waste flyleaf (see below) at rear. Toned, some spotting and light staining throughout, heavier at beginning where there is also some dampmarking, a few corners slightly worn. Plainly rebacked, modern endpapers, corners worn and reinforced with glue. Early ownership inscription of Alex. Butterworth to title-page, along with the inscription of R. Townly (dated 1743) and a doodle of a male bust. The increasingly hard-to-find Elzevir Homer, usually so called though actually printed by Hackius in Leiden and co-published by the Elzevirs in Amsterdam - some copies have Hackius's name in the imprint on one or both title-pages, though this one is a 'double-Elzevir'. The accuracy of its printing has been criticised, though 'some consider it as recommendable from having the Scholia of the Iliad reprinted for the first time since the parent text of 1517' (Dibdin), and in fact this is the first time the Greek text, Latin translation, and scholia have all shared the page. The piece of printer's waste preserved in this volume is printed music, specifically a trimmed example of leaf B2 (first sequence) from the Psalterium Carolinum (1657), by the English composer and lutenist John Wilson (1595-1674), a songwriter for the Kings' Men and possible acquaintance of Shakespeare. FISHER, James [HATFIELD, Martha]
London: John Rothwell, 1656. A remarkable survival of the third edition of the popular interregnum account of Sheffield Presbyterian minister James Fisher's 11-year-old niece Martha Hatfield's prophetic dialogues following her recovery from a devastating catalepsy that had left her "dumb, deaf, and blind." Martha's disease, which defies modern retrodiagnostics, was at the time characterized as "spleen-winde," a term even the Oxford English Dictionary has overlooked. Her sufferings were as variable as they were extraordinary--the young girl at one point endured a 17-day fugue state during which her eyes remained open and fixed and she gnashed her teeth to the breaking point. In counterpoise to the horrors of her infirmity, her utterances in periods of remission and upon recovery were of great purity and sweetness; it is this stark contrast that was, and is, the persistent allure of this little book. The Wise Virgin appeared five times between 1653 and 1665; some editions have a portrait frontispiece, and it is entirely possible that the present third edition should have one at A1v, though the copy scanned by Early English Books Online does not. Rare; copies located at Yale and Oxford (from which the EEBO copy was made) only. Octavo, 143 x 97 x 23 mm (binding), 139 x 94 x 18 mm (text block). A-M8, N3. Lacks A1, blank or portrait? [26], 170 pp. Bound in contemporary calf, upper board reattached, somewhat later marbled and blank ends. Leather rubbed with minor loss to extremities. Gilt lettered maroon leather title label in second spine compartment. Bit of splay to boards. Period po sums to eps. A VG copy. Item #34515 Around 1650, Osborne left public service & moved to Oxford, where, for the "last eight years of his life he published a series of historical, political, and moral works, which were read widely during the Restoration and early 18th C. His thinking shows the influence of Hobbes, whose 'great acquaintance' he was (Brief Lives, 1.370)." Osborne is best known for his Advice to a Son, which made him somewhat a celebrity, and helped occasion Pepys' "fondly calling the author 'my father Osborne' and recording in his Diary that Sir William Petty listed the Advice with Browne's Religio Medici and Butler's Hudibras as the works 'most esteemed and generally cried up for wit in the world' (Pepys, Diary, 19 Oct 1661; 27 Jan 1664)." [ODNB]. Here in this work, Osborne reflects on the greatness of the Ottoman Empire, though Madan notes Osborne was taken to task for his section on Machiavel, for it greatly resembled a 1642 pamphlet entitled "The Atheistical Politician, or a Briefe Discourse concerning Ni. Machiavell". Politicall Reflections a somewhat scarce title in the trade, appearing at auction only a couple times a decade, where, we note … [Click Below for Full Description]

Salvator ROSA
Bibliografia Etching with touches of drypoint, signed in plate lower right. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, thin margins, in excellent condition. The Rosa has performed three prints of this type depicting the battle of newts, probably very congenial to his own way of interpreting the ancient heroic. It is clear in the artist the inspiration derived from the Battles of marine Gods by Andrea Mantegna, which also recreates the joyful spirit of pagan myth, and with similar compositions of Odoardo Fialetti. The works appear to have been made in the same period of Different figures, dating from between 1656 and 1658. GURNALL, William
1656. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. William Gurnall was a 17th-century Anglican author most remembered for his book 'Christian in Complete Armour'. This book is a collection of sermons and theological lectures regarding ministry. Most of the lectures in this treatise deal with spiritual warfare and combat with practical applications on how to strengthen one's spiritual armor and weapons. Gurnall describes many of the Satan's schemes and temptations, as well as the wickedness of demons. [Attributes: First Edition]

Alciati and Pallavicino had access to many important sources which had been denied to Sarpi. The Council of Trent (Latin: Concilium Tridentinum), held between 1545 and 1563 in Trent (or Trento, in northern Italy), was the 19th ecumenical council of the Catholic Church.[1] Prompted by the Protestant Reformation, it has been described as the embodiment of the Counter-Reformation.The Council issued condemnations of what it defined to be heresies committed by proponents of Protestantism, and also issued key statements and clarifications of the Church's doctrine and teachings, including scripture, the Biblical canon, sacred tradition, original sin, justification, salvation, the sacraments, the Mass and the veneration of saints.[4] The Council met for twenty-five sessions between 13 December 1545 and 4 December 1563.[5] Pope Paul III, who convoked the Council, oversaw the first eight sessions (1545-47), while the twelfth to sixteenth sessions (1551-52) were overseen by Pope Ju … [Click Below for Full Description]
