Evelyn, John
London: Printed for Gabriel Bedle, and Thomas Collins, 1656. [16],185,[7]pp., with pp. 81-96 omitted from pagination, as usual. Small octavo. Modern three quarter calf and boards. Engraved frontis by W. Hollar after Mary Evelyn. Early ink ownership inscription on top edge of verso of frontis, a few slightly later ink notes on blank verso of last advert leaf, a couple of early ink marginal highlights, imprint at base of frontis cut into when originally bound, with platemark shaved at fore-edge (as often), otherwise about very good. First edition of this early work by Evelyn, ushered into public view by prefatory verses by Edmund Waller and Evelyn's father-in-law Sir Richard Browne, as well as a letter by Richard Fanshawe. Evelyn's translation precedes his essay, and is printed in parallel with the Latin text. Keynes recounts how the considerable number of printer's errors vexed Evelyn no end, and played a part in his electing not to publish the manuscript of his translation of the five remaining books. Casaubon, Meric
London: Printed by Roger Daniel, and are to be sold by Thomas Iohnson, at the Golden Key in St. Paul's Church-yard, Anno, 1656 1599-1671 Ocatvo, 6.4 x 4.2 inches. Second edition. A-T8, V6. 297 pages. This is a good copy in a later quarter calf binding. This was the first separate treatise on enthusiasm, a term used for conditions attributed to possession by a superior power. Casaubon divided it into two kinds; supernatural which was 'a true possession, whether divine or diabolical,' and natural 'whereof all men are capable' to which belonged the delusions and hallucinations of the insane; the first not less real for being rare, the second common. "Casaubon had read 'The Life of Sister Katharine of Jesus' published at Paris, 1628, 'a long contexture of severall strange raptures and enthusiasms, that had hapned unto a melancholick, or if you will, a devout maid.' Despite approbations from a cardinal, an archbishop, a bishop and several doctors of divinity, Casaubon could find 'no great matter of wonder' in it but instead 'a perpetuall coherence of naturall causes.' Disturbed 'that what by such, and so many, was judged God, and Religion, should be nothing but Nature and Superstition,' he determined to investigate the whole matter thoroughly and this book was the result. Its main purpose was to survey historically cases and opinions so as to distill and preserve the belief in true divine intervention from adulteration with 'natural enthusiasm' with which it was often confused to its disrepute: 'to embrace a cloud, or a fog for a deity; it is done by many, but it is a foul mist … [Click Below for Full Description]

Subscription receipt for the Walton Polyglot Bible].
[London], 10 June 1656. 1f. Oblong 8vo (c. 240:84 mm). Blank form filled in in ink, with papered seal. Payment receipt for the fifth installment for one of the earliest works in British printing history published by subscription, according to Dibdin (I, 23) "the first book ever published in that manner in England": "Received this [10th] day of [June] in the year of our Lord God [1656] of [Jn. Gell Esq.] the summe of [two Pounds] being the [fourth] payment of [ten pounds] by him subscribed or promised, towards the printing of the Bible in the Original & other learned Languages: Witness my hand and seal, the day and the year above written". The Bible edition for which Gell was eventually to pay 10 pounds is the Polyglot Bible edited by Brian Walton (1660-61), "the most accurate and best equipped of the great Polyglots" (Darlow/Moule, 23). The Oxford-educated orientalist Walton drew up a scheme for the project as early as 1847: "[H]aving secured the approval of the Bishops of London, Ely, Salisbury, Rochester, Lincoln, and Exeter, in 1652 he invited subscriptions for the forthcoming Bible, and entrusted the funds to the management of a worthy London citizen, William Humble. This polyglot was one of the earliest publications printed by subscription in England" (ibid., 23f.). The "worthy London citizen" Humble, who administrated the subscription payments and in whose hand the present receipt is filled in, is in all likelihood the London bookseller of that name, whose shop "The White Horse" operated in Pope's Head Alley until 1659 (cf. Plomer, Dict. of booksellers & printers). - … [Click Below for Full Description]

Second Edition (first: 1597) of this interesting compilation on apparitions and demons. "Grosse's Magica is an exceedingly extensive and learned compilation of magical 'precedent cases', and his sources extend from Homer to Petrarch, Luther and Melanchthon. He seems to be mainly interested in showing that demons are essentially swindlers who, although really of a satanic nature, pretend to be angels in order to entice ignorant, unsuspecting, and credulous people into Satan's net." (Faber du Faur) "C'est, avec celui de Lavater, l'ouvrage le plus complet sur les spectres et les revenants." (Dorbon) This important work was apparently overlooked by Thorndike. REFUGE, [Eustache de]
Amsterdam: chez les Elzeviers, 1656. 12mo, pp. [viii], 305 (ie 350), [xxvi]. Contemporary name on title-page and later ownership signature on e.p. Bound in contemporary vellum, a nice clean copy. Heltzel 493 (1622 edn); see Aresty p. 98ff. Originally issued in 1616, this work "resembled Castiglione's book in only one respect: it too was written to guide a courtier. [However] a courtier named Du Refuge, wrote in the spirit of Machiavelli, and while he favored the cultivation of the social graces, he constantly adopted the realistic 17th century approach to getting ahead amidst fierce competition, stripping away the idealistic pretense that courtesy books and chivalric writings had so long maintained. While it did not make attractive reading, it was sound advice for the courtier who sought success in a system somewhat similar to that in which the organization man moves today"[Aresty, The Best Behavior, p. 98]. Refuge's work continued to be popular well in the 18th century. This was reprinted under slightly different titles in 1664 and 1665. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ROSA Salvatore
S.n., 1656. Fine. S.n. Ca 1656, petit in 4, un frontispice et 60 planches., relié. - ROSA Salvatore Figurine. Varia et concinna delineamenta N. n., n. p. n. d. [circa 1656], small in-4 (15,5 x 22 cm), one frontispice et 60 plates, restoration-period binding 62 etchings on thick paper. Very rare. Salvatore Rosa made these etchings around 1656 in a collection originally entitled Figurine. This collection has a different title in the cartouche on the frontispiece, just as another copy in the Soares dos reis Portuguese National Museum bears the title: Has ludentis oty Carolo Rubeo singularis amititiae pignantes. D. D. D. The copy in the Portuguese museum is cataloged as a posthumous edition from the 18th century. Most of the engravings in this set can be seen separately at the Fine Art Museum of San Francisco (the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Art, the biggest collection of engravings in America). The Los Angeles County Museum has 8, while the Museum of Fine Art in Boston has 4. The engravings are described as having the same format as our set (13.6 x 8.9 cm), some engraved after anonymous artists, others drawn by Salvatore Rosa himself; the stylistic differences are clearly visible. The frontispiece of the copy held in the San Francisco museum is blank. The museum has only 52 engravings, all reversed. All the engravings in the present set have a monogram with the two letters, S and R interlaced. Some of the monograms are reversed, which leads one to think that the plates themselves are also reversed. Plate 29 has been repaired, the lower margin under the engraving has … [Click Below for Full Description]

1656. [OSBORNE, Francis.] ADVICE TO A SON; OR, DIRECTIONS FOR YOUR BETTER CONDUCT THROUGH THE VARIOUS AND MOST IMPORTANT ENCOUNTERS OF THIS LIFE. UNDER THESE GENERALL HEADS. I. STUDIES. II. LOVE AND MARRIAGE. III. TRAVELL. IV. GOVERNMENT. V. RELIGION. CONCLUSION. Oxford: Hen. Hall for Thomas Robinson, 1656. [14] pp. + 151 pp. 8vo., Rebound in brown cloth with gilt red leather spine label. Advice intended for Osborne's son John, who became, among other achievements, prime serjeant-at-law in Ireland from 1680-1686. The book was popular and well-known in its day, and also quite controversial, as Osborne (1593-1659) argued in it against marriage and women, large libraries, and the monarchy. The book was suppressed in 1658 by the Vice-Chancellor, and was brought before the House of Lords after the Restoration as treasonous. Wing O508; Madan III, 2278. Quite scarce in the first edition.

Così Isaac D’Israeli (1766-1848), padre di Benjamin Disraeli e anche studioso di paremiologia, riassumeva il contenuto dell'opera nel suo studio The Philosophy of Proverbs, compreso nel volume Curiosities of Literature: Fleury de Bellingen’s Explication de Proverbes François, on comparing it with Les Illustres Proverbes Historiques, a subsequent publication, I discovered to be the same work. It is the first attempt to render the study of proverbs somewhat amusing. The plan consists of a dialogue between a philosopher and a Sancho Pança, who blurts out his proverbs with more delight than understanding. The philosopher takes that opportunity of explaining them by the events in which they originated, which, however, are not always to be depended on. Duplessis, Bibliographie parémiologique, pp. 174 e sgg. Brunet, I, 757: Édition recherchée. Graesse, I, 329. Nodier, Mélanges tirés d'une petite bibliothèque, p. 128.
